1 out of 5 stars horribly written, poorly organized.......2007-07-11

The author knows a great deal about his subject but seemingly very little about organizing and presenting information. With so much knowledge of his field, he encumbers so many simple ideas with semi-related details, jargon and undefined acronyms. Though he claims his book is for assorted beginners (either to RC models in general or electric planes in particular), he does a terrible job at explaining (or even introducing) fundamental concepts. For example, the chapter on plane selection is a discourse about motor power with only the occasional obtuse reference to different sets of flight controls, and doesn't really cover types (glider vs. sailplane vs. 3D vs. flying wing), pro & con of fuselage materials (balsa vs. foam vs. fiberglass). Forgive me if these aren't perfect examples but I'm a beginner! What I know about the sport is from a few coherently-written, professionally-edited magazine articles. If you are new to the sport, then this compendium of stream-of-consciousness random facts is likely not for you. If you are a more advanced model-builder, it is hard to imagine this being the best resource available.

4 out of 5 stars Great intro to electric R/C models.......2004-04-08

This is the best book on electric powered aircraft I have found. There's a good explanation of electric motor characteristics, requirements, etc., always put into a context that peopler new to electrics can relate to. The explanations of theory are just what you need to know, with no useless charts like some other books. He also steers clear of wasting space on specific manufacturer's motors, sticking to useful generalities and a few examples.

There are also useful sections on ducted fans and appropriate model selection. Instructions on soldering and building your own battery packs are clear and precise with good photos.

The only drawback is that Li-Po batteries were just on the horizon when this book was written, so his comments on them are somewhat speculative.

      Book Description

The availability of lithium polymer (Li-Poly) batteries has transformed the world of model aircraft. It is now possible for manufacturers to offer electric-powered models that perform similarly to gas-powered models. How to Build and Fly Electric Model Aircraft is a fully-illustrated, all-color guide to unleashing the unlimited potential of silent flight with electric power. Highly regarded hobby author Robert Schleicher examines the new technologies that allow enthusiasts access to indoor and outdoor spaces not accessible to gas power models. He also offers primers on topics such as choosing a battery, tethered flight versus free flight, simple sail planes, beginning and advanced radio control, indoor flight, build-it-yourself kits, and even state-of-the-art U-control and exact-scale flying. This title also includes club and organization lists, helpful resources, and a glossary.

Very slick but empty read. Contained very little info on building or flying model airplanes. Nice pics but not much else.

      3 out of 5 stars Very Basic--Not Much Detail.......2005-11-02

If you're looking for anything but the most basic information about electric flight, this isn't your book. I had hoped that, since it has an October, 2005 copyright, it would offer in-depth information regarding outrunner motors, Li-Poly options, brushless ESCs, etc. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

The section on batteries is woefully deficient, especially when he doesn't go into any depth on "C" charging protocols, peak sensing chargers and conditioners, etc. He covers these so lightly that, if I hadn't done reading elsewhere, I'd have been lost. Lots of excellent photos and other eye candy but not much real substance for someone wanting to make decisions.

There's much better information (free) at masportaviator.com and electric-only sites like ezonemag.com

                      Book Description

This vivid account of the life and times of Paul Revere was first published in 1942 to great acclaim and a Pulitzer Prize. An elegant storyteller and expert historian, Edith Forbes paints a memorable portrait of American colonial history and of this most legendary of revolutionary heroes -- "not merely one man riding one horse on a certain lonely night of long ago, but a symbol to which his countrymen can yet turn."

5 out of 5 stars Amazing man - amazing book!.......2007-04-17

If you would like to go back in time and really experience what it was like to know Paul Revere, John Hancock, Samuel Adams & Joseph Warren - then this book is for you. It is an enjoyable read that really takes you back to Boston in the late 1700's.

You will come to understand what an important role Paul Revere played in our early history. It is fascinating to see that a man who was involved in the Boston tea party turned around and left without sleep to carry news to Philadelphia of what had taken place. He made the trip to Philadelphia and back four times that year, averaging 63 miles a day!

By reading this book, you will be there to see the painted faces of men returning from the Boston tea party, or feel the frustration of having the king's soldiers living in your neighbor's homes. You will experience anxiety as Robert Newman makes his narrow escape out of Christ's Church window after the lanterns have given warning.

You will also come to appreciate Paul Revere - who was kind-hearted, quick to make peace with old enemies, and willing to do what was needed. You will find that at age 65 he took on the task of learning how to roll copper for the ships for our new American Navy.

After reading this book you will find you have been both entertained and educated!

5 out of 5 stars Paul Revere then and now.......2007-01-28

It is a rare author who can write a book that , 50 years later, shows few signs of age. It is also rare for the writer of historical fiction to have the ability to entice kids of another generation to enter the world of which she writes. Esther Forbes is one of those gifted writers. Fifteen years ago, my 13 year old son pulled this book from my shelves and found himself thoroughly immersed in the world of 18th century Boston. Although more has undoubtedly been discovered about the life and times of Paul Revere since this particular bio was initially published, this account remains vital and valuable today. I don't keep all of the books that I buy and read, but this has been in my bookcase for more than 20 years.

4 out of 5 stars Masterly told story of Paul Revere and Boston.......2004-07-12

For this book Forbes got the Pulitzer Prize and it is hard to believe it is almost 50 years old now.

It is a biography of Paul Revere but also more than that. It is also the history of Boston and the Revolution. Because of his important standing in Boston of his day, he was a coppersmith, a Son of Liberty and a prominent Mason, we get to know a lot more about 'the world he lived in'.

It seems very fair and balanced. Not a great soldier or tactician but someone who was instrumental behind the scenes as a provider of weaponry and of course as a messenger.

For those interested in daily life AND the Revolutionary War this book is great. It also shows you what Paul REvere did and why you find his name so often when walking around Boston.

5 out of 5 stars We could use a few Paul Reveres today.......2004-05-29

Esther Forbes shows that Paul Revere was not just a guy who rode a horse and shouted, "The British are coming!" Actually, his famous ride to Lexington was a very small part of his life and contribution to our nation's development. Forbes provides thorough details about Revere's many activities and interests. In addition to his work as one of the Sons of Liberty, he was an engraver, silversmith, bell maker, military officer, and manufacturer of gunpowder and rolled copper. And if that weren't enough, he dabbled in dentistry. Such an entrepreneur! It's inspiring to see what can be accomplished by a person who is honest, hard-working, humble, and genuinely concerned about other people.

Forbes also includes a lot of information about other prominent people from Boston, such as John Hancock, Joseph Warren, Dr. Benjamin Church, and Samuel Adams. These men played important roles, but I think the focus is on Revere because of the aura surrounding Paul Revere and his legendary midnight ride. We are drawn to stories of heroism in the face of mortal danger. John Hancock's huge signature ... well, it just doesn't stir us the same way.

Most of the action happens between 1756 and 1779. It was a time of tension and uncertainty. Forbes shows that the people struggling against the British really didn't know how it would turn out. There were no guarantees of success. Also, the wrangling between Whigs and Tories seemed like a foreshadowing of the friend-against-friend clashes that happened in our Civil War 80 years later.

The pre-1756 and post-1779 events didn't benefit from the inherent excitement of current events, so these parts of the book didn't hold my attention as well. Still, this IS a biography, and it isn't Forbes' fault that Revere lived 40 years past the end of the Revolutionary War.

I enjoyed this non-sensationalized look at social, political, and military facets of colonial America. And now that I know what Paul Revere did beyond riding horses and shouting, I'm glad he's got a spot in our history books.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Revere and the World He Lived in.......2002-05-26

Paul Revere and the World He Lived in by Esther Forbes is a well written authoritative biography about Paul Revere. The book has a flowing but romantic aire to it... painting a portrait with words and describing the life and times of early New England and Boston in particular.

Paul Revere was a multifarious man displaying many talents as the book points out. Well written, flowing narrative, being easily readable and well documented are just a few of the wonderful traits that the author brings to the reader. It's enjoyable to read and you feel like your right there seeing everything transpire right before your eyes. That's a talent raely found in writing and no wonder this book won a Pulitzer Prize in history.

This book is well worth reading and gives the reader a good foundation as to what life was like for people from 1735 - 1818. As well, this should be one of the books used in our schools for teaching American History. The author really brings out a love for her subject in this book.

                                        Book Description

Mae McNally Kirwin was born in 1894 in Chokio, a small prairie community in western Minnesota. In 1926, the sudden death of her husband left Mae to support herself and her five children. These facts were well known, but for Logue, they were not enough. Determined to get to know her grandmother better, Logue sets out to assemble the bits and pieces of her grandmother's life. Along the way, Logue takes the reader-and herself-on a journey of discovery. Digging through forgotten bank records, old newspapers, handwritten census forms, family documents, and faded recipes, she pieces together the past. In the process, she tells a much larger story-that of a community, a way of life, a family, and a single woman's struggle to survive in a world that is both harsh and richly rewarding.

                                        5 out of 5 stars a powerful, personal journey.......2000-07-12

Mary Logue takes us by the hand and shows us, thread by thread, as she unravels the story of her grandmother's fascinating life on the Minnesota prairie. A memorable and highly readable memoir/biography. Anybody who has ever wondered about where they came from will appreciate this story of a granddaughter's search for her roots.

                                        5 out of 5 stars A Touching Memoir.......2000-07-05

Mary Logue gives her readers a tender and intimate peek into her family in this tribute to her Irish grandmother Mae Kirwin. She also shows us the importance of recording family stories and how to be persistent in digging up details. The loved ones of our past and present deserve more than just being listed with birth and death dates. The stories and little anecdotes about those people are what bring them to life again. They also give us a look into what life was like long ago, in this case, the life of a small town in Minnesota. I was especially touched by the way Ms. Logue wrote about the untimely death of her grandfather and how that event had a profound influence on the way her grandmother raised her children and lived the rest of her life. I also enjoyed how the author, a mystery writer (Blood Country, Still Explosion) compared family research to solving a mystery. Anyone who has done genealogy studies knows that you have to have clues to follow. Trails of "evidence" help uncover the hidden stories in your family's history. At the end of the book Ms. Logue provides helpful tips for others seeking to write a family history.

2 out of 5 stars Halfway there, and still no point.......1998-04-27

At first glance, Halfway Home sounded like it would deliver emotional satisfaction--a woman discovering who her grandmother WAS as a woman, not as the crotchity old grandmother she remembered her to be. And yes, I'm sure the life of Mae Kirwin was interesting, but not worth a whole book, at least not the way it was presented. The presentation of information was choppy and never carried my attention. The author made too many assumptions. My English professors would have needed another red pen because of all the holes and blanket assumptions she made throughout the book. The research Logue performed definitely deserves to be commended, she worked hard to discover her grandmother. However, she never really delivered what I thought she would, I finished the book saying, "So what?" Finding your roots gives you a direction I think, I love hearing stories about my ancestors and appreciate knowing who they were in relation to me, I hope Logue is able to say the same. What this book could have been versus what it was left me unsatisfied. I wouldn't recommend it.
