    Book Description

“This book unfolds rather like a good novel; it is compelling and convincing. The authors approach their topic with a great deal of background and superb organizational abilities. As the premise unwinds, readers are provided with excellent explanation and justification, as well as real-life accounts of people and their experiences. As a side benefit, the book also yields an admirable example of well-done qualitative case studies that are triangulated effectively with survey methods.” --Sara U. Douglas, University of Illinois Social Responsibility in the Global Market illuminates an alternative way of conducting business that bridges the consumer’s social concerns and the producer’s financial concern through a compatible, nonexploitive, and humanizing system of fair trade. In-depth case studies introduce past successes and failures for seven Alternative Trading Organizations (ATOs) as they foster artisan empowerment, cultural integrity, and business sustainability. An integrative model synthesizes business conditions, tasks, and skills imperative for effective functioning of a fair trade system in an increasingly competitive global market. Mary Ann Littrell and Marsha Ann Dickson’s treatment of ATOs provides useful insights for academics in marketing, international development, entrepreneurship, and anthropology. In addition, this book offers practical finance for practitioners in international development, socially responsible businesses, and consumers concerned about impacts of their marketplace decisions.

2 out of 5 stars A little bit more than who's who, but definitely not how they achieved greatness.......2005-11-07

Simple arithmetic and you know it's stupid to expect much from a 227 content book that attempts to tell the success stories and forumlas of 55 business leaders. Definitely everyone of them deserves its own biography instead of an average 4.13 pages. So I had lowered my standard before I read it. Still I had been quite disappointed. All passages were columns published previously on IBD written by different reporters that not only the writing style but the focus on individual leaders fluctuated much between hard data/history and success formula, primarly on the former. I am sorry that I could gain little knowledge/insight (that I really wanted to learn "how" they succeeded) during the reading. I felt even worse after reading from the previous reviewer that the content had been available on the net. In short, please give this book a pass!

3 out of 5 stars Good stories but you can get the information for free........2004-03-07

I love the Leaders & Success page in Investor's Business Daily however I feel that creating a book with just leaders & success articles from past issues (all of these I am sure you can find via investors.com's archive search, which is free) is a terrible way to go about it. I bought this book when it first came out under the impression that it was never before seen Leaders and Success type articles.... I was wrong, and very disappointed.

The one thing that I like about this book is they have their best leaders & success articles compiled in a book format for easy pleasure reading, and at $8.78 at it is a time saving bargain.

    Book Description

In this no-nonsense book, experts reveal their proven techniques for uncovering undervalued growth stocks. The three critical variables of growth stock investing are fully explained, along with actual recommendations for growth stocks that are still a bargain for today's growth investor. The authors will highlight the impressive performance of growth stocks over the last quarter century--with comparison to other types of stocks--and show how growth stocks have racked up returns similar to the best value stocks.

3 out of 5 stars A Fair Weather Investment Approach.......2002-11-27

This book is specifically written for those individuals willing to invest the time and resources to develop their own portfolio of stocks. As such, it is not for people looking to better evaluate mutual fund performance, though some information on how to do so is presented. Nor is it a book for gamblers or others looking to dabble in the market for quick profits. The book assumes from the very beginning that the reader desires to make his or her own investment choices as to which stocks to own for the long haul (that is five or more years).

The main goal of this book is to show the reader one way of making stock picks that will be held for the long haul. The approach outlined in the text is essentially top-down and two pronged. The first element of the approach is to find industries with strong growth prospects and then choose companies within each industry that have above average prospects for growth. As for the second element, the book takes a forward-looking or future-oriented approach to growth stock selection, and relies almost exclusively on analyst consensus of earnings growth as the basis for stocks to own. In effect, the authors believe all other decision-making criteria are secondary to projected future earnings growth. Herein lies the biggest fault of the text, as by now everyone knows that projected earnings growth is a subjective criterion, and more importantly, analyst consensus is more often than not a lot of hot air.

However, the book does have a number of good things going for it. The first and most important merit of the book is its bold admission that one must critically research the company before buying its stock, and that there is no getting around this if one wants to make money in stocks, no matter what investment method one chooses to use. The book`s second merit is its insistence that the only way to make good money is to do so over time, to avoid quick gains and numerous trading costs, and compound one`s total return over time.

Yet, I offer to the potential reader one important caveat. Based on the historical data presented in chapters two and three of the book, when comparing growth and value styles to the S&P 500 index, there appears to be only slight differences in performance, with value orientation outperforming the S&P 500 index, and the index outperforming the growth orientation. Moreover, in the same time period, although a few large growth funds managed to significantly outperform the S&P 500 in the short run, on an after tax and fund expense adjustment basis, not a single fund could match the S&P over extended periods of time (that is more than ten years). As a result, based on the data the authors provided (which by the way, they wanted to use originally to show that the individual could construct a portfolio that could easily outperform the fund pros), the surprising and obviously unintentional conclusion is that one would have been better off owning the S&P 500 index than owning a growth and/or value fund (read the book and see for yourself). This conclusion is especially startling when one factors in taxes and managed fund expenses. Incidentally, this is a position further supported by Mr. John Bogle in his thought-provoking book, Common Sense on Mutual Funds.

That said, the book introduces to the reader a fair-weather method for evaluating stocks. I use the perjorative `fair-weather` because this method only works best in rising economies, and falters in sinking ones. However, the book also gives the reader, in general terms, a clearly defined buy and sell discipline. Overall, I think the book deserves to be read by the novice and intermediate investor who may not be entirely clear (as I was) on what the terms growth and value really mean in the investment universe.

    1 out of 5 stars Lousy.......2001-07-14

This is a terrible book by a fund manager who managed to lose over 30% in kempers so called growth fund over a 3 year period. while most other funds at least kept pace with inflation. Look at symbol KGRAX for more info. Follow her lead and you too can lose your money.

3 out of 5 stars A short and to the point book.......1999-05-11

The authors explain the difference between growth stocks and value stocks and gives you a list of 13 questions you should ask yourself about the stock before investing in it. The book is short... too short, but it is direct and to the point.

5 out of 5 stars Complete and Compact. A Smart Read........2002-01-09

I feel that the author explains value investing in a practical and non threatening way to the beginning and intermediate investor. In these times of Investing for Dummies manuals How to Be A Value Investor not only tells the reader how, but why.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-05-27

The book is OK on general principles-Don't time the market; Study companies; Diversify; Develop your own investment plan, Etc. But I bought the book for specifics of value investing-how to read and evaluate annual reports and financial statements. I was expecting chapters 3 and 4 to be the most helpful of the book. Unfortunately I did not find that to be the case-information on how to evaluate annual reports and financial statements could have been more detailed and complete and there are confusions/errors about some of the key evaluative tools.

Current Ratio: Pages 43 and 53 says a Current Ratio of 2 OR LESS is good. Page 51 says 2 OR MORE! Actually I think it is 2 or more-because there should be no more than $1 of current liabilities for every $2 of current assets.

Quick Ratio: Pages 43 and 54 say a Quick Ratio of 1 OR LESS is good. Page 51 says 1 OR MORE (Appendix A says 1 to 10). Actually I think it is 1 or more-because a company should be able to cover all its current liabilities with current assets less inventory.

Financial formulas can be complicated and there may be no one clear-cut answer for all situations. If so, a discussion should have been included to help readers apply these tools.

Gross Margin: Page 63 shows Walgreen to have a Gross Margin of 94%. It is not clear how a gross profit of 12,655,000 was arrived at-the closest thing I see is a total of costs and deductions on page 59 which is listed on the 10K as "net revenues". While this is most likely a minor glitch, it should have been caught by the author or editor.

Two other criticisms. First, the use of the charts by Bigcharts.com. What do they mean and how should I use them? If charts are included in a text, they should be clearly labeled and there should be an explanation of how to use them.

Second, choice of material on which to base the book. The author based some of the book on interviews (most by telephone) with 5 value investors. Why/how were these interviewees chosen? I think journalists who include interviews should explain the justification for their choice of interviewees. This really should also apply to the books chosen as references-and articles quoted.

2 out of 5 stars Good but could be better.......2001-05-03

Part of a series of books for first time investors, "Value Investor" contained some useful techniques for analysing financial statement but did not really get to the heart of the difference between value investing and growth investing. Also, that the book lacked authority and was not convincing because it failed to address how the stock market actually works or risks associated with establishing a value-based investment portfolio.

One offputting feature was embedded advertising of value funds and their managers with no analysis of how they performed vis a vis other actively managed funds or index funds.

Recommended as a rough guide to value investing but not as the basis for an investment strategy.

    4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-03-21

Lisa Holton describes the way value investors find bargain stocks. She looks at a variety of financial formulas that can help you unearth good deals. This is a useful primer for investors, since it offers clear explanations of financial ratios. The book includes plenty of specific examples of ways to apply formulas to a company's financial statements. She clearly describes the contents of SEC documents and offers helpful advice about when to sell a stock. We at getAbstract recommend this book for beginner to intermediate investors, for those unfamiliar with "value investing," and for those interested in basic portfolio planning. This book focuses on the United States stock market and may be less useful in other countries.

5 out of 5 stars The Building Blocks of Value Investing.......2000-07-21

This is an excellent and informative guide to a underused but highly profitable strategy. Although the book's self description calls this strategy "contrarian" there is a clear difference between that and value investing. The strategy outlined in this book is certainly value.

This aside, I found this book extremely helpful. The tools needed to build a winning portfolio are covered comprehensively and the author also gives readers a formula for calculating what expected growth should be. Highly recommended for anyone seeking an exciting and low risk investment strategy.

My pen name is Big Al. I am also the writer of this book. When you self - publish a book if you don't review and promote it, then no one will. Which is what I am doing now. I have read dozens of investment books and they all ignore the almost unknown world of small-cap and micro-cap investing. Not to mention my specialty of penny mining stock investing. And yet this is precisely the world where the small investor of limited means can make a killing. Once you make your first killing in my world you will be in it for life. Just like I am. Let me introduce you to my world. A world where you can make a killing on a chump-change investment.
The most exciting thing about my world is that anyone can afford to enter it. You can become a player for an investment as low as $500.

EXCELLENT BOOK. It delivers what it promised.

EXCELLENT BOOK. If you ever wanted to know EVERYTHING about investing, financial planning, taxes, and making money this is required reading.

I haven't counted every word, but even the glossary must have defined at lease a thousand financial terms. It is filled with hundreds of pages of sound financial advice. Obviously, this book has been THOUOGHLY researched.

My friends are buying copies for their adult children. I asked them why, and they said that this book is filled with the things EVERY young person need to know and they, as the parent, may have failed to communicate. Perhaps, because they, the parents took for granted that their children would absorb the information just by being their children.

And, these are my CPA's, those with MBA's, leader of major corporations, and my stockbrokers. I do not understand why, but my wealthier and better-educated friends understand the value of this book more than the less educated and less wealthy. That is very unfortunate. But isn't that usually the case? Often, those that need the information the most appreciate it the less.

ANYONE that sincerely wants to buy a thoroughly researched financial reference book filled with hundreds of pages of detailed factual financial information will not be disappointed. Buy it today.

1 out of 5 stars It's not BAD, but ..........2007-08-19

The Millionaire Mailman does contain a plethora of financial information. "My Inside Story On How I Became Rich..." however, is nonexistent.Did he write his own review? There are hundreds of pages of facts, but no tales of delivering mail in the sweltering heat of Texas while being offered lemonade by "the richest families in Texas" in their air conditioned homes(or anything like that). I was expecting a story, but I got a book full of facts you can literally find anywhere. I suppose it's nice to have all that copious information in one place if you need it, but there is nothing amusing or intersting or even any advice. "Inside Story" was very misleading to me.

It is breathtaking in scope. Clearly, it has been rigorously researched and documented. The hundreds of pages of timely business and personal finance advice are relevant in everyway. It explains in minute details how to prosper in any situation. Buy it today.

The message I have for salespeople is based on the knowledge and experience I have acquired from over 34 years of real world selling, sales management, sales training and management of customer service/support centers. The knowledge and insights I want to pass along with my book have not been learned in sales training classes and seminars I have attended or books I have read. The finer selling and human relation techniques I have developed and presented in my book have been learned in the real world of selling. This book is intended to make salespeople aware of the advanced techniques of how to become a successful professional salesperson. These techniques will enable salespeople to attain a higher level of professionalism, confidence, enthusiasm and success when selling. They will be able to separate themselves as true professionals from the crowded field of other capable sales people in their lines of business. My objective is to pass along the knowledge and insights that I have acquired throughout my years of real world selling. This book identifies common selling mistakes and how to avoid them. This book will also reveal to you the many proven, successful selling techniques that I have learned and developed over the years. By learning, understanding and applying these finer techniques of selling, you will be able to further develop your existing selling talents, abilities and skills into your own personalized " art form" of selling! Another purpose of this book is to present guidelines on how to develop, practice and implement techniques for successful, professional selling based on common sense and ethics. Using a common sense approach towards selling will build upon the fact that becoming a successful salesperson involves maintaining a positive frame of mind. It has to do with how you think. It has to do with how you approach selling in your mind and place trust in your intuition. A successful salesperson's two most valuable assets are their mind and their time. Ethics is presented as a key approach. Ethics is such an important topic that I felt the need to instruct salespeople on how to professionally develop and earn their customer's confidence and trust based on ethical business practices. This book will present information and examples on how to develop professional selling skills based on ethical standards. These standards will relate directly to your moral character. The strength of you character will be based on your ability to develop and adhere to high moral standards and principles that will help to set you apart from other salespeople. This book is divided into two sections. The first section examines " Selling Essentials." In the second section, I focus on the " Secrets Of Selling" where I reveal my "110 Fundamental Secrets Of Professional Salespeople." The information, suggestions, techniques, strategies and insights in this book are candid, straightforward, realistic and in focus. They are presented in a condensed form so that they can be easily remembered, referred to and applied on a daily basis. The chapters are designed to be easily read, digested and implemented by the reader. The brevity of some chapters is intended to appeal to people seeking real world, practical, no-nonsense answers to making themselves better salespeople and, therefore, making their sales team more effective.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book with immediately useful information........2005-12-21

Mr. Danna's writing is very clear and to the point. The information and techniques are immediately useful in any area of selling. As a former high school biology teacher, I used his strategies to help "sell" the students on learning. In my organizational/educational consulting business, I find the skills that I learned from Mr. Danna's book to be extremely useful and successful. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to successfully sell anything.

          Book Description

Many business ethics books take a basically collectivist approach to the subject. They speak in terms of collective rights and interests, the public interest, social justice, the greatest good for the greatest number, and so forth. If individualism is mentioned at all, it is mentioned disparagingly. This book takes a different approach. While some of the contributors to this volume take the more popular, collectivist approach, many of them do not. Thus, this book offers a more balanced presentation of business ethics than that found in most books on the subject. The book is divided into four parts. The contributors to Part I offer an enlightening look at the philosophical foundations of business ethics via discussions on the teaching of business ethics, on the relationship between capitalism and morality, on the philosophical concepts of selfishness, exploitation, and the profit motive, as well as a unique chapter where business ethics issues are looked at against the foil of the philosophy of Ayn Rand. Part II addresses business ethics issues that involve the relationship of the corporation to outsiders. Among the topics discussed are the concept of corporate duty and social responsibility, environmental issues, and business ethics applied to so-called "anti-competitive" practices. Part III discusses some issues regarding the responsibility of the corporation to insiders, and Part IV covers some of the ethical responsibilities of employees and the corporation. A major contribution to the field of business ethics, this edited work is recommended for scholars, practitioners, and the general public.

            Book Description

The success of any endeavor depends upon effective communication, which in turn depends upon two important elements: simplicity and relevance. This is true whether you are presenting a business plan for financial support or tailoring a speech to a specific platform, designing a visual program for a presentation or having a simple conversation. Every day we are overwhelmed with thousands of pieces of communication, some simple and relevant but most confusing and inconsistent. New formats and delivery methods are developed continuously, while the difficulty of receiving, processing and responding is evolving in a similar fashion!

"I Didn't Ask You To Dance!" is a collection of practical, real-life experiences: a resource helping people respond to similar situations in similar ways. Because everyone has encountered most of the experiences in here at one point or another, this book is for everyone: from Corporate Executives to Church Leaders, Counselors to Humorists. This book is about the nature of people, the nature of work, and the nature of life!

How companies are staying in the black-by going green
Adopting "green policies" is now essential to maintaining a company's healthy public image, and their bottom line. No longer a "fringe" issue, adhering to policies that protect the environment is also a matter of law. Companies that seriously violate environmental regulations are prosecuted, their reputations and share value damaged. Written by a former environmental lawyer and an environmental consultant, this informative book explains the benefits obtained through a sound environmental policy and how to finance environmental strategies that will favorably impact the bottom line. Complete with case studies of major companies (such as Shell and BP) as well as international examples, this book presents expert, up-to-date advice on how an environmental policy can be successfully managed
to benefit both the company and investor alike.
