Book Description
Global financial markets are part of a much larger world, a world of fluid government policies, political unrest, and other unpredictable forces.
If It's Raining in Brazil, Buy Starbucks quantifies how far-reaching factors affect stock prices, and how investors can trade more effectively by understanding the links between these forces and the stock market. It focuses on specific macroeconomic forces and which sectors of the economy react to different indicators, providing investors and traders with clear signals on whether to buy, sell, or sit on the sidelines.
Unlike more targeted investing titles, Peter Navarro's insightful book contains benefits for all investorsfrom day traders to long-term, buy-and-hold investors. Simulations and analyses, along with real-life examples and case studies, provide inside details on:
- How to profit from specific technological change
- Strategies to trade effectively in times of recession or inflation
- Which economic indicators to followand why
Customer Reviews:
Not just for investors.......2007-02-10
The other reviews do a good job of summarizing the strengths and weaknesses of this book so I won't rehash them here. However I will say that this book is useful for more than just investors. For example, have you ever wondered what the implications were of:
- interest rate changes?
- currency, foreign exchange values?
- economic reports on: labour productivity, job creation, housing starts, trade balances, etc.?
- significant market news such as: droughts, flooding, unseasonally warm weather, wars, etc.?
Anyone that receives/reviews economics reports will benefit from reading this book as a quick primer or refresher on interpreting market or economic data and quickly arriving at it's implications.
Good info, arguable presentation .......2006-01-26
Reading first few chapter was a little disappointing. The authro keeps using examples like Janet is a good girl, she studied macroeconomics and she made a killing trade and bought a boat; Joe doesn't learn economics, he made a trade and lost a lot of money - these are not literal quotes, but you've got the idea. This oversimplified approach is a sort of annoying.
But by the end of the book, I have to admit, it has plenty of useful information. Basically if you want to make an investment, in order to understand the internal state of the company, you should read the balance, income and cash flow statements. But it's also important to see the big picture and understand the macro environment that company operates in. There are plenty of reports available and this book teaches you how to find and read that information. The book roughly covers college level (but it's written in plain english with almost no formulas or graphs), so unless you're a proffesional economist or investor, it will probably open your eyes on some aspects of how the US economy works, how it is being monitored and regulated.
Sometimes that book gives an impression, that ability to read reports can be easily converted into profitable trades, but if you get that impression, it's probably wrong. It's hard to be a successul investor if you can't see the big picture of what is going on. But the ability to read reports will not nessesary make you a good investor. So don't expect to discover an easy way to get rich.
Overall, the author was trying to explain some really important and valuable mocroeconomics topics in a simple way. And the book does contain a lot of it. But the style could be a little more serious to my taste.
Some good information, bad structure.......2005-07-31
This book has some good information on money supply, various views on economic stimulation, margins affected by commodity prices and more. The problem with the book though is a big one: the author is literally all over the place. His thoughts are not structured enough to make an argument in a compelling rational way. He consistently says things that sound like "you too can make money, here's how!". Then he contradicts himself by claiming that others discount the event-risk based news that he spends so much time talking about in the book.
This book is unorganized, but has some interesting information, although you really need to get through his tiring writing style and structure in order to get to it.
Great investment book from a macro perspective.......2005-04-21
I've read an extensive number of investment books on everything from day trading to futures to options to system trading, etc. This book takes a macroeconomic view of the market and is one I hadn't put too much emphasis on in my trading style. The more I read the book, the more I liked it and found its ideas logical and practical. It is not a "Holy Grail" book but is one that has expanded my knowledge envelope by also considering a macro view and has helped me trade more intelligently. The book describes how external events effect the market and how to take advantage of them. Events such as earnings reports, fed reports, climate events, etc. that definitely do effect on the market. The author tells how to trade in specific ETF's or stocks to take advantage of these events as well as other signifigant things like sector rotation. All in all, a great book.
Quite a good and interesting book for beginners.......2003-06-09
I have always been skeptical of trading or investment books with very "marketing" titles. Quite to my surprise, this book really delivers what it's title promises, that it can really be taken as a "guide" to profit from news and other market-moving events.
In fact, this is a book of fundamental/macro-economics analysis. Distinguishing itself from others, it is full of lively and vivid examples that readers can easily put the propositions into practice, with little modification, though the result is not guaranteed in this increasingly competitive market. Nevertheless, the if X, buy 1 and if Y, sell 2 approach can really speed up the learning curve of nearly all beginners.
One drawback: Although the author did mention the many "traps" in the market, the tone of these warnings was too light compared to the rosy pictures painted by the author himself on the effectiveness of his approach. As I mentioned before, there are more and more traps nowadays with the increasing employment of derivatives by professional traders. I think that the author should elaborate more on this respect.
Anyway, worth the price and the time.

Book Description
This volume bridges the gap between management strategy, management accounting, and strategic human resource management to analyze the link between organizational strategy and systems of planning and control. Taking a managerial approach, particularly suited to MBA students, it helps students to identify problems and construct solutions based on proffered theory and industry practice. The problem-based approach adopted by the book engages students and challenges them to consider the range of factors required for the development of a performance management system and asks them to evaluate the use of different systems in different organizations. There is an on-going case which is developed across a range of chapters, helping students to develop a complete performance management system across the company.
Book Description
Morse is not just a baby cost book. Taking a much more strategic approach, the focus is on the full range of cost drivers within the value chain rather than on just the distinctions between product/non-product costs and unit-variable/fixed costs.

Book Description
"If each individual in your organization became Shareholder Value-focused and made all of their decisions accordingly, you would have an almost incomprehensible competitive advantage." -Lawrence B. M. Serven.
For some time now, the conviction has been growing that traditional business planning methods are flawed and inefficient. At many companies, attempts have been made to address the problem with new budgeting systems, complete benchmarking studies, and reorganizations of finance functions. Unfortunately, while such initiatives may help reduce planning time, fundamentally they do little or nothing to make the planning process more effective. In this groundbreaking book, Lawrence Serven exposes the real reasons why planning so often fails to get results, and shows you how to transform the planning process from an "exercise in minimization" into a potent, results-driven management system that consistently creates shareholder value.
While most books on the subject discuss value creation in terms of grand strategic moves made by upper management, Value Planning takes a bottom-up approach. Lawrence Serven demonstrates how it is the cumulative effect of all of the little decisions made by individuals throughout an organization, every day, that makes or breaks shareholder value. More importantly, he shows you how to capitalize on that fact, and use business planning as a strategic management tool for aligning all levels of an organization-from the executive suite to the mail room-behind the common goal of increasing shareholder value.
Short on theory and long on step-by-step practical guidance, Value Planning gives you a complete blueprint for implementing a comprehensive value planning management system in your enterprise. Each chapter isolates a key aspect of value-driven business planning and contrasts it with traditional business planning models. Within each chapter you will also find valuable, easy-to-perform self-diagnostics that help you to assess your company's current status in the area under discussion, and a set of "Improve-ment Steps" that can easily be tailored to fit the realities of your organization.
Value Planning is an indispensable working resource for controllers, CFOs, finance directors, and budget directors, as well as for all upper-level managers involved in the planning process.
His work has been profiled in CFO magazine and Controller's Magazine, and he is the author of several articles that have appeared in Chief Information Officer and Technical Analysis of Stocks and Commodities. An award-winning public speaker, he has been the featured speaker at the AICPA and chaired a World Research Group international conference on reengineering the planning process.
Praise for Value Planning
"Serven demystifies shareholder value creation and provides a pragmatic, actionable guidebook for executives. Value Planning's step-by-step management system focuses business planning on delivering, not just predicting results. The book's self-diagnostic measures should prove especially useful in charting and assessing organizational progress." -Henry A. McKinnell President, Pfizer Inc.
"Value Planning addresses today's number one management issue - building a value management system-and provides a systematic approach with clear guidance that will be helpful to any company in creating shareholder value. I really enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it."- John B. Menzer Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
"Mr. Serven's approach is insightful and uncomplicated. Rather than simply focusing on theory, he has offered compelling real-life examples of how well-known leaders and their companies have built value for their shareholders." -Keith Rauschenbach Second Vice President, TIAA-CREF.
Customer Reviews:
Good step by step guidelines.......2000-07-04
I am in the process of implementing some of what this suggested, and the step by step approach makes it a lot easier.
Finally, something PRACTICAL on shareholder value.......1998-12-24
Every book I have read about shareholder value has been long on theory and short on application, but Value Planning is different. It provides a hands on blueprint for creating a value management system to grow shareholder value. It's about time!
A blueprint for creating a value management system!.......1998-12-01
A lot has been written about shareholder value, but there has been little written about how to put theory into practice, which is what this book does. I highly recommend it.
One of the best management books ever written.......1998-11-03
I am sure any number of businesses will benefit greatly from his book. Mr.Servens keen insight into the corporate world has proven invaluable. I especially recommend this book to budding entreprenuers, social climbers and misanthropes.
