Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good book, useful tools, beginner thru expert.......2007-07-26

I've been trading for over twenty years, including a period as a floor trader on the Chicago Board of Trade. Even with that experience there are tips and tricks in this book I found useful to the point where I employ them daily. To be complete as a reviewer I will say there is a lot of pretty basic stuff from my point of view, but still well worth reviewing since some of it I had forgotten.

Well written, easy reading, well organized

5 out of 5 stars This book can pay for itself very quickly..........2004-11-21

Online Investing Hacks by Bonnie Biafore (O'Reilly) is one of those books that can pay for itself in short order, as well as over and over.

Chapter list: Screening Investments; Hacking Excel for Financial Analysis; Collecting Financial Data; Analyzing Company Fundamentals; Technical Analysis; Executing Trades; Investing in Mutual Funds; Managing Your Portfolio; Financial Planning; Index

I worked at Enron from 1998 through 2001, and spent plenty of time during that dot.com era following my stock portfolio. I watched my Enron stock value go from incredible value to a point where it cost more to sell the stock than it was worth. I won a few bets (face it, that's what they were) on a few dot.coms and lost many more. What could have been an incredible nest egg, isn't. This book would have been a lifesaver if I had read and paid attention to it a few years ago. Biafore shows you how you can analyze and invest wisely using a variety of tools available to everyone.

If you're an Excel user, you'll find it an invaluable tool for analysis. She'll show you how you can use it to create financial charts (#13), calculate compound annual rates of growth (#26), and use rational values to buy and sell wisely (#36). #39 - Spot Hanky Panky with Cash Flow Analysis (using Enron as an example) would have literally saved me hundreds of thousands of dollars had I known about it. Even if you don't care about the investing tips, the hack on downloading data via Excel web queries (#7) was something I didn't know how to do (or that you could even do it!). The book has a little something for everyone.

As with all Hacks titles, you probably won't be interested in every single item. Some may not be applicable to your situation or may be too complex for what you care to handle. But all it would take is one hack to work out and change your investing for this book to pay huge dividends. If you do your own investing, you owe it to yourself to get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference/Resource.......2004-11-07

Online Investing Hacks is an excellent introduction to the world of investment. Though the title does contain the word 'Online', I would say that the general information the book provides on investing is not limited to the online realm.

Overall, I was very happy with the book, and found it incredibly useful. Though I do have several investments (401K, some stock, mutual funds etc) I would hardly consider myself an authority on the subject. This book provided very detailed explanations and tips on various forms of investment, from CD's to Index funds, and everything in between. While the experienced investor might not glean much from reading this book, anyone just getting started will find it an excellent reference, and resource.

The format of the book is similar to the other books in the 100 * Hacks series published by O'Reilly. There are exactly 100 hacks, or topics, which are spread across 9 chapters. Each one is an individual entity and can be read and understood without reliance on any of the other hacks.

One minor annoyance I had with the book is that it is geared toward those of you who, for some reason or another, run Microsoft's Windows OS, or have access to Microsoft Excel. Luckily, of the Excel examples that I played with, Open Office's Calc program handled them with minimal tweaking.

I can easily recommend this book to anyone who wants to invest, but is unsure of what to invest in, or needs some tips on making the most of preexisting investments. Those of you who enjoy research and building your own stats and graphs will also find parts of this book rather intriguing, as it covers data acquisition and manipulation with Excel in great detail. It will make an excellent addition to my reference shelf, and I have a feeling it will be well thumbed through in a very short time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for all investors.......2004-10-04

It seems like everyone is involved in investing in some form or another. While I always felt like I should be investing too, it was never clear to me how to begin this process. After all, it's my money. How can I be sure I'm investing in something that will provide some sort of reasonable return? This book is an excellent resource in answering some of those questions and putting the new investor on the right track.

This book is written in the same format as the other "hacks" series by O'Reilly. This format is very easy to read, and the format makes it very easy to find answers. Rather then having to read the book from cover to cover, the reader can pick out topics they are dealing with, read the answer, and move on. Since many of the people interesting in a book of this nature will likely have little time, the book's format works to its advantage.

The book begins with some basic introduction to the stock market and tips for selecting appropriate stocks or mutual funds. The whole middle section of the book deals with data analysis. The author discusses how to understand a company's balance sheet (e.g. what that P/E ratio means), how to spot companies in financial trouble, how to pick a good stock, and even how to trade. There is also a good discussion on minimizing the effect of taxes on your little return on investment.

The author even goes further and gets into a discussion on financial planning. In addition to discussing debt reduction, the author also talks about IRA plans and different strategies for saving for your child's education expenses. I think my favorite part of this book was the discussion on different education savings plans. The author discusses the ins and outs (as well as tax consequences) of each of the plans, and provides some examples illustrating the fact that it's better to start saving earlier than later.

This is an excellent book, not just for its investing advice, but also for its sound financial planning. This is a great book for anyone who is interested in increasing their wealth, saving for a rainy day, or simply saving for future financial goals.

5 out of 5 stars Among the most useful books on investing I've seen..........2004-09-19

This is one of the most useful books on investing that I've seen.

The excellent chapter on fundamental analysis alone is worth the price of admission. Plus there are chapters on technical analysis, mutual funds, asset allocation, financial planning, investing in bonds etc, all equally well written.

Hope the author writes a sequel to this book covering topics not covered here (eg. topics related to options trading).

A required title in any serious investor's bookshelf.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Don't be misguided by the Title.......2001-02-18

I thought this book is on investing on stocks in the internet. It is not. It is mostly a theoritical book talking about "internet stocks". It was not even clear to me what he meant by the internet stocks. I am sorry to rate it as single star. I am returning this book because it does not serve my purpose.

4 out of 5 stars A new type of stock requires new evaluation techniques.......2000-08-15

There is a new type of stock on the market, the Internet stock, which are unlike any other type of stock. You need new evaluation methods and analytical techniques to evaluate their potential and risk. In his book, the author gives you ideas on how to analyze Internet stocks.

5 out of 5 stars The Straight Dope.......2000-06-07

After a few spectacular boom-and-bust cycles it has become clear to most sensible observers that Internet stocks are real, and will be an essential part of the economy in the future, but also that many highly-touted stocks are terrible investments. The old accounting rules and valuation theories don't apply, but the new rules don't work any better. Companies founded and backed by people who were yesterday's success stories end up tomorrow's disasters. Other companies that break all the rules hit it big. Finally there is a book that offers every investor practical guidance on how to separate winners from losers. This isn't one of those play-it-safe books that tells you to look for companies so perfect you'll never find one; Professor Newton understands that you are buying Internet stocks to win big, and therefore have to take the chance of losing big. But this is also a book that takes risk seriously, and steers the reader away from the insubstantial stocks without sound business models. The book assumes nothing but some common sense, yet teaches an investment discipline that is every bit as professional as you will find anywhere on Wall Street or in Silicon Valley.

5 out of 5 stars thoroughly informative.......2000-06-05

David Newton shows clearly his mastery of the methods and techniques of investing in growing internet companies. Not only does he provide an informative background on choosing where to invest, he shows numerous references to these ideas. The research is clear and up to date. An overall good book. Congradulations, David!

          Book Description

With business cycles and office politics everpresent in the workplace, conversations often hinge on topics such as market share, "rightsizing," and "the bottom line." In today's business climate the focus is often not so much on the facts of the decision, but rather how and why the decision is being made. Ethical issues now permeate the language of business. This collection of essays explores current issues in business ethics through the eyes of leading authorities.

Analyzing the deeper questions which underlie business activities, the first part argues that the prime object for a legitimate business must be sustainability. Part two looks at the relationship between individuals and businesses, asking whether businesses can support their employees as an alternative to family and church. Lastly, the impact of recent trends in business is examined including the activities of global corporations, the changing gender balance, and privatization.

In Corporateering, Jamie Court illustrates how corporations routinely and quietly rob us of our personal freedoms, in-cluding privacy, security, the right to legal recourse, and more. In fact, "corporateering"-the act of prioritizing commercial gain over individual, social, or cultural gain-is everywhere in our lives. Court offers empowering strategies for counter-corporateering so we can reclaim our private lives, our right to health and safety, and other personal liberties.

It has always been the case that those with excess power are likely to overuse it, at the expense of those who have little power. In the corporate world, the hand of companies can get overbearing when there's a lot at stake. Unions have always experienced tough tactics. Legislatures are wooed with money, contributions, influence and political pressure. Whistle blowers often find themselves harassed, threatened, and intimidated. All of these excesses are documented with recent examples in this thoughtful book.

If you love your relationship with your HMO, the way your credit card company charges you, what your credit report has to say, and how your privacy is protected, then you have no need for this book. If, on the other hand, you are concerned about scandals like Enron, WorldCom, and have problems with corporate marketing to children at school, your HMO, credit card companies or credit reports, you need to read this book.

Mr. Court makes a persuasive case for corporations having gained too much power, and that the time has come to redress that balance in favor of individual citizens. He also provides lots of advice about what you can do to make matters better . . . both for yourself and others. The book's main flaw is that the section on how to fix matters is the briefest.

I hope that during the elections in 2004 that these issues will receive the attention they deserve.

After you finish this excellent book, find something to do to exercise your rights from the lists that begin in Part Three.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2003-07-27

I heard Mr. Court speak at a breakfast in San Francisco last week and purchased a copy of the book. Excellent expose of how corporations are curtailing our freedom and ending any idea of privacy. A lot of interesting things to think about.

                Book Description

This book is also concerned with world economics, but it is approached from the viewpoint of ethics. It argues that the hubris of the present global market is destroying communities and wreaking irrevocable damage to the planet: we live in a modern version of the Midas myth. Justice in its broadest sense--fair shares for all--is eloquently held up as the prime virtue of human communities. Timothy Gorringe, Professor of Systematic Theology at the University of Exeter, offers practical suggestions for an ethical transformation to replace the spiraling profit-driven economy with a steady-state economy that meets human needs, and encompasses the well-being of other species and the environment.

... but as a person who works within an aggressive corporate environment that is motivated only by the greed for more profit at any expense, I found the book excellent at highlighting the lack of morality in modern business and economics. If the reviewer below is reproducing all those quotes to state that the book is pie in the sky all I can say is "so it should be". Goes to show how sick the current system is.

1 out of 5 stars Animal farm (Orwell) revisited.......2000-06-19

The book deals with fair shares, ethics and the global economy. It makes specific recommendations on all of these points.

The problem "Trade is largely controlled by a small number of huge corporations" "Disintegration of communities and its replacement by the market " "Tourism has now become a truly serious problem, generating mass prostitution in Thailand, the Philippines and Costa Rica". "Open up countries to competitiveness, is a current euphemism for plunder" "What we call democracies are in fact plutocracies, rule by the rich". "The sacramental quality of life has been dissolved by the priority of profit." " Free trade is intrinsically harmful" "Real love of the earth guided mankind for most of its history and has been abandoned in the last fifty years" " In Haiti as a direct result of this "free market" half the children die before age 5". "Life expectancy is fifty-three" Anyway that is better than Sierra Leone where it is 26. May be trade is even freer there. "Western society is characterised by "exterminism", a logic of annihilation as a compulsion to growth and the market society".

The solution " No emphasis on free trade. For example the inward Isles or Grenada have been reduced to dependence on a single crop by the accidents of colonial history". I thought the point would be that it was due to free trade. " Introduction of progressive income tax to be collected automatically from the rich nations and to be distributed to poor nations according to their needs" "Socialism that is democratic control of the self regulating market" I wonder why control is necessary if it is self-regulating. May be this is meant by democratic control " The problems we face are so big that we may only be able to overcome them and we need governments capable of rallying far more effectively than could be possible in a democratic setting". "If the issue for mankind is survival, such governments may be unavoidable." The animal farm! "Do away with intellectual property right". "We should encourage the sharing of knowledge". I checked if this applied to this book. Oh no. "It shall not be lent, hired out or otherwise circulated." Sorry. "Work in the arms trade is illegitimate". Conversion to civil tasks. "I can list five thousand new products, beginning with systems for renewable energy to monitoring and control devices... that could combat our biggest killer cardiovascular disease" These ideas are not from the author but from a person he knows, Professor Michael Cooley, "a leading aircraft design engineer" "There are grounds for hope in Local Exchange Trading Schemes (LETS) people trade skills without recourse to money"

With these solutions " justice can roll down in torrents, and mercy as a mountain stream".

The above quotes are all in the book. Most of the book consists of quotes of others, so several are quotes of quotes.

The author is Professor of Systematic Theology at the University of Exeter in the UK.

                  Book Description

This collection of essays explores the ethical issues that arise when information technology seems to exceed and even contradict the purpose of its creators. The studies focus upon the management of information technology, specifically the Internet, considering the most ethical ways of generating, using, and controlling information technology in our time.

Section One includes essays pertaining to Africa's place in the 21st century, including democracy, information flow, connections with the world through the Internet, telecommunications, Uganda and the digital divide, and an examination of a pilot study in South Africa for developing a universal tool to measure information poverty. The essays of Section Two cover topical library issues, such as professional information organizations and their ethic codes, communicating ethics when teaching electronic research to undergraduates, pay-for-placement search engines, consumer health information services, laws applying to confidentiality of library records, privacy control after September 11, cybercrime investigation, and the technologies protecting copyright. The essays were originally presented at the "Ethics of Electronic Information in the 21st Century" symposium held at the University of Memphis on October 24-27, 2002. Each includes references and helpful Internet resources.
