5 out of 5 stars This book has transformed my professional life from an amateur to a professional.......2007-08-31

Greg McCann's book has transformed my professional life from an amateur to a professional. Without this book and all of its insight about social intelligence, I would not have progressed so much in all of the walks of my life. Not only has this book taught me how to fully take responsibility for my work, as an aspiring entrepreneur When Your Parents Sign the Paychecks has raised my standard for my goals and the way I plan to accomplish them.

One common misconception about this book might be "I don't have a family business; therefore this book may not be for me." Well after reading this book, I can tell you that that statement is false. I am not from a family business, although I have definitely recommended this text to those families in all stages of business and transition. This book will give you a new outlook on a way you can transform your business as well as your life. If you follow all the exercises and look into topics discussed in the book, such as the life plan and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, your professional life will improve greatly. The life plan that Dr. Greg McCann has you do in a latter chapter of the book is the best exercise I have ever done in my life.

As a young man still trying to figure things out, I have found this book to be a guideline for me. This guideline has really helped me bring my parents back into my life, not only by me being able to be myself but also in discussing my plan with them. The book also showed me ways and habits of communication within my close network of friends and family which has helped me in countless situations. The amount of self-assurance that I received after reading this was priceless and really put things into prospective for me.

Lastly I would like to comment on the way the book is written. Not only was it a compelling read, it challenged me to look back at myself and see the big picture. While I was reading it, I really felt like I had a life coach talking to me. The book's layout is well structured too; with key definitions and charts laid out to help you truly understand the material. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to get serious about their life - for parents and students of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable reference for new family business employees.......2007-08-29

I'm approaching my one-year anniversary working for a medium-sized, but growing, family business. The majority of my career - nearly 20 years, however, has been spent moving up the corporate ladder. Greg's book was an invaluable guide to exploiting the opportunities, and avoiding the pitfalls, of such a business. Thanks to reading it, I hit the ground running, with eyes wide open!

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone considering working in their family business.......2007-08-20

As a professional with one of the world's top firms serving the next generation of families who own businesses and families of wealth,I found this book to be the best resource I have found to assist young people in their career quest. The author articulates the issues I hear about from my clients every day in his description of the "eight challenges". These challenges face anyone considering working with their family business. This structure provides a systematic, step-by-step process that has never before been available. The best part is that it goes beyond just talking about it in terms of a career decision and goes deeper helping individuals assess their passions and thinking in terms of what is best for them, their family and the business.

It is about self development and awareness for individuals and includes tools that can help a family get along better and have a more successful business. At its core it helps young people take ownership for their lives, a core issue at this life stage, especially when your family owns a business and/or has great wealth.

The book is written in a voice that makes it accessible for an audience of teenagers but in my opinion it is extremely useful for all ages including parents and advisors working with family owned businesses. It even comes with a Parents Guide to coach the senior generation how to best be a productive part of their child's use of this book.

In my experience I have never read a book that has given me so much insight into how to advise members of the next generation and I would recommend this book to anyone considering working with their family, parents who own a family business and advisors who work with families in business.

    Fantastic and fun read!

5 out of 5 stars A unique and seminal work .......2007-07-09

Most family businesses don't survive the next generation of family members. "When Your Parents Sign The Paychecks: Finding Career Success Inside Or Outside The Family Business" by Greg McCann (Founder of the Family Business Center, Stetson University and the family business consulting firm of McCann & Associates ) offers a comprehensive and superbly organized guide to having a career within or without the family business. Professor McCann teaches the reader how to create and evaluate an education and career plan where decisions are made for the right reason instead of by default; develop 'marketability' for themselves instead of merely feeling entitled to a position through nepotism; build a career portfolio, obtain work experience outside their family business, and recruit objective mentors for themselves. Of special note is what Professor McCann has to say about preserving relationships while dealing with family expectations with respect to entering the family business; the importance of attitude and communication styles; and avoiding the downside of undeserved pay and benefits arising from participation in a family business. Using examples of three young people with family businesses, "When Your Parents Sign The Paychecks" deals with 'the amateur', 'the semipro', and 'the professional'. If you have a family business that you'd like to see your children take on, of if you are the child of a parent with a family business expecting you to take over, you need to give Professor McCann's "When Your Parents Sign The Paychecks" a close and careful reading. This is a unique and seminal work that should be a part of every college and community library's Jobs & Careers reference collection.

Although this book has a few good points,it is basically just a religious tract in book form. If you are looking for a book that has some real meat in it about how to do well in retirement--and Bible-thumping offends you, as it does me--give this one a pass. I seldom can bring myself to throw away a book, but this one went into the dumpster with no regrets.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Book--Truthful, Challenging, AND Entertaining!.......2001-04-22

I just recently finished this book, and all I can say is "WOW!" Jeff Gunhus writes in a very straightforward, down-to-earth style that is very conversational. It's like having a wise older friend show you the ropes in life.

Filled with inspiring quotes, the book made me excited about life and about career choices. Having grown up a great deal in the past few years out of college (I'm 25), pretty much everything Gunhus wrote rang true for me. Trust me, you younguns' still in college can USE THIS BOOK! If I had read it, it might have saved me from a lot of heartache and depression, upon graduating from university with a 3.8 GPA and being totally unable to find a job in my field (that challenged and motivated me.)

This book is a great investment. It's very inspirational, and gets you excited about life. Most importantly, YOUR LIFE. Mr. Gunhus pulls no punches. He makes it clear to the reader that if you want success and happiness, YOU MUST PURSUE IT. Cuz it ain't gonna just come to you, folks! That perfect job isn't gonna come a'knockin' on your door!

One of the most useful parts of the book to me was the section on resumes and cover letters. You must be tenacious and direct in order to get a job these days. BUY THIS BOOK and you'll be on your way!

PS: I also thought the first book reviewer wasn't too wise. I think Mr. Gunhus' book title is amusing and truthful. That other "parachute" book was boring to me, a young person.

5 out of 5 stars Help for the confused graduate.......2001-04-10

As I get closer to graduation I have some serious concerns about what comes next: Do I go straight to graduate school? Do I get a job, but what kind? Do I do both? No Parachute Required has given me the inspiration to grab my diploma and then take charge of my life. I now feel I have the tools I need to turn what I learned in class into something meaningful for my future. I only wish I had read this book a few years ago, while I was still in school ... I think I would have done a few things differently.

      4 out of 5 stars A career services professional's viewpoint.......2001-04-07

It seems that the Library Journal review of Jeff Gunhus's "No Parachute Required" is rather mean-spirited, to say the least. It is seldom that one reads a book review in which the reviewer cannot cite any merit to the piece, and that makes one uneasy. The reviewer seems to take particular offense to the title and marketing, which she sees as a jab at the fine work of Richard Bolles, a motivator and guru with decades of experience. Perhaps it can be argued that the title slyly acknowledges Bolles as the standard.

I am a recently retired veteran of a thirty-year career in student advising and employer relations, including positions as Assistant Dean/Director of Career Services at UCLA, Southwestern University School of Law, and Loyola Law School. I have never met Mr. Gunhus, but was asked by him, via telephone, to look over an early draft and was subsequently contacted by the publisher to make a statement on an advance proof. I therefore feel qualified to speak about the unfairness of a cranky reviewer and, more importantly, able to state that the book has considerable merit. It is a book that speaks to its own generation, and that is one of its strengths. It is a young man's book about young people interested in entrepreneurial and creative careers, and the plain need to earn a paycheck, and it speaks forcefully and well.

Like most business-side writers, as opposed to academics or career services professionals, Mr. Gunhus speaks about his business and the lessons from that work. This seems valid enough. His use of quotes is a common motivational technique, and any quote-adverse reader can ignore the insets easily enough. I found them to be well-chosen when I read the final piece.

College grads and twenty- or thirty-somethings considering business or creative work frequently fall into passivity and confusion. This is understandable because of the complexity of choices, and the increased anxious parental pressures. Mr. Gunhus's enthusiasm about goal-setting and having faith in oneself is energizing to read. Perhaps this quality is what struck the Library Journal reviewer as excess, but the examples she presents of the author's advice seem to misrepresent his viewpoint.

The sharp sword of a book reviewer completing a critique by indicating that it is nap time for her may be a shade too trite, even harsh, to make some entirely trust her good faith as a critic. "No Parachute Required" is solid, standard career-planning and job-search material from a pleasing and lively author. It should be appealing to the under-35 audience without a childhood job dream in place. In this reviewer's opinion, it is well-written prose and should sell extremely nicely to the intended audience.

For a very young working man to research and draft a book, sell it to a publisher, and have a highly competitive piece in a saturated career-guide market is reason enough to trust his advice and purchase and read the book.

5 out of 5 stars If you are in College you need to read this now !.......2001-04-06

The Job market is slowing down. Getting rich out of college is a myth. Gunhus's book helps prepare students for the reality of job hunting and helps them package themselves for the future.

5 out of 5 stars Most Cutting Edge Career Insight Ever!!!!.......2001-04-05

Tired of mundane career jargon? Then jump into No Parachute Required!!! I loved its every page as I found a truer view of not only getting a job, but also getting a lifestyle that I love living. Don't buy this book if you want to sit in a cubicle for the next 15 yrs. Only buy this book if you want to step outside the box of a normal job search and into an open world of opportunity.

Too often we seek the silver bullet instead of the silver strategy.
While Dr. Caroselli's work is not ground breaking in it's information, it does provide a pracitcal template for self actualization.
To me, providing a process for promotion is worth several times the cost of the book.
        A recommended read.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2004-05-29

        4 out of 5 stars Focused View.......2002-12-02

What I found useful was the focus which examined three fundamental reasons which motivate self-promotion - a bigger paycheck, greater prestige, and more power. The author provides clear insight and suggests practical ways to go beyond the job in order to achieve these three.

2 out of 5 stars Common knowledge ideas.......2002-08-27

This is a good topic that I aroused my interest. However, the book doesn't follow through. Perhaps the topic is too broad to be covered well, but most of the ideas in this book are so obvious or out of reach, that I didn't find much use in it. For example, Caroselli suggests that you 'coin a memorable phrase.' Well if I could do that, I would be writing jingles for an ad agency. Other ideas like 'get a part time job', 'present a proposal to your boss' and 'develop your personal power' don't offer any insight, don't provide nuggets of opportunity. They just take up a few pages.

5 out of 5 stars The best little book on personal finance........2006-02-14

First, read the other reviews for this book because they are right on target! This is a great little book that gets right to the point...how to make your money work for you. It is a simple, yet effective plan for reaching your goals and managing your money. If you want a book on investing and frugal shopping, this is not the book. This book is all about planning and making that plan work. I strongly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars How I bought the farm.......2002-02-21

With little money to deal with, I couldn't believe that this book could do anything for me. Finally after a year of letting it collect dust, my husband and I tried it out. We set goals for 1,3,5 and 10 years separately and then together. In less than three years we purchased the 5 acre farm with farmhouse just by following the instructions in this little bitty book. I recommend it very highly to anyone who is in debt and wants out and to anyone who just wants to get more out of the money they make. Like I said, you don't have to have much money -- this books tells you step by step how to use it better.

5 out of 5 stars You can make your paycheck last!.......2002-02-07

This is a great book. I lent my copy to someone and now must replace it. I recommend this book to any and everyone who wants to top living paycheck to paycheck. Why? Because it is simple and easy to follow. And best of all, painless!

5 out of 5 stars This Is A Great Money Management System!.......2001-07-31

I read finance books as a hobby. Of all the books I've read on budgeting and personal finance, this is the best. I use this system today and have for several years. It does not teach how to invest. It does not focus on getting out of debt and staying out of debt, though you will be able to do that if you follow the system. It shows how to set up a simple but effective budgeting system. My recommendation: read it!

5 out of 5 stars This book is very important to help you figure out your $........1999-06-07

By the end of just the second chapter (if you follow the directions and do what it says) you will be so pumped about this book.

You will feel like you finally got your life into gear and can actually SAVE MONEY to buy things in the future and save for emergencies when you never have been able to before!

        This book is awesome!

                Book Description

Working Across Cultures was the general theme of the 9th Annual Conference of the European Business Ethics Network (EBEN), which took place at the Lufthansa Training Center, Seeheim, Germany, in September 1996. Representatives from both the business scene and different academic disciplines discussed perspectives for ethical solutions of managing dilemmas in a world of cultural diversity, where differing norms and values are at the heart of all activities of multinational corporations.
Among the multifaceted discussion, three special focuses attracted particular attention. The first highlight was set by Peter Duncan, CEO of Shell Germany, who addressed the conference theme with the background of Shell's dramatic experiences in the Brent Spar and Nigeria affairs.
Second, renowned experts discussed the problem of international corruption, which was significantly introduced with a keynote address by Hon. Frene Ginwala, Speaker of the South African Republic's Parliament. Third, the role of values in corporate transformation was debated from the perspective of leading European firms.
This book is a collection of the most interesting and topical presentations of the conference, which should be of interest for business and academic people who are concerned with ethical advances in intercultural business activities.
