Why France like to forget this period.......2004-10-06
I found this book to be one of the most complete history of Vichy France I have read in a long time. The premise of the book appears to be very straight forward, Vichy France was an not only a collaborator ally of Third Reich but continued with unusual zeal, their persecution of the Jews within their borders. Vichy France's zealous anti-Semitic practices apparently surpassed most of Hitler's other allies including Italy. What seem to be so sad was the this phenomonen was not restricted to the government officials but to the French population overall within the Vichy borders. The book also shows how readily Vichy France supported Hitler's Germany and such supports seem to be a collective effort.
The book proves to be well written and superbly researched. It was easy reading as history book goes and I enjoyed the prose and flow of the writing. Its definitely is a very uncompromising look at a nation and people who actions have been overlooked too long simply because some of them were actually our allies during the Second World War.
After reading this book, its pretty clear why every French who lives through this period quickly associated themselves with the resistence movements which many of them were helping to suppressed during the war. Its a sad story of a nation who sold their soul to the devil and used their defenseless Jewish citizens to appleased that devil.

Book Description
From 1940 to 1942, French secret agents arrested more than two thousand spies working for the Germans and executed several dozen of them—all despite the Vichy government’s declared collaboration with the Third Reich. A previously untold chapter in the history of World War II, this duplicitous activity is the gripping subject of The Hunt for Nazi Spies, a tautly narrated chronicle of the Vichy regime’s attempts to maintain sovereignty while supporting its Nazi occupiers.
Simon Kitson informs this remarkable story with findings from his investigation—the first by any historian—of thousands of Vichy documents seized in turn by the Nazis and the Soviets and returned to France only in the 1990s. His pioneering detective work uncovers a puzzling paradox: a French government that was hunting down left-wing activists and supporters of Charles de Gaulle’s Free French forces was also working to undermine the influence of German spies who were pursuing the same Gaullists and resisters. In light of this apparent contradiction, Kitson does not deny that Vichy France was committed to assisting the Nazi cause, but illuminates the complex agendas that characterized the collaboration and shows how it was possible to be both anti-German and anti-Gaullist.
Combining nuanced conclusions with dramatic accounts of the lives of spies on both sides, The Hunt for Nazi Spies adds an important new dimension to our understanding of the French predicament under German occupation and the shadowy world of World War II espionage.

Book Description
Through hundreds of photographs and documents never before or rarely seen, Collaboration and Resistance offers an unprecedented view of life in France during the German occupation in World War II. Plumbing an archival source that only recently has begun to yield its secrets, the authors have gathered an astonishing collection of photographs, posters, newspaper pages, and leaflets-most from the Vichy government's Office of Propaganda-covering every aspect of life under Vichy rule.
Commentaries by eight distinguished French historians squarely confront an uncomfortable time in their nation's past: the oppressive German presence, the Vichy government's uneasy alliance with both Germany and domestic ultraright-wing groups, and the heroic defiance of the Resistance. With its stunning graphic images, Collaboration and Resistance presents an incomparably vivid portrait of this important slice of history.
300 black-and-white photographs, 9 1/2 x 11"
JEAN-PIERRE AZMA, YVES DURAND, ROBERT FRANK, and PASCAL ORY teach at various universities in France; JACQUELINE EICHART created the photo archive of the French government's Documentation Franaise; DENIS MARCHAL is historic adviser to the Mmorial museum in Caen; DENIS PESCHANSKI and DOMINIQUE VEILLON are members of the Institut d'Histoire du Temps Prsent of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique.

A hackneyed repot with limited critical interpretation.......2000-06-06
This book is a popular retelling of the lives of four major figures, all of whom were marked by the horror of the Great World War I. Gene Smith, a well-known author, puts these lives in the dramatic context of the First and, for Petain and Eden, Second World War. There is little that ties these four lives together, and the book is strong on atmosphere but weak on analysis and interpretation. Smith's thesis centers around his proposed study of the reason for demise of such great men. He cites this reason as being WWI, which pulled these men from the history in which they were so great, and placed them in a 'new' world that would require new men with new minds to develop. A strong point thus is made, though Smith does little to give any fresh perspectives whatsoever in his analysis.

Book Description
In Reign of Virtue, Miranda Pollard explores the effects of military defeat and Nazi occupation on French articulations of gender in wartime France.
Drawing on governmental archives, historical texts, and propaganda, Pollard explores what most historians have ignored: the many ways in which Vichy's politicians used gendered images of work, family, and sexuality to restore and maintain political and social order. She argues that Vichy wanted to return France to an illustrious and largely mythical past of harmony, where citizens all knew their places and fulfilled their responsibilities, where order prevailed. The National Revolution, according to Pollard, replaced the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity with work, family, and fatherland, making the acceptance of traditional masculine and feminine roles a key priority. Pollard shows how Vichy's policies promoted the family as the most important social unit of a new France and elevated married mothers to a new social status even as their educational, employment, and reproductive rights were strictly curtailed.

Book Description
This book examines the role of the Vichy regime in bringing about profound changes in the French colonial empire after World War II. In the war’s aftermath, the French colonial system began to break down. Indochina erupted into war in 1945 and Madagascar in 1947, while Guadeloupe chose an opposite course, becoming territorially part of France in 1946.
The book traces the introduction of an integralist ideology of “National Revolution” to the French colonial realm, shedding new light on the nature of the Vichy regime, on the diversity of French colonialism, and on the beginnings of decolonization. Encompassing three very different regions and cultures, the study reveals both a unity in Vichy’s self-reproduction overseas and a diversity of forms which this ideological cloning assumed.
World War II is often presented as an agent of change in the French colonial empire only insofar as it engendered a loss of prestige for France as colonizer. The author argues that Marshal Philippe Pétain’s Vichy regime contributed to decolonization in a much more substantial way, by ushering in an ideology based on a new, harsher brand of colonialism that both directly and indirectly fueled indigenous nationalism.
The author also rejects the popular notion that Nazi pressure lurked behind the Vichy government’s colonial actions, and that the regime lacked any real agency in colonial affairs. He shows that, far from allowing the Germans to run French colonies from behind the scenes, Vichy leaders vigorously promoted their own undiluted form of ultra-conservative ideology throughout the French empire. They delivered to the colonies an authoritarianism that not only elicited fierce opposition but sowed the seeds of nationalist resurgence among indigenous cultures. Ironically, the regime awoke long-dormant nationalist sentiments by introducing to the empire Pétain’s cherished themes of authenticity, tradition, folklore, and völkism.

A new look at France in the colonies.......2003-11-06
In 1973 Stanford University historian questioned whether or no anything new could be said about Vichy France. In response to his rhetorical question, Wright pointed out the revisionist work of Robert Paxton - VICHY FRANCE - OLD GUARD AND NEW ORDER 1940 - 1944. Paxton challenged the traditinal myths of French resistence and atacked France's edited memory of their collaboration with the Germans. Eric T. Jennings demonstrates that he is an heir to Paxton's revisionism in this work. Through the use of a comparative study of three colonial possessions in the outer reaches of the French Empire from 1940 - 1944, Jennings describes and interprets Marshall Petain's unique brand of colonialism, a subject, according to Jennings, that has been largely ignored by other historians.
The gist of Jenning's argument is that in the selected colonies, there was no German presence. With no Germans, he questions why the Vichy colonial officials were so repressive. A recurring theme in the three exampes cited is the underlying rejection of republicanism in the colonies by the French administratin. Jennings demonstrates the points made by Paxton, namely, that the Vichy government, in the metropole and in the colonies went beyond what the Germans required in terms of anti Semitism, ultra conservatism, authoritarianism and anti republicanism and formulated policies and practices that were anti Masonic, anti Communistic and ardently Catholic.
Prior to the coming of the Vichy government, colonial administrators, particulary in Guadeloupe advocated assimilation and officially per pounded ideas of "Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity." In Madagascar and Indochina the colonies could anticipate at best an association with France. But at heart of the colonial empire, even before the Vichy government, was a belief in Social Darwinism that saw the indigenous people of the colonies as proper subjects for domination, not citizens of France. True equality had never really been anticipated. So when the opportunity present itself the true colors of the colonial administrators emerged.
Jennings argued that the repressive tactics of the French colonial administration back fired on the French. Little did they realize that the tactics galvinized dissent in the colonies and provided unintended fertilizer for the already fertile ground of colonial nationalism. To Jennings, the four years he described mark a crossroads of colonialism and post colonialism.
Jennings, however, gives no agency to the indigeous people. It seems to me that there would have been strong nationalist movements even without the pressure from the French. In addition, I think that Jennings gives to much credence to de Gaulle and the Free French. Jennings uses local records to present a part of French history that has been ignored by other historians. The book considers a subject that is in much need or research for its own sake and for its impact on the subject of Vicy France and French mentalities.

Book Description
A middle-aged woman with a teenage son rediscovers her Quaker faith, and quits her urban life for a homestead in the woods of Vermont.
"I lived a straight-edged life, a cubist arrangement of familiar rectangles: office, computer screen, paycheck, city blocks, mortgage, calendar pages, television screen. These were more confining than I knew. Most confining of all, for most of those years, was the four-square house I occupied like a resentful ghost through half my marriage...I am no longer a ghost in my life." --from the Prologue
A Stone Bridge North is the author's own story of "miracles found and fears allayed" in the journey out of a confining urban existence and into a simpler, more joyous life. To tell this story fully, she must look through changed eyes at her past-at childhood anxieties, family disaffections, failed marriages, late motherhood, restless boredom, and, paradoxically, a native talent for joy. She learns that she has been guided by faith even when she thought she had none. She begins to discern purpose and design both in her stories and in the light by which she sees them-a light refracted through a Quaker lens that searches for the sacred in all people. As the four seasons turn, she celebrates the loves of her new life-family, friends, language, silence, and the extraordinary landscape of Vermont.
Customer Reviews:
inspirations as well as reflections.......2003-11-02
I'm another reader of this book who is not a Quaker, nor do I play one on TV. That said, I was fascinated and moved by Ms. Maloy's memoir spanning 10 very significant months in her life. For readers contemplating any major life change, this book provides both inspiration and wisdom.
A Moving and important memoir.......2003-09-08
Kate Maloy has written a lovely and moving book. To attempt a memoir is one thing; to write it without me-me-me is a true art (not to mention a reflection on the selflessness of the writer). Not once during this read did I hear ego or judgment and I never had the feeling that the author was in therapy and was compelled to write this book. Instead, I felt as if the life she lived... and the discoveries she made perhaps moments before writing... were what she chronicled. She lived, she learned, and then she told us about it. The author spared us the angst, but not the profound revelations generated by that angst.
A Life Being Fully Lived.......2003-02-16
Kate Maloy has the life I want to live. We have similar backgrounds, including age, gender, past marriages, Quakerism and more. So perhaps I should seek that life -- it's out there, she proves so in this book.
This is not a light or superficial book -- it is rich and shines with deep thoughts and reflection. She includes all the wrinkles, twists and lines that real life brings to us. In this book she shares the kinds of things you might think about, but not speak, the contents of a personal journal, introspective and quite true.
She has managed to make the most of her life, and this book is a wonder to read. Her writing style is one that invites the reader along, and I felt (as you probably will) as if this was part of a conversation with a close friend, part with myself, part simply a life viewed through a warm and inviting window.
She writes about so much, this book is incredibly full -- I'm not done yet reading it again and again.
A quote I love, "Long before I ever met Alan, I wondered if any man of my generation could love a woman his own age, could feel passion (and compassion) for her aging, vulnerable flesh, could open himself to a soul-deep love even as he himself loses muscle tone, stamina and hair -- could well and truly stand naked in front of another and not be ashamed. Now I know there is at least one such man on the planet."
Sigh. This Friend speaks for me.
An uplifting, warming reading for cool nights and warm days, too.
Serenity Earned Every Day.......2003-01-25
I'm not a Quaker and I've never attended a Meeting. Although I consider any religion that calls its practitioners Friends a step in the right direction, my motivations in reading SBN were strictly secular. I was first drawn to the book because I have enormous respect for the publisher. The cover also spoke to me. The simplicity and purity of it. A single stand of snow covered trees. And I've always been intrigued by bridges as metaphors, so the title was perfect. There's no doubt that SBN is a book of the spirit in the sense that it's a look at the effects of Quakerism in the writer's life. And this is a strong theme of the book. To say otherwise would be misleading and disingenuous. But the book is so much more than that, too generous with its reach, too honest in its outpouring of contemplations, too bighearted and open-minded to be pigeonholed as a theological dogmatic text. It is indeed a soulful book, but it offers its deep solitude, silence and solace to all. For some unknown reason I dipped into the book haphazardly, rather than reading it linearly, which did not ruin the experience for me. Covering a rapid and transitional year in her life, it alternates between journal-type entries and short and long meditations on all things human: emotions, food, television, our education system, everyday life, and even the internet, which becomes another form of metaphysical uplifting for the author. It turns out she's met her new husband on the web. Some of their communications back and forth, via re-mail, are included in the book. That atypical love story is just one of the truly fine, honest - and surprising - things that the author reflects on. They all conjoin into the story of a lifechange. An intelligent, quietly passionate, appealing, and insightful story of the process of continuing to make oneself a better person through faith in life and in each other.
I'm Kate Maloy's ex-husband. Here's my recommendation........2003-01-11
I'm Kate Maloy's ex-husband. She speaks about me in her good book, A Stone Bridge North, anonymously, because she was considerate enough to try to protect the guilty.
Because I figure in her book, but not in especially complementary terms, I figure that potential buyers or readers of her book might be interested in my take on it.
It's a captivating story of emotional venture and spiritual adventure, with author-centered but gifted, exquisite reflections on the meaning of the struggle - in terms with which anyone can empathize - to enrich a life, a marriage, a sense of self, one's soul.
It's also a guarranteed page-turner, a compelling story of the roles of reflective struggle and the mystery of grace in amazing turns of life.
The story of how Kate found the wonderful man who became her soul-mate and new husband is, simply, amazing by any standard.
Any person who ever wondered how - by concerted effort or by gentle grace - life can, indeed, take magnificent turns needs to read this book. And take heart.
