Customer Reviews:
Best bonds book for novices .......2007-04-08
I have 4-5 books on bond finance -- of all introductory-level bond books this is my favorite. Most books on bonds put me to sleep -- not this one.
It covers all the major topics without patronizing the reader. My one complaint is about the physical construction of the book. It's not available in HB and the cover is quite flimsy and curls easily. In fact this seems to be characteristic of the "Getting Started" series. The publisher needs to improve the durability of the binding.
License to Compound.......2005-02-20
This is an excellent book for someone with moderate knowledge of the stock market and is interested in learning about bonds. I would not recommend this for complete beginners because there are many references to economics and finance that might be difficult for a first time investor to understand. It seems best suited for intermediate investors.
Getting Started in Bonds does a great job explaining the various types of bonds available: treasury, municipal, corporate, mortgage backed securities, etc. It will make you aware of the options you have available when searching for a good deal. It also puts you in a good mode for taking all factors into account such as the possible tax advantages of a particular bond, determining how much liquidity you want with your bonds, etc.
Overall, it's a good reference to have on hand. It also helps to read more than once, as there are many things to remember. However, I am surprised at the amount of useful information crammed into this small easy-to-read book. Investors, as well as business students, will find this book Getting Started in Bonds an excellent investment.
Excellent Guide to the Bond Market!.......2000-03-19
This book is brimming with information on bonds. It is a straightforward guide for people just getting started in the bond market. The examples and definitions are extremely useful, and help to demystify the subject. And it is easy to read!
A useful primer on the bond markets.......1999-08-24
I quite liked the style - it is an easy book to read. It has quite a few useful tips of the trade. It is obviously an introductory level text and skates over most of the technicalities, but it's very good on the stuff that it does cover. There are one or two typographical errors (mislabelled diagrams etc.) that may cause a bit of confusion. Overall though, I thought that it was very good.

Online investing has become one the Internet's early "killer apps." Thanks to low commissions and the wealth of investing information available online, individual investors have shown themselves all too eager to bypass traditional brokerage firms in favor of the many brokerages that are opening shop on the World Wide Web. If you're not connected with an online brokerage or well versed in finding information about investing on the Internet, then Invest Online, by LauraMaery Gold and Dan Post, is a good place to start. This book is a database of the wealth of information available online, with hundreds of URLs pointing to the best places to find research reports, technical analysis, charting, and online portfolio managers. It also includes a brief survey of online brokerages, but shows a bias toward E*Trade, whose logo appears on the cover and whose CEO, Christos M. Cotsakos, wrote the book's forward.

Customer Reviews:
Very interesting read.......2000-05-22
I really appreciated the way this book explained the ins and outs of investing. I'm fairly computer literate, so I skipped the parts explaining how to get online, but those were, thankfully, contained in a single chapter. The rest of the book is very readable, and contrary to what another reviewer said, the E-Trade affiliation was pretty much limited to a chapter demonstrating how to trade online. To be fair, this book does appear to be a joint effort with E-Trade. But the authors' advice is generic, and very, very well-written. I'd recommend it highly to anyone getting started in online investing. A suggestion to the writers if they're reading this: If you update the book, make a Web site!
Probably the best source to get started with........1999-07-27
There are a lot of books about investing and investing online and a dozen webpages for every book. None of them give to you a really good entry point and they leave a lot of essential fundamental terms undefined, which to us neophytes is maddening.
This book might be a little bit superficial, depending on your personal knowledge and experience, but I have found it to be a good review and survey of the subject and it addresses a few things I've over looked.
Remember, it is trying to develop a knowledge base in the individual that addresses computer basics and the computer's role as an enabling tool and the really almost unrelataed subject of investing. And, of course how the computer makes it possible for anyone can use the former as a tool for accomplishing the latter.
I'm sure many of the web references have changed. I have not had time to check them out. Usually changes mean the page has been up-graded or it has died. The online investor will have to learn how to pursue this from experince. If he is not willing to do this he doesn't want to be investing online.
The major weakness I noted was the introduction to part II promises to help the reader develop a strategy. It gets started but peters out. Most importantly they don't discuss development of entry and exit criteria and realization of profits and timing. "Holding and folding" (when), needs to be discussed.
They give some pretty good one paragraph descriptions of the most basic technical indicators, but they talk about doing this AFTER you've acquired the equity.
The cover talks about saving commissions as being paramount. We all want to do that but our real objective to grow our investment in a way that will suit our needs.
Finally, like so many "how to" books, Gold and Post leave out the personal element, which indicates they are pretty fair reporters, but I am not sure they've tried any or all of the recipes they put in their books.
Since the book was written in 1997 it is ready to be up-dated. Technology and services on-line have blossomed since then.
But my intitial evaluation still holds, It's the best book I've found for the person getting started. But like most things, it doesn't do your work for you, but you might have a clue where to start and where to find out out more and how some of it fits together.
This reference book is referencing you everywhere else........1999-01-14
I am a beginner investor and I am very disappointed with this book. This book gives all kinds of internet address's to look up for investing information. But I bought the book so that so that I wouldn't have to do all the research on the internet. Furthermore, several of the internet addresses come up "not found".
More About the Internet Than Investing.......1998-11-30
After insulting your intelligence with BASIC computer operation this book launches into two different areas which consume 95% of it's content: 1) Search engine results and 2) A never-ending advertisement for E-Trade.
As a fan of Lasser's tax books I was at a loss to explain this work. $15.95 is a lot to pay for 230 pages of search engine results. A better title would have been, "Web Sites for Investing Idiots"! Even my being a novice invester did not help this book to teach me anything new.
Very insightful and full of resources.......1998-09-02
I was looking for a resource that gave me all the answers to my questions, this book did just that. Many resources, e-mail addresses and subjects grouped in a well organized fashion. This is a very easy to read book and I highly recommend it to all beginner and intermediate online-investors

Book Description
The Ethical Travel Guide is a natural follow-up to Tourism Concern’s hugely successful “Good Alternative Travel Guide” – it is the essential global resource for responsible travelers.
Find hundreds of new ideas for your next holiday and visit amazing communities not listed in other guidebooks. If you are tired of tourist traps and "guilt trips," or just want to have a positive impact on local people and their environment, this book is for you.
The extensive directory in this new Guide lists places to visit and stay in over sixty countries and other useful resources chosen by Tourism Concern for anyone interested in ethical and sustainable tourism – “because tourism should always benefit local people.” Chapters cover the definition of ethical tourism, what’s wrong with traditional tourism, a case study focusing on The Gambia, why it’s important to be an ethical consumer, and globalization and its effect on travel. Travel planning tips and a directory of destinations are supplemented by additional resources and a section for tour directors.
This practical guide includes destinations throughout the world, including in the United States for a wide variety of vacations, from horseback riding to beach resorts to Native American tribal homelands. The directory entries include facility descriptions, activities offered, suggested conduct, costs, and access. Web links, addresses, and phone numbers make it easy to pursue further details and to book reservations.
Customer Reviews:
not much in the US.......2007-02-02
I skimmed through this one in a bookstore, trying to decide between it and Lonely Planet Code Green.
This one definitely seemed to have the advantage in terms of unique and diverse travel ideas. It's longer and fits more ideas into each page.
But it had only one page on ethical travel in the US. At least 65% of it was devoted to Africa and Asia. There must be some ethical travel opportunities that don't require an international flight.
If you're looking for unique ideas and can affford international travel, get this book. But it doesn't have much to offer nearby.
As a side note, the glossier Lonely Planet Code Green, though it has more ideas in the US, is also far from perfect (see my review of that book for more detail).
A host of alternative opportunities.......2006-09-24
THE ETHICAL TRAVEL GUIDE: YOUR PASSPORT TO EXCITING ALTERNATIVE HOLIDAYS is for any sick of tourist traps and guilt trips - or who want to use their tourism dollars to have a positive impact on local people. From construction projects in Tibet to ecolodge accommodations, THE ETHICAL TRAVEL GUIDE offers a host of alternative opportunities.

Interesting book of personal reflections.......2007-07-14
Benne is a conservative theologian and ethicist in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. (Concordia Publishing House is the publisher for the more conservative Lutheran Church Missouri Synod). This is a collection of essays and personal reflections on a varity of subjects. Included are thoughts of on the state of Lutheran-Christian education, war, entertainment and a varity of other subjects. Benne, originally from the mid-west, went to be a sixties left centered pastor-professor, who found himself moving from the vanguard of the left, into a swing towards the right, as the various movements went beyond their original goals of equality, into something much different.

This insightful volume explores this question in its examination of such issues as protection of natural ecology and resources, gender inequalities, mass unemployment, and the intergenerational contract. - Integrity in Journalism
- Confidential Sources
- The Profit Motive in Medicine
To help students see the common underlying ethical themes across these fields of inquiry, Serafini has written introductions to each section to ferret out the affinities and connections between the articles.

Book Description
There is an old saying: The only two things you can count on in life are death and taxes. That may have been true in the past, but there are opportunities that can substantially reduce your tax burden, and, in some cases, relieve you of it entirely. Several countries and jurisdictions throughout the world offer impressive incentives and plans through which you can greatly minimize your tax burden.
Some have passed legislation that supports a business friendly environment providing a host of tax advantages, a minimization of red tape, and a variety of grants and special plans that are designed to increase a company's edge in an increasingly competitive economic climate. Other places offer various tax incentives to individuals. Indeed, there are places where you can live virtually tax-free. In the following pages, the most advantageous of these countries and jurisdictions will be examined. These are by no means backwater enclaves or small municipalities; they are highly desirable places to live, work, and invest. Some prefer to remain reticent about the financial benefits they offer, while others openly promote their tax and investment plans and incentives. If you genuinely desire to reduce your tax burden, all deserve careful consideration.
You might be wondering why a place would offer tax benefits to both its citizens and foreigners. By offering major tax incentives to investors, tax haven countries and jurisdictions increase the amount of money that flows into the tax haven. This money can then be used to stimulate the tax haven's economy. The underlying principal here is that low taxes result in economic growth. To take full advantage of some of these opportunities, you may need to satisfy residency requirements. Some countries require that you remain in the country for a particular length of time to benefit from tax incentives; others have few or negligible conditions that you must meet. In some, to fully take advantage of their tax laws, you must become a citizen. This is often not as daunting as it sounds, because in most cases, you will be able to carry dual citizenship. Thus, if you are a citizen of the United States, you may also become a citizen of another nation. Of course, this can become tricky unde! r some circumstances, and you should always research your situation carefully, assessing your plans and goals in the light of each country's laws. For some people, it is quite beneficial to change their citizenship if it results in major tax savings.

Tax free areas only.......2002-10-15
What I really like about this book is its deliberate limitation to tax-free areas or special tax holidays (such as 10 years no-tax for opening a small hotel or guesthouse) instead of being just another book on moving abroad. This lets you improve your income dramatically, by choosing to build a business in a place where your money is automatically worth twice as much because you don't have to pay income taxes - and that is a huge portion of the world. Overtaxed Americans and other nationalities can gain much from the advice and opportunities in this book.
Don't waste your money!.......2002-09-26
Wow, what a piece of garbage! I read the reviews on this page and thought I made a good choice. Not! I sent it back to Amazon.com, after reviewing it for 20 minutes. This book doesn't tell you why or how to, it gives you lousy information that can easily be found through public sources. I've found "the offshore money book" by Arnold Cornez to be much more valuable...
Think Globally.......2001-05-27
The stock market is an alluring playground. It's the pick up game for the financial intellectuals. In the mid to late nineties, there were few places in the Dow Jones Industrials and the NASDAQ markets to lose investments, so everyone came out of the Wall Street playground happy. Especially Uncle Sam, because this prosperity put many investors in a higher tax bracket. The more they made, the less they got after capital gains tax and other "investment penalties" Big Brother provided. You have to share the wealth with your fellow man, right? Just share your wealth that is.
Baby boomers are looking for new ways to achieve financial prosperity over and above the tax detriment. The results are always the same because that is the way the American stock and tax systems are made to work. There is a method in place that has provided the monetary aristocracy of the world a virtual tax-free existence. Did you know this system could also work for you, without costly legal and accounting fees? With the ease of a stroke of a pen you could be using the same strategies of the CEO's of multi-national conglomerates. The successful investor thinks globally, without imaginary boundaries that section us off for tax revenues. There are countries that need your investments and are willing to provide you with the tools to do it tax-free, confidentially, and legally.
An offshore book with an exciting difference.......2001-05-06
I really liked this book. Unlike books that talk only about financial privacy and tax havens, the author goes into issues of lifestyle privacy, health record privacy, insurance information, and mentions specific top quality banks and insurance firms that provide services offshore (with their contact information).
Perhaps most meaningful of all is that the author actually lives offshore, but is retired. So he writes about what he knows and practices, while so many so-called offshore books are written by American service providers who have something to sell you but don't actually live the lifestyle. This author has nothing to sell you, but lives the offshore life. He has been writing about these subjects for some 25 years -- I've read his 1970s books -- and most other books can't come close.
A good strategy for 2001 and after.......2001-02-09
Owning property or a business outside the U.S. could become a private alternative to storing wealth in a foreign bank or securities account that has to be reported to the IRS. New regulations effective on January 1, 2001 require foreign banks to report U.S. securities owned by American clients.
