Great Pictures and Even Better Designs!.......2004-02-11

I am SO glad I've added this to my library! The designs are very creative and inspiring. If you like to hand applique and are looking for something different from the usual patterns, give this a try! There are a great number of blocks and if you are creative enough you could mix and match some of the designs. All of the pictures in the book are in color and very up close for showing great detail. The last half of the book is all of the designs. I can't wait to try them out!

I can't remember buying a quilting book so beautifully written and ilustrated! The applique patterns in this book are really something. It is worth every penny you'll spend to buy it.

This book just lifted my spirits when I browsed the designs! Better than chocolate, the designs offer a flexibility of creativity for the new quilter/appliquer. Explicit and easy directions are given for mixing designs and patterns to make wall quilts or bed quilts. The flowers, vines and berries are appliqued with exhuberant brightly patterned colored fabrics, not giving heed to consistent perfection, but instead to freedom of creativity with constant attention to FLOW. Definitely different than standard boxed-in blocked quilts, this book should inspire any quilter to break out and have fun creating. Designs are spin-offs of the ancient English art of Jacobean embroidery, which was used in clothing, bed covererings, cushions, etc. The patterns (28 included) are actual size printed on glossy paper. The gallery of pictures is a class act. No boundaries!!!!

Book for the future.......2003-07-02

I realy like this book and am trying one of its projects, but it certainly isn't for the beginner or for the beginning intermediate sewer. I haven't given up yet, I plan on improving on my skills and making a lot of the other projects in this book. It is full of gorgeous quilts and patterns and I think it will be well worth the time, money, and effort once I have the skills needed to do the projects the way they are suppose to be done.

This book is as perfect as a quilt book gets. Just holding it in my hands sends me into a blissful altered state. The quilts and the designs themselves are inspired. The color combinations in the quilt blocks are an entire class in color theory. The directions are helpful and easy to follow. The text is filled with useful and fascinating information about this all-American interpretation of Jacobean design. Buy this book!

I have read many good books on praise and worship. However, I rate this one at the top of the list. It is very easy to comprehend and practical. The additional workbook and/or video can assist one better in teaching a class over a short period of time. There are lessons in the workbook with questions at the end of each chapter. I have taught from this book for years as my main resource and used other books and supplements. At any rate, it is excellent as a stand alone or with its other tools.

Forces the reader to ask tough questions about worship.......2007-09-21

Kennon Callahan is a former parish pastor, former professor at Emory University, and current church consultant/author. "Dynamic Worship" builds off his previous book, "12 Keys to an Effective Church;" specifically, it fleshes out the third key--dynamic worship. It should be noted that one does not need to read "12 Keys to an Effective Church" in order to understand "Dynamic Worship."

In this book, Callahan argues that churches would do well to recognize that their congregation exists in a mission culture and thus worship services should speak to feelings that unbelievers and believers have in common: hope for the future, help for life's pains, a feeling of community, making sense of life, and God's power/majesty. By concentrating on addressing these subjective emotional longings in an aesthetically pleasing way (while also advancing denominational doctrine), believers will be energized and encouraged to go forth in mission and unbelievers will be served effectively.

The majority of this book gives the reader practical advice for creating such a worship service and the rationale behind it. Much of Callahan's advice is good and this traditional, conservative pastor appreciated the fact that Callahan argues that traditional music in a worship service can be just as effective as praise-band or gospel music.

While this book is certainly not intended to advance a theology of worship, Callahan's theological assumptions bleed through; some of them are helpful for a church leader who is interested in growing the mission of the church, but the underlying assumptions that worship should begin from the standpoint of emotional needs, that it should be primarily uplifting and powerful, and that it should be focused on sanctified (righteous) living as opposed to the person and work of Jesus Christ (justification, forgiveness) challenges this reader's assumptions about worship and (as of this writing) do not prove to be helpful challenges. Furthermore, Callahan uncharacteristically fills this book with fuzzy, amorphous words like "hope," "Easter people," and "dynamic" without ever explaining what these words mean. How does a song or sermon express hope? How does an Easter Christian differ from a Good Friday person (who, in turn differs from a Pentecost season person)? How does one go about determining whether or not his worship service is dynamic...whatever dynamic means. How does one design and execute a worship service to reach a specific unchurched target group? Some objective definitions, criteria, and measuring tools would have made this book more helpful and less confusing.

This is not to say that this book is not worth the time it takes to read it. Callahan approaches worship from a unique, holistic perspective (based on the previously cited book), bases his book on research and anecdotal trail-and-error consulting, and continually reminds the reader of his main points. If you're considering this as your first Kennon Callahan book, I would advise you not to base your opinion on his body of work off "Dynamic Worship" alone. This book is mildly recommended as I'm sure there are better worship books out there, but it force the reader to ask himself a number of critical questions about the design and execution of worship services.

A short and to-the point presentation of critical factors in planning for successful worship services in protestant churches of all sizes. Written by a consultant in this area who knows congregations, churches, and people.

In Praise of Public Life, a slim book by Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, Democrat of Connecticut, succeeds at being several things: a call to public service, a plea for banishing cynicism from American politics, and a glimpse of what the life of a senator is like and how the Senate really works. Lieberman begins by complaining that today's public servant "must face questions not only about how he is doing his job but how he is living his life--and how he has lived his life." This poisonous atmosphere of ad hominem politics and attack-dog journalism has created an environment in which young people don't want to enter public life, writes Lieberman. He offers his own career as a tonic, describing the challenges and joys of working his way through the party ranks and achieving his dream of becoming a senator.

No book by an office-holding politician would be complete without its share of clichés ("It is leadership that the American public is asking for in its government today"), but Lieberman also offers some genuine insights for lay readers on how the Senate functions. Personal contacts are tremendously important to passing legislation, patience and persistence are perhaps a senator's two most useful character traits, and foreign trips (derided as "junkets" by the good-government crowd) represent one of the best opportunities to get to know colleagues (and therefore do business). Some parts of this book are a little boring but as you get into it you'll find that the senator's thoughts and ideas are interesting. This book was written before his vice-presidential, and presidential campagines so don't expect to hear about them but if you'r interested in knowing what he's really about read this book!

Must-read book for anyone thinking about political office.......2004-02-11

Senator Joe Lieberman's IN PRAISE OF PUBLIC LIFE is a must-read for anyone considering a run for political office. Lieberman laments the lack of interest among young people considering public life and offers reasons why such a life should be one good people pursue.

Written before he was considered for the 2000 ticket, the book became his "campaign book," but is much more than the typical tome in that cheesy genre. Lieberman's IN PRAISE OF PUBLIC LIFE is one portion autobiography, one part civics lesson, a lot of motivational inspiration to seek political office, and just a dash of theology. It is all woven together in a volume that is fast paced and easy to read.

This a great book for those giving even slight thought to a run for public office. Political junkies will love the Senator's detailed description of his political campaigns and his insider look at the U.S. senate. It is what it says - a book in praise of public life, and whether you agree or disagree with Senator Lieberman's positions on the issues, you will most likely end up admiring this man who has given so much to the public square.

A Great Look at the Senate and Government Life.......2004-02-08

Joseph Lieberman, in what came to be known as his campaign book in 2000, eloquently pleads his case, albeit somewhat subliminally, for a prominent political role in the Democratic party and the presidential election of 2000. He may have written it before he was selected to be the vice-presidential nominee but that does not remove the background purpose of this work. Each time Lieberman contends that he knows what the people want and what would serve them better than what they had previously, he seemingly points to himself and proclaims "I'm the man you want." That being said, Lieberman's purpose is justified as his Senate and Connecticut public service record will attest. He is, and continues to be, as we have seen in the 2004 presidential race, a qualified candidate with a unique outlook on issues as well as a set of perspectives and ideas on how to repair issues needed most.

He proclaims, controversially, that he is a religious man yet religion does not interfere with his function as a Senator. We have seen throughout the course of history that this is an arduous task and history will keep Lieberman in its footnotes as evidence of a separation as well as a closeness, however awkward it may seem, of church and state. Lieberman insightfully chronicles his journey from political nobody to Connecticut Attorney General then United States Senator. His observations and career path will provide insight and assistance to any person contemplating a run at political office, regardless of location or desired governmental office. Any reader who seeks a better understanding of Lieberman should find this book helpful as will any readers seeking information the nature and role a Senator can play in the goings on in America.

An intricate portrait of a complex man.......2002-12-28

Joseph Liberman isn't like other politicans, but it many ways he personifies exactly what we desire to elect into office: personality, honesty, and integrity. In his most recent novel, Senator Liberman opens with a preface and first couple of chapters that are second to none in showing how a powerful university education and lofty aspirations has helped him in his accention to the top of the political hierarchy. Through his grass-roots foundlings as the first individual to attend college in his family, I've gathered an aura of self-determinism that's seemingly very important in the world of politics. No one was driving him to seek the offices he did more than himself; he was his own political machine. His experiences in attending to the necessary evils of campain raising and meeting with disenchanted voters, the Senator delineates how an ordionary individual may look upon the life of a politican's day-to-day hussle and bustle. The constant struggle to gain leverage in a power-hungry Congress while not compromising morals is notably difficult.

"In Praise" has given me a taste of politics in a witty, succint view, and I would reccommend to anyone who has two hours to be enlightened.
