4 out of 5 stars Pretty but not easy.......2002-04-11

I find this an interesting book with some incredible origami pieces, but be careful when buying it, because it is not as easy at it seems. If you are a novice in origami, you'll need patience and orientation from someone who knows more than you. Anyway, there is indeed beautiful origami.

        5 out of 5 stars another one¡.......2001-12-28

You know, Kasahara has always been one of the pioneers, and one of the best origamists of the world, a book very interesting, you should buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Not really that amazing.......2001-08-04

I bought this book on the strength that it is by Kunihiko Kasahara. I am an admirer of his works and have attempted to collect all books by him.

There is a lot of mathematics involve so for those who like to combine mathematics and origami, this is a good book to add to your collection. If you are just interested in origami and not mathematics, perhaps, you might consider browsing it at your local book stores before deciding.

The models within are not really that amazing, in fact rather simple. These simple models are being used to illustrate the mathematics involved in the folding of the models.

The 5 platonic solids (tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, dodecahedron, icosahedron) are introduced here, the mathematics involved and how to fold it. They are very attractive to fold if the right colours are chosen. Boxes, stars, tangrams and other geometric solids are included. Most of these can be used for decorations other than studying the mathematics involve.

Whether you think this book is worth getting will depend a lot on your interest.

3 out of 5 stars A book for math teachers!!!.......2001-05-18

This book is an excellent source for math teacher, but not as good for someone that just like origami for the joy of it, because it goes in to much math and no into the beautiful models that Kunihiko Kasahara usually presents.

1 out of 5 stars Not for Novice Builders.......2007-03-25

This is definatley not a book for novices. I bought this book for my 13 year old son for the Iron Clad models to be built for a school project. We found the ships extremely difficult to make. The book recommended model cement for plastic models to glue the ships with. We tried 3 different kinds of plastic model cement and the glue would not dry. Our chubby fingers made it impossible to work with the smaller pieces of the ships. Our MONITOR looked so awful we chucked the entire idea of using the paper models and he made his project with Legos. In the end, I felt this book was a total waste of money from the modeling aspect. However the information provided in the book on each of the 18 boats was very good. Overall was a good book to read, but the models were a flop.

4 out of 5 stars A perfect gift for boating and model making enthusiasts!.......2001-06-26

I bought this book for my 9 year-old son as a birthday gift. I thought he would enjoy it since he has recently become interested in model making. The Amazing Book of Paper Boats contains interesting information about each of the boats featured in the book, but it's the model boats themselves that are truly amazing. They are printed on waterproof paper, so once you make them they actually float! My son had no trouble assembling the simpler boats, like the speed boat and the sail boat, and once he did he had a blast playing with them in the sink and tub. While the complex boats are more challenging, the book is a lot of fun and perfect for a rainy day. Highly recommended.

This is a pretty good book. The the inside-outside look of these models is eye pleasing and the models are also very challenging. This is definitely not a beginners book. The only thing I did not like is the strange bases the models are built from. All in all a good advanced origami book.

This is one of the best origami books out there. This book is for someone who has tried the simple stuff, and would like more of a challenge. Some of the animals take some time to make, but they are definitely worthwhile. I have made most of the animals, and find the colored illustrations top notch. A must for anyone who likes origami.

I have been teaching art for over twenty years. This is the first origami book I have used at the middle school level that the kids have been so excited about. They want to make a good percentage of the projects and can decode most of the instructions on their own. I can not begin to tell you how much money I have wasted in the past on inferior books with inferior projects. This one is a winner.

Flowers, animals, boxes, and buildings are among the three-dimensional paper figures that can be created with the traditional Japanese art of paper-folding. The Amazing Book of Origami includes step-by-step, full- color photographs detailing the techniques of origami and showing how to manipulate paper at each stage of preparation. As a result, the exceptionally clear instructions in this beautifully illustrated volume are easy to follow, showing the symbols, standard folds, and bases that are used to create most of the models. Proving that the rich are indeed different from you and me, Cary Reich informs us that former New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller's father, John D. Rockefeller Jr., made his children swat flies to earn their allowances, and take long single-file marches with him each Sunday. This account of Rockefeller's seemingly charmed life takes us from his boyhood on the family's estate at Tarrytown, New York to his landslide victory over Averell Harriman in the 1958 governor's race in New York. At that point Rockefeller seemed poised for the presidency--a goal that eluded him for the rest of his life.

                Book Description

A triumph of the biographer's art, The Life of Nelson A. Rockefeller is the first full-length biography of one of the most powerful, magnetic, fascinating figures on the twentieth-century stage.

Of all the great American dynastic families, few could match the combined wealth, power, and influence of the Rockefellers. And of all the Rockefellers, none was more determined to use these advantages than Nelson A. Rockefeller.

Nelson was never content to live off the fame and fortune due him as a Rockefeller. His imperious grandfather, John D. Rockefeller, and intimidating father, John Jr., set standards and boundaries that Nelson blithely ignored. He pushed for position within the family, and then broke a family taboo by taking his ambition to the forbidden world of politics. A devoted family man, he took many lovers with an almost casual sense of droit du seigneur. He surrounded himself with brilliant, devoted subordinates; he flattered and cajoled more powerful people who would also end up serving his needs.

Handsome, ferociously energetic, charming, and ruthless, Rockefeller had a rapacious appetite for life--and for power--that showed itself in the stunning breadth of his activities and in the daring of his ideas. Nelson's sunny, optimistic demeanor masked a Machiavellian mind. At a young age he wrested control of the Rockefeller Center project from his father's minions, turned the Museum of Modern Art into a world-class institution, used a midlevel bureaucratic position during World War II to run the affairs of an entire continent; through pure ego and drive he bent the United Nations conference to his will and redirected the path of history. Nelson A. Rockefeller's fierce drive to achieve would have a profound effect on a city, a state, a nation, and the world.

Cary Reich's masterful biography, eight years in the making, brings this awesome figure to life. Reich enjoyed unprecedented access to the Rockefeller family archives, scrutinized FBI and FOIA files, and interviewed over three hundred individuals for the book, including many who had never spoken about Rockefeller for the record. This two-volume work (the second to appear in 1997) will surely stand alongside the works of Robert Caro, Doris Kearns Goodwin, and David McCullough.

Cary Reich is the author of Financier: The Biography of AndrÚ Meyer. He is the former executive editor of Institutional Investor and has written numerous portraits of the powerful and the wealthy. He is the recipient of numerous journalism awards, including the Overseas Press Award, the Deadline Club Award, and the John Hancock Award for Excellence in Business and Financial Journalism. He lives in New York City.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An engrossing and suprisingly quick read.......1999-05-04

This book was a finalist for the National Book Award and it is easy to see why. Although it is an enormous book--over 700 pages and still only the first volume of this biography--it is an engrossing and amazingly quick read. Rockefeller moved in so many great circles that the book feels more like one about 20th century America than just one man. The author's fascination with Rockefeller is infectious. The fact that Cary Reich died a sudden and untimely death last year, before he could complete volume two, means that readers will be deprived, even if the writer who completes volume two does an equally superb job.

Playing on the title of his first novel, What I'm Going to Do, I Think, Larry Woiwode's fresh, endearing memoir chronicles the years leading up to its publication in 1969. He views his early life from the vantage point of the bitterly cold winter of 1996 in North Dakota, where he resides with his wife and children, seamlessly interweaving his memories with an often comic account of the mishap-fraught installation of a new wood-burning furnace. Woiwode's supple, burnished prose teems with love for his family and with religious faith all the more moving for being quietly and unpretentiously expressed. His early struggles as an actor, poet, and fiction writer gain depth from this mature perspective, which also ensures that mentions of the literary celebrities who cross his path (John Updike, Truman Capote, and Robert Lowell, among others) never seem like mere name-dropping. Woiwode's affectionate portrait of Robert De Niro, a friend since the actor was 19 and the author 21, gives a marvelously vivid sense of De Niro's idiosyncratic personality. Even more revelatory is the detailed account of Woiwode's relationship with legendary New Yorker editor William Maxwell, which shows a sensitive, challenging mentor helping a young writer find his voice. The writer frankly depicts hard times and bad moments, but his autobiography's fundamental emotion is joy. --Wendy Smith

                              Book Description

Pure, cleanly-wrought beauty. A master stylist's memoir of survival and the emergence of his craft.

In 1969 Larry Woiwode published his first novel, What I'm Going to Do, I Think, and he followed that triumphant debut with a string of stunning novels. He now turns his enormous talent to memoir in What I Think I Did, the first installment in a planned autobiographical trilogy.

On the surface What I Think I Did is two appearances at once: it is a story of surviving the severest recorded winter in North Dakota's history (1996), and it is an account of Woiwode's hungry years as an actor and writer leading up to the publication of his first novel. As with all of Woiwode's writing, however, there are wells and eddies and surfaces along the way, bubbles out of the past caught whole and alive, that make reading him pure joy. Act One, Snow with Tints of Then, revolves around the purchase, installation, and feeding of a giant wood-burning furnace to heat the buildings on the Woiwodes' farm during the record snow and cold of the winter months. Feeding the furnace and keeping it running become a life-or-death obsession for Woiwode, and this struggle in turn becomes both a central metaphor for exploring the sources of his craft as a writer and a means of joining the disparate threads of his boyhood and family life. Act Two, Then with Tints of Snow, recounts, in a more chronological fashion, his university and early New York days, the beginning of his writing career, his friendship with the young Robert DeNiro, and the pivotal mentoring role played by William Maxwell of The New Yorker.

What I Think I Did is replete with moments of startling beauty, sly humor, and heartbreaking tenderness. More than almost any other writer Larry Woiwode has the capacity to astound with his words, and in this memoir he is at the top of his form.

3 out of 5 stars Thoughtful memoir of life with a great star.......2004-07-26

This is the one book to read if you're interested in what Robert de Niro was like in his early days, before he had made any movies and was just a good-looking, cocky kid in New York, the son of two artists (Robert De Niro Sr and Virginia Admiral) who, as Woiwode points out, deserved to be far better known. Nineteen when Woiwode encounters him in a drama about disabled folk, the blind, De Niro eventually becomes one of Woiwode's very closest friends. One dramatic episode details the renting of a U-Haul to meet De Niro Senior at the docks, where, after some time in France, he has arrived with a cabinful of oil paintings, some of them comically oversized.

Woiwode also spends some time detailing the genesis of his own writing career. He seems to have been the golden boy at Urbana, then in New York the urbane and married William Maxwell took him in under his wing and made sure his stories were published in THE NEW YORKER and that his first novel was picked up by FARRAR STRAUS & GIROUX. Every boy should have a good pal like De Niro and a good older gentleman friend like Maxwell--and the talent, of course, to back it up.

Woiwode must be overstating things when. among the list of the other famous writers Maxwell worked with, he includes Frank O'Hara. Could he be mixing him up with John O'Hara here? Many do who haven't read either.

                              4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2002-06-06

While I was reading this book I began to think about Henry Miller's Tropic Of Cancer. Although written in prose, Miller's piece is a fantastic poem nearly all the way through. Woiwode's book comes close at parts. You can tell this was written by a true writer.

At times he becomes too embroiled in givng us every detail (such as about how to fix a furnace), but at other times his writing is true insight into the complex facade and machinery that make up the fabric of human awareness. The ending of the book is wonderful: memories bending and folding out of each other . And (for a writer like me) his story's excitement of becoming a contract writer at The New Yorker, is stimulating and inspirational.

A great book. I'm going to buy What I'm Going To Do, I Think right now!

                              4 out of 5 stars Refreshing!.......2001-05-30

This was my first exposure to Larry Woiwode. At first, I was leery, his prose seemed so grand. It required time on my part, as this was not a book that could be read superficially.

But instead of drifting away from it as happens so often for me when real work is required, I was drawn in. I was captivated by the his ability to convey the raw, honest love he has for his children. I was compelled by the ongoing battle he has with the new furnace. And the flashbacks served to enrich rather than distract me. The book left me filled with image and emotion. I understand that this may be a memoir in trilogy. I eagerly await further installments.

                              2 out of 5 stars disappointment.......2001-01-04

This book was one of the bitterest disappointments of my reading career-After giving us one of the best depictions of the interior life in his diptych,Beyond the Bedroom Wall and Born Brothers,he's has gone further downhill with each book. What makes it even more painful is that the first 2/3 of What I Think I Did are as beautifully written as the stars can be on a clear night in North Dakota, only to have the last third thrown together in a shockingly slapdash and hack manner-I don't get it. But I had a foretaste of disappointment when I saw how overpraised the book was on the back jacket blurbs. I hope he redeems himself with the "Christian novel" he said he was going to write in Acts...

1 out of 5 stars How I Wish You Didn't.......2000-12-06

Many years ago I read What I'm Going To Do, I Think.I remember thinking at the time: " What a wonderful writer. What a depressing book." Mr. Woiwode's current effort, which I read after reading a glowing review, seemed like words strung together and thrown at the page in order to meet a deadline and/or pay bills. It was reminiscent of the old saw about Oakland. I kept wondering why such an intelligent guy would place himself and his family in harms way in such a godforsaken climate when a person of such obvious talent and connections has almost any location in the world available to him as a place to live. I couldn't keep from wondering if the son's shooting accident was really an accident. If anybody wants this book, I'd be glad to give you mine.
