Book Description

Hailed as an indispensable resource (Booklist), this guide to business success on foreign ground features the latest facts and figures, including the changes in trade status with China and Vietnam

Free trade is thriving worldwide--which means good business for American businesses. But when Americans recoil at kisses on the cheek from a Brazilian or invite an Egyptian to lunch during the month of Ramadan, they face an undeniable fact: successful trade abroad demands a firm grasp of not only economic, but political and social forces. Thoroughly revised and updated, this guide gives global deal-makers the insights to avoid cultural gaffes and forge strong alliances.

Here are candid snapshots of the USA's top trading partners, including an all-new chapter on Vietnam. Whether their target country is China (including Hong Kong), Germany, or Mexico, readers will get the lowdown on business prospects, including population growth, age breakdown, per capita income, marketing regulations, and overall risk rating. They'll also learn crucial cultural factors, including negotiating style, sanctioned topics of conversation, perceptions of time and punctuality, holidays, and standard work hours. And from business travelers who've been there, they'll get telling notes on dressing and behaving for success, plus notorious faux paus.

Complete with passport and visa requirements, samples of key documents, and helpful websites, DUN & BRADSTREET'S GUIDE TO DOING BUSINESS AROUND THE WORLD holds the keys to international trading with skill and confidence.

2 out of 5 stars Not up to the authors' prior standard.......2002-03-01

When I saw the authors were the authors of "Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands" I immediately bought this book. It was disappointing, because the authors have shown they can write good books.

The biggest problem is with keeping current. (The authors allude to this issue in their preface.) This book was based on 1999 material and published in 2001. There's a lot of material that has very limited shelf-life, such as a list of government officials in Italy. They publish a list of national holidays for each country, listing both date and day of the week. (Where was their editor?) Obviously that information is only good for one particular year.

Treatment is superficial in many aspects. Under "currency" they only state the name of the currency, with no reference to pegging or exchange rate volatility. Under "Intellectual Property Rights" they discuss the treaties the country has signed. You would never learn there is an intellectual property issue in China from reading this book, because China has signed all pertinent treaties.

Their treatment of cultural issues is not structured. They list five cultural tips per country. These tend to focus on manners issues such as being (or not being) on time. I'm more attune to the method that Geert Hofstede uses in his books where he defines a cultural trait, discusses its implications, and then states how strong that cultural trait is in the country. For example, Hofstede introduces "power distance" as a measure of hierarchy and respect for authority. He then discusses implications for the decision making and negotiation processes. Finally, he gives the scores for each country, leaving the reader to draw conclusions. The authors of this book do discuss one cultural trait for all countries, defined as "Time." To them it means attitudes toward promptness. There is no discussion of the inverse relationship between attention to promptness and flexibility in scheduling, which is a hugely important issue in buying or selling.

Finally, and this is a personal issue because I am a purchasing consultant and educator, there is a heavy emphasis on selling in other countries but almost no attention to buying there. They could have given GSP-status for imports into the US, for example.

I recommend spending your money elswhere. Buy "Kiss, Bow" to learn about manners issues. Get "Culturegrams" to get annually updated information on history and geography. If you really want to study a country it will take more depth and more current material than this book carries.

5 out of 5 stars An Incomparable Source of Information and Commentary.......2000-11-16

Here is the best single-source I have come across thus far which provides information about trade opportunities, tariffs, risk factors, negotiating styles, investment climate, protocol, and cultural tips. (I refer to the revised and expanded version.) The authors discuss 40 countries (in alphabetical order, from Argentina to Venezuela), then provide five appendices: Contracts and Websites, Documents Used in International Trade, Abbreviations of International Organizations, Corruption & Bribery Index, and Conversion Factors. I am now convinced that almost every company throughout the world will eventually become involved, directly or indirectly, with e-business. Here is a comprehensive guide which contains invaluable information and hard-headed recommendations based on real-world experience. Other volumes are now available which provide more information about a single county (eg Stuttard's superb The New Silk Road whose subject is China) but none, to my knowledge, which is comparable in terms of global coverage.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for U. S. exporters of all sizes........1998-09-24

This book provides valuable information on the social, political, economic and marketing aspects of the 40 major trading partners (countries) of the United States. It rates the credit worthiness of each country based upon its trade and monetary policies, climate for foreign investment, import duties and taxes, political climate, and attitude towards protection of intellectual property rights. It does an excellent job of addressing the cultural aspects of doing business abroad. Our staff uses it often as a resource for conducting international market research and working with consulting clients. Recommended for purchase by John R. Jagoe, Director, Export Institute

5 out of 5 stars A very in depth look at Cross Cultural Marketing.......2002-11-01

I have found this book to be very helpful in my research of Cross-Cultural Marketing. It is laid out in a logical order, and as it progresses it looks at every aspect in fine detail. The book is filled with both general knowledge and covers a variety of basic business aspects as well as giving many examples of good and bad marketing. I found many of the examples very amusing, and would leave a normal person wondering why would a large business employ such bad strategy as not to take local culture into account. This book gives ideas on different countries; western europe, eastern europe, Japan, India, and many different Asian countries. It is less developed for African marketing, while it does have some examples, it is also a less developed economy than the others.
Regardless if you are a student or a business person I think this book would be a great resource when studing marketing abroad. It has so many examples of the blunders and the sucesses.

Canals. Railroads. Automobiles. Computers. The Internet. Each represented revolutionary shifts in the way Americans would live and do business. Each saw a corresponding rush of investors to get in on this great new investment opportunity. Each saw a lot of investors go broke. In The Internet Bubble, Anthony Perkins and Michael Perkins, founding editors of The Red Herring, look at it this way: In the early 20th century, there were more than 500 automobile companies in the U.S. Now how many are there? Same with the new Internet companies, the Perkinses predict. A few will grow into profitable businesses in 10 or 20 years, but even then, their stocks may not be worth much more than their 1999 prices. They argue that buying an Internet stock today is really nothing more than gambling that someone else will come along and buy it from you for more money.

The book includes an overview of the biggest players in the Internet explosion, the market mania for Internet stocks, and profiles of companies such as Amazon.com, Yahoo! and At Home. The authors also interview venture capitalists who help new companies get off the ground and the investment bankers who help them go public. And while they don't pretend that they know when the Internet bubble will burst, or what the damage will be, they are convinced that most .com companies will never make a dime. The book concludes with some thoughts about investing in this climate, and argues that ignoring the Internet may be as dangerous to your portfolio as investing too much. Some guidelines about product cycles and diversification appear, but the biggest rule seems to be: Don't be the one holding the hot potato at the end of the game. --Lou Schuler

        Book Description

The spectacular Bull Market in high-tech stocks is the investment story of the decade.

The numbers are astonishing. The Internet boom has created new household names such as Yahoo, Amazon, and America Online -- companies that today command billions in market value. Internet startups like Healtheon and eBay have seen their stocks sky-rocket over 3000 percent since their IPOs, and dozens of other Internet stocks have doubled, tripled, and even quadrupled on their first day of trading.

        Here is a market where:

        entrepreneurs like the thirty-something founders of Yahoo and Amazon become global billionaires overnight;

        money-losing startups command market valuations that make the captains of traditional industry cry their hearts out and tremble with competitive fear;

and venture capitalists and investment bankers cash in big on companies barely out of the cradle.

But individual retail investors -- the outsiders in this turn of the century roulette game -- are left to foot the bill, paying exorbitant prices for stocks that will end up diving off a cliff.

TheInternet Bubble is the story of the turbulent world ofhigh-tech stocks, a place where fortunes aremade and lost in a day. This book uncovers the innerworkingsof an industry that increasingly thrives ongreed and hype. It shows who is really getting rich, and how they use small investors to finance their empires.

Silicon Valley insiders Anthony and Michael Perkins provide a behind-the-scenes look at the forces -- and the people -- stoking the money engine in the technology stock market. They show how the allure of fast-paced innovation and overnight success has driven an ongoing market frenzy around Internetstocks, creating what they call an "Internet Bubble." Most important, the authors show that, when the Bubble inevitably bursts, Main Street -- not Wall Street -- will take the big hit, unless individual investors take steps to protect themselves now.

This is a book that will make every investor in America think twice before chasing the latest "hot" Internet stock.

        4 out of 5 stars Review for a MBA/MSE Class.......2001-04-16

With the current shakeout of high tech stocks on both the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchanges, you would think a lot of people were losing money. But according to the authors of this book, the only people losing money are the ones who bought the stocks at overvalued prices. The ones who made money were the insiders and the people who sold before the downturn. These people or the general public that made money were able to find even greater "fools" willing to buy their stocks at those outrageous prices and who were subsequently left with millions in stock value losses. Also, the insiders have cashed out long before the current shakeout going on in the market place. So, the "moral" of the story is to be an insider so that you know what's going on inside the companies you own stock. "The Internet Bubble" focuses on these insiders, namely the venture capitalist (VCs). The authors also talk about the world of investment bankers. The book lists all the major players in the investment banker and venture capitalist world and gives a brief history about each. The authors also have a final note or epilogue to the reader in that you should sell your stocks as soon as possible. Their rational is that all the Internet companies would have to have enormous growth to justify their stock pricing. Of course anyone can say that is time to sell because the Internet bubble will burst, but no one knows when exactly it will burst. If we did, none of us would need to work! Just like today with stocks at a low, I can say that its time to buy because they will go back up eventually. Am I correct? Probably, but the question is when will they go back up? Again, if I knew, I wouldn't need to work! All in all, I did find this book helpful in understanding the world of "insider trading". I would not recommend it to people who already know about investment banking and ventures capitalists. The book is fairly easy to read even though I got confused with all the statistics that were used throughout the book. There is also a comic strip of Doonesbury before each chapter to offer comic relief. These strips mock the world of Internet investing. Even though they mock Internet investing, I find them to be generally true. Examples of this include taking a company public even though they will never show profits. Another comic has an Internet company going public without a robust product and "suckering" the public into buying the stock because they are an Internet company.

5 out of 5 stars this book scared the c**p out of me.......2001-02-11

As a "dot-com" kid I suddenly found it was the new millenium and I had a ton of money to blow. I read this book and the math was so dead-on I knew it was correct. But who could guess when the bubble would burst? Starting in March, 2000 it clearly started to burst but everytime there was a "dead cat bounce" I would go out and buy a million bucks worth of stocks only to watch that million turn to zip when the market fell further. This book is a great book, not from an historical perspective, but from an investment perspective. The fundamentals they talk about to analyze the bubble are useful now in determining which tech companies out there right now might have real value.

4 out of 5 stars Good, gutsy book.......2000-04-04

Criticisms first: This book was a) somewhat clunky to read, more like a schema for a book than a book itself; b) somewhat thin; c) a little repetitive; and d) had a title only a glossator could love.

Now ... plaudits: The ever-contrarian freres Perkins are biting the hand that feeds them -- and it apparently tastes good. After years of being the house pet of venture capital firms up and down the West Coast, the last year has seen Red Herring toughen up somewhat. They don't just parrot vapid management and VC claims -- they analyze them, scoff at them, and generally do things that the trade press isn't supposed to do with full-page buyers of glossy ads.

This book continues the tradition, with muscular prose that amounts to chest shots at Kleiner Perkins (it overstates the jobs it has created; it helped fuel the current irresponsible bubble; and uber-investor John Doerr's radar regularly locks in on bogies).

This was good, tough journalism. While it may just be a coincidence, but I have found it heartily refreshing to see this book out, followed by Fortune's recent cover piece on dot-com financial machinations, and the Forbes expose on MicroStrategy.

        Redemptive and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars excellent book, easy read.......2000-03-29

this book was a fabulous read. I especially enjoyed the Dilbert cartoons at the front of each chapter. Does anyone know where to get these photos. My book is at home and I want to download them from my computer. I checked Dilbert site and nothing. A must read for a reality check into these markets.

            Book Description

In Values, Nature, and Culture in the American Corporation, distinguished ethicist William Frederick explores issues of fundamental importance to all who aspire to conduct their business affairs ethically. He begins with an examination of the three value systems in business that are basically incompatible, and therefore in constant tension. The first is the need for managers to efficiently allocate resources for maximum profits. The second is the natural tendency for managers, in pursuit of the first goal, to accumulate power for its own sake. The third is the desire for people in the community to create relationships that will perpetuate these communities. Frederick brings in a range of ideas and concepts from the social sciences as well as the natural sciences to illuminate his discussion. In the final section of the book he explores a range of issues of current concern to managers, including corporate culture and technology.

1 out of 5 stars A valiant attempt to use sociobiology to analyze business.......1999-08-03

The author has attempted to use concepts from sociobiology to provide a way to evaluate business ethics and practice. It is badly flawed because he does not understand some of the basic sociobiological principles he needs to accomplish his goal.

5 out of 5 stars An Important Book.......1999-07-26

Don't be put off by the title, the bland cover, or that it's part of a series in business ethics. This is a terrific and provocative book! Frederick offers a compelling framework for understanding the conflicts among the values centered on the essential economizing function of business; ecology; and the inherent power-aggrandizement of the corporation. The thesis presented here challanges both anti-business environmental elites as well as corporate apologists.

Why do so many otherwise rational individuals make irrational decisions when it comes to money? Financial journalist Gary Belsky and Cornell University psychology professor Thomas Gilovich contend the answers can be found--and the deficiencies remedied--with help from a relatively new science called behavioral economics. Still largely unknown outside academic circles, the field can be traced to research on the impact of rewards and punishments on human judgment and decision- making that first were undertaken at Jerusalem's Hebrew University some 30 years ago. In Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes , Belsky and Gilovich update this pioneering work and show readers how to understand exactly why they invest, spend, and save as they do. More importantly, using examples that everyone can identify with and language that anyone can understand, the authors offer dozens of workable suggestions that can help readers manage their money better. "We believe that by identifying the psychological causes behind many types of financial decisions," they write, "you can effectively change your behavior in ways that will ultimately put more money in your pocket and help you keep more of what you already have." --Howard Rothman

                  Book Description

Why do so many otherwise smart people make foolish financial choices? Why do investors sell stocks just before they skyrocket -- and cling to others as they plummer? Why do shoppers overspend when using credit cards rather than cash? What do our habits of tipping or buying lottery tickets indicate about our relationship with money?

In this fascinating investigation of the ways we spend, invest, save, borrow, and waste money, Gary Belsky and Thomas Gilovich reveal the psychological causes -- the patterns of thinking and decision making -- of irrational behavior. Most important, they focus on the decisions we make every day and, using entertaining examples, provide invaluable tips on avoiding the financial faux pas that can cost thousands of dollars each year.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Behavioral Finance.......2007-07-21

For more than 20 years I have been fascinated why so many people make financial decisions which defy rationality. Unfortunately, I find it extremely difficult to read and comprehend most of the research papers that has been done in the field of behavioral finance. The last 5 years have seen several good books explaining the results of the emerging field of behavioral finance. This book is one of those good books.

As a fan of index funds, I enjoyed reading this book's explanation and recommendation for suggesting index funds.

This book is very readable and is an excellent primer on the major concepts which are emerging from behavioral finance research.

Socrates was right when he uttered his famous quote "Know Thy Self". One of the hardest things to do is to understand why we do what we do sometimes. This book helps explain some of this natural human behavior, and how we can manage it to make more rational financial decisions.

I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including:

The book is easy to read and it also covers a lot of interesting topics. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite personal finance books.......2007-05-15

It's been years since I first read this book, but I still reference it often when talking about money decisions. It's readable, fun, and informative. I also enjoy the situational questions that begin each chapter. Even when you can see what point they're getting it, it's easy to see yourself making the same mistake in a moment of decision.

5 out of 5 stars Out of the ivory tower and into your real life.......2007-01-09

this book is an easy well-written guide to understanding the academic field of behavioral economics and to bring it into the real world of our lives. The original research studies are really dry and hard to read even for a psychologist (I am one).....this is reader friendly and practical. Helped me understand some of the errors I made and still fall into....like noticing the stocks I have really done well with and forgetting about the ones that did not do so well so I think I have done really well in the market the past year..but then I look at the cold hard numbers and guess what? I did not do nearly as well I thought. Very helpful to use with patients who are having credit card woes (future dollars are so cheap). Dr. Mary Gresham Atlanta Ga

4 out of 5 stars Are you mentally fit to make money decisions?.......2006-12-21

This book helps to show you some of the common pitfalls that people make when making decisions involving money. While there are topics related to investing, there are also general "money-decision" topics. There were actually some mistakes that I did not even think of but when I read them I realized that many of my friends made these mistakes. For me the biggest lesson that I learned was the part about mental accounting. This is one of those books that you think is all common sense but when you think about it, you realize that you too make these mistakes.

This collection of papers concerning behavioural finance, is a very helpfull item for any PhD or reasearch student that works on this subject. Although it does not contain material of the basics of behavioural finance, it has some good papers on issues such as volatility of the markets, noice trading etc.

4 out of 5 stars Too academically oriented for average investor.......2002-01-02

I was looking forward to learning about new theories in Behavioral Finance, but was a little disappointed by this book. The 21 articles each examine a discrepancy in a free market situation and develop theories for explaining the discrepancy drawing upon the behavioral finance field. I have an MBA and have been an investor for more than 20 years. There are too many statistics and academic language to be an efficient book for me. I quickly switched to finding each of the 21 questions, then skipping to the summary to find the behavioral finance theory for the discrepancy. I did enjoy the credit card high interest rate explanation and consider this explanation alone worth the price of the book. I also enjoyed the closed end fund discount price explanation also very useful. Book is ok, but 90% of the material can be skipped unless you are a finance professor who enjoys the academic orientation and detail.

                              Book Description

What allows an experienced accountant or financial statement user to perform certain tasks more effectively than the inexperienced individual? This book addresses the question, as well as others that arise from human information processing issues. In the mid-1980s, much of behavioral decision-making research in accounting dramatically changed direction and began to explore the effects of attributes of accounting decision settings that distinguish them from those commonly examined by psychologists. This book, which presents and analyzes the newest developments in behavioral research in auditing, is an essential contribution to the field.

                                  Book Description

The relatively new field of behavioral accounting relies on the application of behavioral concepts from the social sciences for an understanding of the forces that underlie the accounting environment. Here, Belkaoui presents the first comprehensive survey of behavioral accounting theories and findings, organizing them into a systematic framework for the further study of behavioral accounting issues and questions. The result is a new understanding of the behavioral environment of accounting and a guide to solving practical behavioral problems that result from the preparation and use of accounting information. As Belkaoui demonstrates, the quality of accounting information is often adversely affected by human perceptions, attitudes, predispositions, and other behavioral characteristics. Belkaoui fully explores the behavioral underpinnings of the problem by examining the behavioral dimensions of a wide range of accounting issues and practices including: contingency approaches to the design of accounting systems; functional and data fixation; the practice of slack; accounting and language; goal setting, participative budgeting and performance; the human resource considerations in public accounting firms; and, finally, cultural determinism in accounting. By offering both a realistic appraisal of the theories behind behavioral accounting and a cogent statement of the questions still left unanswered, Belkaoui makes a major contribution to the ongoing inquiry into the influence of behavioral factors on accounting practice.
