Excellent Guide to the Corporate Bond Market..........2000-06-20
This book is an excellent resource, not only to keep on the desk, but also as concise reading. The analytics of the corporate bond market were covered very well.
One area that could be more detailed was the portfolio management section (Section 13). However the book was still very worth while.
I would especially recommend this book to those trying to get a good understanding of the corporate bond market in lieu of a textbook or larger scale fixed income guide.

For those who want to control their portfolio.......2007-03-23
I've always thought that the difference between a "How to" book and a textbook was that the "How to" book was more often the easier book to digest. Not so in this case. This book takes on Portfolio Management like a tiger tearing into raw meat.
If you love with manipulating your financial funds to the degree that you have a stock ticker on your PC at all times, then by God, this is the book for you! This book drives down into the statistical analysis of why the popular methodologies work and then - without any ado - provides you with a straight forward, no frills equation for calculating the method yourself. I was impressed with that part of the book the most. A straight answer is usually the one thing that textbooks lack.
If you're looking for pictures and 1,2,3's for a DIY environment, then this book isn't it. Given the volume and depth of information presented, I'd be tempted to categorize this as a textbook. If you are serious about managing your portfolio, then this is the textbook you're looking for.
Knowledge breeds power.......2004-02-12
If you don't know the difference between a Savings GIC or CD and a balanced fund then this book is definitely not for you. Written to an audience of more savvy investors, DIY is designed to help experienced investors make the transition from a professionally managed portfolio to a self managed, successful investment future. DIY- Do it Yourself or Direct Invest Yourself is not for the faint of heart.
Knowledge breeds power and this book will help empower the DIY investor; filled with strategies designed to help the reader develop creative investment principles in a disciplined, intelligent manner. The book is written in three parts: Background, Trend Regression Portfolio Strategy and Portfolio Management Issues. Topics covered include: Market Timing, Stock Picking, Trading History and Risk and Reward, just to name a few. Investors are shown how to access and use MS Excel portfolio tracking spreadsheets to produce a comprehensive portfolio workbook. Sample graphs, models and illustrations are explained in detail. Many references and quotes from Robert F. Drach's, High return Low Risk Investment as well as the Drach weekly newsletter are included throughout the book.
Author, Lyle Wilkinson is Canadian earning his BBA and MBA in Hawaii where he now lives. In 1999, he began researching a disciplined, mechanical system's approach to the stock market. The result of that research is DIY-Portfolio Management.
Considering taking your portfolio into your own hands? This book is an excellent learning tool and a practical, comprehensive guide for remodeling your financial future.

Great book for technically oriented stock analysis.......2004-01-09
It should be no surprise to anyone these days that over time money funds tend to track the stock indexes. Some do better, some worse, but over time they tend to track the average. So, how do you do better than average? How do you beat the indexes? Lyle Wilkinson proposes that the answer is really fairly simple. If the stocks tend to track toward a mean then trends can be examined to see where a stock is located on its mean. This fancy term for this is trend regression analysis. In his book "DIY Portfolio Management" Mr. Wilkinson provides a great explanation of trend regression analysis - what it is, what it is not, why it makes sense, and how to do it. For those who like statistics he builds the complete formulas and rationale, for those who don't he points out that many services provide trend analysis on their sites. You don't have to calculate the trend regression but you do need to understand what it is and how it works if you want to use it. This book shows how to use the information to pick a stock that is likely to rise or fall. However, this is not the only analysis in the book. He includes information on TRiPS, market timing, risk analysis, cycles, and even an action plan. "DIY Portfolio Management" takes a very technical subject and makes it available to the layman. Lyle Wilkinson's excellent and thorough job of explaining trend regression analysis and its use in the stock market is the primary reason "DIY Portfolio Management" is a highly recommended read for the technical investor looking to take control of his investments.

Customer Reviews:
well written, great read!.......2005-08-10
Dr. Paul Lorenc provides an insiders look not only into surgery but plastic surgery specifically. This book is well written with tactful humor, real cases and is awash in insightful tips for those of us seeking to improve our aging bodies. This book helps you understand why surgery is dangerous business and how to avoid the pratfalls of misguided rhetorical advertising.
Happy Consumer.......2005-06-10
At age 50, I finally got permission from On High to act: My special-order bras were 34 KK; without them, I could roll my breastfeeding-bedraggled bosom up on a pencil and tack 'em to my chin with a pin. Hyperbole? Not the 34-KK part...
To my physician-husband Jon: "I'm getting rid of these things!" He protested, "Why? I like 'em." If I could have taught school with drooping appendages like the braless teacher on South Park, it would have been less painful, but I'd have been an unemployable laughingstock.
The University-of-California-faculty physicians explained to us, "We'll have to remove the breast tissue, replace it with silicone which will harden after a couple of years, slice off your nipples and sew them back on. They'll have no feeling, and later may fall off." Horrified, Jon insisted on a second opinion.
Z. Paul Lorenc seemed shocked when we repeated what the other doctors had said: "What WE do is leave enough tissue to fill the cup size you want, pull the nipple up through the front with the blood and nerve lines attached and sew it into the circular hole I'll fashion in the front. What he DIDN'T tell me was *clicking heels* I'd never have to wear a bra again!
In person, Z. Paul and his dermatologist twin Marek balance modesty with a refreshing sense of humor. If Z. Paul is righteously proud of his work, it's because he's an artist. After he re-crested my albatross chest, I decided: Facelift Time in the West! He insists in A Little Work that he's better now than he was then. I don't see how! Folks still can't believe I'm 65. Jon loves the book too. He says that Z Paul is an excellent physician, but he's a sculptor first.
good information.......2005-05-03
`A Day in the Life', or `Taking the Plunge', to name a few, are chapters in the book, A Little Work; Behind the doors of a Park Avenue Plastic Surgeon. Both of these chapters, in particular, are useful for people who are considering plastic surgery, as well as pre-med students. The author, Paul Lorenc did a fine job at focusing on how plastic surgery and its industry work, along with how each surgical procedure is performed through his clear and concise writing.
Lorenc handled the topics in his book very well, and discussed each issue completely. He has the capability and knowledge of accomplishing this through his education, experience, and expertise. For example, Lorenc took the reader through a day in his life. He started from when he woke up and walked to work, through dinner with his wife. He began his day with walking to the office and doing going through his patient's actual exams and visits. He also used several different examples of procedures, and explained how they work, along with what to expect when receiving them, from the initial visit through the recovery, in his chapter, `Taking the Plunge.'
Overall, the book is very thorough when it comes to the topic in general of becoming a plastic surgeon, having plastic surgery, and knowledge about specific plastic surgeries. It is very important for a doctor to be aware of these three main topics because they deal with these specific topics on a daily basis. Doctors need to have knowledge of plastic surgery in order to gain trust from their patients. Everyone wants to be able to trust a doctor's opinions as well as what he is doing.
If you are looking for a book to give you information on becoming a doctor, as well as, different surgical procedures and the technology advancements that come along with being one, then this is the book for you. It will give you a sufficient amount of information on what it takes to be a plastic surgeon or have plastic surgery.
A Best Seller!!.......2004-12-03
This has given me a wonderful outlook on having plastic surgery oneday soon. It was a easy read and at times I could not put it down. After reading it, I enjoyed it so much I started to read it again! Dr Lorenc sounds like a doctor I want to use for all of my illnesses.
a little dissapointing.......2004-11-13
I just finished reading this book and despite its recent media attention, I have to say that I was quite dissapointed. While entertaining, this books fails to offer practical information and the information the authors do share is not very sophisticated. For pure enjoyment, this book is OK. If it is practical information you are in search of, this book is not for you. No pictures are offered and the authors recommendations are vague. I much prefered Secrets of a Beverly Hills Cosmetic Surgeon by Dr. Robert Kotler. I highly reccomend his book for those interested in practical information on cosmetic surgery.

A Compelling & Helpful Book.......2006-02-15
THE WOMAN BEHIND THE MASK(correct title on cover) is a compelling, wonderful read! Author Jan Coleman reveals her own story and models transparent sharing. Not easy to do. She obviously cares about her readers. Her book flows with incredible liberating insights. She stresses authentic living as a must in order to find wholeness. Her use of true anecdotes about herself and other women kept me turning pages. Throughout the book Coleman offers Scriptural truths, key quotes and guidance that make a strong impact. She gives practical ways for a woman to let God help her remove her mask. This is an excellent book for women's study groups. It includes motivating questions at the end of each chapter.

Product Description
An essential book for anyone interested in understanding London houses. Much has been written about Georgian London and its street architecture but far less about the arrangements for everyday life behind the street façades. Sir John Summerson's Georgian London of 1945 identified a standard type of house plan in the Metropolis but since then scholars have unearthed a much more diverse picture. This book, by two leading experts, has an informative introduction and uses specially drawn plans and accompanying photographs to chart the wide range of London's street architecture in the long Georgian period. The studies range from the small but respectable one-room houses of the East End (now almost all demolished as slums), to the more comfortable and familiar arrangements of the grander houses in the West End.

Book Description
Magali Larson's comprehensive study explores how architecture "happens" and what has become of the profession in the postmodern era. Drawing from extensive interviews with pivotal architects--from Philip Johnson, who was among the first to introduce European modernism to America, to Peter Eisenman, identified with a new "deconstructionist" style--she analyzes the complex tensions that exist between economic interest, professional status, and architectural product. She investigates the symbolic awards and recognition accorded by prestigious journals and panels, exposing the inner workings of a profession in a precarious social position. Larson captures the struggles around status, place, and power as architects seek to redefine their very purpose in contemporary America.
The author's novel approach in synthesizing sociological research and theory proposes nothing less than a new cultural history of architecture. This is a ground-breaking contribution to the study of culture and the sociology of knowledge, as well as to architectural and urban history.
Customer Reviews:
Inward-Looking.......2003-06-20
The important thing to know is that the book is about changes in architecture as a profession, and in how architects view their work, not about changes in what buildings look like or how buildings function. If your interest is in why the big shiny towers in your city are so big and shiny, the most relevant chapter is "The Autonomous Transformation," which covers how design awards are given. It's a solidly researched book, but much is aimed at an inward-looking, specialized audience.

Beautiful!.......2000-06-18
The artwork in this book is absolutely beautiful. Although not a very long book, the layout shows true artistic taste. There is a detailed drawing of each facade that opens up to show the building's interior. These drawings are complimented with photographs of the buildings and their contents. The book focuses on St. Peter's, Buckingham Palace, the Paris Opera, Neuschwanstein (castle), and Monticello. I particularly enjoyed the sections on the Opera and on Monticello. There were so many interesting little facts!

Recent events in the high-tech sector have shown that being bigger in the professional consulting arena does not always mean you are better.
Big budget PR programs can disguise questionable competency levels and without guidance, clients can suffer unnecessarily. Before engaging one, it is wise to know something about how consultants operate and then follow a prescribed selection process. Consultants, even the most prestigious large firms, are not omnipotent and all knowing. They share the market with larger and smaller competitors some of which are more or less capable, efficient, scrupulous and profitable.
Consultants are not omniscient. The wisest among them know knowledge and innovation has many sources, converges from all directions and does not flow solely from any single individual or from within the walls of any single organization. It follows then, that the consultant should not be relied upon as the sole source of enlightenment. To be of true value, he must constantly seek knowledge, absorb it like a sponge and employ it as beneficially as possible, with his best effort, for the interests of his client.

In the entire history of American taxes, only a handful of people have ever expressed a preference for paying them. Everyone else feels taxes should be paid by people other than him- or herself and an immediate circle of friends. Another point of near-universal agreement is that the tax code is far too complex, and that creating and enforcing it places the government in a crucial role in our day-to-day lives--a position that makes many taxpayers uncomfortable.
In The U.S. Income Tax, Michael Graetz presents the essential issues of taxation in fascinating ways, telling the stories of the real people who changed things, and about the ways these changes have improved the system or (more often) simply made it more complicated. For example, in a chapter on the tax code's "marriage penalty" (married couples with similar incomes pay more in taxes than they would if each were single), he shows that it's mathematically impossible to please everyone. Either singles pay more, or married couples pay more, but there's no way under a progressive tax system to make it entirely equitable.
There's no such problem under a flat income tax, but Graetz isn't a big fan of it. Instead, he sides with those who believe we should substitute a consumption tax for part of our current income tax. (Those making over $75,000 would also pay some sort of income tax in the example he shows.) He argues forcefully that this system--which includes adjustments to Social Security--would be more fair to Americans, and substantially increase our national savings rate. It lets everyone in on the action of the dynamic American economy, and, most important to a lot of Americans, keeps government on the sidelines. --Lou Schuler
Book Description
How to make sense of the American tax mess (and the cures that are supposed to fix it), with a new afterword for the paperback edition (originally titled The Decline (and Fall?) of the Income Tax). Dissatisfaction with the income tax has grown so high that attacks on it, and proposals to reform (or even abolish) it, now amount to an almost constant dull roar. How has it happened that ordinary Americans have come to regard the federal income tax as unfair and tax protesters as heroes? Trenchant and timely, this book locates the answers in both the substance of the Internal Revenue Code and the political process that created and feeds this monstrous law. Michael J. Graetz shows plainly how the income tax has become a political football; how government has allowed its complexities to grow with no thought of their impact on taxpayers; and, most of all, how PAC funds and special interests have affected Congress's will to reform the system. Graetz also looks closely at the various flat-tax and consumption-tax proposals and shows why they are not as fair or simple as their advocates claim. With colorful anecdotes to explain his argument, Graetz points the way to tax reforms that really are simple, sensible, and fair. The U.S. Income Tax is a book for everyone concerned with where our tax dollars go and what we get for them.
Customer Reviews:
Good intorduction to U.S. tax policy.......2001-12-04
The U.S. Income Tax is a great way to introduce yourself to tax policy in the united states. It does a great job at showing the issues of why the system must be reformed. Also it show how political tax reform gets inside congress, and how this causes reform to stall. In the end it shows several diffrent, and inovative, ideas for tax reform. One of the key strengths of this book is it takes a totally non-partisan look at tax reform. Something that is rather difficult to do.
The problems with this book come in being way to verbose. It could have easily been shortened.
