Book Description
Hardanger embroidery is a type of openwork originating in Norway. Its key characteristic is the kloster block formed by working groups of satin stitches; between the blocks, the fabric threads are cut and withdrawn to leave holes and bars of loose fabric threads that can then be embellished by needleweaving and the use of decorative stitches. This essential guide covers materials and equipment, perfecting the Hardanger basics, and a range of decorative stitches worked step-by-step including lace stitch fillings and wheel patterns.
Traditionally Hardanger motifs were worked white on white, however many of the featured designs explore how colour can be effectively introduced. There are charts for 36 border and motif designs and a range of project ideas show how these can be used to make attractive gifts or items for the home.
Book Description
Elegant hardanger embroidery—a technique refined in the early 18th century—is once again in fashion. And one look at the close-up photos in this lovely guide reveal why: the pulled threads in this lacy style of stitchery form beautiful patterns that are perfect on tablecloths, napkins, handkerchiefs, and other fine items. Needleworkers will find all the necessary information on these inspiring pages: how to create corner borders, count and pull threads, do various types of hemstitches, blend colored and white threads, and more. The projects range from pretty placemats and doilies to openwork curtains with a peahole stitch motif.
Book Description
Everything you need to know to master the beautiful craft of Hardanger embroidery: preparing the fabric, kinds of thread, blocking and removing thread correctly, kloster or satin stitch, working diagonally, much more. Instructions are followed by a series of "lessons" in which actual projects are made. 50 illustrations.

Another Look At Antique Hardanger.......2000-03-30
This is another fabulous Dover reprint of a much earlier issue. There are no graphs, but there are some directions and many very clear black and white pictures. Included are examples of different size tablecenters, tablecloths, and a gorgeous runner or scarf. The style of the work is complex and densely packed with stitching. The pieces are very attainable with careful attention to detail. Of the Dover reprints, I think this book has the most indepth instruction.
Antique Hardanger Patterns.......2000-03-29
This book is a wonderful reprint of earlier published material. There are no graphs, but the pictures are very clear and the Hardanger enthusiast with some experience can easily handle the patterns, which are typically more complex and densely decorated than the current trends in Hardanger. For anyone interested in a more European look in Hardanger, in antique patterns, and some stitches not commonly seen in most American publications, this book is a must have and a fabulous bargain at the price!

Great book for learning Hardanger.......2005-11-19

Not for beginners!.......2007-01-10
Instructions are unclear; you have to read them several times. Does not discuss needles, thread, sewing versus hoop stabbing, nor explain how to carry thread behind invisably so that your work looks good from both sides. The designs are nice and the explanations might be helpful for experienced hardanger stitchers.
Antique Hardanger Reprints.......2000-03-30
This is an excellant book for an adventurous novice and a delight for the advanced Hardanger enthusiast. There are no graphs but the pictures are clear and numerous, and there are some directions and close-up pictures of unusual motifs. The style of the work is unusual, densely rich and complex. For the advanced stitcher, a look at a different style of Hardanger and for the novice, an attainable goal to shoot for!
Older Hardanger Styles.......2000-03-29
This book is an excellent source of older style Hardange patterns. While there are no graphs, the pictures are clear enough that the Hardanger stitcher with some experience can easily handle the designs, which are typically more complex and more densely decorated than the current trends in Hrdanger. A must have for a Hardanger junkie!
This book was a little advanced for a beginner........1998-06-29
I absolutely loved the designs but they were way too advanced for a beginner like me. I would like to see step-by-step instructions or a few samplers included with the harder patterns.

How I learned Hardanger.......2005-11-24
This book is an absolute gem. This is actually my first Amazon review. I was so outraged by another posting, that I decided I needed to add my own.
For years, I had wanted to learn Hardanger, but not living close to a stitching shop and being somewhat intimidated by the beauty of the technique, I just admired the pieces in magazines.
The challenge with learning any stitching technique without a teacher is the need for precise, clear and well drawn instructions. I found all of this in this great book that I stumbled across at a local bookstore. So, if you have been dying to learn this technique, please pickup this book.
Other Hardanger recommendations include anyting by Janice Love & Linda Driskell. I discovered both of them after this book, and must haves include: Hardanger Basics & Beyond, Janice Love and Fundamentals Made Fancy, also by Janice.
Good luck on your Hardanger journey, and please don't listen to the purists who insist on not using colored fibers and fabrics. I love the look of Hardanger on white & ecru, but I firmly believe that fabrics & fibers should be chosen based on your own taste & the purpose of the piece.
BTW, I would also recommend finding a local stitching shop. I have a few that I frequent now and it's worth the long trips I take to get there. The patterns, fibers, and fabrics you will find as well as the great people you will meet are worth the time & effort. Also, please look into a local chapter of the Embroiders' Guild of America at www.egausa.org. Enjoy !
UnHardanger.......2002-03-25
This is a book for people who don't actually like hardanger. The patterns rely entirely on the use of coloured threads for their effect, so even if you substitute thread of a single colour for the rather gaudy colour combinations suggested, the designs look completely bland. There isn't any difference between these patterns and conventional cross stitch patterns except in the use of satin stitch--the lacy open spaces of traditional hardanger are scarcely in evidence. Look at Jill Carter's Hardanger Embroidery to see the real beauty of the form.
Excellent Introduction to Hardanger.......1999-04-03
I taught myself hardanger using this book alone. My first project is nearly completed and looks very nice. The first part of the book teaches each of the different stitches required to complete the projects in the book. There are many illustrations that clearly show each step of a new stitch and make it easy to learn. Once all of the stitches are taught, she moves into the projects. They are arranged in increasing order of difficulty and start with a small sampler and end with a christening gown. I highly reccomend this book for anyone who is interested in exporing hardanger embroidery.

Another Hit For A Talented Author And Marketer.......2005-07-09
Jeffrey Dobkin is an expert on marketing. That's not an opinion; it's a fact. Experts do; Dobkin does. Experts are recognized in trade publications; Dobkin is written up frequently.
The articles that this man has written for publications throughout the years could probably fill a small home. Suffice it to say that there are quite a few angry forests out there that have seen many a fallen tree be used to make the paper used to print the brilliance of Jeffrey Dobkin's marketing techniques.
This book is small but concise; easy to read but informative; inexpensive but preciously valuable.
I would have to go on to long to tell you all of the good that you will find in here, so instead I'll just tell you two things that you won't find in here: no cooking recipes and no tips on how to change your oil. Aside from those two things, Mr. Dobkin gives you everything you need to know to market your product or services effectively.
I couldn't reccomend this book higher.
Easy Reading, Great Marketing Ideas.......2001-11-13
I just finished reading this book, and I wholehartedly recomend it.
Step by step instructions on how to write your Press Release to be chosen by editors, information on where to send your Press Releases, a series of letters you can use to introduce your business to prospective clients, and more.
Worth every penny. (...)
Great, practical book concentrates on direct marketing.......1999-08-16
This is a concentrated book on direct marketing for businesses -- particularly the use of multi-sequence letter campaigns and PR releases. It is very appropriate for start ups -- as the costs of his techniques are relatively low.
The author is a practical businessman. And he's got great testimonials from readers. The one from E. Joseph Cossman follows: "Today I have over one-thousand business books in my library and if I had to get rid of every one, the only one I would save would be Jeffrey's book, "UNcommon Marketing Techniques."
Again, it's a practical book with low cost techniques for the budding entrepreneur. They also can be used by any business. I particularly liked his coverage of multi-step marketing and his coverage of what to do first on writing any sales letter or ad (hint: something powerful about objectives).
I also have his other book "How to Market a Product for under $500" and recommend it without hesitation. The author appears to be a low-cost, high results guy.
