Book Description
"Banking Sector Liberalization in India" explores in detail the changes in the Indian banking sector over the last 20 years, and puts them into a comparative perspective with the Chinese banking sector. For this purpose, the author develops a detailed indicator-based framework for assessing the liberalization of a banking sector along various process steps based on financial liberalization and transformation studies. This framework, along with the indicators for the process and the results of liberalization, is applied to the banking sectors in India and China to test for the effects of liberalization on the sector and the macro level. The key finding is that while liberalization has improved the sectoral performance, it has so far had no effect on the macro level. The book features a detailed description of recent reforms in the Indian banking sector, a set of indicators for evaluating banking sector reforms, and a large number of graphs with key figures for the banking sectors in India and China.

Book Description
China's prospects of successfully completing the transition to a market economy and becoming the world's largest economy during the 21st century depend on the future sustainability of high rates of economic growth.
This book is a comprehensive, balanced and realistic assessment of China's financial reform program and future direction. Covering not only the banking sector but also non-bank financial institutions, stock market development and external financial liberalization, the authors examine the impact of financial reform on economic development in China during the reform period. This volume will facilitate a more accurate assessment of the Chinese approach to financial reform, and will therefore, allow more informed future policy choices for both China and other developing and transitional countries.
Financial Reform and Economic Development in China contains a wealth of information for anyone concerned with China's economic future, and should be required reading for those in the corporate business sector, academics and government analysts.

Book Description
The People's Republic of China has completed the first decade of economic reform with remarkable achievements. At the same time, it is encountering severe economic problems in runaway inflation, crippling shortages, and large trade imbalances. This work uses a macroeconomic framework of development and financial repression theories to examine the PRC's performance. Improvements in the PRC's financial productivity, according to the author, can be achieved if Chinese leaders either (1) relax the real interest rate ceiling to discourage unproductive investment and free financial resources or (2) hasten the development of the equity market.

From the supplier: China began to embark on a gradual but far-reaching economic reform in 1978. Since then, the Chinese economy has been considerably modernized and opened up to the rest of the world. The reform process, which has been characterized not only by gradualism but also by pragmatism, focused on institutional development during its first decade of implementation. This emphasis has resulted in slow real market development. In the early 1990s, the reform process underwent a dramatic change when the Chinese Communist Party officially announced that a free market system was not incompatible with socialism. It introduced the concept of 'socialist market economy' in which market mechanism governs economic interactions but the public sector maintains ownership of the most important means of production.

Book Description
Money is important. Money is a catalyst. Money makes things happen.
Am I right? What is more powerful than money? Love? Food? Not a chance: With cash in hand, one can simply order out. For both.
I grew up in the 1980s, so I take the utmost pride in having lived in what I honestly believe to be the greatest decade of the twentieth century. Why? From the Police to Perestroika, the `80s had it all. It's obvious that as a generation, most of our feelings about money were formed at a time when Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, Michael Milken, and Yuppie culture reigned supreme.
Enter the `90s--and once again the stock market is booming. Now older, most of us have amassed some cash for the very first time. You want to get in on the action, but haven't got a clue where to start. More than anything, you are unique--the last thing you need is a middle-aged money manager telling you where to stow your stash.
So here's the deal: I'm twenty-three years old, obsessed with money and the stock market, a radio talk-show host, and a commodities trader. I've made money in everything from mutual funds to stocks--even options and futures. I've penned this little...shall we say, manifesto, for those of you out there who want something more out of life then two-for-one night at the Toss `n Sauce. Greed Is Good will tell you everything you need to know about the major financial "products" out there: from mutual funds to money markets, even the sexy stuff like options and futures.
Money is important, but I think this book makes an oftentimes dry subject a mite more palatable. I had to sit through the boring stuff, no reason you should too. Bottom line? This book is a practical but punchy ride through the money maze. And if I found my way out--so can you.
Amazon.com
Greed, in Jonathan Hoenig's estimation, is passion. It's lust. It has nothing to do with single-minded accumulation and everything to do with freedom, with the ability to pursue the things that make you happy. Hoenig received his first real introduction to greed while working at Starbucks as a teenager. He found that the money he earned after buying a few shares of Starbucks stock greatly exceeded what he made as an after-school wage slave. While in college, he started a radio show called Capitalist Pig, which now plays in 18 states. Greed has been good to Hoenig.
In Greed Is Good, he wants to share the wealth with his post-baby-boom generation by preaching the gospel of investing. But investing isn't just about choosing mutual fund A over mutual fund B. It's about not spending money on useless stuff, leaving more money for the things that are meaningful. Hoenig understands how frills like designer clothes, CDs, and, yes, Starbucks coffee can seem like necessities, when really they're lifestyle add-ons that can be eliminated. Doing without such excesses can be painful, but that's something else Hoenig believes in; not only is greed good, so is discipline, sacrifice, and self-denial. Greed is written in an eclectic style that includes Yiddish phrases, street slang, and generational cultural references ("Whatchu talkin' 'bout, Willis?"), which serves two purposes: it's very entertaining to read, and renders the often-dry message of "Save and invest" infinitely more palatable. --Lou Schuler
Customer Reviews:
Invest in the knowledge of a young Buffett.......2005-11-22
If you were born in the 80's and want to get into investing, then this book is for you. Mr. Hoenig brings life and funny irreverence to the very dry subject of investing that the "twenty-something" in all of us can appreciate. This book covers everything from basic saving to options and futures. The prose of this book is in everyday language and is easy to understand; any technical terms that are given are explained and/or defined in the running text or the margins. There are also definitions and cultural anecdotes, as well as a few Yiddish words (with definitions), throughout the chapters for your added enjoyment. Hoenig's underlying theme, though, is discipline. Know that Jonathan Hoenig is one of today's youngest master investors who runs his own hedge fund (Capitalistpig LLC). To actually witness his mind at work, tune in to Fox News on Saturday at 11:30 am. He is always a featured analyst on the show "Cashin' In."
Not worth your time.......2004-02-11
Somebody recommended this book to me. I read it. The idea is good however the author is far from understanding the principles of math (one would argue about understanding economics which is half social half science). There are many wrong calculations. I tried to contact Mr. Hoenig as I am from Chicago, too. Left several messages, sent e-mails with disagreement - no response.
I don't recommend the book. It's a waste of time.
Good Book.......2003-05-04
I'd be compelled to give this book 3 stars, but due to the comprehensive information on options on futures, I choice to give it four stars. This is a great book, but it's simple, conversational style can get annoying and there can be too much substance at times to follow (sidebars, quotes, etc.). This is a good book by an up-and-coming hedge fund manager (Jonathan Hoenig). While I don't know if it would be good for kids to read, it definitely is a great book for adults who are intermediately knowledgeable about the financial markets, as it explains terms and operations in a simple, easy to understand mannerism.
A Pig on Wall Street...No Less than a Bull in a China Shop.......2003-02-11
Jonathan Hoenig is a regular analyst on one of my favorite shows, "Cashin' In" on Fox News. Frankly, I like his style. From his no-nonsense attitude toward investment advice to telling a Wall Street elder that he doesn' "know preferred stock from livestock" right there on the television screen, Hoenig is truly the financial voice of the Me generation.
Long held to be the stodgy realm of pinstriped boomers, the world of investing is an important one for we Xers to get into, if for no other reason than Hoenig's central theme in this book: we have the time. We have a lot of time left in which to make our fortunes and take our place among the leaders of this world, and while this book isn't necessarily the roadmap (nor does it proclaim to be), it is most certainly the antithesis of all the rest of the investing books out there which are little more than cobranded, self-serving brochure-ware. Hoenig tackles investing from the 20-something point of view, puts it in the proper perspective, and gives us the tools we need, but tells us to do our own work. I applaud that approach. Plus, this book is one hell of a good read, even if you couldn't care less about making money (you know who you are too..).
My only hope is that I can get Hoenig to do an interview or column for my new GenX-themed website, because after reading this book and watching him on Fox, his opinion is one I truly value.
A lively introduction to investing on the stock market.......2002-12-27
I was looking for a book that would give an overview of the stock market and investing and I found it in this book. The title alone drew me to it. Johnathan Hoenig is the host and producer of "Capitalist Pig", the first radio program exclusively for the financial needs of 'Gen-Exers'. Hoenig has been investing in the stock market before he could drive and now holds a seat on the prestigious Chicago Board of Trade. In this book, he provides a lively intoduction stocks, bonds, mutual funds, futures, options, diversification strategies, order execution and other fundamental topics of investing. He encourages investors to take prudent risks and think ahead. Hoenig's philosophy is not just about being rich, but its also about taking control of our future, professionally, personally and financially. His overall philosophy is complete self-reliance. This witty and fun book inspires a delightful spirit of independence and after reading this, I am looking forward to making lots of money investing in the stock market.

Excellent Presentation of an Array of Stinking Cases.......1999-10-23
I can't say anything more about this book. The author's presentation skills and overall arrangements are marvelous. It's not only informative to read it, but extremely fun! Though my firm specializes in securities, internal control, and compliance areas, I still regularly raise those issues highlighted in this book to my colleagues over email or during conference. We all benefit from it a lot.

Product Description
Information technology has produced new ethical challenges and concerns in dealing with issues about privacy, security, piracy and professional ethics. Contemporary Issues in Ethics and Information Technology discusses these issues as well as other important ethical issues such as the outsourcing of high-level jobs and the value of IT itself. The main framework for ethical problems used in Contemporary Issues in Ethics and Information Technology is derived from the work of the late philosopher John Rawls. Rawls contribution to ethics was a theory of justice rooted in the social contract theory of the Declaration of Independence and the U. S. Constitution. The authors discussion of the value of IT also builds on the views of the philosopher, Martin Heidegger, on modern technology as an independent force in human existence with its own point-of-view. This book provides guidance for IT professionals and users for practical ethical problems.

Book Description
Ethics and Media Culture straddles the practical and ethical issues of contention encountered by journalists. The book's various contributors cover a diversity of issues and viewpoints, attempting to broaden out the debates particularly in relation to Journalism Studies, Cultural Studies, Sociology of Culture and Communications, Philosophy and History.
The debate concerning media ethics has intensified in recent years, fuelled mainly by the standards of journalist and media practices. The role of practitioners has taken centre-stage as concerns over what constitutes ethical, and therefore socially acceptable practice and behaviour, by the public, practitioners and intellectuals alike. The discursive relationship between the production and consumption of information is central to the debate regarding moral conduct, particularly in light of the commercialisation of the media. Considering that media institutions operate in a climate of intense competition, the value of information and its corresponding quality have begun to be critically assessed in terms of ethical understanding.
A degree of open-endedness is maintained in discussions throughout this book, which is intended to engage the reader with the issues raised and determine their own conclusions.
In-depth coverage of media ethics
Open-ended discussions invite readers to draw their own conclusions
Contributors offer varied approaches to the subjects addressed

Economic Compulsion and Christian Ethics (New Studies in Christian Ethics)
ASIN: 052147048X |
Book Description
Peter Sedgwick explores the relation of a theology of justice to that of human identity in the context of the market economy, and engages with critics of capitalism and the market. He examines three aspects of the market economy: first, how does it shape personal identity, through consumption and the experience of paid employment in relation to the work ethic? Second, what impact does the global economy have on local cultures? Finally, as manufacturing changes out of all recognition through the impact of technology and global competition, what is the effect in terms of poverty? Drawing on the response of the Catholic Church, both in the United States and in papal encyclicals, to the market economy from 1985–1991, Sedgwick argues that its involvement deserves to be better known. Moreover, he recommends that the Churches remain part of the debate in reforming and humanizing the market economy.

Book Description
With the birth of the cloned sheep named "Dolly," a technique once found only in science fiction has suddenly become reality, along with a host of new ethical, social, religious, and public policy dilemmas. What potential benefits could cloning research offer for the treatment of human disease? How do the scientific facts differ from the public perception of cloning? Will it be possible to clone human beings in the near future, and if so, for what purpose? Are scientists playing God? Should the government regulate such research?
These are just a few of the profound questions addressed in this timely collection of the most significant articles on the subject of cloning. Michael Ruse and Aryne Sheppard have selected the work of leading scientists, medical ethicists, healthcare specialists, philosophers, and representatives of various religous denominations to create an overview of the many issues raised by this amazing scientific advance.
Contributors include: Justine Burley, Ronald Cole-Turner, David Concar, David Elliot, Walter Glannon, Stephen Jay Gould, John Harris, Soren Holm, Axel Kahn, Leon R., Kass, A. J. Kind, Philip Kitcher, Arlene Judith Klotzko, J. H. Lipschutz, Harry M. Meade, Bernard E. Rollin, Julian Savulescu, A. E. Schnieke, Mary Warnock, Robert Williamson, Ian Wilmut, and Robert Winston.
In breadth of coverage and quality of the contributions, there is no comparable volume to this excellent collection on one of the most important issues of this century.

Book Description
In Sex and Salvation, author Roger Steven Evans gathers over thirty documents from early Catholic, pseudopigraphical and heterodox letters, epistles, apologies, and canon law that trace the importance of virginity in early Christianity. Evans contends that the sexual ethic established by early Christian authors has reverberated throughout the intervening centuries, and is still being felt in the post modern world of the 21st century.

Sacred Dynamics of Virginity.......2005-02-15
Most, if not all, of the ethnic and religious, ancient, Mediterranean cultures expected their young women to remain virginal until the wedding night. What makes these documents so fascinating is that these writers were not just telling their young maidens to remain virginal until marriage to their hus¬bands. They were calling for a commitment to life-long virginity, to forgo marriage and children, and to claim Christ as their only husband.
Early Christians were constantly thinking and writing about eternity, i.e., escape from this evil world, salvation from sin, etc. The writers of these doc¬uments on virginity were also interested in teleological concerns, and ex¬plained to their readers that there were eternal consequences associated with the decision to commit to a life of virginity. And while scholars have explored various early Christian soteriological paradigms, Virginity as a way of salvation, has not to date been identified as one of those paradigms. However the overwhelming plethora of evidence (epistles, letters, apologies, stories, canon
law), irresistible by virtue of its volume, concerning early Christian virginity, both in theology and practice, brought together and analyzed in this book, will cause scholars to reengage the subject of early Christian understandings of salvation.
The belief in virginity as a way of salvation cannot be dismissed as just an-other "work" proscribed by the early church Fathers as a way of earning God's favor. Not only does the practice of virginity give virgins access to God in ways that no other good work does, but virgins, at least by the fourth cen¬tury, seem to have their own salvific powers. They, in fact, are believed to be saviours; sometimes for their communities, and sometimes for their families. The questions of why this happened when this happened has not yet been thoroughly examined. It is interesting to note, however, that this growing el¬evation of the powers of virgins coincides with the rise of the status of "ever virgin Mary." It also coincides with the "conversion" to Christianity of hun¬dreds of thousands of people in the Roman Empire; many of whom may have had female saviours in their pantheon of gods.
It is hoped, then, that this book will cause other scholars and students of history to recognize the interest in human sexuality that often occupied the in¬terests of many of the early Christian leaders, and how it was believed that a persons sexual history could very well either haunt or bless the believer throughout eternity.
