New England is a remarkably compact region of the country, yet even within those six tightly knit states there's an incredible amount of diversity and variety of terrain, scenery, and atmosphere. Therefore, in planning a vacation getaway, location is usually the first priority, and accommodations are the next, since where you stay provides the flavor and tone that colors your trip, and it will be the hub from which you branch out and explore. In fact, depending on the sort of holiday you have in mind, where you lodge may assume prime importance, because a charming country bed-and-breakfast or village inn can become the destination itself. So for a weekend ramble, a romantic tryst, a family reunion, ski-lodge experience, a spa splurge, business excursion, island escape, bed-and-breakfast retreat, or resort indulgence, what you chiefly need is a guide to lodgings, and that's what Christina Tree and Kimberly Grant provide. They visited and tirelessly researched more than 1,000 accommodations across New England, and from that vast pool selected 350 places to stay that appeal to various tastes, preferences, and budgets. There's the Whalewalk Inn on Cape Cod, a tranquil and romantic retreat on 3.5 acres of an isolated 1830s estate. In Sugar Hill, New Hampshire, is Sunset Hill House--a country inn atop a 1,700-foot ridge in the White Mountains, with full country breakfasts, mountain-range views, fireplaces, a luxurious pool and golf/ski facilities, plus hiking, biking, or horse-drawn sleigh rides, depending on the season. Or there's Quisisana in Center Lovell, Maine, a resort for music lovers with one-, two-, and three-bedroom cottages on one of Maine's deepest lakes. Founded in 1917 as a place where musicians could play together for their own entertainment, the 47-acre compound features more than 70 conservatory students who cook and serve food by day, and perform chamber music, operas, and concert arias by night. Browsing through Best Places to Stay is a pleasure, surpassed only by the actual vacation it may launch. --Stephanie Gold

4 out of 5 stars Should be two editions.......2004-10-10

This is a really decent book for getting the big picture on many places to stay in New England. While it's a really impressive undertaking, it might be too much for one book -- I would find this book much more manageable were it in two editions -- northern and southern. My binding on this book separated in several places very quickly.

2 out of 5 stars Praises too many hotels to be plausible.......2000-05-27

I used this book to pick out a couple of places to stay in Vermont, and regretted it. I should have been tipped off by the fact that every single review in the book is glowingly positive; a dead giveaway that the book is not independent. It seems very likely to me that this is one of those guides where the inns and hotels pay to be included, and may even write their own reviews.

The book is divided up by types of place, so there's a "Country B&B" section, a "Romantic Getaway" section, a "Lakeside" section, and so on. We booked one of the "Gourmet Getaways" and one of the "Farms"; the former was a disaster, but the latter was OK. The gourmet place, a fancy inn in Ludlow, was described as providing "sumptuous feasts" for breakfast, with "excellently trained and most personable" staff, and the option of picking up a "sophisticated picnic lunch". It's hard to imagine the editors actually ate at this place: the staff clearly hated the management and were close-mouthed and unfriendly (and we overheard the owner loudly berating one of the waitresses); the cooking was very good, but not extraordinary, and the picnic was ridiculous--for $25 a head we each got a nice little ash bucket with a quarter bottle of very cheap champagne, a chunk of cheese, and a hunk of bread.

The farm was described a little more accurately--the views were truly incredible, and the cooking was home-cooking, wisely not praised in the guide book.

At the gourmet place, in Ludlow, we met up with a couple of friends from Britain. They'd booked on our recommendations, but had bought a guide book anyway, and we were alarmed to discover a much harsher evaluation of where we were about to stay. In the end, we enjoyed ourselves enough--good company and Vermont scenery can overcome most ills. When we shop for a vacation now, though, we always look for a guide book that seems willing to criticize.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have if you are looking for gracious hosts.......1999-07-01

This book has been an invaluable source for my business - New England B&B Reservation Services. What I like most is that many of the places I have called out of this book have been gracious and professional. I have to make a lot of "cold calls" in this business when I get requests for areas outside of my listings. It is nice to know that my call will be received well. We only carry those hosts who offer exceptional hospitality, so if I don't have a good conversation with the bed & breakfasts and country inns, then I cannot recommend them to my clients. The descriptions set forth in this book are generally true and honest. When I visit the places personally, I already know what to expect.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Engaging and Informative Read!!.......2006-04-17

Boston wrote this book exactly how I would have written it if I knew all that stuff about taxation. He even prefaces it all with some valuable lessons about money and how the Feds sneaked this whole system in on us (like so many other things). In addition it is entertaining and written in such a way that you won't get completely bogged down in all the legal garbage. I recommend this book to anyone who is sick and tired of flushing their hard-earned money down the toilet by VOLUNTEERING TO GIVE UP THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS.

5 out of 5 stars This book IS the authority on untaxation .......2005-10-31

This book is addictive, I can't put it down, I have read other books about the fedral income tax scheme, but this one is clearly the VERY BEST, it does an equally impressive job explaining not only WHY MOST PEOPLE are NOT LIABLE for an income tax but also HOW TO STOP paying them and HOW to respond if the IRS picks your name out of the hat, which is unlikely if you lay the proper foundation and get yourself informed of your rights.

2 out of 5 stars Good for the spirit, but that's it.......2004-08-09

I have researched the Constitutional side of taxation for several years now. I have dozens of Supreme Court cases, and the list goes on. There is only one person I have found to provide factual and usable information. That man is Otto Skinner. (...)

If you want to stop paying income taxes, and not worry about going to jail, there is only one way to go about doing it. This is outlined in Mr. Skinner's books. I particularly recommend his book The Biggest "Tax Loophole" Of All. I have read many books by many other tax patriots, but Otto is the only one to cut through the BS and provide the facts. Mr. Skinner himself has not been paying income taxes for nearly two decades and has never been to court. How many other "tax patriots" can claim that?

          (...)

Oh, and just for clarification, I'm not a kid. Kid's review is just a simple and quick way to say what I have to say.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject!.......2003-01-05

I'm sorry that I missed this book when it first came out because it has so much useful information about the federal income tax and other related subjects. The author sometimes gets a bit long winded for my taste, but that really doesn't detract from the information contained therein.

I'm going to review the book by chapter as opposed to the book as a whole. I think that the reader will get more information this way.

          1) WHAT IS THIS BOOK ALL ABOUT?
A rant on American ignorance and untax history.

          2) THE NATURAL LAWS
A rant on the natural laws of government.

          3) MONEY, DOLLARS, AND CURRENCY
Info on what is real money, currency, and inflation. Good chapter!

          4) THE FEDERAL RESERVE
Info on how the Federal Reserve Bank is NOT a part of the US government. How it issues its paper debt, the depression of 1929, etc. Quite informative if you've never known it before.

          5) 1933-TODAY: THE GREEN-STAMP ECONOMY
Info on how the US greenbacks went from being backed by gold to being backed by nothing.

          6) THE IRS HAS NO JURISDICTION OVER YOU!
Information on the limited jurisdiction of Congress, the IRC definitions of "United States", state Citizen v. US citizen. He clearly shows the legislative authority of Congress on page 6/6. One thing that he missed is that the IRS is NOT an agency of the United States! For a revealing expose about the true origins of the IRS search the web for the document "THE BIGGEST HEIST IN HISTORY" by William Cooper.

          7) YOUR LABOR IS AN UNTAXABLE RIGHT
Direct v. indirect taxes, how your wages aren't income (i.e. profit).

          8) YOUR PRIVATE PROPERTY IS A "FOREIGN ESTATE"
Positive v. non-positive law (the IRC is NOT positive law!), how your property is outside of United States jurisdiction.

          9) THE 16th AMENDMENT
A good chapter on how the history of the 16th amendment. For a in depth study of the 16th amendment read "THE LAW THAT NEVER WAS", by Bill Benson.

          10) "SOCIAL SECURITY" IS SOCIALIST INSECURITY
A rant on how social security is NOT insurance or financially sound. Too bad that he doesn't discuss how the social security act only applies in the (federal) United States - not in any of the union states! For a more detailed report about Social Security search the web for "SOCIAL SECURITY TAX AND TAX WITHHOLDING ARE VOLUNTARY WITHIN THE 50 STATES". Excellent information in this file.

          11) YOUR WAGES ARE NOT IRC "WAGES"
How you're tricked into believing you're an "employee", an "individual", and a "person" for income tax purposes. Excellent information!

          12) HOW THE IRS TRICKED YOU INTO WITHHOLDING
How the words "must" and "shall" mean "may" in the IRC, privacy act notice, withholding agreements.

          13) YOU ARE A "NONRESIDENT ALIEN"
How if you're not a US citizen, but a state Citizen you're foreign to the United States. Good chapter.

          14) MONOPOLY© - THE WORLD GAME
          Misc points of interest.

          15) TOWARDS A ONE-WORLD CURRENCY
How the electronic money system is coming, an interesting insight on the "war on drugs".

          16) WHY YOU'VE NO MORAL DUTY TO PAY THE IRS
Rant on how the US government is bloated and destroying the country, and the American family.

          17) YOUR "FAIR SHARE" ARE THE "PRICE YOU PAY"
Counters the guilt tactics used to get you to feel guilty about not "paying your fair share".

          18) REPUBLIC vs. DEMOCRACY
A good discussion on how democracy doesn't work. FYI this country was not founded as a democracy, but as a republic. (See Art. 4, Sec. 4)

          19) FUTURE TYRANNY ON THE HORIZON
How to deal with the coming Fed ID card and gun control.

          20) THE FORTH BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT
The informed jury - he shows how jurors can decide on both the law as well as the facts of a case. Excellent!

          21) FIXING THINGS
While I agree with his views don't hold your breath for any of this to happen - the government has too much to lose!

          22) TAKING A STAND
          The title says it all.

          23) GET INFORMED - GET INVOLVED!
Very good information in this chapter on how to wake-up!

          24) HOW TO STOP WITHHOLDING
The best information on how to stop withholding without claiming "exempt" on a W-4 form. Better information on the subject than in any of Irwin Schiff's books!

          25) HOW TO AVOID JURISDICTIONAL TRAPS
Good advice on how to avoid "volunteering" in different ways.

          26) BOOKS, SOURCES, AND ORGANIZATIONS
Numerous books and organizations to help you continue your search for the truth. While it's outdated by a decade, the books can be obtained by inter-library loan or a used book store and the organizations that are still around can be found on the web.

After reading this book I would recommend that you continue your research by doing the following:

          A) Search the web for a document titled "AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MEANING OF THE TERM UNITED STATES". While some of the code sections are out dated - it has very good information. Read it!

          B) Search the web for the document "PUBLIC JUDICIAL NOTICE", BY William Cooper. There are three parts to this document. Read them all!

          C) Find "THE DIXIELAND LAW JOURNAL" on the web. That site is by attorney Larry BeCraft and he has good information on it.

          D) Get a copy of "LEGAL RESEARCH" by Stephen Elias. After reading this book you will be able to research the law as good as any attorney.

I highly recommend this book over any of Irwin Schiff's books on the federal income tax.

          5 out of 5 stars Enlightening!.......2001-09-23

Whether you intend to use the information in this book to avoid volunteering for federal witholding or not, it's well worth reading for all the related information. There is a wealth of references to works of other authors and organizations too, that are helpful. I get so tired of hearing all the "there's nothing you can do about it" whining. Yes we CAN do something about it. People before us DID "do something about it", but you have to first choose to, and then take action. This is a book I recommend. I read it, and I'm now buying another for a neighbor.

One area that has not been reviewed in developing countries is the growing focus on different segments of the taxpayer population--including the large taxpayers--as a way to encourage greater stability in public revenue flows, improve the effectiveness and efficiency of tax administration, and introduce innovations in the public sector. Based on a sample of about 40 countries, this paper provides an overview of country practices in terms of the organization, systems, and procedures used by tax administrations to monitor the compliance of the large taxpayers. The paper also reviews the effectiveness of large taxpayer operations in selected developing and transition countries where the IMF has recommended their establishment.

5 out of 5 stars An outrageously tall tale.......2007-01-26

This is a delightful tale of Josh McBroom and his family as they move west (to Iowa to be exact) and take up the honest work of farming the land. Of course, they meet up with tricky Hector "Heck" Jones who attempts to cheat them. However, from that point on, McBroom and his loving family are overwhelmed with the great abundance that the land yields. Watch out for the watermelons and pumpkins! This is a great American tall tale that should keep both young and older readers smiling.

              5 out of 5 stars A Lesson from McBroom.......2000-02-22

I read this book repeatedly throughout my childhood (probably the first printing),and I think that the essence of the book is that you can make it through anything life throws at you if you have a positive attitude and the will to succeed. I recently repurchased this book to read to my nieces. A "10"

I'm 34 and can still name all McBroom's children, can envision the moth's flying from his change purse, and have wonderful images of his children "riding" the produce as it springs out of the top soil. Very colorful and endearing!
