Bought as a gift for my dad - he says it was terrific.......2007-10-07
My dad said this was the best book on CD he has listened too. He is a Roosevelt fan and really enjoyed the book.
Roosevelt was pure "Do"........2007-08-14
The opening chapter is the most intriguing which speaks of President Roosevelt on New Year's Day and how we was able to shake hands on an average of 50 grips a minute. From the prologue of the book, the reader understands that one is reading about a man whose intelligence and strength is extraordinary in the truest sense. From this point as President in 1907, Edmund Morris retraces Roosevelt's history, beginning with his parents. As the young Roosevelt matures one senses the insatiable desire for knowledge and the unbounded determination to overcome all obstacles from childhood to adulthood. From his love of natural sciences as a boy to his rise in politics and to the Presidency, Roosevelt's life was marked with challenges, conflicts, and accomplishments. For example, most know of Roosevelt's sickliness and frequent asthma attacks. The book records how his father would ride the coach at high speeds in order to force lungs into Young Teddy's lungs. Some years later when his father approaches Theodore and gives him the decision to develop his body to match his mental prowess, Young Teddy replied with a grin that he would make his body, which he did. This account has many such moments of Roosevelt's life, and the reader is almost dumbfounded when considering the character and charisma of this man, and how it led him to the Presidency.
The book occasionally slows when describing the low points of Roosevelt's life and loses its force as Theodore's own life did when he lost his wife and mother on the same day. It was at this time that Roosevelt went to the American West to recover from this tragic event, and which he fell in love with. He later returned to the world of politics with energy and determination that marked him as a man and a near un-paralleled leader.
The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt is an incredible biography of an incredible man who was truly a giant amongst those of his age.
Outstanding!.......2007-08-09
One of the best biographies around.... no wonder it comes so highly recommended! If you want an engaging biography, well written about an unforgettable character who made a big difference in the world, this is the book for you.....
Easy to See Why it Won the Pulitzer Prize.......2007-06-05
This book won the pulitzer prize, and I can see why. I am actually reading this series backwards. I read the Theodore Rex book awhile back, and did not realize there was another book in the series when I did. So I went back and bought this book.
This book is very well written and provides the right amount of detail into the early life (before the presidency) of Teddy Roosevelt. What a life he led before he became president. The author had done a fine job of sorting through the records and correspondence that was available to him, it appears that alot of it was destroyed after Roosevelts first wife died.
If you want to learn more about Theodore Roosevelt, I would highly recommend you read this book along with the "sequel" called Theodore Rex, which details the presidential years.
The good, the bad and the Ugly of TR.......2007-05-25
Morris book takes a look at the early life of Theodore Roosevelt including his time with the rough riders. The first 350 pages of this book are boring. They categorize his early years at Harvard which seem very random and his courtship of his wife. It tracks his hopes and dreams and his time out west. TR is a random president who does not plan things out always and this book does reflect that. It is so random however that it is very difficult to see the significance of events that are included in those first 350 pages. What is done very well however, is the time with the rough riders, his reform days on the NYPD as president of the commission, and his time with the Navy. Here we see the TR that most of us envision. One of the things that Morris does very well is capture the spirit of the Gilded Age and the battle for Civil Service Reform. As a person who studies the Gilded Age he missed several key points but on the whole did a good job of capturing the spirit of the battle. TR was one of the reformers who made headlines thanks to the help of Jacob Riis and this partnership would have been nice to have explained further. The governorship and time back from the rough riders show TR as he is going to be. He is a scheming politician with a reformist attitude. While he awaits McKinley's decision on the VP he does some good in New York State when he can work with the legislature. The every end of the book comes about after the nomination to VP and McKinley's assignation. This is a very hard book to rate. The first 350 pages were among some of the worst I have ever read however the next 400 were very good and prize worthy. As such I will leave it at three stars but there could have been a lot more explained within this book.
Book Description
In Against a White Sky, Laurie Stapleton reveals her experiences with honesty and humor as a gay high school teacher in an "All-American" city. Having spent most of her young adult life in Santa Cruz, California a beach town accepting of its large lesbian community Laurie relocates to the more conservative San Joaquin Valley to enroll in an accelerated teacher credentialing program. There, Laurie discovers that she is the only woman who regularly (well, always) wears slacks. She decides she'd better change the way she dresses, walks and talks to feel socially comfortable and maybe even safe.
Laurie becomes certified to teach public high school within a year. Mindful of recent bouts with poverty and low self-esteem, she accepts the first teaching offer she receives a public high school deeper in the heart of the valley, in a city voted "All-American." Her relocation doesn't sit too well with Laurie's girlfriend back in Santa Cruz, who says to Laurie, "You don't look like you anymore."
Despite her struggle to sway students' and teachers' attention from her sexual identity, they seem to "know" anyway, as evidenced by homophobic slurs she hears in the school halls, and snickers from the student-athletes she coaches. Eventually she asks herself the hard questions: why did she choose to live and teach in a town in which she is at best ignored, and at worse harassed, because of her sexual orientation? What is the meaning behind the irony that, as she helps her students discover their voices, she is silencing her own?

Finding Her Place.......2004-08-19
Against A White Sky is Laurie Stapleton's account of her difficulties fitting into the public school system as a gay person trying (though not wanting) to remain in the closet. The three years covered in this book, her year in a Central California university teaching credential program and her first two years as a high school English teacher and coach in a small, agricultural town, show Stapleton attempting to keep a secret that seems to seep out of her pores. As a lesbian with some characteristics society deems "masculine," she endures stares ("Is that a he or a she"), name-calling by community members and students, and even an attempt to strip her of her job - a job she does well - because of "suspicions" about her sexual preference. Stapleton is also frank about some of the little discomforts, most notably the fit and look of "feminized" outfits for someone with her height and frame, the utter silliness of having to pretend to be looking for an attractive man while out on the town with a friend who doesn't know she's gay, and the effort it takes to remember the made-up guy's name she came up with for her female lover.
The beauty of the book lies in Stapleton's honesty about her pain, her willingness to be specific about its causes, and the love she has for teaching and her students. As she chronicles her classroom and coaching experiences, it becomes clear that her sexual preference transcends - or, actually, is simply irrelevant to - the devotion she brings to the individuals under her care. As an added bonus for those who live in California's Central Valley are the eloquently-described settings.
In fact, setting is what Against A White Sky is all about: Stapleton's journey to find her place. As much as there is to learn from people like Laurie who, closeted or not, are working right next to hetereosexuals, the book has much to say about loneliness, fitting in, and most importantly, finding ways to like oneself. Laurie Stapleton's journey was not just one of how to overcome difficulty from without but also of how to find "home" within herself to take with her wherever she goes.
Learning Experience.......2004-07-26
This book should be required reading for anyone entering the teaching profession. Not only will it facilitate an understanding of curriculum, teaching processes, and biases, but it will open our eyes {and hearts} a little bit wider to how we can, and should reach students. This book will also, hopefully, help us all to see how we accept ourselves and present our authentic selves, is more important than how others view us. It is a total learning experience along with the author.
Real Teaching.......2004-07-10
This book gave me a sense of shared intimacy. It seems that Laurie Stapleton; the fun, intelligent, engaging teacher, could easily be a separate person from Laurie Stapleton; the witty, deep-thinking, and sometimes tormented lesbian. The beauty is that the two combined are important components of the whole, special human being, and as I watched her learn self-respect and self-acceptance, I saw her grow wise before my eyes. Against The White Sky stimulates perspective and empathy, and it offers true inspiration for not only teachers, but for students, as well. It kindles hope for not only gays and lesbians, but for women, minorities, and every educator who faces the intrinsic challenges of the profession. I wish the author continued strength and courage.
Deeply Touching.......2004-07-08
I could not put down this deeply touching memoir of the struggles a young woman must go through to be able to teach. The conservative community in which she works judges her not on the quality of her teaching ability, but on her looks and mannerisms, things students always overlook if the teacher is any good at all. Her wonderful friends help her get through the year. This book is full of wisdom.
Open, honest and a great read for everyone.......2004-06-24
This book is important for everyone to read -- whether or not they are sympathetic to the homosexual's struggle. It is a poignent story about a human being and her dreams. There are stories here that everyone can relate to. I have laughed and cried while reading this, because Laurie relates eloquently the pain of relationships that don't work out and the humor that goes on in a classroom full of wise-cracking adolescents. Her writing draws pictures of small California towns and the variety of people that populate them. A great book by a very strong and intelligent lady.
Customer Reviews:
From the book jacket:.......2001-03-03
Aaron Wildavsky's greatest concern, as expressed in his writings, is how people manage to live together. This concern may at first appear to have little to do with the study of budgeting, but for Wildavsky, budgeting made living together possible. Indeed, as he argues here, if you cannot budget, you cannot govern.
Budgeting and Governing gathers in one place a mass of material that otherwise would be lost in a wilderness of journals and edited volumes. With few exceptions, Wildavsky chose the articles in this collection. They are organized largely chronologically, so that the reader can trace the progression of his thought, which moved from studies of the American federal government, through comparative work, and on to placing budgeting within a broader theory of political culture.
Wildavsky wrote about budgeting because, in his words, "when a process involves power, authority, culture, consensus, and conflict, it captures a great deal of national political life." Wildavsky was interested in budgeting because of what it could tell us about the classic questions of politics: who gets what, how, and why? His earlier analyses focus narrowly on budgeting personnel and agency actors in answering these questions, while in his later work, the contending actors become sub-cultural types.
To Wildavsky, budgeting was about finding terms for living together in spite of ideological differences. Budgetary incrementalism helped to manage this otherwise unmanageable task. He thought synoptic budgeting and all related reforms would increase disagreement and raise the stakes, and so were unwise. Analysis had to serve politics, not try to displace it.

The series features articles on a broad range of important and timely topics, including professionalism, social responsibility, ethical judgment, and accountability. The professional responsibilities of accountants are broad-based; they must serve clients and user groups whose needs, incentives, and goals may be in conflict. Further, accountants must interpret and apply codes of conduct, accounting and auditing principles, and securities regulations. Compliance with professional guidelines is judgment-based, and characteristics of the individual, the culture, and situations affect how these guidelines are interpreted and applied, as well as when they might be violated. Interactions between accountants, regulators, standard setters, and industries also have ethical components. Research into the nature of these interactions, resulting dilemmas, and how and why accountants resolve them, is the focus of this journal.
