Book Description
Ernest Mandel (1923-1995) was a member of a very rare breed: a theorist of activist Marxism. Leader of the international Trotskyist movement, lifelong revolutionary, and scholar of world renown, Mandel was one of those few individuals who combined the roles of political leader and respected intellectual. This work presents a critical appraisal of the vast range of Mandel's theoretical work. The authors assess his contributions to political and economic theory; his humanist and optimistic variety of Marxism; his crucial contribution to the analysis of the dynamic of capitalism in the late twentieth century; his analyses of the bureaucracy in the workers' movement; his conception of the problems involved in the transition to socialism; and the specific relationship that a man who came close to perishing in the Nazi concentration camps had to the question of the Holocaust. The volume also includes a bibliography of Mandel's works as well as two previously unpublished pieces by him, one on the Holocaust, the other on the foundations of his unrepentant commitment to Marxism. Contributors include Robin Blackburn, Norman Geras, Michael Lowy, Charles Post, Francisco Louca, Michel Husson, Jesus Albarracin, Pedro Montes, and Catherine Samary.

I guess truth really is relative.......2005-10-11
I would have given this book a good review. The stories were interesting and raw...just like I like them. That is until I got to the part where "Lusty Lloyd" writes a story about someone I love. It was unkind, ignorant, and just plain false. Had the names of these people been used, he could have been very easily sued for slander. I grew up in Ash Valley...I know these people. The title states that these are "His True Life Stories." 207 true stories? I think not. In fact, a great deal of these stories are embellishments. I bought this book as a Christmas present, but could not give it to anyone because it would have hurt them. Had it been true, I'd let it go. But I know it's not. I was very disappointed. But if you don't care about that, then you'll probably love this book.
Where's Huck and Tom?.......2003-02-20
LLoyd and Ellen, you have outdone yourself. The stories are funny , to the point, and written in down to earth fashion such as Mark Twain. The book may not be politically correct, but you will read it with a smile on your face and and a chuckle in your heart. It brings back many familiar adventures when I was a kid growing up in the back woods of Oregon. The Pen and Ink renderings of Ellen Keeland to illustrate the stories is impecable. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.
He knows his stuff!.......2003-02-10
Lloyd Keeland is an American Icon. He has been there done that. As a former Marine in WWII I can attest to his heroics in surviving Iwo Jima. He was one of the few that survived the entire campaign somewhat intact. His yarns about the logging industry brought back some great memories for me. Again, he knows his stuff. Some of the episodes at Loon Lake were indeed hilarious, they were also very believable. Some of those goofy happenings I have been through so I can vouch for their authenticity. Anyone who knows the Northwest or has an interest in our history should enjoy Lusty Lloyd, he is a classic.
The Lusty Life of Loon Lake Lloyd.......2003-02-08
A MUST read for everyone. Anyone that would like to see what life was like for the people who built this country will enjoy this book. It does not matter which side of the fence you are on you will enjoy it and if you are like alot of people today and don't do much but sit on the fence you will enjoy it too. A book about people this country should be taking better care of now ie better healthcare and prescription drugs for our older Americans
The Lusty Life of Loon Lake Lloyd.......2003-02-05
I'm sure you get many letters and compliments on your book, but my husband has never commented on a book as much as he has after reading yours. He thoroughly enjoyed the copy loaned to him by his cousin, and I thought a copy of his own would be a nice Christmas present! I'm so glad that you wrote this book about your very interesting and adventurous life. So many stories are forgotten or lost to us, your book helps to preserve these tales for future generations to enjoy.
Book Description
Using simple economic reasoning, this book analyzes a broad range of global challenges including global warming, ozone shield depletion, acid rain, nuclear waste disposal, revolution dispersion, international terrorism, disease eradication, population growth, tropical deforestation, and peacemaking. These challenges are put into perspective in terms of scientific, economic, and political considerations. This book is intended for a wide audience drawn from the social sciences. It should also interest the general reader who wants to learn about global challenges.

Economic Logic Applied to "Global Challenges".......2001-12-25
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It takes the logic of economic theory (primarily economic game theory) and applies it to problems that either are affecting, or potentially will affect, everyone on this planet. These "Global Challanges" and the conditions necessary for their solution are then analyzed using the logic inherent to economic game theory. An excellent book that can be read by all people regardless of their knowledge of economics, as everything is explained with the assumption that the reader has never been exposed to the concepts. Helpful even to those who do have an understanding of economics.
An interesting application of rational choice theory.......2000-03-21
Sandler's book is very appealing in that he does not suggest that the panacea for all the world's collective action problems is a supranational government structure. In fact, he recognizes that "Nationalism is still alive" (Sandler, xiv) and therefore supranational solutions to these problems are unlikely. He searches for those conditions under which nations may act unilaterally (if their stake is large enough) or in a loose confederation to solve these "global challenges," rather than calling for an improbable and impractical supranational solution. Furthermore, Sandler's argument is appealing because he is able to apply it to broad variety of international problems-from environment to disease and security issues. In each case, he applies the logic of collective action to suggest the conditions under which progress might be made toward a solution. Most interestingly, Sandler suggests that there are different games at work in many of these collective action problems, each with unique equilibria.

Book Description
This book investigates the role of governmental and non-governmental actors in energy-environment decision making. An examination of the trade-offs between various energy options which are currently before policymakers in both Canada and the United States focuses on the environmental and economic consequences of public and private choices which face leaders in both countries as well. Whether the existing regulatory environment will prove feasible and/or desirable under the new Canada United States Free Trade Agreement is also discussed. Some of the questions the authors explore include: How do we assign costs and benefits to alternative energy strategies without underestimating the importance of environmental factors? What types of regulatory regimes should both countries strive for in order to foster a good balance between environmental protection and economic growth? What kinds of political processes should be instituted to allow for more effective energy/environmental policy choices in both countries? This book will be of interest to students and scholars concerned with the environment and interested in Canada-United States relations.

Book Description
Cross-Cultural Risk Perception demonstrates the richness and wealth of theoretical insights and practical information that risk perception studies can offer to policy makers, risk experts, and interested parties. The book begins with an extended introduction summarizing the state of the art in risk perception research and core issues of cross-cultural comparisons. The main body of the book consists of four cross-cultural studies on public attitudes towards risk in different countries, including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Sweden, Bulgaria, Romania, Japan, and China. The last chapter critically discusses the main findings from these studies and proposes a framework for understanding and investigating cross-cultural risk perception. Finally, implications for communication, regulation and management are outlined.
The two editors, sociologist Ortwin Renn (Center of Technology Assessment, Germany) and psychologist Bernd Rohrmann (University of Melbourne, Australia), have been engaged in risk research for the last three decades. They both have written extensively on this subject and provided new empirical and theoretical insights into the growing body of international risk perception research.

Book Description
The primary audience for this report is managers involved with the highest levels of the strategic planning process, and consultants who help their clients with this task. The user will not only benefit from the hundreds of hours that went into the methodology and its application, but also from its alternative perspective on strategic planning in Japan.
This report helps executives evaluate strategic investment and entry alternatives in Japan. In order to evaluate Japan, Icon Group International, Inc. draws on a methodology developed by Professor Philip Parker at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France. The methodology decomposes a country's strategic potential along two key dimensions: (1) latent demand, and (2) accessibility. A country may have very high latent demand, yet have low accessibility, making it a less attractive market than many smaller potential countries having higher levels of accessibility.
This report provides a strategic profile of Japan along these lines. Throughout the discussion, literally hundreds of statistics on Japan are benchmarked against regional and global averages. The reader can thus quickly understand where Japan fits into the regional and global perspective. The report first investigates the economic fundamentals affecting Japan. These fundamentals are the source for Japan's latent demand. Then, the subsequent chapters detail Japan's accessibility. This evaluation covers a number of entry alternatives, including export strategies, and local direct investment strategies. If a firm decides to have a local presence in Japan, this requires a strategic understanding of local business conditions. The conditions investigated in this report include local marketing (advertising, distribution, pricing issues) and entry strategies (opening an office, joint venturing, etc.), as well as human resources management (labor laws, costs, regulations). Because local presence can increase...
