Great guide to western PA.......2002-07-19
I first found this book at my library, and was amazed at how many locations it covers! I was born in western PA, and grew up in central PA, but there were some intruiging places in this guide that I'd never heard of before. If you are a history buff and have a nice, lazy weekend to spend following the "history trail" as laid in this book - do it! What a nice way to fall in love with PA all over again. It'd be twice as nice to do in the fall when the leaves are changing. I logged on to Amazon.com today expressly in the hopes of ordering this book - I can't recommend it enough and am looking forward to taking it with me on regional trips in the future.

Log Book by C. Dale Nouse.......2000-01-15
I've used this log book on an extended cruise down the east coast from New York to Florida and found it very well organized. The daily pages have room for all the information I record, plus comments and maintenance. The hard bound two page per day format works well, separating out navigation info from general comments. There is a daily checklist that makes sense. The binding has withstood weather that has almost destroyed other logs I have used. I usually keep it closed when not making entries which keeps the pages from getting soaked or blowing around. Finally, I really like that it has a lot of pages for daily entries. Some of the other logs I've used had many pages of extraneous info better left to navigation texts, and ran out of daily pages too soon.

Totally unacceptable----does not have the plastic ring binder that allowed the book to remain open and flat unlike original---not for serious cruisers.

But the fact is that the application forms needed to obtain copies of vital records vary from state to state and from country to country, often necessitating a tedious and time-wasting exchange of correspondence. The International Vital Records Handbook is designed to put an end to all that, as it offers a complete, up-to-date collection of vital records application forms from nations throughout the world, thus simplifying and speeding up the process by which vital records are obtained.
Divided into two parts, this new 4th edition of the International Vital Records Handbook contains the latest forms and information for each of the fifty states and also furnishes details about the records that were created prior to statewide vital records registration; then, in alphabetical sequence, it covers all the other countries of the world, giving, where available, their current forms and instructions; and since most non-English-speaking nations have neither a centralized vital records registration system nor application forms of any kind, this work provides as a substitute a list of national and provincial record repositories or key addresses of other institutions that might be of assistance.
Application forms issued by the various civil registration offices and the current procedures for obtaining a birth, marriage, or death certificate (and, in many cases, a divorce or adoption record) are given for each state, province, territory, or country. The application forms are the most current forms in use, and they can be copies and re-copied as often as the need arises. Simply photocopy the form you need, check the corresponding data page for the name and address of the vital records office, the fees involved in applying for copies of vital records, and any special notes on the records themselves, then send the fee and the completed form to the appropriate record office. CAUTION! OUTDATED!.......2006-04-06
I am a Reference Librarian and have often used this resource for library patrons. It has been a good resource. HOWEVER this edition is prior to the events of 9/11. Many States have greatly revised their requirements for obtaining vital records due to increased security measures. Unless you go online and compare current vital record requirements for each locale, you may be wasting your time using the information in this edition. Hopefully the author is preparing a new edition with post-9/11 requirements; but until then, do NOT rely on this edition as a current accurate handbook for today's requirements. You will be wasting your time and money.

In the towns and cities of New York, prior to 1880, official records of marriage and death were rarely filed. Fortunately, newspapers can often be used to overcome this deficiency, as they contain a wealth of information about the marriages and deaths of local people. Moreover, newspaper notices of marriages and deaths often contain detail lacking in the more frequently sought cemetery, church, and town record books. The compilers of this new book have joined forces to produce a list of 7,000 marriages and deaths--naming 20,000 persons in all--from fifteen newspapers of the Hudson-Mohawk Valley area, giving researchers a much-needed boost in their search for vital records.
Typically the marriage notices give such information as the names of the bride and groom, the date of the marriage, the place, the names of parents, and the name of the officiating minister. Death notices, on the other hand, provide the date and place of death, age at death, sometimes cause of death, occupation, and names of survivors.

This CD contains a massive amount of information easily searched from the software on the disk. The over fourteen thousand pages contain enough facts and information to keep me busy for a long time to come. If you have roots in Connecticut prior to 1850 I would definitely recommend this CD.

This original Clearfield publication is a faithful transcription of the birth, marriage, and death records of the town of Kingston, New Hampshire. The book is divided into two parts: vital records from 1694 through 1900, which were abstracted from the original records, and vital records from 1901 through 1994, which are based on Kingston Town Reports for those years. Within each half of the book, births are followed by marriages, which are, in turn, followed by deaths. The births and marriages are arranged alphabetically according to the name of the father or husband, while the deaths are arranged alphabetically by the name of the deceased.
The following is typical of the kind of information that can be found in the Kingston volume. Birth records, which are arranged in family units, give the names of the parents, names and dates of birth of their children, and frequently the parents' places of birth or residence (other than Kingston) at the time of record. The marriage records furnish the full names of the bride and groom, their places of birth or residence, and the date of the marriage. The death records identify the deceased by name, date of death, and age at death or date of birth, and frequently include the names of the deceased's parent(s), and, in the case of later records, the place of death. While all male Kingstonians are readily found in one of the six alphabetical sub-sections in the book, Mrs. Arseneault's 12,000-name index to females makes it easy to locate mothers and daughters scattered in the text.
All in all, this is an extraordinary transcription and, without question, the starting point for Kingston, New Hampshire family history.
