Erudite and informative.......2007-02-14
Mr. Maxtone-Graham's book is the product of any number of trips on any number of ships bound for any number of ports. Though it contains a great deal of sage advice, it isn't a guide (and Mr. Maxtone-Graham offers spirited and eloquent reasons for just why it isn't). It is, rather, an invitation to step onboard an ocean liner and experience a pleasure far too few are familiar with in this age of hustle-and-bustle. Language used well is also a pleasure, and those familiar with Mr. Maxtone-Graham's writings will easily recognize his wonderful prose. If you're interested in booking passage on a liner (any liner) but have your doubts, this book will erase them. I can't wait to set sail, myself.
Big words? Please........2002-12-05
I don't understand why anyone -- even an "average joe" -- would consider this a difficult read. It's true that Mr. Maxtone-Graham's diction is a bit more formal than is usual nowadays, but I found this to be one of the book's greatest charms. I also enjoyed the personal tone, and did not find it overly self-indulgent. That may be a matter of taste. What worries me is that anyone with a normal IQ would find this book hard to understand. And you don't have to be familiar with every word to understand a book.
I found "Cruise Savvy" to be a refreshingly different kind of travel guide, and it sold me on the idea of cruises. We booked our first shortly after I read it, and found the advice we'd taken with us from the book to be as helpful and appropriate as that found in more conventional travel guides. Not as comprehensive, perhaps -- but it made up for that in providing an enjoyable reading experience and in evoking a "cruise mood." In short, "Cruise Savvy" combines helpful information with reading pleasure. It is perhaps best read along with a laundry-list kind of guide, for maximum preparedness.
should be rated one half star.......2001-10-03
This book does contain nuggets of good advice but they are buried under tons of self-involved verbiage.
The author's obvious knowledge of cruise travel is bogged down with overly verbose language that makes reading it a chore rather than a pleasure. On a more positive note the photographs are interesting and the title catches the eye.
The book is not helpful to first-time cruisers or those looking for an easy read.
FLABBY SAVVY-TOO MANY BIGGGGG WORDS.......2001-09-18
IS THE AUTHORS INTENTION TO INFORM US OR SHOW US HOW LARGE HIS VOCABULARY IS??? FOR THE AVERAGE "JOE" GOING ON THE 1ST CRUISE THEY CAN EASILY BE SCARED AWAY BY MR MAXTONE-GRAHAMS' USE OF EXTENSIVE VERBAL DIARRHEA. HIS VERBIAGE GIVES AN AIR OF PRETENTIOUSNESS..... REQUIRING IMMODIUM NOT DRAMAMINE..

Book Description
Students can measure their progress through a wealth of self-test material (with solutions) and a summary of chapter key points.
Book Description
Real accounting for today's students: Libby/ Libby/ Short wrote this book with the belief that financial accounting is an inherently interesting subject, but traditional textbooks are often not so interesting. In the Second Edition, the authors continue to bring the material to life offering the most real-world driven financial accounting text on the market. By writing the entire book based on real company annual reports, presenting material in a logical manner appropriate for introductory students, including active learning features, and further emphasizing the uses of accounting information, the Second Edition will continue to captivate instructors and students across the country.

Not Helpful.......2007-05-07
Rather than summarizing or outlining basic concepts in the Libby, Libby, Short text, Cram101 offered little more than a list of vocabulary terms which accompany the text (and can be obtained free of cost on McGraw Hill's website) I would not recommend these outlines to anyone who is looking for a thorough review of Financial Accounting.
Useless Study Guide.......2007-05-07
The left pages contain lists of definitions while the right pages are left blank. Other than that, there is nothing else in the book.
Possibly the worst textbook I ever used ... .......2007-02-11
This is the first book I have ever reviewed -- and it is only because I feel so strongly about it. This book is nowhere near being a beginning accounting textbook. The authors take for granted that the reader understands accounting terms as clear explanations are few and far between or missing completely. Perhaps the authors are far too advanced to be able to explain the basics of their business. The content is very confusing as are the multi-colored, multi-boxed, multi-fonted, multi-faceted, CNN/USA Today-style pages. I would definitely NOT recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand accounting to any degree.
Excellent Introductory text for Accounting.......2006-11-19
Given how dry a subject Accounting can be (especially for non-Accounting majors) - this book really was fantastic. It serves up excellent examples, has a modern, graphic and splashy style that made it easy to follow along and refer back to key terms, and I liked the tie-ins to business in the general commentary. It's a great text for a self-paced course like an online accounting course offered at Berkeley. I felt like I learned a lot from this book.
Shopper Satisfaction.......2005-09-29
Actually, the supplier no longer had the book available. But the supplier contacted me immediately and my account was credited almost as quickly as the money went out. So I am still a happy shopper.

Customer Reviews:
Best book on the market.......2006-01-07
I'm a professor at a large state university. On the rare occasions when I teach this course, I always order the Edmonds book.
I believe the purpose of introductory or fundamental financial accounting is to teach students how to read and use finanacial statements. If used properly by the instructor, this is one of only two books on the market (the other is for MBA students) that can be used for this purpose.
I whole-heartedly endorse the horizontal model used by Edmonds, et. al. Most text book writers use a form of it. I even use it in my writings.
Some students want to learn debits and credits. In my opinion, this is best left to technical courses in accounting for those interested in the nuts and bolts.
However, for anyone who want to get something long-lasting from the course, this text book combined with the right professor, will be about the only option.
If this or any text book is used to teach technical aspects at the fundamental level, you won't have a good experience. Techinical aspects are best covered in Intermediate Accounting.
Better download the PowerPoint®.......2005-08-01
This text is abysmal. It is riddled with errors and omissions, gives incomplete examples, and presents information unsequentially. It relies too much and for too long on the horizontal model without practical applicatoin to journals and statements. If your college uses this text (as Medaille College and Finger Lakes Community College currently do) run away!
Fortunately, many of the gaps are filled in by the PowerPoint® presentations they make available on their support site: http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072472960/student_view0/ Note that these presentations are more extensive than the ones on the Topic Tackler CD that comes with the book. You must download these presentations if you want to have a chance with this book.
A good book with the right instructor.......2002-08-02
I've read the reviews stating that this is a confusing book. I disagree completely. Although the author does not immediately delve into traditional T-accounts, the introduction of the "horizontal model" serves as a good foundation for building the awareness of the accounting equation that should be second nature BEFORE tackling T-accounts. The text's preface states: "A horizontal financial statements model replaces the accounting equation as the predominant teaching platform. The model enables students to VISUALIZE THE SIMULTANEOUS EFFECTS OF A SINGLE BUSINESS EVENT on the income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows." I felt as though this methodology was very effective for my learning style. Recording transactions in T-accounts came almost as second nature after mastering the horizontal model.
The "Working Papers" (a separate workbook) makes doing the assigned problems easy by providing a ready-made template for each problem. If you've had to draw your own T-accounts or your own journal in a notebook before, you will definitely appreciate this.
This text serves as a good introduction to the skills necessary to master financial accounting.
Most Confusing Accounting Textbook On The Market Today........2000-10-27
This Book begins using something called horizontial statments and then in chapter 5 switches to regular T accounts thus confusing students completely, I have yet to find a student that tells me the book is easy to understand or useful. It would be helpful if there was a solutions manual. Our school will change books next semester. It's not even good enough to make dorm furniture.
Great college companion!.......2000-10-20
This book is an excellent book to go with a Financial Accounting course. Everything is laid out in plain English, and shows you in diagrams and models exactly how each kind of transaction works. I recommend for professors everywhere to adopt this book for their clases. I'm glad mine did!
