    Book Description

On December 9, 1998, the proceedings in the House of Commons came to a shocking halt when the Liberal MP for Windsor-St Clair, Shaughnessy Cohen, collapsed on the floor of the chamber. The heartfelt outpouring of every party, from foreign ambassadors, even from seasoned press gallery journalists - caught those beyond the hothouse of Parliament Hill by surprise. Who was this woman, an apparently obscure second-term backbencher, who commanded such respect and affection?

Shaughnessy Cohen's story is one that Canadians rarely see up close: the rollercoaster career of a politician who operates outside the spotlight reserved for cabinet ministers, whose hectic life is divided between the nation's capital and a modest constituency office back home, whose only national coverage might be found in the barbed satire of Frank magazine. But to those who knew her, the 50-year-old Cohen - born into an Irish Catholic family, married to a Jewish academic - was an exceptional, unforgettable figure.

A criminal lawyer who, like the city she represented, enjoyed a slightly naughty, good-time reputation, Shaughnessy Cohen learned how to use women's politics to succeed in a man's world. When she arrived in Ottawa in 1993, she was shamelessly partisan and fiercely ambitious, carefully cultivating ties with power brokers like Paul Martin, Allan Rock, Herb Gray, Lloyd Axworthy, and Anne McLellan, her Ottawa roommate. And she was notoriously indiscreet; even the PMO couldn't quiet "Radio Shaughnessy" when the Liberals were warring amongst themselves over gun control and gay rights.

By the time of her death, she had served as a member of Parliament for five years, surviving the infighting of Windsor politics to win her seat in two elections, learning sometimes painful lessons as a rookie, and finally finding her niche as the much admired chair of the Justice Committee. Eventually she developed a style of politics reaching across barriers that discouraged others and leavening every effort with a generous humour that was subtly effective. To watch how she did it is to go inside the nomination battles, the caucus meetings, the committee rooms where the unseen drama of the nation's politics is played out, and the understand, perhaps in a way that has never before been so fully revealed, the realities that confront a woman in political life.

On December 14, 1911, the classical age of polar exploration ended when Norway's Roald Amundsen conquered the South Pole. His competitor for the prize, Britain's Robert Scott, arrived one month later--but died on the return with four of his men only 11 miles from their next cache of supplies. But it was Scott, ironically, who became the legend, Britain's heroic failure, "a monument to sheer ambition and bull-headed persistence. His achievement was to perpetuate the romantic myth of the explorer as martyr, and ... to glorify suffering and self-sacrifice as ends in themselves." The world promptly forgot about Amundsen.

Biographer Ronald Huntford's attempt to restore Amundsen to glory, first published in 1979 under the title Scott and Amundsen, has been thawed as part of the Modern Library Exploration series, captained by Jon Krakauer (of Into Thin Air fame). The Last Place on Earth is a complex and fascinating account of the race for this last great terrestrial goal, and it's pointedly geared toward demythologizing Scott. Though this was the age of the amateur explorer, Amundsen was a professional: he left little to chance, apprenticed with Eskimos, and obsessed over every detail. While Scott clung fast to the British rule of "No skis, no dogs," Amundsen understood that both were vital to survival, and they clearly won him the Pole.

Amundsen in Huntford's view is the "last great Viking" and Scott his bungling opposite: "stupid ... recklessly incompetent," and irresponsible in the extreme--failings that cost him and his teammates their lives. Yet for all of Scott's real or exaggerated faults, he understood far better than Amundsen the power of a well-crafted sentence. Scott's diaries were recovered and widely published, and if the world insisted on lionizing Scott, it was partly because he told a better story. Huntford's bias aside, it's clear that both Scott and Amundsen were valiant and deeply flawed. "Scott ... had set out to be an heroic example. Amundsen merely wanted to be first at the pole. Both had their prayers answered." --Svenja Soldovieri

    5 out of 5 stars A Ripping Good Yarn.......2007-02-20

I saw a program on PBS about Amundsen and the Northwest Passage and decided I wanted to know more so I bought this book. Much has already been said and thus doesn't need repeating. If you hold to the hero status of Scott then you are apt to be severely disappointed. He does NOT fair well in the cold light of history. Amundsen comes across as someone who was at the peak of his game and was just better at this sort of thing.

One of the best books I've read in a LONG time. Well worth the time spent.

2 out of 5 stars Read the notes at the end of the book!.......2007-02-18

There are simply too many errors in this book to state here. I can only suggest that the reader look at the notes at the end of the book. Huntford derives almost all of his negative comments from two or three people on Scott's expeditions. Why are so few of the comments collected from hundreds of men who loved and supported Scott. I'd hate to have my life judged before the world by the few people I've pissed off out of the many I've known. And just a note in passing---the Markham diary or jornal he keeps referring to? It's not a diary or journal; it is a collection of notes made by a very old Markham years after he encountered Scott on the street (prior to appointing Scott as leader on the first expedition).

Scott certainly made some serious judgement errors and prevaricated occassionally, but Huntford lies on almost every page of his book by omission and deception.

I have no complaints about his description of Amundsen; Amundsen was the better of the two explorers. In fact, Amundson was arguably the greatest of all polar explorers in the heroc age. Some of the best polar explorers appear almost amateurish by comparison.

4 out of 5 stars The Last Place On Earth.......2007-01-12

For those who like to read history, this is very well researched.

4 out of 5 stars Well researched, penetrating, a tad biased.......2006-12-07

I've finished reading both this and Fiennes "Race to the Pole". Huntford clearly spent an enormous amount of time digging through many expedition diaries and personal letter archives. He simply doesn't just quote them, but knits them together in a fine tapestry of interrelated decisions and events. This provides keen insights into the importance of planning, preparation, and attention to detail during operations.

Huntford carefully walks the reader through how Amundsen clearly understood the difficulties ahead of him, while Scott was content to draw hasty conclusions based on faulty testing, prejudice, and unwarranted opinions of the uninformed. Huntford also details the subtle and not-so-subtle difference in the leadership styles of both men, one who built a consensus, and the other who promulgated orders without allowing discussion or feedback.

My only complaints are 1) Huntford descended into the use of terms such as "weak, incompetent, and stupid" for Scott, which was unnecessary and detracted slightly from the rest of his scholarship, and 2) he avoided the use of much of the material that would have reflected positively on Scott, as found in Fiennes book, which is why I only gave this 4 stars.

1 out of 5 stars The last book on earth...twisted facts, and damn lies .......2006-08-10

The central theme of this book, (i.e that Captain Scott was a blundering idiot) has been exposed as nonsense by a series of recent and well balanced books written by expolorers such as Ranulph Fiennes and Antarctic researchers such as Susan Solomon, rather than amateur critics. Read "The Worst journey in the World" if you want a proper account of the Terra Nova expedition. But if you really must buy "The Last Place on Earth" then also read Antarctic explorer Ranulph Fiennes "Captain Scott" which exposes it as a lie.

      Book Description

'For God's sake look after our people' Captain Scott's harrowing account of his expedition to the South Pole in 1910-12 was first published in 1913. In his journals Scott records his party's optimistic departure from New Zealand, the hazardous voyage of theTerra Nova to Antarctica, and the trek with ponies and dogs across the ice to the Pole. On the way the explorers conduct scientific experiments, collect specimens, and get to know each other's characters. Their discovery that Amundsen has beaten them to their goal, and the endurance with which they face an 850-mile march to safety, have become the stuff of legend. This new edition publishes for the first time a complete list of the changes made to Scott's original text before publication. In his Introduction Max Jones illuminates the Journals' writing and publication, Scott's changing reputation, and the continued attraction of heroes in our cynical age.

In November 1910, a ship called Terra Nova left New Zealand on its way south to Antarctica. On board was an international team of explorers led by Robert Falcon Scott, a man determined to be the first to reach the South Pole. A year and a half later, Scott and three members of his team died during a brutal blizzard. Their dream of reaching the Pole first had already been dashed by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, and now on their return trip--slowed by ill health and bad weather--Scott's party found themselves trapped in a tent without sufficient provisions, while the wind howled endlessly outside. Even in his final hours, Scott found the strength to continue the journal he'd started at the beginning of his adventures; the diary was found beside his frozen body.

Scott's Last Expedition: The Journals is the explorer's detailed account of his time in Antarctica. The team's daily progress towards their final goal is recorded in Scott's vivid, personal narrative, as well as his impressions of the harsh conditions, the stark beauty of the tundra, and his own increasingly desperate ambition to beat his rivals to the Pole. Shortly before he died, Scott wrote: "Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman." Robert Falcon Scott and his men died, but their story lives on in his journals.

About halfway through this diary account of the Terra Nova expedition, it becomes clear why Amundsen made it first to the pole ... and why Scott's was the greater achievement. The Norwegians focused completely on getting to the pole and back: no fuss, no elaboration, no scientific spin-offs. Amundsen cared not a whit about paleobotany, the discovery of a new parasite in fish livers or pony psychology. (More to the point, Amundsen kept to dogs.) Scott took an interest in everything, and he was willing to experiment. The diaries brim with accounts of sledging diets, weather balloons, penguin dissections, ice crystal formation, geologic strata and killer whales. He writes of what it is like to be without the sun for four months, of feelings stirred by the aurora australis, and of the colors of ice and sea and sky. He describes camp life and daily routines and the antics of ponies and dogs. And, knowing he has failed in his goal, he speaks movingly of his obligations to his country ... and to science. Among the items dragged to their final camp by three exhausted, half-frozen dying men were 35 pounds of fossils - fossils which would help rewrite geologic history.

3 out of 5 stars Flawed -- But buy it anyway.......2004-02-21

It's really too bad that "Scotts Last Expedition" was heavily edited by Sir J.M. Barrie, the talented author of Peter Pan. We'll never get to read Scott's real diary, which, I suspect, is a good deal more forthcoming on his feelings about Lt. Teddy Evans (his No. 2), Cecil Mears (his dog driver), and perhaps his own flawed self.

Still, "Scott's Last Expedition" belongs in every collection on Antarctic exploration, regardless of whether you feel Scott is a hero or a buffoon. An original copy from the 1920s will set you back $300 or more, so this paperback reprint for $10 or so from Amazon isn't a bad deal at all. True, it doesn't look or smell the same, but it still has all of that great source material on diet, clothing, equipment and the officers and crew.

5 out of 5 stars Dress warmly to read this one.......2002-07-13

While the story is known to most armchair explorers, nothing beats the saga right from the horse's mouth. Yes, the journal does drag in places, but so do long days of waiting in the Antarctic. It makes us impatient and edgy, wondering if the storms will ever end or what equipment will break next. Knowing the climax detracts nothing from how they got there--or didn't. This and Shackleton's own story really have to be read if one enjoys this kind of tale.

The authoritive reference for what happened on Scott's polar journey - since it was written by the man himself. Don't be put off by the appalling introduction by Bainbridge (which ruins the story if you don't know all the details since it is just a brief summary of the rest of the book - just skip it!). I wouldn't recommend reading this first (try Scott by Elspeth Huxley as an intro) but for historical interest if you get into the history of the antarctic this is a must. The actual description of the southern journey only makes up the final section of the book, most of it is concerned with the depot laying and over wintering parts of the expedition. As such most of the book is mostly concerned with the details of preparing for the journey and hence probably won't appeal as a general introduction to Scott's last expedition.

        Book Description

The dramatic disappearance of the explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his companions in their race to reach the South Pole was seen by their contemporaries as creating heroes in a new mould. A few years later, during World War I, Scott's rival Shackleton also nearly met his death in the Antarctic, becoming in the process another hero. Both men were set on a pedestal, uncritically, because they tried and failed.

As the years have gone by, Scott's reputation has been weighed in the balance with Shackleton's - and found wanting. Even the precious journals that Scott wrote on the journey are no longer in print, while photographs of the expedition have gathered dust in scientific institutes. In this new edition of the journals, Peter King re-examines Scott's exploits, setting his own account against modern studies of the Polar Race and thus enabling readers to make their own judgements for the first time.

The text is illuminated by a selection of photographs, many of breath-taking quality, taken by one of the greatest Antarctic explorers, Herbert Ponting, who accompanied Scott. More than a hundred and forty of these, many only recently released by the Royal Geographical Society, bring this extraordinary story to life.

        Book Description

Many have told the story of Scott's life, but no one has charted the cultural reverberations of his death and sacrifice on the eve of the greatest slaughter in British history - the First World War. A dramatic opening leads to a compelling examination of the British traditions of exploration, the scientific ambitions of the expedition, the 'race to the South Pole', and the disaster itself. Scott's death was a pivotal moment in British history, and central to this is his extraordinary journal, which offers the ultimate expression of self-control and heroism in the face of death. This important and challenging interpretation of Scott's life and death re-evaluates the man and his sacrifice.

4 out of 5 stars An investiagtion of Scotts south pole expedition.......2003-11-16

Scott reached the South Pole....and found a Norwegian flag planted on it. He had arrived just weeks late. The mechanical `beasts' he had brought with him, tread driven sledges, have broken down. Soon Scotts party is starving and unable to walk, and eventually they die, having reached the South Pole but not been able to return to their homeland. This book chronicles the disaster of Scotts expedition, the success and dramatic failures it encountered. The author then explores the hitherto unknown part of Scotts accomplishment: the aftermath. Such interesting aspects are looked at as the memorial designs for Scott and the many memorials in London's Newspapers. Also the author looks at the `imperialism' of Scotts enterprise and the way in which Scott and his `martyrdom' have been remembered. An interesting book, with much to offer.

One of the greatest adventures of modern times, R.F. Scott's expedition to the South Pole pitted him and his team not only against the elements, but also against the Norwegian team, led by Amundsen. In the end Scott was beaten by both. Amundsen arrived at the pole a month before Scott and on the return trip the party perished in the freezing cold. This book present's Scott's journal entries from preparations for the trip in New Zealand to his final message before he died, written just eleven miles from base camp and safety. The work also features many superb photographs depicting members of the party and the pristine Antarctic landscape. By turns informative, humorous, riveting and tragic the journals, republished in their entirety, are sure to thrill a new generation of readers.

4 out of 5 stars The Best Auditing Book Available.......2004-05-19

During the 16 years that I have taught Financial Auditing at the university level I have been constantly on the lookout for the best available book. I chose Whittington & Pany because (1) it is succinct, (2) it presents auditing concepts clearly (although the authors do sugar coat the accounting scandals of the past 20 years and fail to give credit where credit is due by naming the firms involved in them), (3) the page layout is attractive and easy to read, and most importantly (4) my students preferred it over other texts (one student told me that she chose my class after looking through the assigned texts for all of the Auditing sections, an excellent idea).

The current (15th ed.) has been brought up to date with a limited discussion of Sarbanes-Oxley and the PCAOB.

The material is obviously dry, but I found that it was possible to make my classes more interesting by incorporating newspaper accounts of the more egregious audit failures in the assigned readings, and by being honest about the arrogance, greed and stupidity that are all too typical of the accounting profession today. This practice has brought complaints by the local offices of the major firms, to which my department head replied that they are welcome to come speak to the classes to explain their side of the story. To date, they have not accepted the invitation.

5 out of 5 stars Whittington and Pany ROCK!!!!!.......2001-05-08

Let me tell ya! What do you get when you combine Whittington, Pany, and Auditing? It's just a boatload of accounting fun!!! These guys know how to put together a book on auditing. This thing is a real page turner. Damn! Attestation really rocks but Assurance Services will just blow your mind. Even if your're not an accountant, this is a great read. I understand the 13th edition is already a red hot item, so grab a copy today before they're all sold out. This is the one book you'll definitely want to have with you if you're traveling and you have room in your back pack for just one book. Read it, then read it again and again. Seriously, you can't put this thing down. It's THAT good! You'll be talking about it with your friends and family for years to come. Can't wait for someone to turn this puppy into an offering for the big screen. That would be sweeeet!!!

The author could have written a better textbook by leaving out the "fluff." The author either had to add "filler" to create a larger textbook or he "likes to hear himself talk." I suggest buying a study guide, if one is available.
