Robin Cruise lets us peek inside the journal of Fiona Claire Jardin, an exceptional girl who is hilariously honest about her likes and dislikes, her friends, her teachers, and the ups and downs of having divorced parents. Back and forth, back and forth--Fiona shares her crankiness at having to shuttle between her parents' houses. It's hard to keep track of her things. It's hard to keep track of the rules at each house (no fingernail polish at her mother's house; no jumping on the bed at her father's house--or is it the other way around?). Most of all, it's hard to feel as though part of her life is missing, as if the last piece in a jigsaw puzzle will never be put in place. Frankly, with all of the fuss and confusion, Fiona has forgotten how to laugh. She hates writing in her journal a lot of the time, and she's not shy about saying so; the whole thing was her mother's "brilliant" idea. She thinks it might help Fiona better understand her feelings, but Fiona just wonders if all this writing will help her remember how to laugh. Delightful and wise beyond her years, Fiona will knock your socks off and remind you that good families, the kind you can trust and love, come in all shapes and sizes.
Book Description
In this humorous, heartbreaking--and hopeful--novel, a young girl struggles to come to terms with her parents’ divorce. Funny, poignant, and above all, honest, Fiona’s journal entries reveal a roller coaster of emotions as she tries to cope in a world that’s been turned upside down. This story is sure to strike a chord with anyone--young or old--who has experienced the comfort and turmoil of family life.
Customer Reviews:
You Can Relate!.......2007-02-24
My 12 year old and I have both read this book and I know that she has read it more than once. I enjoyed this story because it takes you on an 11 year old's journey through life and makes you realize how we all have problems that we must deal with and gave suggestions on how to overcome them. It also reminded me, as an adult, about some of the "minor" things that were so important to me at that age, and that may be so important to my children now. Although the main issue in this book is divorce, I think children not living this situation would enjoy this book because it is fun to read and everyone seems to know someone with divorced parents. It can help children relate to others and understand.
As an emotional tool, it could be useful.......2006-05-09
Maybe this book could be a useful emotional tool for an 8-11 year old girl dealing with her parents' divorce. The author relates a lot of day-to-day minutae that kids of divorce must go through to one degree or another, and the book might help someone see that they're not alone in their situation.
As youth fiction, it was just marginal. I didn't really hear a 10-11 year old girl talking - more like an adult trying to sound like a 10-11 year old girl. It was just not an authentic voice speaking from the pages.
One of my favorite books.......2002-01-31
I have very few favorite books, and this one is in my all-time favorite list. I bought this book as a fifth or sixth grader, I can't remember. Anyway, I've read it about 20 times and I love it. I've never had my parents go through divorce, so it was very interesting to find out what it's like to have your parents go through a divorce and live in two different houses through the eyes of a person my age at the time. The book, Fiona's Private Pages, I plan to read because I loved this book so much. I'm now in 8th grade and still read it when there's no other books to read. I highly recomend this book.
Keeps you guessing.......2001-07-06
I really enjoyed this book. The book is about Fiona. She is about 11 for most of the book. Fiona is told she must keep a diary for her thoughts, especially the thoughts about her parent's recent divorce.
I would recommend this book to 5th and 6th grade girls or if there was a divorce in a girl's family.
Fiona's life changes a lot after her parent's divorce and it's great to hear how "terrible" her life is now.
This book is really fun to read, even over summer vacation.
A so-so book.......2001-07-05
This is definitely not a great book. The writing is not very good, but the plot is. This is a fun read, but not a great one. The main character is an 11 year girl in 6th grade whose parents have just announced that they are getting a divorce. The book follows Fiona's life through her year as she meets new friends, goes to a therapist, and adjusts to family changes. A good read, not a great one.

Customer Reviews:
Outdated & Upside Down!.......2006-11-30
I wanted to give this book as a gift to my grandparents who like to take cruises; however, I will not be giving this to anyone, as it would be embarassing to do so.
When I pulled the book out of the wrapper and opened it, I realized that it had been bound upside down--the embossed front cover was actually upside down on the BACK of the book. I suppose you could keep the book jacket on to hide the error, but that's tacky.
Also, I don't know why they're still selling this book with calendars from 1998-2001 in it. I assumed that they would update the book with new calendar pages each year. You can't very well use this book to plan future cruises with past calendars.
I'm very disappointed that this journal didn't meet my expectations. I thought it was a great idea and could've been something that my grandparents enjoyed using, but instead it will be going in the trash. At least it was only 10 bucks.
Amazon, I recommend that if this publisher isn't going to make an updated edition of this book with current calendars and learn to bind the cover in the correct orientation, then you should stop carrying their product.
Consumers, don't buy this journal. A regular journal could easily converted into a much better cruise journal than this one is.
159 pages of opportunity to chronicle your cruise adventure.......1999-01-08
The Cruise Journal gives you plenty of space to chronicle everything you'd want to remember and more. There are places to note the ship particulars, crew names with remarks, new friends with space for even e-mails, meals, entertainment, ports of call, excursions, gifts, photos and of course pages and pages for other jottings of events. At the back of the book is opportunity to plan future crusies with calendars from 1998-2001. There is a handy check list of supplies, conversion charts including clothing from other countries and maps. This is a very complete journal for that very special trip.

Book Description
In the spring of 1881, the steamship Thomas Corwin began a daring voyage of 15,000 nautical miles into treacherous Arctic seas to search for captain G. W. De Long and his ship Jeannette, which had left San Francisco two years earlier to drift across the North Pole while trapped in ice. There had been no word from the Jeannette for months. The ship was never found, but John Muir's account of this expedition--which includes vivid descriptions of ice-choked seas, Arctic vegetation, awe-inspiring glaciers, and the native people--captures the magic and mystery of the farthest reaches of the American frontier. Founder of the Sierra Club and its president until his death, discoverer of Glacier Bay and father of the national park system, John Muir was a spirit so free that all he did to prepare for an expedition was to "throw some tea and bread into an old sack and jump over the back fence." In a world confronting the deterioration of the natural environment and an ever-quickening pace of life, the attraction of Muir's writings has never been greater.

95 pages of useful space for an affordable price.......1999-01-09
The Cruise Diary: A Journal for Travelers by Sea is a compact (95 pages) journal that includes specific pages for recording those special memories. The journal includes areas for you to fill in about the ship and crew, personal medical/insurance data in case of a need,a travelers checklist,a two year calendar (which unfortunetly is 1997 and 1998),an open calendar you can fill in and a place to record ports of call. It includes space to record places you visit, entertainment, meals, and new friends (no e-mail option but can be noted below other information). It also has an area to record your travelers checks, purchases, and photos. At the back are weights and measures and clothing conversion charts as well as a few only passable maps. I also reviewed the Cruise Journal which has most of the same features as the Cruise Diary. The Cruise Journal is a hardcover, a little larger in overall size(which does make it a little easier to read) and many more pages, but it also cost almost twice as much as the Cruise Diary. As noted the Diary's calendars are out of date and an e-mail option is not included and also the maps are only passable. Although the Cruise Journal doesn't have these shortcomings, it isn't vital to the overall use of the Cruise Diary to have these features. And the price is good for the Cruise Diary if that is a concern.

Do business like Jack Welch
When Jack Welch took the reins of General Electric in 1981, he reformulated GE in his own image -- tough, smart, competitive, and relentless. First published in 1994,
Get Better or Get Beaten became a bestseller as managers sought to understand and mimic the success ;of the man lauded by Fortune as "...perhaps the most admired CEO of his generation." Now, on the eve of his planned April retirement, the new
Get Better or Get Beaten, Second Edition shows you how to compete "Welch style" in today's techologically advanced business arena. Look to this fast-paced book for:
*Jack Welch's latest views on management and leadership
*Examples of how Welch transformed GE into an e-business
*Insights into Six Sigma and other s;uccessfulk GE quality initiatives
*More
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended!.......2004-03-01
The best thing about this book is that it quotes extensively and piquantly from the writings and speeches of Jack Welch. The intriguing list of "29 leadership secrets" (which could have been reduced to ten) is more selective than secret, given that Welch has been preaching them loudly from a very prominent platform for more than 20 years. However, the book will be valuable to Welch neophytes and to fans who want more Jack, or the essence of Jack. Author Robert Slater assumes a certain familiarity with GE's history and initiatives, and sometimes refers to them without explanation. Welch long ago transcended management to become sort of a leadership prophet, and his utterances are sometimes paradoxical, if not contradictory. He says nurture people, but downsize; he says cut bureaucracy, but implement a paperwork intensive Six Sigma program. We promise that somewhere in here, you'll find a managerial principle to fit almost any occasion. What more can you ask of a handbook?
More of the Same from Robert Slater.......2002-08-22
I previously read "Jack Welch and the GE Way", also by Slater and published in 1999, but I never read the original version of "Get Better or Get Beaten". This newer version of "Get Better..." contained a substantial amount of material that was already covered in more detail in "the GE Way" book. Except for some of the material covering events since 1999, I think "the GE Way" was a better choice of the two, especially if you're looking for more detail and analysis. In many ways I felt like I was just re-reading the other book. On the other hand, if you're looking for sort of the 'Cliff Notes' version and want some good insight into Six Sigma, this newer, smaller work by Slater is certainly satisfactory. There's only marginal benefit to reading both of these.
Simple, strategic and to the point.......2002-04-24
This is the first book about GE's Jack Welch I ever read. I bought it because the title is so far the most attractive amongst its keens. "Get Better or Get Beaten" is certainly the norm in today's competitive world. Remarkably, the content is of the same quality as its title. It is so well written that I finished it in 1.5 day.
In fact, the core concepts or the secrets are nothing new. Quality and Re-engineering gurus like Peter Drucker, Philip Crosby, Tom Peters etc had stressed the importance of quality, customer orientation, corporate culture, employee involvement blah blah blah for decades. It's just that Jack Welch had been so successful a real life practitioner and advocate that nobody can neglect. Think about the 6 sigma phenomenon and you know what I mean.
In case you just want to know the secrets without the elaboration, or that you cannot afford one, go to the table of content (Thanks to Amazon) and have a look. All the secrets are already there. (Sorry, Mr. Slater). However, I still think it is a good collectible for your personal library.
p.s. I had worked in an acquired subsidiary of a Fortune 20 company. I am sorry that what happened there was far from what Mr. Welch preached. The result is: The leader five years ago (when it was acquired) is now the fifth in the market.
Get Better, And Then Get Even Better.......2001-11-05
This is one of the few best books on leadership I have read in a long, long time. The others, which compliment this book are Jack Welch's book, "Jack", and Norman Thomas Remick's book on the philosophy behind all the good advice from Mr. Slater and Mr. Welch called "West Point". Read "Get Better" to get better, then read the others to get even better yet. And what's nice about it, they're all available right here on Amazon.com.
Very good !.......2001-06-20
I picked up this book in a bookstore and I did not know what to expect. I was amazed at the wisdom that this man posses when I began to read this book. He is very straightforward and very cool. All the principles are appliable to any kind of business I think. One of the best business books I ever seen, and its based on a man who practice what he preaches. BUY IT !!!
Book Description
GE's Jack Welch is a genius at change, management and getting things done. In 1981, when Welch became General Electric's Chief Executive Officer at age 45, the company was 10th in market value among American corporations. Welch guided GE throughout the turbulent 1980s and into the present, managing, buying and selling businesses, but always keeping the improvement of General Electric his primary focus. By 1995, with a market value of $120 billion, GE was number one, a spectacular management feat that made Welch the envy of every CEO in America. Available for the first time in paperback, the best-selling Get Better or Get Beaten! distills Welch's expertise into 31 leadership secrets. In this exclusive inside look, award-winning Time magazine reporter Robert Slater reveals the personal beliefs, courage, innovation, leadership principles and techniques that propelled Jack Welch to the top.
Customer Reviews:
Business genius: cliff notes version.......2001-05-24
I received a copy of the book while I worked for GE several years ago, and picked it up again recently. When I received the book I felt Jack Welch's ideas were simple, straightforward and obvious. It is only after working for other companies that I realize the genius behind them, and how rare it is for these "simple" concepts to be played out elsewhere in corporate America. Jack Welch is truly a business visionary, and this book outlines many of his ideas, albeit in sketch format. His ideas about re-structuring, de-layering, change management, corporate speed and employee empowerment were all way ahead of their time. Thirty-one of his best ideas are presented here, but unfortunately, with little substance behind them. I would suggest that this book is a great place to start if you are interested in GE's business and corporate philosophies, however, to get more in depth analysis and explanation you will need to look elsewhere. I would recommend this book for a trip, as it is good airplane reading, and may spark some ideas for your business.
Superficial.......2000-12-30
This is a rather superficial book with questionable value. It presents 31 Jack Welch's slogans and without almost any discussion declares them genius. Jack Welch is a very interesting manager whose methods and results deserve a lot more detailed approach. Each of the slogans or ideas should be analyzed, discussed and explained on a good example. Otherwise, as the book is written, the ideas can not be taken seriously by any professional. This book serves as a good introduction to Jack Welch as a manager, but if you want to really learn something, better buy a different book.
Fine Book. But others exist........2000-07-31
There are a series of great books available on Amazon.com that much better explore the world of Jack Welch and GE. After attending a workshop I picked up three from Amazon and two at the library. This was the weakest of the three. First, this is a poorly constructed paperback version. It is just plain cheap. Feels cheap and looks cheap. Thats it for the layout and format.
Second, many of the paragraphs seem to be cut and pasted from one chapter to another. I felt that I was re-reading essentially the same ten paragraphs scattered throughout the book. Very frustrating because it indicates either laziness by the author or redundancy to be pedantic.
Next, many books claim to have a special insight since the author was given rare access to the GE training center known as the "pit." This book claims that as well and quotes Welch at a number of public meetings...in an attempt to reinforce the concepts.
As Welch soon retires, I wonder if these same books will hold the interest they now capture. You are better served by more narrative, substantial texts on Welch and his management style. As always, Amazon readers can rate reviews and many loyalists vote against critics. I have a great admiration for Welch, and what he managed to accomplish. This book does neither him, nor his accomplishments real justice.
Reading this "guide for leaders" I wondered if Welch would look at it and laugh at its simplicity.
A must read!.......1998-11-25
When I first got this book and started reading it in the late evening, I found it so interesting and insightful that I read it completely until the early hours of morning the next day.
Jack Welch is no ordinary leader and GE is no ordinary company. To find out how and why they are so successful and far ahead of their competitors, you should read this book.
While Jack Welch is not perfect (he is human after all), this book is great, in the sense that it explains the basic principles behind GE's extraordinary success.

Book Description
For many years, the accounting profession has attempted to construct a conceptual framework that logically ties together its many ideas and procedures. As this systems view of accounting emerges it is important, argue Swanson and Miller, to make the distinction between opinion or personal interpretation and empirical evidence. In this pioneering book, they develop a coherent theory of accounting measurement based on living systems theory (LST) and thus provide a fundamental framework for classifying the various accounting ideas and procedures into those that concern measurements of concrete economic processes and interpretations of those measurements. Writing for advanced students of accounting and finance, the authors explain the distinctions among concrete, abstracted, and conceptual systems; discuss the concept of money in terms of concrete processes; and survey the connections between twenty LST defined subsystems and accounting information systems. Contrary to most modern accounting theory, they assert that the monetary scale is a ratio level measurement scale fully analogous to other measurement scales used by science. They reject the idea that the units of the scale are variable and show that this general perception arises from the fallacy of confusing the objects being measured with the units of the measurement scale. Using this scale, accounting's unique contribution to information processing is enabling managers and other social deciders to view the diverse matter-energy forms of a complex organization as a coherent whole on the attribute specific exchange value. Finally, Swanson and Miller analyze generally accepted accounting principles, highlighting areas in which the distinction between interpretation and empirical evidence is blurred in practice. They present an extended critique of the usefulness of such principles and propose new alternatives based on living systems theory that will improve both our understanding of accounting methods and measurements and the quality of accounting reporting. Numerous tables and figures enhance the presentation.

Description:
This paper seeks to apply the Hegelian and Marxian dialectic to the interpretation of the present mode of capitalist financial accounting in its totality; as a unified mode of its particularities and universalities. The paper considers that whereas the recent changes in the conceptual framework and standards of accounting seem to be an entire transformation of capitalist accounting from traditional cost based accounting to advanced value based accounting, the general concept of accountability, the essence of the archetype of capitalist double-entry system, and the determination of accounting from the circulation of capital have been underlying the present mode of capitalist accounting. This paper also argues that the contradiction of accounting recognition or profit calculation inherent in the present mode of capitalist accounting corresponds to the contradiction in the contemporary mode of capitalist economy: the split of the investment of the enterprise's capital into productive and non-productive assets, and the split of investors into those who solely deal with securities or fictitious capital and those who invest in productive capital by way of shareholding.
