Colin Turnbull (1924-94) made his reputation with two bestselling works of popular anthropology that tell diametrically opposed tales. The Forest People (1962) holds up the central African Pygmies as examples of the human capacity for communal goodness and love, while The Mountain People (1973) argues that Uganda's Ik tribe, threatened by a killing famine, had cast aside those qualities in favor of soulless individualism. Turnbull's life was as controversial and rife with contradictions as his books, fellow anthropologist Roy Richard Grinker reveals in this absorbing biography. Born in England, Turnbull roamed the world and eventually made his home in America. Product of a conventional, privileged upbringing, he saw himself as a champion for the world's oppressed. He infused anthropology with a passion some deemed unscientific but general readers found electrifying. He was openly homosexual despite the threat this posed to his academic career, which was never his top priority. The love of Turnbull's life was an African American man; he proclaimed Joe Towles's brilliance but was ambivalent about his lover gaining financial independence, and their 29-year relationship was marred by violence and infidelities. Nonetheless, Joe's 1988 death devastated Turnbull, who also succumbed to AIDS six years later. Grinker displays both discernment and critical sympathy in this gripping chronicle of a tumultuous life.
Book Description
What Margaret Mead did for Samoa, Colin Turnbull did for Africa. An upper class Oxford-educated Englishman, Turnbull’s life-long love affair with the African Pygmies made him one of the most famous intellectuals of the 1960s and ‘70s. In an intimate portrait of a remarkable man--at various times a gold-miner, builder of “The African Queen,” and anti-death penalty advocate--Grinker describes how Turnbull fell in love with a beautiful but poor African American named Joe Towles who became as much Turnbul’s heroic creation as did the Pygmies. For 30 years, they lives as an openly gay, interracial couple in New York City and rural Virginia until Joe’s death of AIDS in 1988. Devastated, Turnbull buried his own spirit in a second coffin laid next to Towles, gave away most of his money, and until his own death from AIDS in 1994, lived as a Buddhist monk tutored by the Dalai Lama’s eldest brother. This is a compelling story of a celebrity scholar, his sexuality and his passion for a fiercely lived life.
Customer Reviews:
informative yet rather strange.......2004-09-20
This is an informative biography, no question on that, but one wonders what the relationship was between the author, Roy Grinker, and his subject, Colin Turnbull. Both did doctorates in anthropology at Harvard, and both studied the same peoples in Africa (does getting a PhD in anthropology absolutely necessitate studying pygmies in Afriac? sure seems like it...). From what I've read in other sources, Grinker turned his back on Turnbull's "approach" to pygmie culture, only to regret this after Turnbull's death. One wonders whether or not this book is a too-late tribute to the author's academic father-figure.
Curiosity Satiated.......2002-05-09
I have been curious about Colin Turnbull ever since I read the "Mountain People" several years ago. As an anthropology student, I identified with Turnbull's willingness to "learn" the lifeways of the "other", and in doing so, reshape his own worldview. I am afraid that this book may have told me a little more than I wanted to know however...
Turnbull's relationship with Joseph Towles is a critical part of the story, and I appreciate and acknowledge that. I had to wonder exactly how the biographer knew the very intimate gastroenterological details that were included in the text. It is just a matter of personal taste, but that is the only reason that I did not give the book a complete five star rating. The book does give us a much needed, intimate portrait of an important anthropologist and human being.
Turnbull's life.......2001-07-20
This is an interesting book, but I did not find it as compelling as other reviewers. The material is fascinating, but the presentation is a bit plodding and detracts from the narrative. As a fellow academic, I understand Grinker's desire to include the wealth of details his painstaking research uncovered; but as a reader I wished he'd had a more careful editor who would have excised some of the irrelevant, distracting details and polished the presentation of the rest of the book. (Apart from some clumsy writing, there are even spelling and typographical errors in several chapters!)
As for content, Grinker does a decent job explaining Turnbull's fascination with Africa and "the Other." The chapters on Turnbull's early (pre-anthropologist) life are too many and too long for me, but they do help provide a context for what came after. Grinker does offer some important insights on paradoxes in Turnbull's life and on anthropology's connection to colonial projects. If you are interested in the anthropology of Africa, Anglo-American social science, pre- (and post-) Stonewall experiences of gay men, or Turnbull himself, you will probably enjoy the book despite its flaws. But if you have no patience for slow and awkward writing, don't buy this without perusing it first!
Dr. Turnbull.......2001-01-15
I listened to Dr. Turnbull lecture in West Virginia when I was 19-21 years old in the early eighties in my hometown. At that time I found him an inspiration. He was able to communicate such respect for life, how different people live it and to provide an insight into the beauty of the peoples he had studied. When I saw this book I was delighted because, of course, I was hoping to feel that person I came to know somehow communicated in the text. In the end I was left feeling his life was brutal and disillusioning and a horror in many respects. I think the man I sat down and spoke to years ago, who gave such inspirational lectures, would never have left you this way.
This is not a love story , it's a sad defeated story about failed love and man's degradations. In this way I found the book an oddity.
I suppose Dr. Turnbull was accused of operation with rose colored specs, but in a sense a teacher deals with the human spirit and he was a very elevating person. One thing that stayed with me was his discussion of how without certain fundamental things like food and security people behaved without their "humanity". It helped me appreciate Maslow's heirarchy so much when I came to study that in ed classes and then use it's meaning in teaching. Dr. Faini brought him to our world in school , and his love of music and percussion and world instrumentation was so obviously connected to Dr. Turnbull. I prefer to leave my memories intact and read Turnbull himself, even if the author might contend he has exposed the reality.
A family story.......2000-12-15
I was gratified that Dr. Grinker wrote this book because Colin Turnbull was my cousin, and I knew almost nothing about him. I echo the postive comments by the other reviewers, but what made the book special for me were the references to his family and his relations with them. Dr. Grinker does a wonderful job of not bringing his personal feelings about Colin's work, his homosexuality, or his relationship with Joe Towles into the book. Grinker does, however, give a wonderful sense of Colin and Colin's take on life. One doesn't have to be interested in either anthropology or homosexuality to like this book; it is, simply put, an excellent study of an all-too-human man.

Book Description
The Crisis in Telecommunications Carrier Liability addresses the important public policy issues underlying liability rules for common carriers in the context of telephone companies. These public policy concerns must be evaluated for their compatibility in achieving other public policy objectives, such as universal service, imposed on the telecommunications industry under the Telecommunications Act of 1996. This book offers the industry and policymakers, as well as those hoping to influence the public policy process, both the means and recommendations for designing more appropriate liability rules in order to achieve the numerous social objectives for the telecommunications industry.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Book.......2006-10-06
The concept of common carriage is generally assumed and universally misunderstood. One aspect of the historical mythology that is contorted beyond recognition is the liability of common carriers for the goods carried. If a telegraph, telephone (or dare I say Internet network) mangles the message and causes harm, what liability does that carrier have - and more importantly - why? Barbara Cherry looks at the theoretical underpinnings of the regulatory position and how liability faces new challenges in the post telecom act of 1996 era.
Bringing Order to Chaos.......2000-04-01
Among the myriad works attempting to explain what, if any, fundamental logic guided Congress's 1996 decision to amend the 1934 Communications Act, only an exceptional few succeed. One that does, however, is Professor Barbara Cherry's "The Crisis in Telecommunications Carrier Liability."
Cherry's work employs an historical and institutional approach to decipher seemingly counter-intuitive liability provisions saddled upon incument local exchange carriers and inter-exchange carriers. Rather than focusing exclusively on the text of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, Cherry weaves together a rich tapestry of legal and regulatory history on the one hand, with social policy objectives such as universal service on the other hand. This warp is deftly manipulated with a weft of institutional context to provide one of the most coherent and complete explanations of the state of telecommunications law as it exists today in the United States.
The contradictions between social policy objectives and the over-arching concern for opening the last mile to competitive entry by unbundling the network elements (Section 251)is thoroughly addressed in Cherry's work. She manages this tension well and proposes well-informed policy remedies obviously aimed at a lawmaking audience.
Cherry's work benefits from her industry experience as well as her academic style. It is a must read for any student of telecommunication regulation theory as well as telecommunications policy-makers everywhere. It should be included on the syllabi of communications programs nationwide.
I unequivocally give this book my highest recommendation, and hope that it will spark the kind of informed policy debate it was intended to generate.

A Passable Starting Point for Telecom Law and Policy.......2007-02-02
Even for the interested layperson or college student, telecommunications policy is not the most scintillating concept to consume in the form of a textbook. This particular book will certainly be useful for those primarily interested in its main subject matter, common carrier regulations, while for the more general student this specific example provides a passable introduction to general concepts of telecommunications policy. Learning how regulations are applied to phone companies is a good starting point for further policy and technical studies. This book provides a useful combination of influential court cases, policy documents, and commentary from Brenner, illustrating how regulations are formulated. However, the problem is that these different narratives are all presented in the same voice with little to no transitioning, making it hard for the reader to keep track of where opinions are coming from. Meanwhile, Brenner's commentaries are written more in the form of a critical journal article in which he is trying to argue specific theories, as opposed to the introductory writing style of a textbook. This book has one more strike against it because, even though this is definitely not Brenner's fault, technology has made much of the regulatory material covered herein less prominent today. Note that you'll have to go elsewhere to find how common carrier regulations may or may not apply to more recent developments like cellular or VoIP. [~doomsdayer520~]

Customer Reviews:
Superficial.......2006-10-06
I surprisingly agree with the other reviews. I would not agree that this is a good law school text book. The text - for a legal scholarly work - is largely devoid of citations. Thus the book as a secondary source recounts history almost as hearsay without an ability to get to the primary history. In addition, the subject matter is superficial and insufficiently developed. The Kingsbury Commitment, a huge moment in telecommunications history, is given one paragraph. There is little new here that is not in other books. There is content that is missing. The author discusses Computer I and Computer II, but not Computer III even though that proceeding took place well before the publication of this book.
One Star is Generous........1999-06-23
The "Book" was a let-down. It failed to satisfy even my most basic expectations for this subject matter.
Comprehhensive text on telecommunications regulations.......1999-06-22
Considering that this textbook was intended primarily for law school students, it is equally applicable to telecommunications graduate programs. The material presented is both interesting and helpful in understanding the law and regulation of telecommunications carriers.
Tediously written and presented; lacks cohesion.......1999-03-14
Unfortunately what seemed to be a promising resource in a highly dynamic and important field such as telecommunications turned out to be a huge disappointment. The authors present their subject in dense, hard to follow language that does little to make the field either accessible to novices or useful to practioners.
On the bright side, it makes for a nice door stop!
