Prohibition and Politics: The Life of Bishop James Cannon, Jr........2007-01-24
This book is about my great grandfather. I bought it as a gift for my Dad. He read it and loved it. There is even an old photo of the Bishop's family that includes my grandfather as a child, whom I never knew. Amazing. Thank you.

Book Description
The indefatigable voyager and storyteller Tristan Jones first gained widespread popularity with the publication of his bestselling Saga of a Wayward Sailor in 1979. It chronicles Jones' adventures from 1961 to 1968 aboard his beloved CRESSWELL, a wooden sailboat. Here's a rollicking, rumbustious yarn of small boat seafaring, packed with incidents and chaacters to make you gasp and stretch your eyes.
Customer Reviews:
With a large grain of salt.......2004-02-16
This is a wonderful story and one must read it as a story because the truth of the matter is Mr. Jones made up most of it.
Another great adventure from Triston Jones.......2000-01-15
A truly amazing and very poignant book. Triston has a great style that places you in his eyes and allows you to feel his emotions. This man has experienced more in his life than most of us could in 10 lifetimes. A great adventure by a great man. A sure hit for the sailor or non-sailor.
Glorious in it's honesty and reality flavored with Love.......1999-05-13
I sought the man, in order to tell him how inspirational his adventures and his books are to me...I am disabled but with Tristan's writings, the adventurous spirit that lives inside of me is alive and 'abled' through the honesty in the telling, the respect for all people as individuals and the frankness regarding the truth of life. Tristan speaks with his heart .. the delights and cruelties of nature and man, are beyond words into the innocent love of the Creator through His Creations. I will never pilot any type of boat (nor would I wish to)nor would I ever sail or desire to. Tristan's books are more than that, more than the challenge to do the same as he. They are about the beauty of Life itself and the value of it. Unfortunatly, Tristan Jones passed away before I 'discovered' his books and I was unable to tell him how his writings, his honest persona awakened my heart. No reader of Tristan's books is disabled. I travel with him and I learn about Life all over again.
A BOOK THAT WAS MY INSPIRATION.......1996-10-26
"Saga of a Wayward Sailor" and "The Incredible Voyage," as
were most of Tristan Jones' books, were an inspiration that
gave me the fortitude to continue building my own boat and
then to sail the south Pacific and Asian waters. I paid
tribute to Tristan by devoting a chapter to him in my most
recent book "At Home In Asia." I was fortunate to have met
him later. I was carrying a copy of the book from Singapore
where it was printed to Tristan who was living in Phuket at
the time. But I was too late. Tristan had died a few days
before. Harold Stephens

Seagulls in My Soup: Further Adventures of a Wayward Sailor
ASIN: 0924486805 |
Book Description
That great storyteller of the sea, Tristan Jones, returns with a new collection of yarns, reminiscences, and adventures never before published in book form. Jones carries readers to the sleepy Spanish ports of the 1950s, the pleasures of Buenos Aires in the last days of Peron, and the damp forests of Southeast Asia. He recounts encounters with Bernard Moitessier and pioneering female sailor Clare Francis, as well as a panoply of memorable characters — among them a sailor who owes his life to a disconnected floodlight and a shadowy crewmember whom Jones unwittingly smuggles into Spain.

A BOOK THAT WAS MY INSPIRATION.......1997-03-15
As were all of Tristan Jones' books, this book too was an inspiration that gave me the fortitude to continue building my own boat and then to sail the south Pacific and Asian
waters. I paid tribute to Tristan by devoting a chapter to him in my book "At Home In Asia," and I wrote about him again in my last book "The Last Voyage: the Story of Schooner Third Sea." I was fortunate to have known Tristan and I think of him often. He was an incredible man. Tristan did add a comment to my last book when he heard of my own person loss before he died. Book Description
Tristan Jones shares more unforgettable encounters and adventures, including a yacht delivery spiced with unexpected machine-gun fire and a mercy mission undertaken on a stormy night. A work of “fictionalized fact,” Encounters of a Wayward Sailor serves as a paean to the many misfits who found refuge in Jones's company over the years.
Customer Reviews:
Is it really Tristan.......2002-05-13
I've read most of Tristan Jone's books, and they all have a distinct writing style. 'Seagulls in my soup', however, has a distinctly different style. We do know from other work that Tristan is a tough nut. He reports the only time that he ever cried was when his eye was knocked out of its socket by a falling gaff and he had to shove the eye back into place. He also, normally, uses as many expletives as non expletives. Yet in this book the writer seems somewhat less than rough around the edges, embarrassed by the usual expletives, over uses adjectives and metaphors that can only be described as cringe material, and in general portrays Tristan as some kind of new aged sensitive type. Having said all this I think the book is fine in its own right, but I don't like the feeling of being conned. I really can't believe that the author is Tristan Jones.
Pearls of Wisdom.......1999-05-15
He must have been in a great mood when he wrote this- the funniest of his books. Not so much about his sailing adventures as the array of characters he is surrounded by. Within every hilarious espisode, Jones is never without the pearls of wisdom which makes him the unique author he is. 5 stars and the north kicked in for good measure.
A great salty yarn, as good as any ever before........1996-09-21
There might be a better Tristan Jones book, but this one ranks
right in there with his best. If you've never read a tale
by this master sailor and adventurer, then start with Saga
of a wayward sailor, or maybe Ice, or even....ah well, what
ever Jones book you read first, you'll be back here,
guaranteed. No one ever has enough of the adventures of this
salty lad. The angels of death visited him not long ago, so
what we have is all we'll ever get. Enjoy, for there'll
not be another like him.

The Incredible Voyage: A Personal Odyssey
ASIN: 0071402519 |
Book Description
He died in 1995, but his nautical adventure books continue to bring entertainment and escape to legions of fans worldwide. He was larger than life, perhaps the most successful sailing writer of the twentieth century. But, as Anthony Dalton's meticulously researched biography reveals, Tristan Jones was not who he said he was.
Wayward Sailor began as an uncomplicated tribute to a great adventurer and writer, but one line of inquiry branched to another, plunging Dalton into a three-year odyssey of his own. With the cooperation of Tristan's friends and supporters, Dalton pursued Tristan's life through correspondence, logbooks, government documents, and interviews worldwide. With each new revelation, Tristan's voyage through life seemed more and more like his greatest adventure.
His real name was Arthur Jones. He was born in Liverpool in 1929, the illegitimate son of a working-class Lancashire girl, and he grew up in orphanages with little education. Too young to see action in the World War II naval battles he would later write about so movingly, he joined the Royal Navy in 1946 and served fourteen unremarkable years.
Arthur Jones then bought an old sailboat and tried his hand at smuggling whiskey cross-Channel. In his early thirties he sailed into a Mediterranean limbo, scraping a living from charters by day and haunting the bars of Ibiza by night. When he was drunk, which was often, he could be loud and obnoxious and had the scars to prove it. He had no family, no attachments, no accomplishments.
Then came a midlife sea change. Arthur Jones looked into his future, imagined greatness, and began to claw his way to it. Having taught himself to sail, he taught himself to write. He was a natural at both. As Tristan Jones, in his midforties, he sailed out of Brazil's Mato Grosso and into a Greenwich Village apartment to write six books in three years and reinvent his past.
The Tristan Jones of his books was born in a storm at sea in 1924 on his father's tramp steamer; was torpedoed three time in epic World War II engagements; completed the first circumnavigation of Iceland; traveled farther north and farther up the Amazon River than any sailor before him; and sailed more than 400,000 miles, 180,000 of them solo. Readers loved his books and crowded his lectures and signings. He had a bard's voice and a street performer's delivery. He had more renown than he could have dreamed.
Having invented a life, Tristan Jones tried to live it. After the amputation of his left leg in 1982 he sailed more than halfway around the world. He lost his right leg in 1991 yet still returned briefly to sea. But as his body failed him, so too did his spirits. It was as if the life from which he'd bodily lifted himself were pulling him down again. He died a bitter man.
Wayward Sailor is the biography Tristan Jones did not want. His books were autobiographical, he said; there was no more to tell. But there was. Wayward Sailor is the last Tristan Jones story and the most incredible one of all: the story of a man who invented himself.
Customer Reviews:
Short Easy Read..............2005-08-02
...that de-bunks the Tristian Jones self created "persona". It is clear that the end of the book was hard to write and researching the latter parts of TJ's life was made harder by his isolation abroad coupled with TJ's recognition that he was in the process of getting "caught out" and so made his life hard to research. This makes the end of the book rather flat - but it is worth it in its own right for the first two thirds.
Well done but not very interesting subject.......2005-05-18
The other reviews say alot so I will only add that Jones was prominent enough to be on Larry King's talk show and feature in the IMAX film Race the Wind. Jones was not a very likeable character but he had a diffucult life with no family, education or money and few friends and he did what he could to survive. He had the makings of a very good writer and produced 16 books and many articles. He concealed the fact that he was gay until the very end of his life, at which time he had lost both his legs to diabetes and was destitute. He accomplished a lot with very little and if you accept his stories as fiction they are good reading. Only those who are really interested in Jones or sailing will enjoy the book as most of it is otherwise very boring.
Dalton accused.......2004-02-28
I find it interesting that someone would go to such great lengths to prove a book wrong. Its seems to me that Dalton had more to loose by not proving Tristan wrong than Tristan would from not doing the things in his books and then writting it as if he did.
Some surprising revelations.......2003-10-01
I've only read four of Tristan Jone's books, with the first being The Incredible Voyage. I wasn't far into the book before it became obvious that there was a lot of fabrication and embellishment going on there. ICE! was even more far-fetched. And as Dalton pointed out in Wayward Sailor, the book ICE! was entirely fiction.
Dalton's book serves to confirm what many of us already knew: Tristan Jones was less than truthful. What I was surprised to hear, though, is that Jones wasn't a very nice person in real life, either. He had far more enemies than friends and spent much of his time as an obnoxious drunk. He was not a trustwothy person; for example, he took "Outward Leg", a boat belonging to its manufacturer, and left it abandoned and trashed before completing the agreed route.
But, nevertherless, I will still buy Tristan's books and plan to read them all. Tristan's writing skills are a bit rough around the edges, but he does tell a great story. The important thing is that the books are entertaining and everything in them must be taken with a grain of salt. I would recommend the books to everyone.
While Tristan Jones greatly exagerated his "record voyages" and did not sail anywhere near the miles he claimed, he was still a great seamen and writer.
Tony Dalton sets the record straight with his new bio........2003-04-30
I have been in contact with Anthony Dalton over the last couple of years while he was writing this biography of Tristan Jones...Some believe every word he writes in his books, some who knew him doubt many of the stories he wrote. Finally, Tony Dalton has traveled all over the world collecting the facts. He has documented the cold truth in this extraordinary researched biography. I must admit that his conclusions are not the ones I wished for, but the truth is very often hard to accept. I have corresponded with many people who knew Tristan personally, and many have told me that what Tony recorded in his new book is true. Regardless, if you want to read some wonderful stories, read some of Tristan Jones books. Fact or fiction, I loved every one.

Customer Reviews:
Concise, thought provoking.......2001-03-12
Mr. Barber grapples with this rather complex subject in a manner as well suited to the professional as the layman. His language is clear, yet thorough, and his organization make this book absolutely indispensible. Five stars, to say the least - although McGraw-Hill should cough up a few ducats and update this valuable resource!
Scholarly and correct!.......1999-08-12
This is a very level-headed and well-researched treatment of a sometimes "grey" and controversial subject. Further, information proved reliable and complete. My only suggestion is that McGraw-Hill should contract the author for a timely update and revision.
Obviously Written by a Dooms-Dayer!.......1999-01-07
I was very disappointed in this book. Not only was much of the information out of date, many of the contacts were unreachable, but my feeling is the author is promoting the dooms-dayer mentality. He must feel the US banks are out to steal his money with the advise he has to offer. I feel this book does more harm than good to the global financial industry.
Some good offshore strategies here........1997-10-09
Barber obviously knows his stuff. Although somewhat dated (due to legistation changes), this book is one of the better on the topic without spending an arm and a leg.
