A Typical Lonely Planet ..........2007-01-09
This book offers everything you expect from a Lonely Planet travel guide - background infos you need to know about the country (Do's, Don'ts, how to get by in India on your own, etc.), sights, restaurant and hotel listings and much more for your trip to Rajasthan.
Like most Lonely Planets, it is a bit thin on history and culture, the description of the sights is sometimes very short.
The Delhi chapter is extensive, though.
You get everything you expect from a LP, but if you are interested in history and Indian culture and religion, buy another book to accompany this LP on your trip.

Book Description
As she writes of her travels through Rajasthan, Royina Grewal takes us behind the exotic fascade of this fabled destination: here is an insider's perceptive account of India's most colourful state. In Rajasthan discusses folk music and architecture, feudal traditions and regional cuisine... Most of all, it focuses on people; from maharajahs to camel trainers, from a female Marxist leader to itinerant snake charmers. In Rajasthan doesn't dwell on the state's glorious past: it looks to the present and the future to convey the excitement and challenges of a region in transition.

Heat and Dust and Palacial Hotels.......2002-02-23
Royina Grewal and her husband Ajit chose to leave Bombay and exchange their metropolitan existence for a rural one in the village of Patan in the Alwar district of north eastern Rajasthan. Royina, who also authored Sacred Virgin about a trip on the Narmada river, and her husband have decided to rebuild a run down farm and using experimental agricultural techniques they are attempting to grow crops on arid land. While her husband tends to the farm and the reconstruction of the house Royina, aware of Rajastahn's reputation for its renowned fortresses and palaces, decides to go on a bit of a tour of the countryside. Its an amusing tour. In Rajasthan, which is one of the least modernised areas of India, it is very rare to see a woman traveling alone so her presence brings out many interesting females who are enthused by her boldness in a land where women are rarely free to choose the course of their own lives. Royina even tours the countryside on the back of a motorcycle in one scene. She claims to feel the nomadic spirit which may be true but she also feels the shopping spirit as well as she makes purchases here and there(including a pair of leather boots that are made for princes) that she is careful to note most Indians cannot afford. This is perhaps one of the problems with this book, Royina only leaves home for an eight week stretch and then writes her book. Other travel writers spend years in India before writing about it. She was born in India, given an education, and one surmises has always had a fair amount of money and freedom(she is careful to note her marriage was not an arranged one). She is one of the privileged westernized few and for her roughing it is a matter of choice and really she is not roughing it for she more often than not stays in the renovated and converted former palaces of the Rajasthan princes with their elaborate gardens. More a vacation than a tour of India I would say. Still she relates a lot of valuable and interesting information along the way and she has some good stories to tell and listens to others tell theirs. She no doubt has a real interest in womens liberation and that theme runs through the book. Nothing gives her greater pleasure than to see a woman asserting her independence(very rare in Rajasthan) and nothing hurts her more than to see a woman or girl in some form of bondage to a husband or small minded community or a religion. Royina places her hopes in the education system and she is touched to see a young tribal girl wearing a school uniform beneath her sari. As Royina says change happens very slowly in India but you have to keep chiseling away. A good book (perhaps designed to encourage tourism to the area) though compared to other Indian travel books(Norman Lewis, William Dalrymple)pretty light fare.
For travellers who want to soak in the stories.......2000-04-22
Royina Grewal's work is rich with imagery and balanced, sensitive observations. She evokes the atmosphere of Rajasthan to a traveller without romanticizing, never straying too far from the lives of the locals. She is always careful not to claim to speak for the people she interviews or let her preconceptions take over their stories. She describes beautifully the scenery, history and customs of various parts of the state. I've learned a lot from this book, not only about Rajasthan, but how to journey through this colorful, changing place as an outsider.
Fantastic mix of the ancient with the modern!.......2000-04-12
Royina Grewal's book is full of the history and grandeur of the Rajputs and the Moghul Emperors, told as the author travels through modern day Rajasthan. The book is so descriptive in parts you can almost feel the heat and dust as if you were there yourself. A wonderful read and highly recommended, especially if you are fascinated with India and her colourful history as much as I am.
Simply great!.......1999-06-27

Can't go without one.......2003-04-03
This is an excellent guide. I saved a lot of money on hotels and transport thanks to it. Its compact size allowed me to put it in my passport pouch. Virtually every foriegn tourist in Rajasthan had one with them.
Lonely Planet's Guide to Rajisthan (Northern India).......2000-10-17
Sarina Singh and Michelle Coxall's guide to Rajisthan is a well written reference for any Western traveller. Detailed information on the history and cultural context of a region or country gives any travel buff an insightful introduction into their travels. In addition, Singh and Coxall include up-to-date information (with convenient currency converters) on places to stay and eat, regional attractions (inluding listings of museums), regional events (such as festivals and fairs), etc. However the book's strength lies in the inclusion of several detiled maps of the region and of major cities in Rajisthan. The maps guide tourists to important locations such as hotels, banks, hospitals, post offices, police stations, etc. The color pictures and the black and white sketches well support the book's narrative and give travelers mnore than a brief glimpse into Northern India and its unique lifestyle. Other travel guides such as Frommers and Lets Go, while offering strong information, are unable to paint as clear a mental picture as the Lonely Planet guides are so adept at.
The guide to Rajisthan is perfect for unseasoned travelers unused to the hustle and bustle of Asia. The book guides tourists through the murky waters of regional customs, while highlighting invaluable cautionary information on health (e.g., food and water), local scams, etc. In addition, the book devotes an entire section to travel and transportation information including useful hints on visa applications, drivers permits, etc. The book conlcudes with a glossary of important terms and a phrase book that helps toursists navigate through simple phrases imperative for travelling through foreign countries.

"Death is certain. Life is not." So begins this commonsensical, infinitely useful workbook that's aimed at helping your survivors handle the requisite legal and household affairs after your death. Author Lynn McPhelimy was inspired to write the book when her parents were both diagnosed with terminal cancer and her father said to her, "'You know when I'm gone, I don't want the yard all dug up when you're looking for the septic tank. So here is this little map.'" It's a book that's not meant just for the elderly or the seriously ill, but for anyone who wants a handy reference with all the necessary "facts of life" in one spot. This way, your family won't be left grieving and scrambling around trying to find your Social Security number, or the name of your insurance company, your lawyer, your second cousin who's supposed to be left your antique lead crystal vase ... you get the picture.
The book includes the nitty-gritty: writing a will, what music you want played at your funeral or memorial service (that is, if you want one), what should be included in your obituary or epitaph, and a hundred other things you've pondered--but never bothered to deal with. Granted, this is scary terrain, but it'll make things a lot less traumatic for your survivors if they feel organized and know things like where you hide the key to your safe deposit box and which bank it's with. It also covers the intricacies of your house, with space for recording the facts you take for granted: where's the damn fuse box? Do you have anything hidden in the attic, under floorboards, or somewhere else? Which sentimental items do you want left with whom or donated to which charity? What are the stories behind those objects that make them sentimental, anyway? And who's that person in the back row of the old family photo that's hidden at the bottom of a shoebox that was stashed in the back of the hallway closet??
In addition to its practicality, this workbook is also meant to be a keepsake, with space for writing down memories of important life events and things you've always meant to accomplish, the things you've always meant to tell people. In this way, The Checklist of Life also functions as a psychological kick in the pants, inspiring you to actually get out and do those things you've promised yourself you'd get around to, "one of these years." --Erica Jorgensen
Customer Reviews:
Amazing Blessing .......2007-02-18
This book was the most incredible blessing when we lost a loved one recently. The time of a death, there are so many emotions, and so many decisions to make -- the guidance of this book, filled in in advance, is an amazing blueprint to make that transitional time early in grieving so much easier. Not only does it offer a place to record vital information about insurance policies, bills, assets, safe deposit boxes, etc -- but it also includes places to write to those you love, write stories you remember of your parents, write accounts of your children's early days.
So, you see, it creates not only a black and white fact organizer, but a flesh and blood gift of the heart to those left behind. Invaluable.
Be Prepared ~ With a Smile!.......2007-01-09
This is the most incredible book! It helps one to prepare to leave this world. In a time of greiving, family and friends wont want to wonder what your wishes are ~ they will know! The book contains everything from where you hid those "special" papers to the words you would like spoken at your final service... OR even if you want a service. It has lots of room for you to fill out your thoughts and wishes to your family and friends. There is a section that allows you to express your hopes and dreams for your children. One of the most moving things in the book was: "IF you were told you had thirty minutes to live, who would you call and what would you say?" It makes you think about the things in life that go unsaid. It helps to make closure easier. I gave this book to my friends for the holidays. It made sound a bit odd, but after reading the wonderful quotes, the ease of filling in the blanks and knowing that you are making your "leaving" easier ~ it was a much appreciated gift. Don't hesitate to get your life in order... the clock is ticking. :-) Thank you Lynn for a WONDERFUL insightful book!
Thinking Ahead.......2006-05-12
I saw this book at my brother-in-law's and was impressed with his foresightedness. We all put off thinking about our own demise, but filling out the information in this book is the right thing to do.
It has fill-in-the-blank forms to capture all sorts of information for your family or whoever has to handle your affairs after you go. Think about the basics (real estate, insurance, investments), but also think about the many details that right now are only in your head.
I particularly liked the Hiding Places section. That covers where you tucked the special jewelry, how to get the safe combination and other nitty gritty details.
Some possessions may be special to you, but others don't know the story behind the items. The book has space to list those and the meaning, so your heirs won't chuck out precious family momentos.
There's a place to list special dates and to write what you want in your obituary. It encourages you to write a letter to your child and place it in the book for them to read after your death.
Really this is a book that every family should have on hand (and filled out). Give your spouse or family the facts and feelings to better cope with a trying time.
Invaluable information.......2001-08-14
After losing my mother in April, I realized just how much more difficult it would have been had I not had this book. She spelled out everything I needed to know to fullfill her wishes and to make the process easier for me. EVERYONE, no matter the age, should have their own copy to assist their family once they are gone. It's a peaceful feeling knowing you've taken care of your family member exactly the way they would have liked.
In the Checklist of Life: A Working Book to Help You Live &.......2001-02-28
I found this book on my Daddy's desk last week when he died. Without it we would have been utterly LOST. I came up here to Amazon to purchase this book for my desk - it was indispensible, and once again my GOOD Father has shown me the RIGHT way to help loved ones. C.

Another book by a lawyer who seems to have written this book to help promote his legal practice........2007-09-25
Not a bad book on estate planning. Of course, the quality of a book always depends on whether it focuses sufficiently on the needs and desires of its intended target audience. The author says the target audience he was aiming at when writing this book was business owners. Since the book only included chapters 6 (Special considerations for the business owner) and 21 (Family limited partnerships) regarding business owners, I must say that the book missed its mark.
In my humble opinion the book covered its subject so broadly that I'm not sure it could be said to have focused on any one target audience. And this is not a good thing for a short book when you consider that estate planning is complex enough to have its own graduate law degree.
The book was split into the following six sections:
1. Estate planning philosophies
2. Estate planning goals
3. Estate planning tools
4. Taking charge of your estate planning
5. Appendix
6. Glossary
And in the third section the following estate planning tools were discussed adequately:
Wills
Trusts
Life insurance
Will substitutes
Gifts
Family limited partnerships
I did not like the way the author kept referring to the federal estate tax to be a "death tax." Estate taxes are a "wealth transfer tax." Nothing more; nothing less. And the way he referred to asset appreciation as being something akin to income was off the mark, too. If asset appreciation was income, then it could be taxed as income. And asset appreciation is not taxable. Only gains on sale of assets are taxable income.
And I had a problem when the author commented that estate planning is about distributing assets after you die. I believe estate planning (more accurately described as estate tax planning) is about organizing your affairs during your life so your assets will go to those you want without paying any more estate taxes than the law requires you to pay. Estate administration is about DISTRIBUTING assets after you die.
If one of the intents of the book was to help the reader understand estate planning philosophy, then this objective was probably achieved. But why didn't the title of the book reflect this intent? I must say, I very much liked the way the author discussed the eight most common approaches to estate planning using the different TV sitcom families.
I would have liked the book much more if it had minimized sections 1 and 2 and greatly expanded sections 3 through 6. Then of course, if the focus of the book were to emphasize estate planning philosophy, then greatly expand sections 1 and 2 and eliminate most of the material in sections 3 through 6.
A common problem in books about estate planning is the use of the exact estate tax exemption amounts. Using them dates a book quickly. I would have liked to have seen the exact amounts left out and the discussion made in more general and theoretical terms. And I definitely had no interest in reading Chapter 30 which included mere speculation. 3 stars!

Short, sweet, and to the point!.......2007-09-29
[Book review I wrote for an earlier edition of this book.]
After reading this book you can probably be an executor for an estate without hiring an attorney (assuming no legal documents have to be prepared or filed in court). I found this book in the reference section of the Westfield Pubic Library (NJ) along with its companion book: A Family Guide to Wills, Funerals & Probate (ISBN: 081604550X). This book was written for an executor to read, and the companion book concerned much of the same material but for the decedent to read before he or she dies.
I thought this book was great, and that it will help an executor gain a grasp of his or her responsibilities when administering and closing a decedent's estate. It is written without legal jargon. Have you ever had to administer an estate and gone to an attorney for help? Did you expect the attorney to tell you about your duties and delegate as much of the work to you as possible? And did you find the attorney did a lot of work you think you could and should have done? Well, if so, then this book probably could have helped you talk to the attorney and have more worked delegated to you.
This book is as comprehensive as it needs to be to educate an executor about his or her duties. When those duties can be complicated, the authors explain the basics so an attorney can be consulted to provide legal services. Keep in mind that many estates can be settled without any legal help being needed. Thus, I recommend an executor read this book before ever seeking an attorney for help, guidance, or services.
The edition of the book I read was hardbound and very pretty. There was an index of terms in the back of the book. However, I would have liked the book better if there had been a glossary of terms back there, too. Don't worry that the book doesn't have your state in its title. It is written so it is applicable to executors in all 50 states.
I found the book to be deficient in covering (failed to cover) the various tax forms (federal estate & income; state estate & income) that must be filed. They mention them, but I would have liked the book better if more had been written about them. Filing the tax returns is often the most complicated aspect of doing executor work. Most of the other things just take time. 5 stars!

Book Description
State-by-state listings and explanations of municipal landscape ordinances
In U.S. Landscape Ordinances, Buck Abbey furnishes landscape architects, planners, land-use attorneys, and students with a much-needed resource. This state-by-state presentation demystifies the complex planning laws and ordinances that determine landscape design parameters for more than 300 American cities. The author highlights sections of each ordinance that pertain to landscape architecture, boils the legalese down to plain English, explains the law's main purpose and regulatory function, and spells out the practical implications from a design perspective.
With the help of more than fifty diagrams and drawings that clarify complex spatial concepts, U.S. Landscape Ordinances reviews the entire spectrum of green laws currently on the books, including ordinances that cover:
- Parking lots and vehicular use areas
- Landscape buffers and screens
- Street tree plantings
- Open space design
- Irrigation
- Land clearing and building sites
The product of ten years of painstaking research and analysis, U.S. Landscape Ordinances is a unique and invaluable tool for professionals in landscape design and municipal planning. It also offers a deep reservoir of information for students, municipal legislators, community activists, and anyone interested in understanding or developing a community's landscape ordinances.
Book Description
"The chief strength of this volume is the comprehensive coverage. I can't cover all of these issues with questionnaires in my survey class and would welcome a text that can walk students more comprehensively through the process. The coverage is accurate and the authors do a good job of pointing out the various disagreements among survey researchers about proper survey protocol. At the same time, I appreciate it that there is some closure on some of these debates with respect to recommendations made by the authors." --Kevin Thompson, Department of Sociology, North Dakota State University Looking for a single resource that can provide the basic tools for conducting self-administered and mail surveys? How to Conduct Self-Administered and Mail Surveys is the answer with its thorough descriptions of the various types of self-administered questionnaires and its careful explanations of the circumstances under which each type of questionnaire can be most appropriately used. The authors show you how to develop questions and format a user-friendly questionnaire; to pretest, pilot test, and revise questionnaires; and to write advance and cover letters that motivate and increase response rates. They describe follow-up procedures for nonrespondents from tracking to amount and timing of follow-ups and show you how to estimate personnel requirements and the costs of a self-administered or mailed survey. The authors also demonstrate how to process, edit, and code questionnaires as well as keep records and fully document the development and administration of the questionnaire and the data collected with it.
