As the name implies, Frommer's Irreverent Guides border on the brazen, offering up tidbits such as home addresses for Fats Domino and Anne Rice, the best "dives worth a drive," finding "sexual hardware" in a store with a sense of humor, and where to meet the giant webbed-footed rodents known as nutria. This guide includes the usual traveler's details, as well. In addition to finding out the coolest places in the Big Easy to stay, you'll have answers to interesting questions like, What is zydeco? Who is a true French Creole? And, where do you find voodoo? Grab this book and do as the author urges: visit New Orleans now--it's getting less authentic and more "big-citified" every day. --Kathryn True

      Book Description

Looking for a travel guide that goes where other guides fear to tread? One that rides roughshod over ad-copy puffery to smartly deliver the real scoop on a destination's sites and attractions? One that dares to be honest, hip, and fun? Look no more. Frommer's Irreverent Travel Guides are wickedly irreverent, unabashedly honest, and downright hilarious, and provide an insider's perspective on which attractions are overrated tourist traps and which are the secret gems that locals love. You'll get the lowdown on restaurants, lodging, and shopping, and even find out what the locals think of you. "Like being taken around by a savvy local," said the New York Times. "Hipper and savvier than other guides," concurred Diversion magazine. Never shy about confronting the issues, the Irreverents are guides to real travel in the real world.

Let the good times roll with Frommer's Irreverent Guide to New Orleans, the travel guide that unabashedly gives the insider perspective on one of America's most popular destinations. You'll discover where the locals go for real gumbo, how to eat mudbugs, why you should avoid at all costs during Mardi Gras, and how to survive anyway if you just can't help yourself. Learn why burial tombs were built aboveground, and why so many people buried in the local cemeteries died in one year. We'll direct you to favorite psychics, voodoo parlors, and zydeco dance halls and away from the touristed nightclubs locals avoid like the plague (did someone say Planet Hollywood?). The Irreverent Guide to New Orleans will show you the real New Orleans of hothouse music and romance, and clue you in on where to have the most fun in the ultimate party town.

3 out of 5 stars Too much is missing.......2005-01-30

After buying this book I began appending it with my own notes gleaned from the internet, my own experience, and other books. After awhile I ran out of margins - in other words there is allot of information that should be in this book but it's missing. This is especially true in the Dining section. Although no guidebook should cover all restruants in a city, all should cover the notable ones.

      4 out of 5 stars Great guidebook.......2001-10-18

This guidebook provides some great background history and color to New Orleans. Great restaurant recommendations with quality information. The maps, however, were a bit lacking.

5 out of 5 stars Quick and easy guide on where to go in the Big Easy!.......2001-02-21

This isn't one of those exhaustive travel books that tells you everything there is to know about a place. Instead, the authors selectively present everything you actually need to know. The dining section was particularly helpful. It wasn't an exhaustive list of restaurants, but it did give you a choice of a few places in each category. The authors were also good about pointing out where the locals go and warning you about the places that are for tourists only. Even better, they distinguish between the tourist places that are all hype and those that are still worth seeing. The maps were helpful, and the book is small enough to fit into a purse or pocket. You will eat well and have a great time in New Orleans with nothing but this book to guide you.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, useful guidebook.......2000-08-25

This is one of the better guides. I like they way they are set up, chapters covering one subject, (ex: accomodations) then an alphabetized list and map of all the sites. I use this book a lot when I need to look up an address or phone number.

It could have more, but works perfectly well as it is.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing Irreverent About It..........2000-08-12

While this is a perfectly adequate guidebook (it will give you the address for Brennan's, the current room rate for the Maison Dupuy and the phone number to call for a Swamp Tour), it does itself a disservice by claiming to be irreverent. There is nothing even faintly irreverent about this book. It's basically cribbed from Frommer's non-irreverent guides, thereby shorter and less informative.

International Accounting Standards Explained is an introduction to IASC and to the requirements of the IAS. It outlines how the standards are used on a daily basis by companies in preparation of their financial statements.

It offers a detailed description of the International Accounting Standards Committee and how it is structured. It examines the use of IAS from a practice orientation and looks at the main components of the financial statements, including questions of recognition and measurement of key financial statement items.

There is also a discussion of the IASC Framework for the Preparation and Presentation of Financial Statements. The framework provides a foundation for the development of new standards and is used as reference for applying IAS in the absence of detailed application guidance.

                Book Description

Financial services businesses are leading the way towards the global economy, yet they are in a state of turbulence. Where financial services are today, other industries such as electronics, computers, telecommunications, and air transport will be in the near future. This book describes why this is happening and how companies are tackling the challenge of this volatile environment. The first part describes the causes of this volatility through new government regulations, shifts in customer behavior, the impact of new technology, and more aggressive global competition. The second part of the book contains case study material from international companies including managing the portfolio of a global financial services organization and corporate development for an international bank. Driving Strategic Change in Financial Services is an essential tool for understanding the global climate in financial services and for mastering the task of developing an international company. Executives, policy-makers, and managers in banking and other markets such as electronic commerce will find valuable insights and useful case material. Features

                    Book Description

As investment capital has shown increasing disregard for national boundaries, the flow of information on financial markets has become both more complex and more problematic. At the same time, the speed with which markets now respond to events and financial conditions in all parts of the world makes accurate, up-to-the-moment information a crucial element in the investment and accounting picture. This book explores some of the most important effects of information on world financial markets. Written by an international group of specialists, it takes the form of a dialogue. Each of the five chapters dealing with specific topics is followed by the comments of another writer who offers a slightly different perspective. The first chapter examines the effect of enhanced public disclosure on the welfare of participants in the marketplace. The second chapter provides a framework for analyzing the effects of the globalization of information, particularly the ways in which it influences rates of real interest among countries. Subjects addressed in the chapters that follow include compensating for imperfect information in foreign currency investment and the impact of financial forecasts on stock prices. An authoritative treatment that clarifies some of the most complex issues surrounding the globalization of capital investment, this book will be of particular value to international financial analysts and investment advisers.

                          Book Description

In this age of international terrorism and international economic contagion, it is clear that "globalization" in its broadest sense - i.e., the "breaking down of barriers"- is often a double-edged sword. The world economy of the early twenty-first century offers substantial growth potential and strategic benefits for firms, but it also entails much risk, which must be measured and managed effectively. Consequently, business in today's world must constantly be alert to opportunities afforded by improving technology and financial market integration as they seek to develop successful risk management programs.

Often viewed as a narrow field focusing on derivatives or insurance, risk management is in fact a much broader discipline, encompassing operational strategies as well as the financial and/or insurance decisions of the firm. This is particularly true for complex business enterprises operating in the international market.

In view of the importance of risk management in practice as well as in the academic literature, the Fox School of Business and Management at Temple University invited leading scholars of finance, risk management, and international business to examine the current status and future direction of global risk management as a discipline.

The conference was held on April 20, 2001 at the Fox School under the auspices of the Institute of Global Management Studies (IGMS) and the Advanta Center for Financial Services Studies, as the Second Annual International Business Forum sponsored by the IGMS.

The conference was designed to be international in perspective and comprehensive in coverage. It included discussions of concepts, measurement, and management of various types of risk. Each speaker was asked to make a presentation on one topic within the broad theme that not only would address the state of the art but also would provide insights into specific emerging issues within the chosen topic. Much of this volume is a collection of articles presented at that conference. It is hoped that this collection will provide a new research agenda for the risk management discipline, as well as a source of reference for scholars, practitioners, and graduate students.

                            Book Description

In recent years intellectual property rights (IPR) took on major significance as an element of global trade regulation. The Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) at the World Trade Organization (WTO) obliges member countries to protect patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets. This mandate has great impact in developing nations, which had generally weaker IPR standards prior to TRIPS and subsequent agreements. This emerging international regime for protecting IPR raises thorny questions about how the new rules of the game might affect fundamental economic processes, including innovation, trade and economic development.
The governments of many developing countries see the new regime as excessively protectionist and an impediment to their development prospects. They perceive potential problems with abusive monopoly practices, high costs for new medicines, and limited access to scientific and educational materials. Indeed, it is ironic that during a time of significant global liberalization of trade and investment barriers, the IPR system may be raising restrictions on access to the very technology flows that could substantiate the gains from greater trading opportunities.
However, expansion of the global IPR regime also bears potential for economic gains. It is possible that the new system will encourage additional investments in R&D and innovation. The ongoing internationalization of commercial R&D could be accelerated. Such investments might increasingly meet the medical, agricultural, and educational needs of people in poor countries. The regime could also improve the mechanisms under which new information goods are transferred across borders, expanding the possibilities for fruitful diffusion of technologies.
The implications of these reforms will be far-reaching, complex and hard to predict. It is possible, for example, that stronger patents will simply redistribute incomes across nations, generating significant winners and losers without much overall innovation gains. It is also possible that R&D investments could become more concentrated among the developed and newly industrialized economies but bypass the poorer locations. Ultimately, all such questions need close theoretical and empirical scrutiny.
In this volume several economists who are closely involved in such analysis offer comprehensive and analytical literature surveys of the central questions regarding the linkages between intellectual property protection, international trade and investment, and economic growth. The authors range widely over their particular areas of inquiry. At the international level the contributions cover such questions as policy coordination in IPR, dispute resolution, markets for technology and technology transfer, international innovation, parallel trade, and economic development. On the regulatory side there are thoughtful reviews of the legal foundations of IPR, knowledge creation and the public domain, networks and standards, competition policy, access to essential medicines, and agricultural research.
The contributions are aimed primarily at economists, who will find ambitious and up-to-date treatments of the most central areas of IPR and globalization. The chapters analyze recent literature, discuss shortcomings and key findings, and indicate where additional research is urgently needed. However, scholars of other disciplines, particularly in law, political science, and international relations, will find much of interest as well. The literature reviews also constitute a valuable resource for students in all these fields who wish to learn more about the economics of international IPR.

                              Book Description

To help global managers and international business scholars understand the multiple influences of globalization and digital technology on global financial management, Carrada-Bravo has dispensed with traditional distinctions between corporate and global finance in order to bring a much-needed coherence to the practice and study of global finance. Throughout this well-structured and highly practical volume, he emphasizes the delivery of business experiences associated with the financial interaction between entities of two or more regions of the world via the Internet or other form of electronic communication. Knowledge of global financial issues in this context will help practitioners and academics alike judge how external shocks may affect the economy of a country or the financial picture of a corporation. Moreover, a firm understanding of global finance in the digital age will provide guidance in many decision-making scenarios, from how to profit from the disturbances associated with variations in currency to how to take advantage of technological changes in global communication. The author also suggests ways to isolate institutions from the harmful effects of such external shocks. He provides extensive coverage by including the financial experiences of corporations from the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
