Don't buy this.......2007-04-11

I don't write reviews, it usually bores me but this time i thought i had some responsibility in writing my impressions about this book.
I'll be brief, this book is simply useless. It talks about a lot of worthless details which don't get you anywhere but never explains the basis mechanisms of ETFs. I am writing a thesis on ETFs so i read a lot of ETF manuals and I can honestly say this book was the worst by far. I'm not saying it doesnt give you any info, but I think you can find every info of this book in any other ETF book. Moreover, it's the most expensive, I really don't get how the author dare asking so much for such an incomplete and irrelevant work.

Now this was my contribution to the Amazon community, I hope i prevented some people of wasting 50$ ...

A Good Reference For QQQ's Investors!.......2002-12-31

Here's a book for the tech investor who wants to know what the different companies in the NASDAQ 100 do. There's a simple company profile, earning projection, revenue growth chart, and key financial ratios.

Since all of these things can be gotten over the Internet these days, the main benefit of this book is that it is in book form and you can pick it up for stock ideas in the tech area (except for IBM and HPQ).

The only thing that I found interesting was the author's Top 25 Picks for 2002-2003. This list includes all the big cap tech stocks except QCOM and has some comments about each choice. There's also an interesting discussion about the QQQ's and the Rydex funds and how it might be better for most investors to simply buy these instead of riding the ups and downs of these highly-volatile individual issues.

I would like to have seen a more lively format, but I guess this book wasn't meant for my entertainment. If you want to buy individual stocks within the NASDAQ 100, you will need more current information in addition to what is presented here.

The Bottom Line: It's a handy reference.

Description:
In this case study in knowledge engineering, data mining, and behavioral finance, we implement a variation of the bull flag stock charting heuristic using a template matching technique from pattern recognition to identify abrupt increases in volume in the New York Stock Exchange Composite Index. Such volume increases are found to signal subsequent increases in price under certain conditions during the period from 1981 to 1999, the Great Bull Market. A 120-trading-day history of price and volume is used to forecast price movement at horizons from 20 to 100 trading days.

From the author: Following the 1987 stock market crash, trading controls or circuit breakers were implemented in financial markets to moderate extreme volatility. However, the effectiveness of circuit breakers on the operation of these markets is disputed. While some argue that circuit breakers curb the effects of overreaction in markets and restore confidence, others argue that these trading interruptions merely delay price movements to later periods or to other markets. This paper examines the effect of changes in circuit breaker rules on the market's expectation of future volatility. The results have policy implications and suggest that the circuit breaker rule changes have no effect on expected volatility.

Description:
This study investigates the impact of the scheduled Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meetings and the scheduled macroeconomic news releases on stock market uncertainty. For that purpose, the behavior of the implied volatility of the S&P100 index (VIX) is investigated around the FOMC meeting days and around the employment, producer price index (PPI), and consumer price index (CPI) reports. The results support the hypothesis that implied volatility increases prior to the scheduled news and drops after the announcement. The results reveal that investors regard the FOMC meetings as highly significant for valuing stocks as hypothesized. Of the macroeconomic news releases, the employment report has the largest impact on uncertainty, whereas investors regard the information content of the PPI and CPI together as significant.

A Four-Point Model for Transformational Leadership.......2000-10-10

The authors of this book provide an easy to implement model of transformational leadership based on four points, which they call the four I's. The focus of their full-range leadership model is a long-term transformational change, as opposed to short-term transactional models. The author's model reflects the importance of leadership and vision in creating organizational "buy-in," driving competitive change, and creating self-sustaining organizations through the growth of like-minded leaders.

I found this book to be well-written and easy to read. The authors apply the model to a wide-range of organizational situations. The only limitation to this book that I found, was a question that I posed to the model, which questions the validity of the model if the culture does nor support the leadership and vision. I suppose though, that the authors would counter argue that if the culture did not support the leadership and vision, that the basis of their model, the four I's were not being implmented properly.
