Twenty years after he left the U.S. Senate and 17 years after his death, many people have forgotten Idaho's Frank Church. In his day, Church was a nationally recognized U.S. Senator. In this book, Bill Hall looks back at one of the milestones of Church's career, his late campaign for President in 1976 in which he won five primaries and caucuses.
For those who like politics, this book will take you behind the scenes of Chuuch's Senate office and campaign structure. Hall worked for Church in '76, and he recalls in detail the hopes, dreams, egos, conflicts, ambition, and exhaustion that are a part of any bid for the nation's highest office.
Besides Church, interesting figures explored in the book are his wife and great supporter, Bethine, longtime friend and political aide Carl Burke, and his Senate chief of staff, Verda Barnes, one of the most powerful women on Capitol Hill during that time.

A great book for anyone with an interest of the life and stories of Josua Slocum.I have read & Re-read "Sailing Alone,Around The World". A natural extention, "Alone At Sea",discibes "situations",not before written about.

What a waste of money! As it turns out, this guy writes a lot of books about subjects of which he knows very little about. I recommend staying away from anything written by Ragnar Benson!!!!!
Good Subject, Little Meat.......2006-03-08
This book is a primer on interrogation tactics used by police, detectives, and military. It written at a low level, and would greatly benefit all middle school students (especially minorities) so that they do not needlessly confess to authorities. However, there is no reference to actual police and military training manuals, not even a bibliography.
The bottom line: police spend four years in college learning to manage interrogations by application of stress, trickery, and outright lies, all of which are perfectly legal. Unless you are a highly trained prisoner-of-war, you have no chance against them. Your only hope is to refuse to play. Don't even engage in casual conversation, as the skillfull interviewer will use that to lead you where he wants you to go! Talking to the police or other authority is as dumb as getting into a gunfight with them; either of these will end up with you the loser.
As the distinction between military and police are blurred under the pretext of U.S. Department of Fatherland Security, interrogations of suspects are going to get a lot nastier, and civil rights will frequently be set aside in the interests of the Fatherland. Therefore, it is important for young people to be educated on effective resistance methods, and to be vaccinated against police pressure tactics.
Nothing Useful.......2003-08-01
I was hoping for a book that would give away all the secrets to interrogation and making people spill the beans. Instead I got an arrogant sermon on how important and powerful the author thinks private investigators and security guards are. He claims that anyone who does not talk to an investigator can be forced to give deposed testimony (total bull). Being an ex-private investigator, the author's tips are worthless. I want a book that exposes professional interrogation training like the Reid Technique and heuristical interrogation techniques. This book is a complete waste of money.
Not With This Book, Save Your $$$.......2003-05-26
I was looking forward to reading this book. But once I started, I was sorry I bought this book.
This book promises a lot. But does not really deliver on the promises. When I finished reading the book, I was not convinced that I knew more about either conducting "interviews" or surving "interrogations."
Each chapter ends with "Tips for potential witnesses." This by far is the most useful section of the book. If you read these "tips," you will know the book. This is the first "tip" of the book: "1. What should you do if you don't wish to talk to an investigator? An obvious but incorrect answer is to refuse to do so." page 19. Yes, Mr. Benson does go into more detail about this question.
The book is organized thus: Introduction; 1 What Makes a Successful Investigator?; 2 The Fine Arts of Listening and Observing; 3 What are Pretexts and How Are They Used?; 4 Civil vs. Criminal Proceedings and Rules of Evidence; 5 Criminal Investigations; 6 Once Witnesses are in the Legal Pipeline; 7 Surviving a Cross-Examination; 8 Military Interrogations; Conclusion. There is no bibliography.
If this topic interests a reader, then see if you can find the book, "Ask Me No Questions, I'll Tell You No Lies." The reader will learn more than Bensons' tome.
Not a good read.......2003-04-16
I really didn't learn anything from this book. Its focus was centered around Private Investigators use of pretext's. Pretexts are lies that are told to solicit information out of an interviewee. They can range from, "You will be in trouble if you don't help me," to the opposite, "You know, I did the same thing. It's alright to admit to the crime." If that makes sense, then don't read this book and save yourself [the money].

There is no other book currently available that presents such a complete yet easy-to-understand explanation for the nonlawyer of legal procedures in the military. A reader can find out about the jurisdiction of military law and who is subject to it--some will be surprised to learn that military retirees are covered by the laws--who makes up the court, what are considered to be crimes and examples of those who have been convicted, along with countless other facts that will prove useful to those seeking information of a unique segment of law in the United States.

An Excellent Start.......2007-09-17
Mr. Davidson's book is a must for anyone trying to understand the differences between civilian criminal law and military criminal law. Neatly arranged and written in an easy-to understand format, it's 152 pages of text manages to be informative without overwhelming the reader. I'm using it in my introduction to military justice (college) class, and the students have found it to be easy to understand. Well done!
An excellent introduction to the subject........2006-05-21
Davidson's book is an excellent introduction to a fascinating subject, (at least for a civillian criminal lawyer). Well written with short, concise, but interesting explinations about a various aspects of the UCMJ, including its development, jurisdiction, and a brief overview of the whole code. My only criticisim is that it is a little too short, the author left me wanting much more, like an expliantion of the appeal process, and more information about pre-trial procedure. Not only for lawyers, but an interesting read for anybody interested in the subject.

Most Tax protesters have ended up paying high penalties or worse, in jail.
Left-wingers are buying this book like crazy to show their support for "peace". But I thought they were in favor of taxes. I guess when someone takes their money and spends it on a program they don't like, its wrong. But when someone with a different political view wants taxes to stop funding left-wing causes they call it selfishness. Real hypocrites. Pay your taxes, stay out of jail. If you're really upset, try voting sometime...

An Overlooked Avenue for Political Dissent.......2001-12-16
In light of recent events (9/11) this book is more valuable than it has ever been in its 20 years of print. As the Bush administration declares war on terrorism (a term they refuse to define)the military industrial complex stands to develope beyond its already ridiculous proportions, and human rights stand to be squandered to the back of our national conscience. Already the U.S. Ambassador to Bolivia has claimed that any type of civil protest in Bolivia is to be considered terrorism, as such protest stands to cripple the U.S. drug war effort in said country. The war on terrorism will inevitably become the excuse to continue U.S. imperialism, and restrain civil liberties and human rights worldwide.
This book explains how many people have refused to support such violence and military action, by refusing to pay their taxes, and redistributing them to peaceful and humanitarian organizations. This book offers an in depth look at the history of war tax resistance as a form of political protest, its values and its accomplishments. It explains the reasons why someone might choose to pursue such action, and what one might expect from the government in response.
I encourage everyone to pick up this book, if not to use it, to at least be familiar with the options of political protest described within, and the reasons that drive U.S. citizens to resist war taxes.
