Book Description
The life of Laureano Gómez (1889-1965), Colombia's combative Conservative politician and reviled public figure, serves as the backdrop for this modern history of one of the hemisphere's least understood nations. Tracing the complex process of development in Colombia, James Henderson explores the civil violence that defined the Gómez era even as the country experienced economic growth unparalleled in the rest of the Americas.

Book Description
Strange as it may seem today, William Clark-best known as the American explorer who joined Meriwether Lewis in leading an overland expedition to the Pacific-has many more claims to fame than his legendary Voyage of Discovery, dramatic and daring though that venture may have been. Although studies have been published on virtually every aspect of the Lewis and Clark journey, Wilderness Journey is the first comprehensive account of Clark's lengthy and multifaceted life.
"No one is better able to treat in a comprehensive way William Clark's public life than William Foley. Foley knows, and has skillfully used, the massive store of archival materials. He has written a balanced, solidly researched biography of a major American figure. The great strength of this biography is Foley's unparalleled command of the sources and his broad understanding of the West in the early Republic. William Clark shaped the early West and was shaped by it."-James P. Ronda
"Bill Foley's book on William Clark deserves a place alongside Stephen Ambrose's Undaunted Courage on every scholar's bookshelf. It comprises a thorough and lively tour through the life of one of the most complex and vivid personalities ever produced in the United States."-Bob Moore
"Bill Foley has written a compelling biography of William Clark. It is significant because it provides a fresh look at the life of an important public servant who is primarily known as the partner of Meriwether Lewis and co-leader of the Corps of Discovery. Foley expertly traces Clark's early life, and he separates his leadership and achievements from Lewis's with clarity and insight, thereby enabling the reader to better understand his role in the expedition across the continent. Foley's study of William Clark should serve as the standard biography of the man for at least a generation."-R. Douglas Hurt
Customer Reviews:
The stable side of the Lewis and Clark expedition.......2007-10-06
As a reader of "Undaunted Courage", the Steven Ambrose historical biography of Meriwether Lewis and his patron, Thomas Jefferson, I felt like I received only part of the picture of the expedition that opened the Louisiana Purchase to U.S. interests. This book completes the picture. Clark was the steady, get-the-job-done, go-to guy, who complemented the mercurial Lewis. Where Lewis made only occasional journal entries, Clark is the principal source of our non-botanical/zoological information because he reliably performed the journaling function. The only criticism I would have of the book is the repeated drubbing of Clark as a slave holder and his perceived mistreatment of York. It seems that Foley feels he has to apologize for Clark, who lived in a different age with a very different view of slavery. Once would have been enough.
Looking for Lewis and Clark.......2007-02-08
The author skillfully blends history and biography to provide an absorbing look at American frontier during the early to mid 19th century,
as well as a fresh narrative of the Lewis and Clark explorations. Foley
renders Clark in a sympathetic light, even when accounting for his often
harsh treatment of African-Americans and Native Americans. A well-researched and well-written book.
A Fine Biography of the "Other" Co-Commander of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.......2006-01-22
It's about time someone wrote a modern full biography of William Clark (1770-1838). The second-in-command of the legendary Lewis and Clark Expedition deserves a much fuller discussion than heretofore available. Born in Virginia in 1770, Clark was closely tied to frontier military and Indian affairs throughout his life. He served with Gen. Anthony Wayne at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794, and between 1803 and 1806 he and Meriwether Lewis led the military expedition to explore the Louisiana Purchase to the Pacific Ocean. In 1813 Clark became Missouri Territorial governor, working during the War of 1812 to secure the frontier from British-incited Indian attacks. When Missouri was admitted to the Union in 1822, Clark was appointed by Congress superintendent of Indian affairs, serving until his death in 1838. He was fair, humane, and honest in his dealing with the western tribes.
This book is an exceptionally well researched and written life of Clark, whose career, at least in its later stages, outstripped that of Meriwether Lewis. It is must reading for anyone interested in the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the settlement of the trans-Mississippi West. It replaces as the central work on the subject the biography written by Jerome O. Steffen, "William Clark: Jeffersonian Man on the Frontier" (University of Oklahoma Press, 1977).
The first comprehensive biography of Clark's entire life.......2004-10-10
William Clark is best known as the American explorer who joined Meriwether Lewis in heading an overland expedition to the Pacific: but as William Foley demonstrates in Wilderness Journey: The Life Of William Clark, how William Clark has many more claims to fame than his explorations with Meriwether Lewis. Studies have appeared on the two, but this is the first comprehensive biography of Clark's entire life, revealing his service as a soldier, Indian diplomat, and his involvement in US politics and policy-making in the West. College-level audiences will find Wilderness Journey a fascinating biography of a multi-faceted man.

Customer Reviews:
great book for those in finance.......2006-06-20
This book is great if you're in the field of finance. This is not for the average consumer looking for investment advice. I've been in corporate financial planning and analyis for the past five years and always wondered how equity analysts built their models. This books will give you insight into their thinking and also give enough detail to build your own models. I would have rated it five stars if the book included a CD with his examples in Excel. The author does have website where you can download sample models.
for SELL-SIDE analysts only.......2006-01-14
I bought this book based on the strong reviews as a complement to Damodaran's classic on valuation, but felt disappointed.
To qualify my comments: First, I am not a sell-side analyst, and secondly, I haven't finished the book. After about 50 pages, I threw in the towel.
My first stylistic objection to the book is its low content density. There is tremendous repetition and examples are trotted out in excruciating detail, even where the conclusions are fairly obvious. For example, on p. 34: "At competitive equilibrium, the firm can identify no incremental investment opportunities likely to generate returns in excess of capital costs. Competitive equilibrium is often defined as a condition in which investment opportunities generate returns equal to capital costs, but existing investments continue to earn abnormal rates." To me these two sentences are already redundant. But in case you still didn't get it, further DOWN on the SAME PAGE: "...This situation is called economic equilibrium, or economic parity. What does equilibrium mean? When returns are forced down to capital costs, then economic rents and/or abnormal earnings disappear and no further incentive to enter the business exists".
But the most frequently repeated point of the first two chapters, is best summed up on p. 19: "As I say many times in the coming pages [and he's not kidding, there], equity analysis is not prophecy; it's opinion. It was never meant to be objective description, but it is strong advocacy." If you're the sell-side analyst, having to "dress up a pig" to help your firm gain some banking business, this book might offer some ideas. But where does this leave the consumer of such analysis? "It's the investor's job to 'diversify' by considering a variety of analysts' positions." (p.9)
I think better advice for the investor might be to learn how to perform sound analysis themselves. For that, I recommend Damodaran's book. I lost my faith in this book's intent to provide balanced (let alone predictive) analysis.
One of the Best.......2005-11-01
There are reams and reams of investment valuation books on the market -- that is obvious.
In my opinion, the three no one should be without are Applied Equity Analysis, Stephen Penman's monster tome "financial statements and...", and lastly, Aswath Damadoran's book, "investment valuation."
Most hyperventilating MBAs default to Damadoran; I really enjoy the simplicity behind Applied Equity Analysis.
Caution: Neither of the 3 are what you'd call "light reading."
If you have any money left, honorable mention goes to Cooke's "security analysis on wall street."
Probably the best.......2004-07-15
I've been looking for a practical step by step book on equity analysis from a practitioners viewpoint. This is it. Other books try to take shortcuts. This book does not take short-cuts, but neither is it bogged down with unncessary academic exercises. If you really want to understand how to do valuation and applied equity analysis I can't recommend any book more highly. It is head and shoulders above anything else out there. Penman's book (from Columbia Business School) is also good but it is a VERY serious and weighty book that probably should only be attacked after you have read this one. Get this book by English and you will not be sorry. I have spent way too much time reading hundreds of other books that weren't nearly as educational. Again, however, it is only for the serious investor.
Very readable, very insightful, and extremely practical.......2001-09-23
James English's "Applied Equity Analysis" is a how-to manual on evaluating stocks based on his 20 years of experience at JP Morgan. The book is very well-written and readable since the author employs plain english (no pun intended) to make his three major points: 1) accounting numbers--while by no means perfect--are excellent tools in evaluating stocks, 2) accounting-based stock valuation is superior to (but does not neccessarily supplant) cash flows, and 3) competition ensures that eye-popping financial performance doesn't last forever.
Contrary to another reviewer, English employs excellent examples to clarify and explain his points. Some examples: Gateway 2000's earnings history was used to explain how to find and interpret non-recurring items (NRI) on financial statements. Ratio analysis was demonstrated by looking at the PC industry in 1998. Emerson Electric was the company chosen to show why mature companies were still good buys. Many other examples abound, and English does a successful job in tying their relevance to his arguements.
But successful use of examples is not just the only strength of the book. The author also tackles a range of topics complete with insightful and clear discussions: the flaws of the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH), Economic Value Added (EVA), financial statement analysis, fundamental analysis, etc.
A quick glance at the table of contents below gives you an idea of the scope of English's book. I highly recommend this book to not just Wall Street analysts, anyone who is interested in finding fundamental value in evaluating stocks instead of following the crowd.

Flexibility: getting value from Risk.......2004-01-27
Electricity markets present many risks and opportunities to investors, mainly after the deregulation that took place in the last ten years in many countries.
Flexibility can reduce risk and increase value by adjusting the optimal action to the changing market conditions.
This new book comprises the editor's introductory article, 8 papers plus a subject index covering all papers.
All papers are practical and very accessible with few equations, so that undergraduate students and professionals can take
advantage of this welcome addiction to electricity economics bookshelf.
MBA and graduate students also will learn with the
diversity of topics covered by the book and they will know valuable details from the electricity markets.
The book covers all electricity industry process: generation, transmission and distribution/retailing. Among the topics
analyzed I highlight renewable generation, energy portfolio, exotic options, deregulation, contracts, and even organizational
learning.
The subject index is a rare issue in this kind of book (papers collection) but very important for the readers interested in
specific topics. Thanks Anne, for the good edition!

Book Description
The first edition of Porter/Norton was the most successful new entry into the financial accounting market in twenty years. This third edition holds true to the original vision of teaching the subject from both the preparer and user perspective, but with a revision focused on greater accessibility to the variety of students taught. Two annual reports (Gateway and Ben JerryÆs) and an annual update program with price stability guarantee highlight the third edition package.

Get the new edition, not the 9th edition.......2002-09-18
I am the co-author of this book. the 10th edition is now out. If you are a student, you'll want that. If you're trying to learn on your own, you'll find this 9th edition adequate and much cheaper. good luck. roman
Great for graduate study.......2002-08-22
Many people get this book wrong. This is a book for graduate students, not for undergraduates. It introduces the concepts of financial accounting in a condensed way, which does require more time and patient to understand it, like the way we study in MBA program. Since this book assumes its reader as future statement readers, it introduces finanical statements, including balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement,in the first few chapters to let student understand the linkage among them. It is usually very difficult to understand for those without background, though. Plus, given the fact that this book is required by most of top MBA programs, like Chicago, Columbia, and NYU, I'd like to say that accounting professors have told us the quality of this book. For those who have a hard time on this, I would also recommend its accompanied study guide and solution manuals (used one available on amazon website ISBN 0030269695& ASIN: 0030182697; make sure get the right edition!!). After all, this is a good book, but requires more practices. Good luck.
A Good Introductory Text.......2001-12-30
I'd never had any accounting courses before. This textbook was required for my financial accounting course in an MBA program. The book does a good job of logically explaining all the important topics. Unfortunately, it takes a Herculean effort to sit down and study the material due to the dry subject matter.
The authors did a good job of using examples from real firms, which, I think, makes it more interesting. I've decided to keep this book after the course for a reference.
Accounting for dummies (ahem, I mean Lawyers).......2001-10-16
I am a 2nd year law student in the top 10% of my class at a first tier law school (meaning, I'm capable of reading and comprehending dense material). I took an accounting class thinking it would be helpful knowledge in the practice of law. My professor - fantastic. This text book - awful. The only reason I was able to (hopefully) get a good grade (the exam was last week) was that the professor was so good at explaining the concepts he felt were important. The book was confusing and overly verbose (coming from a wordsmith & soon to be lawyer, that statement should be given much weight!!) There were many exercises, but truth be told it was the professor's explanations that allowed me to do the exercises, NOT the book's.
You're going to get confuse!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-06-15
Firstly,I really want to rate this book zero star or minus star.I've bought this book because I used it in my MBA course .This book made me hate Accounting too.I strongly agree with rewiewer " this book made me hate accounting" .After I've read this book for many times I found it very wordy I can summarise the concept in one line whereas the books try to explain too much (2-3 pages)and also irrelavant.Eventhough the authur uses a lot of explanations, but can not be understood.IT is very vital to you to keep your money for the movie, put in the bank ,or doing whatever except buying this book.Anyway this book has a lot of exercises( Not so extremely bad)
