Book Description
The most extraordinary politician, businessman, medicine man, and promoter imaginable was this Cajun entrepreneur who revolutionized American product advertising.
Book Description
It starts with the IGBN (I’ve Got Big News) phone calls and a mailbox full of Save the Dates. Next comes the meltdown: I always thought I’d be married by now. Why does she have a ring on her finger and I don’t? Soon you’re buying outrageously expensive china, dancing the electric slide with the groom’s dull but available cousin, and envisioning a long and single life for you and a dozen or so cats. But fear not!
Now Erin Torneo and Valerie Cabrera Krause show you how to surf The Bridal Wave on your own terms. This hilarious and practical guide to surviving the wedding blitz reveals the sanity-saving secrets to dealing with all manner of matri-mania, including how to
• manage finances during the costly wedding season
• turn brutal self-examination (“What’s wrong with me?”) into empowering self-reflection (“Nothing!”)
• cope with envy and feelings of competition
• deal with lobridemized friends
• avoid settling for Mr. Wrong just to fit the timeline in your head
• actually enjoy being a bridesmaid, despite the dress
Like the best of friends, Erin and Valerie will help you separate fact from fairy tale–and stay sane, whether you’re coupled-up, single and looking, or single and just fine, thank you very much!
“For any woman who is currently trapped in the middle of a Bridal Wave–this book is your lifesaver!”
–Liz Tuccillo, co-author of He’s Just Not That Into You
“A funny and genuinely helpful book that should be on ever single woman’s shelf.”
–Karen McCullah Lutz, author of Legally Blonde
“Torneo and Krause’s advice will be eagerly gobbled up by legions of women.”
–Celeste Perron, author of Playing House
“Will ease your wedding panic with humor and intelligence.”
–Andrea Lavinthal, co-author of The Hookup Handbook
Customer Reviews:
Worth the read.......2007-09-06
When you pick up this book, you certainly know what you're getting. It's entertaining and comforting though not entirely earthshattering. I found this book to give some good pointers in dealing with your "IGBN" friends and found an interesting statistic: 88% of people marry at least once in their life. Obviously if there's a book on this topic......well then I'm not the only one!
If you are in the bridal wave you need a laugh-this is it!!.......2007-07-23
This book is hilarious!! I laughed on just about every page! It is sooo true and sooo funny. I really enjoyed this book and related to it to a "T". I am 25 and caught in the middle of the bridal wave and this book really tells it like it is and gives great ideas that help get through these times....and makes it seem not so bad because there is a better way to handle this situation. This book is great for any single who feels that everyone around her is getting married but her and that she feels like shes being picked last for the kickball team, or someone in a relationship that is chomping at the bit waiting for her boyfriend to propose while watching her friends "flash the ice" and make that trip down the isle. I LOVED reading this and I think everyone else will too!!
Everyone should buy this book!.......2007-05-02
Well I happen to be friends with one of the authors' "current boyfriend" mentioned in the book. I bought it mostly to support her but I figured I might as well read it so I could come up with something nice to say about it. This is not the kind of book I would normally pick up. I thought it would be kind of...you know...self help book for the twenty/thirty something single girl. But I started to read it and I could not put it down. It was well written, funny, sarcastic, didn't take itself too seriously, and an amazingly apt description of what is happening to my group of girlfriends right now. I bought copies for my remaining three unmarried friends. Yes, there are only three (plus me), and that's from two different social circles. I thought this book was fantastic and I really appreciate having it around right now. It has provided some much needed perspective during a somewhat rough time in my life. Reading it, I feel like I know the authors and I really really like them. Every woman going through a "bridal wave" should have this book as a reminder that you aren't the only one out there not getting married. I would also recommend this book to those women who ARE making the choice to wed...it gives a nice perspective of both sides and has the potential to save a lot of valuable friendships.
What a fantastic book!!!!!.......2007-04-16
This book was excellent; I just went through all this with my best friend a few months ago and it really put into perspective what I've been going through. I was really missing our old friendship and feeling sorry for me: why am I not married/in a serious relationship, etc. It made me look at things on a much more positive side. Besides that, the anecdotes are wonderful! I got it from the library but it made me feel so good and had such great advice for getting through this with your dignity intact and without winging out at the reception! that I am going to buy my own copy!!
Down-to-earth advice about weddings.......2007-03-09
We've all dealt with it before...it's something we've all dreaded and muddled through in an attempt to show love and support to our best friends during their happy time of engagement parties and stress of planning a wedding. And, at one time or another, we have all been envious and maybe a little unsure of how to act without coming off as being totally calloused and envious of our friend's good fortune.
The Bridal Wave gives practical, light-hearted and down-to-earth advice. I'm positive I'm not the only woman that has ever had questions regarding correct etiquette and what all is appropriate for showers and presents and such. There's no longer a need to worry. The authors plainly tell you what is allowed and what isn't...ranging anywhere from what to wear to what time you should arrive for the ceremony. And wonderful 'believe it or knot' hints flow throughout the pages to keep you informed on the no-so-often mentioned side of the wedding planning and parties.
The Bridal Wave seeks to encourage women to enjoy whatever season of life they are in and offers guidance on how to live it up even if to some extent you wish that it were you. The pages are filled with hilarious and much-needed information that the women of today's society needs--especially during the bridal wave season!
Armchair Interviews says: Get prepared. The mailbox is starting to fill with invitations and you can hear the wedding bells ring in that season.
Book Description
Webb Chiles first set out in 1973 in Egregious, a 37-foot cutter. His aim: a solo circumnavigation via Cape Horn. Despite frequent rigging damage and a hull cracked in a gale, he became the first American to round Cape Horn.
Webb looks for new challenges and sets another record. He is the first person to cross the Pacific in an open boat, Chidiock Tichborne. On the way from Fiji to Papua New Guinea, Chidiock is pitch-poled and swamped, leaving Webb adrift for two weeks. He repairs the boat and almost completes a second circumnavigation, but the boat capsizes during a hurricane in the Canary Islands.
He buys a sloop, Resurgam, in 1983, completes a third circumnavigation, and continues sailing, rounding Cape Horn. In 1992, Resurgam sinks off Ft. Lauderdale and Webb swims for 26 hours, until he's rescued by fishermen. He picks up the pieces of his life, buys a new boat, finds a new love, and is ready for new challenges.
A man relentlessly driven to discover his limits, he pushes beyond them. Webb Chiles is a true adventurer who writes poignantly about his experiences.

Children's story with a serious message........2001-04-18
The illustrations are all from cut out paper -- very intricate and visually interesting. The story includes danger (readers should be ready to deal with drowning, and attack on a village by cannons from a ship). Has a message about grieving the loss of a good, native, natural life to the influx of crass europeans. Beautiful imagery about a brave and wise young woman. Has a suggestion of hope and holding on through hard times for a better future for us all.

Book Description
The wave loves the old woman. That is why it waits on dry land, curled over her house, bent low to hear her every word. Most of these are grumpy, though, for the old woman has lived her whole life beneath the wave and therefore can see nothing good in it. Her roof is stuck like nothing good in it. Her roof is stuck like a pincushion with umbrellas, which she hope will stem the drippings and droppings from above. But no. She and the waves go on with their lives until a wanderer appears and sees not the bother in the wondrous wave, but the possibilities. And then the old woman can see them, too, and together with her old dog, Bones, she flows away toward the blue and distant mountains, surging and plunging, swirling and curling in a washtub boat she's kept handy just in case the wave ever fell. It had fallen years before: in love.
Customer Reviews:
Delightful on so many levels.......2007-02-24
On the surface, a nice story about an old woman who, even if reluctantly, decides it's high time for adventure.
It's also about taking risks, about unconditional love, challenging or learning to accept life's limitations, and being alone. Yet the text is simple enough that a 4 year old could listen to it as happily as a class of college students. (I know, cuz I've read it to both.)
One of my favorite things about this book is that when the "stranger" comes, the who encourages the old woman to take risks, that stranger is another woman, somewhat younger. (How many authors would have taken the cheap way out and made the stranger/teacher a young man, or even another old woman?)
The collage pictures are exquisite. This is a powerful, beautiful, quiet book.
beautiful metaphor.......2004-03-07
I bought this book for my mother after the sudden death of my father.
Life is all around us...waiting to be explored. It is our perceptions and attitudes that dictate our experience in life (at least if you are fortunate enough to live in the Western world). I think this book beautifully illustrates the fears and prejudices that prevent us from seeking out joy along with illustrating a lush picture of life's possibilities. The overall message of the book will be lost on most young children but, even without perceiving it's layers, the illustrations and story are lovely and highly entertaining for children to read.
Wonderful collage illustrations.......1999-07-24
I loved this book, almost enough to give five stars. It's wonderful to meet a real, cranky character and the patience of nature who waits for her to find herself. The illustrations give a lot to look at. Certainly NOT just for children 4-8.
What a unique book!.......1999-02-27
Sometimes we fail to perceive the beauty of a place if we have been there too long. This is what happens to the old woman who has lived at the foot of a standing wave all her life. The wave loves her. It bends low to her as if it is going to kiss her. It tries to please her by offering her gifts such as shadows of dancing fish. But the woman simply sees the wave as an enemy instead of a friend and a possibility--until one day a traveler passes by . . . This book could be used to remind children, as well as adults, that sometimes we simply forget to appreciate what's right around us.
The illustrations are gorgeous collage paintings. My five-year-old child enjoys this book. He thinks it is beautiful. Readers who are older will not only love the beauty of its language and illustrations but also the meaning the story connotes.

Green Sees Things in Waves signals a great leap forward for August Kleinzahler. He has always been a fine musician. Here, however, he goes beyond the image-based poem, and renders a fluid consciousness in a manner that is at once precise and expansive. The most striking formal quality is the syntax. On a smaller scale, it enables the poet to pull off some wonderful, almost hieratic touches: note how he ascribes "that narrow russet instrument of face" to his subject in "Vulture Under the Palisades." On a larger scale, his syntactical play allows Kleinzahler to pepper his poetry with pop culture, Americana, the everyday, and his touching and intimate observations of people. All of these qualities are expertly packed into this sinuous sentence from the memorable "Snow in North Jersey":
It is with a terrible deliberateness
that Mr. Ruiz reaches into his back pocket
and counts out $18 and change for his LOTTO picks
while in the upstairs of a thousand duplexes
with the TV on, cancers tick tick tick
and the snow continues to fall and blanket
these crowded rows of frame and brick
with their heartbreaking porches and castellations
and the red '68 Impala on blocks
and Joe he's drinking again and Myrna's boy Tommy
in the old days it would have been a disgrace
and Father Keenan's not been having a good winter
and it was nice enough this morning
till noon anyhow with the sun sitting up there like a crown
over a great big dome of mackerel sky.
Here as elsewhere, the poet constantly shifts focus, both visually and in terms of diction. Yet even as reality and dream "mingle and dissipate," Kleinzahler always affirms the ultimate reality of the imagination. --Mark Rudman
Book Description
1996 Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
In this powerful and inventive collection, August Kleinzahler succeeds in creating a new idiom for American lyric poetry that captures the velocity and swerves of contemporary life in the city. He pushes the language very hard to get there, and the results are breathtaking: an angular, propulsive poetry that transforms character, voice, and setting into buzzing, luminous events.
Customer Reviews:
Kleinzahler's masterpiece.......2000-07-27
With this book, August Kleinzahler -- already one of those fascinating poets who makes you glad that you live in the present moment -- has given us a strong, strange, unique and utterly memorable collection of poems. In poems like "Snow in New Jersey" and "Uttar Pradesh" he combines the textures and techniques of a short story writer with the roving eye of a documentary film-maker using a hand-held camera that allows him to venture anywhere and everywhere, with the result that the reader never knows where he is going next. There is more of a concern here with language in itself, that is, language considered as more than a mere medium of representation, than in his previous work (see "52 Pick-up"); yet at the same time, the new poems show more narrative and a greater facility for following complex, often associative patterns of thought. Best of all are the surprises -- to take just one (although admittedly my favorite) example, the twelfth line of "The Dog Stoltz," which practically knocked me off my feet. Kleinzahler's new poems are so contemporary, so accurate, so detailed, and so relevant that they put the front page of the New York Times to shame.

Katydid Strokefever: The Girl Asked About the Mushrooms and Shouldered the Animosity of the Systemgreen.......2006-08-27
Feeble entry to the genre....lugubrious, unintriguing pace...the sexual undertones were a colossal blunder...I feel the story would have improved if the appropriate sense of urgency was instilled...such a melodramatic title calls for putting the reader in a headlock...no, sir, this wasn't a good one AT ALL.
A really good book on a Disaster that really could happen.......1998-04-15
I really like this book. The book uses non-fictional facts and locations in B.C and Northwest U.S.A. The book takes place supposedly when the Columbia River Treaty is up for Renewal, And Terrorists Blow up the Mica Dam. Which causes a series of events that cause much destruction. What makes the book a little far fetched is the amount of coincidences's that happen. This book is really good, and people should read it, especially if you live in the area that the Wave would travel through if it were to happen.

Best Punk Discography Book of Past 20+ Years.......2007-09-23
This is easily the best piece of printed punk discographical scholarship since B. George and Martha Defoe's legendary International Discography of the New Wave in the early 80s. But whereas that book was just a basic discography with some pictures, Mario has taken it upon himself to give the history of every band, describe the records, rate them by collectability and show a picture of everything. It's really quite amazing and exceptionally well put-together. I only wish he had extended into the early 80s and included LPs, but that would take another book or two. I'm looking forward to future volumes.
An Indispensable Guide.......2007-09-21
This book is an essential reference for both the seasoned collector and eager neophyte. Pics galore, an exhaustive attention to minutiae and fair, objective reviews make it a really engrossing read; it's an unequivocal triumph. I've found myself leafing through this book constantly since its purchase--subsequent visits have also beefed up my UK wantlist considerably. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Observation Deck
Standing on this deck I look down and observe.
This deck is high above the lives of my friends
At times I feel higher than all human kind
I stand alone humbled in this crowd
As the crowd separates Between the entertainers
And the loners
I stand back and observe.
Perched above on this lonely deck, I wonder if I learn more from this distance
Separation, separating myself from the world
They all learn from their mistakes.
From me they take and take
I observe like I'm on a deck.
From above looking down.
I so want to look up instead of down
Even if I have to jump off this deck
Position my arms close to my eyes and just dive
Dive into the rest of the world
All it's insecurity
By now I should have learned my way around
Or like Grenouille
learned my smell around
By now I should be able to stand on my own cloud
Pour myself out and share with the crowd.
This collection of dark, brooding poetry explores poet Joseph Saunders's journey from boy to man over the course of a decade. Love, betrayal, beauty, and danger combine in an eclectic mix of words and emotions that compel you to delve into your soul.

How and when is income taxable? To whom is it taxable? This Nutshell summarizes U.S. federal income tax law, defines income, and identifies the different types of deductions. Also inquires into the policy and purposes of, and alternatives to, existing legal rules.

Legal Mumbo-Jumbo.......2002-06-07
Mr. McNulty is listed as a "Law professor" but hasn't applied the Law to his book. He believes that every time you receive money or money equivalents it is taxable. If the professor would read the Code of Federal Regulations, he would find this to not be true. A review of CFR 1.861-1 through 1.861-14T determine that two criteria must be met for Income to be taxable. 1) Item or category of items (Salary, wages, interest etc.,all those things listed in 26 USC Sec. 61), and 2) a specific source from which the income derives,(all of the sources that apply at 1.861-8(f)(i-vi) are FOREIGN SOURCES. Nowhere is the Income of a citizen, working within the 50 States found to be liable for the Income Tax and Professor McNulty knows this. To continue to publish untruths serves only to confuse and defraud the American Public.

Each includes elementary instruction with pointers to one or more Web sites that perform the function or explain it in greater depth, a series of screen shots from those sites illustrating this narrative, and a sidebar with related information. Could Use a Few Tips for Day Trading Online.......2006-06-26
This book was very good back in the "buy and hold years" of 1998-2001. It's still a good read and very enjoyable.
These days, in my opinion, a trader needs more practical and up to date strategies especially if he wants to start day trading online on a regular basis.
Stock trading is all about making buy and sell decisions. When you make a trade either your going to lose money or your going to make money, and some other times you will break even. When you win some body else will lose and so forth, but that's NOT what's important.
The most important aspect of day trading is the "know-how" strategies you employ to make your buy & sell decisions. There are many "surefire" systems outhere, but you need to test them in order to discover which ones help you the most. That's part of your homework as an online stock trader. Test, test and test again.
Complicated systems that rely on a truck load of technical analysis indicators can make you slow, and being slow in this game can be as dangerous as not knowing what to do in the first place.
I think the worst thing that can happen to a beginner trader is to get information OVERLOAD. It's better to go step by step, and test a simple trading system that can show you how to focus on concrete ways to profit day in and day out.
Fortunatly there are some good sites on the web today that can show you how to trade in a practical and effective way. One of those sites is Smart Day Trading (SmartDayTrading com)
In the end, day trading is all about buying and selling according to your knowledge FILTER. Once you master and follow youre proven filter parameters like a clock, you can expect to start making serious amounts of cash on a consistent basis.
Investing Online by Gray and Menche review by Ellen Hochman.......2001-07-14
Excellent and interesting, not stuffy at all. Easy to follow with practice lessons at the end of every chapter. Good essential information for the beginner investor, not just for online traders. Covers the "how-to's" of analyzing stocks and mutual funds to add to your portfolio put in easy to understand and fun terms. By: Ellen Hochman
Very detailed book on all aspects of online investing.......2000-05-25
This is a very detailed book which covers all aspects on online investing. Most people can skip chapter 1 which shows basic Internet browsing and navigation. The rest of the book shows web pages you can look at. I like this book because the authors highlight and explain the different parts of each of the web pages. At 400 pages, this book is short enough so that you won't get bored and long enough that the author just don't explain a concept in a sentence or a paragraph. The authors give enough detail so that you can understand and profit.
Pleased Reader.......2000-01-17
"Teach Yourself Investing Online", by Thomas S. Gray and Claire Mencke, is the ideal book for online investors, both novices and old-timers. The information is easy to understand, easy to read, and very interactive. There are sites to visit, quizzes and worksheets to fill out, and pages and pages of screenshots and sidebars and intriguing reading. This book can be used for quick reference or for straight-forward research. Very up-to-date and needed in this fast-paced Internet world, with online catalogs and stock trading sites, this book is your manual to succeed in this day in age. The book covers such subjects as stock quotes to saving for your child's college fund to shopping online. I was clueless and, frankly, frightened of the stock market and Internet investments before I peeked at these pages -- now I'm hooked, making extra money, and learning how to budget my finances. This book is for young and old investors alike, and it's easy to follow, with clear language and straight-forward visuals. It was obvious to me that these authors know what they're talking about. A must! If you think you could never make it in this busy online investing economy, you need this book! If you think you know all there is to know, you need this book! Finally, I read something I needed so much!

Customer Reviews:
Sams Teach Yourself e-Banking Today.......2000-06-22
This is a great book for anyone searching for a bank with online services. This book is also ideal for any bank considering an online presense. The book thoroughly details - from a customer's standpoint - what banks are currently doing well, and not so well. Readers are provided with lots of good tips. It is practical and timely information - I would highly recommend this book.
