    Book Description

Richard Schonberger, in his fourth and most important book yet, introduces a powerful new concept: that the many links between and within the four main business functions -- design, operations, accounting, and marketing -- form a continuous "chain of customers" that extends to those who buy the product or service. Everyone has a customer -- the next department, office, shop, or person -- at the hundreds of pioneering companies Schonberger has studied throughout the world.

Schonberger demonstrates the universality of customer wants: Both the next and final customers want ever better quality, quicker response, greater flexibility, and lower cost. This condition provides a common strategy and calls for common methods to be used across the organization. Every employee is a data gatherer and analyst, unearthing more and better ways to provide for these customers' wants -- before the competition does so.

As the new thinking and methods permeate every comer of the firm, they topple departmental walls and adjust gang-like mind-sets and "them-versus-us" attitudes. Performance is no longer measured by internal costs but by improvement as seen by the next customer; direct control of causes generally replaces after-the-fact control of costs. Design is brought out of isolation. Finally, with the rest of the firm reoriented toward customer service, marketing escapes from a "negative" mode -- covering up for failures -- to a positive one -- crowing about the firm's competence and ability to improve.

With the close attention to detail for which he has become famous, Schonberger constructs a blueprint for unifying corporate functions, brilliantly describing the new microcosms that will make up the company of the 1990s -- focused teams of multi-skilled, involved employees arranged according to the way the work flows or the service is provided -- that compose the chain of customers. Aetna, for example, is organizing customer-focused teams that cut across underwriting and the administrative functions. At Hewlett-Packard, teams of marketing, manufacturing, and R&D people have already gone through several iterations of "activity-based costing", which provides product designers with previously unavailable data for shaving costs throughout product life cycles. And at Du Pont, even production people on the factory floor are involved in assessing competitors' product quality and probable costs and methods. Through these and hundreds of other real company examples, Schonberger shows how the customer-driven chain of action leads directly to the kinds of bottom-line performance that have been so elusive to executives who manage at a distance "by the numbers" -- namely, higher profits, greater security, and gains in market share at the expense of the laggard competion.

If You're Clueless About the Stock Market and Want to Know More is the perfect title for this snappy info-guide from Seth Godin, a prolific "book packager" who has developed a number of bestselling personal finance tomes. Aimed at the beginning long-term investor--rather than the day trader wannabe often targeted by today's investment tutorials--this book covers virtually all the essential techniques and procedures involved in the process, and it does so in a clear and logical manner. It offers helpful explanations for standard practices, such as deciphering balance sheets and income statements, as well as more sophisticated concepts like options, futures, shorting stocks, and buying on margin. There also are good sections on dealing with brokers, formulating an investment strategy, and using the Net to research and trade. Know absolutely nothing about the market's organization or operation? Godin even provides the fundamentals ("the basic function of the stock market is to provide capital resources for corporations that seek to expand their operations and finance their growth") and a brief history (beginning with America's first stock exchange, formed in Philadelphia two years before Wall Street) to get you started. --Howard Rothman

            3 out of 5 stars So - So.......2007-10-02

the book was fairly uninteresting and almost too broad. I felt like after every tiny section, he assumed you understood and just moved on. I was really clueless and was wanting just any information I could get my hands on. I did learn a little but it wasn't necessarily that helpful. The other reason I chose this book was because the author's name came up when I was discussing Malcolm Gladwell with a friend of mine. I assumed he might be just as intriguing but I got quite the opposite within the text.

An interesting read for anyone who knows very little about the interworkings of the market and global economics.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, But you Need to GO Further.......2006-07-17

These days it's really hard to find trading knowledge that is practical & simple to understand.

Most of the info outhere is full of the same thecnical analysis jargon that makes you lose a lot of times. Basically most tehcnical trading books tell you the same story but organized in different chapters using different words and charts as examples.

Some places on the web have pretty practical information. One site that I recommend is StressFreeTraders com. They have a pretty clear way for trading stocks with momentum using easy to understand strategies. This is also one place where you can understand why knowing how to approach the rally is critical for your stock trading success.

4 out of 5 stars Good general overview, but beginners need to consider..........2005-09-20

First of all I like the way Seth writes. Hes a good writer and an expert on issues regarding the web.

This particular book is fine as a general reference on the stock market, but frankly beginners will need concrete strategies to make it as online stock traders.

The reality is that the stock market doesn't care if you are a beginner or not. It will gladly take your money away if you don't know what your doing. So the bottom line is, you better be well PREPARED before you even think about making the first trade.

Stock trading is a very competitive field and in order to succeed you need to FOCUS on a set of simple strategies that you can implement without hesitation.

This game is all about buying and selling according to your set ups. So the clearer your set ups are, the easier for you can be to make a profitable decision. You defenetly gotta know what kind of stocks and scenarios to look before you place your buy. Hopefully some sites on the web do offer more relevant and updated stock trading information.
            [...]
They focus mainly on short term momentum stock trading strategies, that in my opinion are easier to implement than many other technical systems outhere.

Stock trading doesn't have to be complicated as many people perceive. But you do need to follow a well organized set of rules and tactics, that once you master them, you can aspire to replicate profitable trades with consistency.

                5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for law enforcment wanna-be's (soon-be's)!!.......2002-07-16

I took a Michigan State Police Exam, and interviewed with the US Customs Service for an internship after reading this book. As far as the US Customs interview went, this book was invaluable. For the MSP exam it was also extremely helpful because the entire exam was scenario based. It is an excellent tool for people who are trying to obtain a law enforcement mindset. Most of the scenario's are only common sense police scenario's, but the book let's you determine what you'd do in a situation, and compare it with what is expected in the back of the book. It also tells you why you should've answered the question differently. I'm a Junior year Criminal Justice major, and this book has helped me a lot. Most law enforcement agencies now only give you scenario type questions that everyone thinks there really is no wrong or right answer to. You could answer all of the questions wrong, and leave the interview feeling like you did well. This book will help to prevent that. It will help you to develop a pattern of doing what is best in high stress scneario's. In an interview, you will be able to not only answer questions, but stick to the answers and explain them because you know there's not a better one.

As Waring observes, in this accounting system women are considered 'non-producers' and as such they cannot expect to gain from the distribution of benefits that flow from production. Issues like nuclear warfare, environmental conservation, and poverty are likewise excluded from the calculation of value in traditional economic theory. As a result, public policy, determined by these same accounting processes, inevitably overlooks the importance of the environment and half the world's population.

Counting for Nothing, originally published in 1988, is a classic feminist analysis of women's place in the world economy brought up to date in this reprinted edition, including a sizeable new introduction by the author. In her new introduction, the author updates information and examples and revisits the original chapters with appropriate commentary. In an accessible and often humorous manner, Waring offers an explanation of the current economic systems of accounting and thoroughly outlines ways to ensure that the significance of the environment and the labour contributions of women receive the recognition they deserve.

                      Book Description

This book, the first of its kind, presents a new Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) for the Indian economy for the year 1997-98. It provides detailed and consistent information on production for 60 sectors, and on income distribution for six categories of occupational households, separately for rural and urban areas. Using fresh figures from India’s Central Statistical Organisation, the authors also present the SAM for 2002-03. In addition, this book goes into details of the concepts, methodology and limitations of the construction of SAM.

The book is divided into three parts:

Part I deals with the input-output (I-O) model, which forms an important component of SAM. It discusses the basic analytical structure of the I-O matrix and reviews landmark applications of this model for various developing countries.

Part II evaluates the analytical dimensions of SAM and associated SAM multipliers, and reviews important and innovative applications of the SAM model, again for a variety of economies.

Part III discusses the problems encountered while constructing a SAM. It provides satellite accounts for the sectorwise distribution of employment by education levels, sex, and status for both rural and urban areas.

                        Book Description

Growth is the principal long-term economic policy objective of most governments. Yet this growth is often pursued without regard to its wider influences, and the environmental and social costs can be high. Alternative Economic Indicators argues that factors other than growth determine the real health of the economy.

Victor Anderson criticizes the conventional Gross Domestic Product and Gross National Product indices, and argues for an expanded conception of economics which gives attention to environmental and social indicators as well as financial ones. A selection of possible indicators is discussed, and a particular group is shown to be the best possible choice. Statistical data on the selected indicators for 14 countries is presented and analyzed, and conclusions are drawn about the issue of indicators and the state of the world.

3 out of 5 stars A good quick introduction into economic indicators........2004-05-30

Victor Anderson's `Alternative Economic Indicators' is a short introduction into why economic indicators as presently used by most Economists (such as the GNP, GDP and even the NNP) are inadequate as measures for the progress a nation makes.

He takes into account arguments by the pro-growth and the anti-growth groups, and then tries to work a synthesis that takes both sides views into account. While it would be admirable for us to go back to nature, the majority of people in this world are not content with such a lifestyle and so we must be pragmatic. This book is not a `what we should do' book however. It deals with a very narrow, but quite possibly one of the most important contributions to this whole debate, and that is the indicators that are used to measure `progress' however we define it.

He states that we should describe the economy in three ways, financially (as is done presently) from the human or social point of view and lastly the natural world. He then goes on to list what would make good indicators and using his criteria selects a number of present indicators that should be used and given greater prominence.

Most of the indicators that he mentions are not new, the old problems that plague statisticians are still present and he admits this, especially lack of data in countries that desperately need to keep data and he argues toward the end (pg. 94) that `there should be financial assistance to Third World countries, through the United Nations, for the development of more adequate systems for collecting and processing statistical information'.

All in all, quite an informative book and it would make a great supplement to traditional economic texts or as an introduction to the need for broader measures of man's economic progress.

                          Book Description

This book developed out of the experiences of developing gender sensitive budgets in several countries. It draws data from countries, which already have gender sensitive budgets in place, or those, which are initiating them (Australia, South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Sri Lanka and Barbados). It shows the diversity of approaches in different countries, and covers the issues, methods and strategies for the first year of implementing the exercise. The book has a strong practical orientation.

                                    Book Description

A New Architecture for the U.S. National Accounts brings together a distinguished group of contributors to initiate the development of a comprehensive and fully integrated set of United States national accounts. The purpose of the new architecture is not only to integrate the existing systems of accounts, but also to identify gaps and inconsistencies and expand and incorporate systems of nonmarket accounts with the core system.

Since the United States economy accounts for almost thirty percent of the world economy, it is not surprising that accounting for this huge and diverse set of economic activities requires a decentralized statistical system. This volume outlines the major assignments among institutions that include the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Department of Labor, the Census Bureau, and the Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

An important part of the motivation for the new architecture is to integrate the different components and make them consistent. This volume is the first step toward achieving that goal.
