        Book Description

Direct marketing is a fast-growing and dominant domestic marketing instrument in many countries. Direct marketing follows the path of the rapid advances of globalization: international direct marketing (IDM) is already a multi-billion dollar business and an attractive instrument for foreign market entry and international customer communication.

This book is the first to focus exclusively on IDM, combining state-of-the-art knowledge, best practice and unique data: The first part is a comprehensive, well-structured review, covering relevant sources ranging from academic journals to practitioner magazines. The second part consists of best practice examples of various aspects of IDM. The third part contains a summary of a proprietary consumer study on direct marketing attitudes and affinities across 24 countries in North America, Europe and Asia. The book provides the reader with a comprehensive and easy-to-understand guide to international direct marketing.

            Book Description

Best practices are guidelines for action that reflect an organization's best solution to a task in a given circumstance. Effective best practice implementers understand that practices change and evolve with the market and shifts in business objectives. Best practices needs to be viewed as a systematic process. The process must incorporate the knowledge cycle (which consists of authoring and publishing, discovering, learning and improving), and take into account corporate strategy (so it can focus on the most strategic areas that support business objectives). Read this Planning Assumption to learn the specifics about the knowledge cycle for best practices: Strategy - Incorporate best practices into the corporate strategic planning so knowledge components are identified that reflect organizational goals. Authoring and Publishing - Create expertise or competency systems that allow people to find the sources of knowledge. Discovering - Develop knowledge exchanges where people can post ideas that others might be interested in - and if an idea pays off, offer a reward. Learning - Foster site visits, tours and internal conferences that not only bring best practices to light, but also connect people who may want to apply them. Improving - Incorporate best practices into the business, embed them into products or processes so they are not extra steps, but the way in which work is accomplished. Sustaining - Reward top-performers and encourage them, through incentives, to share their practices - but avoid rewarding individuals in favor or teams.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Invesment strategies for college galore.......2007-01-25

Successfully finding a book regarding how to save for college depends heavily on the background of the reader. I am mathematically adept (majored in economics) and not a novice regarding buying and selling securities (but I don't go short or do derivatives directly). I needed a book that contains strategies that incorporate the current version of the tax code and investment basics. After some false starts (see some of my other reviews for these), I found this book to be a delight. Finally, somewhat unusual for me, I am keeping this book for future reference even after reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for 529 infomation, but go with 529 for Dummies.......2006-11-14

After my baby was born, I knew I wanted to save for her college. I read this book and another 529 book. This book was ok. I got more information from the 529 for Dummies book. It walked me through the college savings process, explained how to get college financing, and listed all the 529 companies to go with for each state. It decussed tax issues as well. This is not an easy read for someone that does not have a clue about 529's (Me).

5 out of 5 stars Very informative guide for understanding all the nuances........2004-10-19

I own and run a small investment firm and this book is what we give our clients to read. We also train our brokers and advisors with this book (among others). Of course, plans and details change constantly, but we feel this is a more than adequate book that's pretty straight and to the point on information for the average person.

I get the feeling they were trying to be "politically correct" in mentioning a lot of plans and ideas on how to save without trying to piss of mutual funds and other managers though. So many states have weird plans that allow little choice to the consumer besides 3 choices. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I wish they didn't pull punches and really reviewed and said what they really thought sometimes :-)

5 out of 5 stars One of *the* books on paying for a college degree!.......2004-06-02

David Braverman, a senior director at Standard & Poor's, looks at how financial aid can be part of your savings plan, how to use 529 and Coverdell plans effectively, and the new tax benefits available. For people who are serious about preparing for one of the major expenditures of their entire lives, this is one of the books you need to read early on. Definitely worth a read.

From the supplier: Public sector downsizing is becoming an increasingly important element of economic reform in developing countries. Labor redundancies are particularly severe in transition economies of Central Europe and the former Soviet Union, where millions of public employees have been made obsolete by the move towards capitalism. Many Latin American and South Asian countries also suffer from overstaffing as a result of decades of protective policies. Several practical steps can be taken to ensure that public sector downsizing actually increases economic efficiency. These include implementing privatization before downsizing, tailoring mechanisms for identifying redundant workers to each case, and avoiding overcompensation of displaced workers.
