These essays are really from 1992, not 2005, and they have not been revised to take into account recent scholarship.

Excellent Review of Jackson the Man and the Soldier.......2005-11-19

A. Wilson Greene has had a long professional association
with Stonewall Jackson with his many years as a historian with the national park service in Fredericksburg. His 2005 book is an updated version of his 1992 book by the same name. His book is broken into five essays discussing Jackson the mortal man, Jackson's controversial role during the seven days, his defense against Meade at Fredericksburg, his greatest moment (author's opinion)at 2nd Manasas and a final evaluation of Jackson as a general. Greene is very much an admirer of Jackson but he is reasonably objective. Greene writes fluidly and is noted for his scholarsahip and research abilities. The most fascinating essay is Jackson's role at the Seven Days battles where he seemed often late or lethargic. Greene offers insight to Jackson's confusing directions issued to him, confouding maps and guides and orders. At Savage Station, Greene notes that Jackson did not aid Magruder's attack because Lee ordered Jackson to stay in position expecting a Union retreat to White House not realizing that McClellan changed base. Jackson's inaction at Glendale is still hard to fathom but may be due to exhaustion or being ill as Greene indicates. A real bonus in this book is Greene's review of all the literature written on Jackson and his own summaries appraising their content. In addition, his exhaustive detailed notes on his own essays in this section provides interesting bits of fact sometimes correcting minor details of his earlier work. A highly readable and interestong look at 'Old Jack". Greene currently is Executive Director of Pamplin Park: The Musuem of The Civil War Soldier, which is the preserved site of the Petersburg union breakthrough. The park features a great musuem, fantastic spring tours and great symposiums featuring the best CW historians.

In 1945 the Labour Government set out to enable everyone to have a decent home, where people from all walks of life could live together. This dream was destroyed by a succession of avoidable mistakes and almost everyone now seems to believe that it is impossible to re-discover that vision, and that we must live in divided communities where many tenants live in neighbourhoods of concentrated poverty, increasing numbers of young people cannot afford to buy, and record numbers of homeless families are trapped in temporary accommodation. In contrast, most home-owners live in homes with gardens, in suburban or rural areas, benefiting from rising capital assets.
This book challenges that fatalism. It traces the different policy mistakes that have given rise to this inequitable state: the folly of mass housing, the retreat before the forces of nimbyism, the failures of regional economic planning, the under-supply of new homes, the collapse of affordable housing programmes, and the unfair tax privileges of many home owners.
Holmes describes and advocates a new vision for the new millennium, finding solutions variously in development, planning, economic structures, social reform, and political re-assessment to narrow the gap between rich and poor and enabling people in all housing tenures to finally have a choice.

A very approachable "how-to" guide.......2005-09-07

I bought this book because I am an administrator in a job which demands some public relations skills that I am having to pick up on the hoof. This book is well laid out, friendly in tone, approachable in content, and practically useful. Though most of the examples are for PR people working in Congress, you can extrapolate from them to most situations. I found the check lists and action points in each chapter particuarly useful.

Spend your money elsewhere.......2004-11-21

Sorry, but I found this book useless and uninspired. What's worse is that author is so desperate for sales he's written a stellar review of this book and then pasted it in the review section of various other P.R. books on amazon. I'm surprised that someone in public relations would use such an obviously tacky gimmick to sell his book.

should take a look at "Media Relations Handbook for Agencies, Associations, Nonprofits and Congress."

The author, Brad Fitch, teaches as an adjunct at American University in the School of Communications. He wrote Media Relations Handbook after working on the Hill for more than ten years and teaching PR courses at AU for five years.

Each chapter has a summary, and there are many checklist and tips throghout. He also has a chapter on "Honest Spin: The Ethics of Public Relations"

Great book to use as a college or graduate school text or as a supplement.
