Book Description

Written with honesty and humour, There It Is brings us Les Brown’s compelling, grunt’s-eye view of his tour in the Vietnam War.

In the raw language of soldiers, Brown describes what it was like to move through dense jungle in unbearable heat; to live in a world of perpetual danger and disease; to confront the enemy in battle; and to see his buddies die. Brown tells of his struggle to survive, a struggle which ultimately leads him to take a risky, rebellious stand.

Featuring a scene-setting introduction by Global Television News anchor Peter Kent, There It Is is a powerful, personal account of war, and a surprising reminder of the role played by thousands of Canadians in Vietnam.

5 out of 5 stars An eye-opening antiwar memoir!.......2002-03-12

This book had a profound effect on me in the way it illustrated how the "spiritual awakening" and prosperity of Canada during the 60's was paid for with the blood of America's children. I find it sickening how Canadians have distanced themselves from this war and condemned innocent veterans, most of whom were just out of highschool at the time...while at the same time praising the draft dodgers who headed north and assimilated into the Canadian population. These veterans need to be treated with the respect they deserve once and for all.

In his autobiography, "There It Is", Les Brown tells of his experiences as a Canadian born teenager, drafted into the US Army after returning to his parents home in California after a summer vacation in his native Quebec. You feel the helplessness he must have felt while trapped in the Kafkaesque draft system -one moment surfing the golden California beaches, the next on the front lines in South East Asia.

Lost in the green whirlwind that is the US Army, the young soldier quickly adapts to grunt life -finding brotherhood among those poor souls lost in the anarchy of a deteriorating war effort. As it becomes more and more clear that the American leadership has failed, Les becomes increasingly defiant. While in the most dangerous jungles he refuses to carry an M-16 and even goes AWOL for week surfing the beaches of Vietnam. A truly courageous Anti-War memoir, "There It Is" brings to the public consciousness the demons harbored by one man but belong to us all.

Book Description

This title traces the baseball lives of Craig Biggio, Mo Vaughn, John Valentin, and Marteese Robinson, from the playgrounds through college ball to the big leagues, revealing a fascinating and personal account of four routs to the same destination and dream.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An easy read.......2003-08-27

So many times have I heard stories about career(or dream)-ending injuries and knew it wasn't as mellow to them as they made it seem. It was nice to see Robinson rewarded with the HOF(Seton Hall) in the end. Biggio was destined for greatness, Valentin was better than I thought he was, and Vaughn was a monster from the start. They all have some facinating human stories that make it hard to look at them the same.

5 out of 5 stars A very fine read -- especially for baseball fans.......2002-11-07

The Hit Men and the Kid Who Batted Ninth by sports writer David Siroty is an involved and involving study of the lives of Craig Biggio, Mo Vaughn, and John Valentin, three renowned baseball players, each of whom earned MVP honors, Gold Gloves, and more, -- as well as the life of Marteese Robinson, a friend and college teammate of the three men who was left behind from the professional baseball world. Robinson would eventually find a way to join his friends; just not a way that any of them expected. The Hit Men and the Kid Who Batted Ninth is an engaging tale, featuring an aside with a quotable quote from the men it spotlights on almost every page, as well as an inset section of black-and-white photographs. The Hit Men And The Kid Who Batted Ninth is a very fine read -- especially for baseball fans.

4 out of 5 stars A must read for any baseball fan.......2002-08-13

Maybe I'm a bit biased since two of the four players profiled in this book are now Mets, but I really enjoyed their stories. Siroty takes you from their childhoods through college, to the minor leagues and the majors. Every player has a different path, and not all of them have the traditional happy endings. Every page mentions a new player whose name you'll recognize - I always wondered how every baseball player seemed to know each other, even if their teams never competed. You'll love this book if you love baseball - because it really shows the players' passion for the game.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I was there!.......2002-07-09

David Siroty writes a factually accurrate account of the Hit Men from Seton Hall. As a former Pirate player, I spent some time with these guys and they were all good guys and had one distinguishing trait in common; they all had the burning desire to play the great game of baseball. Excellent job by Siroty telling a great story about the greatest game on the face of the earth.
Brought back good memories. Wish I was there!
Can't wait to bring my son to Mike Sheppard's Basball Camp...keep the hustle.
PS: Marteese Robinson was one of the nicest guys in our high school, SHP.

A nice little book. Does not go into depth on the topic but provides some good ideas. The average person who has allergies probly is more than aware of what the book presents.

5 out of 5 stars Useful for anybody with pets, not just those with allergies.......2006-06-23

While the main thrust of this book is to help people who don't own pets because of their allergies become able to cope with having pets in the house, it serves other purposes as well. Many of the tips in here are "common sense" that isn't so common, that will help keep your house cleaner and reduce the amount of dust, mold, and other allergens, not just animal dander, so that everyone breathes easier. And many of the tips will also reduce the perfectly normal odor of most pets, so that some people who don't like pets because "they smell" or "they're too dirty" may be able to be convinced to allow a pet in the house, if the cleaning ideas in this book are followed.

One of the things I like best about this book is that it's divided into sections: first, how to deal with the everyday pets, cats and dogs. But then, a whole separate section on rabbits (which includes lots of information about general rabbit care and habits, as well). One tip worth the entire price of the book, for example: using the bumpy grooming gloves, instead of brushes, which both protects your skin and cleans hair and dander off your pet rabbit.

And then one about birds. There's a list of which species of pet birds are "dustier" than others, so that one can choose a less-dusty species, or, if one chooses, say, a cockatiel, which is a very dusty bird although one of the most common pet birds, one can then be prepared ahead of time with the right kind of cage and supplies for the cockatiel, not just whatever the pet store automatically pushes.

Another chapter deals with the pocket rodents, from hamsters through guinea pigs to chinchillas. Again, there's reasonably accurate (although brief) general care information about these pets, and specific tips for each species.

There are also sections for ferrets and horses, and a big section on allergy-proofing your house in general. There's information about when to see a doctor and what medical treatments are available for allergies and asthma. There's also an extensive list of websites related to pets and allergies. Overall, this is a book that even pet owners without allergies could use, and even people whose allergies are to things other than pets, as well.

5 out of 5 stars Offers much new hope for animal lovers who sneeze.......2006-05-26

How can you live with a pet when you or a family member are allergic to it? In the past the two didn't co-exist: one or the other member 'went': now there are options, which ALLERGIC TO PETS? THE BREAKTHROUGH GUIDE TO LIVING WITH THE ANIMALS YOU LOVE covers. It's the first to provide advice for cohabitation with cats, dogs and other common sources of allergies: chapters not only survey the sources of allergic reactions, but how to minimize allergens and allergen-proof a home. Offers much new hope for animal lovers who sneeze.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference.......2006-05-13

This book is fantasitc. The level of detail is deep covering not only a clinical description of what makes us allergic to our pets, but specifically how to live with dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, and even horses. I've been asthmatic all my life and I found the "how to allergy proof your home" section, one of the best references on the subject I've read.

I can finally get my daughter her kitty she's been pestering me for years. With the help of this book, I now know exactly what to do so I don't kill myself in the process.

5 out of 5 stars A Boy and His Cat.......2006-03-05

For years I yearned for a kitten, however, allergies tempered that dream. After picking up a copy of Allergic to Pets? I can now live comfortably with my wonderful kitten. I highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Information about Dog Allergies.......2006-08-11

I bought this book because my son is allergic to dogs. Some breeds give him the classic sneezing and itchy eyes. For that reaction, this book seems an interesting resource. Most breeds, however, cause my son to get hives. The hives generally appear where he has been licked by a dog. I had hoped that the subtitle of this book indicated that it might prove useful regarding that allergic reaction as well. Unfortunately, saliva is only mentioned twice in the book. One of the references (on page 44) is particularly ominous, but it does not clearly state whether any breeds cause less issues than others. Due to their coat type, some breeds do not clean themselves as much as others, and I wonder if that might make a difference? Also, some breeds just do not lick people as much as other breeds do. That might also be useful information. Overall, this book was a worthwhile purchase. It just did not cover one specific topic about which I had hoped to gather more information.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book On This Subject.......2006-05-13

My daughter is an animal lover, but recently found out that she is allergic to cats and dogs. Fortunately, these are her only allergies, but our cat does cause her to have rhinitis. She would really love to have a dog in spite of this. The allergist told us there were no hypoallergenic dogs, but this author does offer a different point of view.

This book is attractive, concise and gave me lots of ideas for how I can make owning animals a better experience for my animal loving (but allergic) daughter. My first step has been to remove the curtains from her room. This book makes the steps seem possible, not overwhelming.

5 out of 5 stars Vital addition to your Dog library.......2001-04-13

This is a well organized book that clearly defines potential skin problems of Dogs or Cats and then plots out a potential resolution that both the layman and the veterinarian alike can use to successfully assist the afflicted pet.

Helps educate the pet owner to ultimately assist the veterinarian with the proper diagnosis by delving comprehensively into the subject of skin disease, its' causative factors and curative possibilities to assist in the proper final diagnosis, which with skin ailments, is sometimes never possible to pin down.

My only wish is that a new, revised addition would be published that would reflect some of the newer drug therapies that have become available since the books' original publication date in 1997.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on Espresso Recipes.......2005-07-04

I love this book. There are loads of recipes for drinks and desserts. There are also lots of pictures and the recipes are easy to follow.

4 out of 5 stars My review of the Ultimate Espresso Machine Cookbook.......2000-03-30

Although the book is a little disappointing since it does not include any unusual or different espresso beverage recipes there are great recipes for desserts! The book is on the expensive side as the pages are high quality with many pictures. If you are looking for other uses for espresso besides beverages this is the book for you!
