Book Description
Poet, historian, and college professor, E. A. Mares is one of the true underground poets of the Chicano renaissance. His Unicorn Poem, first published in 1980, has been hailed as a Chicano epic. The present volume also comprises thirty-two poems of the last decade, including Flowers and Songs of Sorrow, a meditation on the inevitable reversal of the triumphs of conquest.
Mares proposes not a myth of bloodletting, but one of survival in love and goodness. His is an image of the unity of all peoples who would side with nature against the spoilers of the earth. To avoid fixation on the enemy, he prefers to concentrate on his own people, but always through the lens of the writer whose real material is language.Bruce-Novoa

Refreshing Thoughts.......2005-07-13
I have read many books that has taken me from one end of the earth to the other in terms of being lost trying to understand the main idea of the poem. But this poetry is straight to the point and STILL makes it point. This writer doesn't lose you with a lot of unnecessary metaphors. If this book is his beginning he has a GREAT future!! My advice.......simple......purchase it!! Good Book!!

An excellent introduction, the only such book in English.......1999-10-26
Rebetika by rights should be as well-known as tango, flamenco, or calypso, but it has received comparatively less attention outside of Greece. Gail Holst-Warhaft, a musicologist originally from Australia, wrote this short but very readable guide to the genre in the early '70s when Rembetika (or Rebetika) was undergoing a revival in Greece. It remains the only English language introduction to this powerful and haunting tradition, the "Blues" of the Greek-speaking world. Almost all modern Greek popular music, and it's signature instrument-- the bouzouki-- derives from this soulful musical culture. Rebetika combined the music of refugees from Asia Minor(i.e, Turkey)with the outlaw subcultures of the seaports and the hashish-smoking underworld; Holst-Warhaft ably explains the musical, historic and social context as she traces her own personal experience researching and learning. Roughly half the book is devoted to a selection of lyrics in English translation. Highly recommended to anyone interested in World music and"roots" musical forms.

Book Description
"It doesn't have to be easy, it just has to be possible." These are the words Brenda Layman spoke when she determined to heal her life after the suicide of her fourteen-year-old daughter. Brenda's journey led her from the depths of grief to a new understanding of the power we have to minister to one another and to help bring about healing in even the most painful circumstances. She learned that God does not intend for us to suffer through life's trials alone, but to bear one another's burdens. She also learned that it is when we are hurting the most that it is most difficult to allow comfort and help into our lives. Song of Joy is the chronicle of her journey from deep sorrow back to the hope-filled life God intends for us all. This book is a message of comfort and hope to the wounded soul.
Customer Reviews:
fantastically engrossing.......1998-12-21
I read this book in conjunction with some research I was doing on the Sand Creek Massacre for a term paper I was doing in college. My prof. gave me the book to use and I found myself totaly immersed in it. Mendoza does a wonderful job of describing why the massacre took place, how it took place, and the aftermath of the massacre. I would highly recommend it for anyone interested in American history.
An extrememly accurate and touching historical novel!.......1997-04-18
Pat's book is the most accurate account that I've read of the events leading up to the Sand Creek Massacre and the years that followed. Beautifully written and researched, this book will take you there, to Sand Creek on that fateful and sad November morning so many years ago. This book was written with sensitivity and respect for all those touched by this unfortunate event in history

Things aren't always as they seem........2007-03-17
If you are a parent looking for a great series of books to engage your kids and inspire them to read, then look no further than the anybodies series.
THe Anybodies not only makes you want to read the the other books in the series, but it is filled with references to other children's classics, which are obviously meant to inspire your children to continue reading.
An Enchanting Tale of Unrealism!.......2007-02-25
The Anybodies is my second favorite book. I love the story. I also like how it relates to the outside world. This story is about a girl named Fern who gets switched at birth, and now she has to live with the VERY BORING Mr. and Mrs. Drudger. Then some people that she has never seen before (or has she?) come to her house and she finds out from them that she is an Anybody. What is an Anybody? Well, you've got to read the book to find out!!!
transforming.......2007-01-15
The theme of this book (and its excellent sequels the Nobodies and the Somebodies) is that nothing is what it seems and that everything can change. This is such a powerful message for kids, who tend to look at the world so literally and so in the present. Very unusual. Very well-written. Great read.
My class actually wanted to skip recess and read this book!.......2007-01-07
It's true! Everyday after lunch, I read to my 3rd graders. We have a short window of time before going to recess. One of my students bought the book "The Anybodies" for me from our school book fair (I had hinted for it).
Even in the first day of reading, they were hooked. Did I mention I only have a short time to read? Fifteen minutes to be exact. The class was hooked. By the end of the first week, the classroom clock would be pointing to 12:30...recess time, but none of my students budged. None reminded me of the time. I had to stop reading, but they wanted to hear more.
Ok, N.E. Bode, whoever you are, what kind of magical literary genius can spin a tale so mesmerizing that even 8 yr olds deny themselves the frivolity of recess in order to hear "what happens next"?
When the last day of reading "The Anybodies" rolled around, the kids were downtrodden to say the least. What to do now? So, on to trusty Amazon.com. What on earth is there to read following that addicting novel? AHA!
Yes, N.E. Bode, we're reading "The Nobodies" and, yes, we're hooked again. See a review for that book in a few short weeks. You have made fans and friends of us all! What does that old writing professor of yours know anyway?
read it!.......2006-11-29
This was a great book. I recommend it. I liked this book because it was full of adventure. I think it was one of my favorites and I would think other people would like this book. I am 10 years old I think people of all ages would like this book.

Customer Reviews:
An old fashioned classic.......2006-03-13
My 2 year old daughter and I discovered the H.A. Rey flip book "Feed the Animals" at the library and she immediately was obsessed with it! I then discovered that he and his wife created an entire series of flip and fold books and I bought almost every one! This book is wonderful for young children, and if you enjoy the "Curious George" books but think that your child is a little young for them, I recommend this and all of the flap books for young children (and adults, too!).
Cute Flap Book.......2003-06-23
This is a cute flap book that was recommended by the Before Five In A Row series. It's good for 2-5 year olds. The children enjoy the surprises behind the flaps. The flaps are designed as part of the whole page, with 1/4 of the page flipped over. So, the flaps are large and very easy to maneuver for the younger child. The book is educational too, in that, the child learns what type of homes animals and people live in.

An Education Book for the Rest of Us.......2000-08-28
The Lights Are On helped me understand why schools are the way they are. I'm not an educator, but the book was easy to comprehend. It seems to have been written for "the rest of us." It was fun and worthwhile. I recommend it for anyone who wants to really understand education in America.
