Book Description
When Chechen rebels took Moscow theatergoers hostage in October 2002, it tragically highlighted the ongoing conflict between Russia and its breakaway republic, Chechnya—a war that has claimed an estimated 200,000 Chechen lives in the past decade. Yet the true nature of the debacle lies behind the headlines. In The Oath, a heroic Chechen doctor relates his harrowing experiences in the line of fire to bear witness to this international calamity, and illuminates his remarkable people and their culture.
In 1994, when fighting threatened to break out in Chechnya, Baiev left his promising career in Russia to aid his countrymen. First, he worked in a Grozny hospital until it was destroyed by Russian shelling. Returning to his hometown of Alkhan Kala, he and his fellow villagers restored a clinic with his own funds, and he soon found himself the only doctor for 80,000 residents in six villages and 5,000 refugees. During the next six years, he worked without gas, electricity, or running water, with only local anesthetics, and at one point dressed wounds with sour cream or egg yolks when supplies ran out. He often donated his own blood for surgeries, and on one occasion performed sixty-seven amputations in forty-eight hours.
Although he mainly treated civilians, Baiev also cared for Russian soldiers and Chechen fighters alike, never allowing politics to interfere with his commitment to the Hippocratic oath. He harbored Russian deserters and Chechen rebels at great personal risk and single-handedly rescued a Russian doctor who was scheduled to be executed. For this, Baiev was nearly killed by both the Russian special forces and Chechen extremists. Only when the Russian Army ordered him arrested for treating a wounded rebel warlord did Baiev finally flee Chechnya.
Echoing through his memoir is the history of Chechnya, a Muslim nation the size of Connecticut with a population of one million. Baiev explains the roots of the Chechen- Russian conflict, dating back 400 years, and he brings to life his once-beautiful ancestral home of Makazhoi where his family clan goes back generations, steeped in ancient traditions that are an intriguing blend of mountain folklore—including blood vendettas, arranged marriages, the authority of village elders—and Muslim religious rituals. And he writes frankly about the challenges of assimilating into western culture and about the post-traumatic stress disorder that has debilitated him since the war began.
The Oath is an important eyewitness account of the reality of the Chechen-Russian conflict, in which countless atrocities have been committed against average Chechens in stark contrast to the Kremlin’s portrayal of the conflict. It is also a searing, unforgettable memoir that is certain to become a classic in the literature of war.

A compelling read, deeply inspiring and heartwrenching.......2006-11-26
This book is far more than a memoir -- it is a page-turning narrative of the wonderful and terrible drama of life and war in a region about which we think little and know even less, written by a man of exceptional bravery and humanity. I met Dr. Baiev shortly after his arrival in Washington, DC, where my girlfriend (working for Physicians for Human Rights at the time) coordinated PHR's assistance to Dr. Baiev in Washington. At the time I had little appreciation for just what this man had been through, although it was obvious he had survived a harrowing ordeal. To read now the full story behind the brief weeks in which his life intersected ours has been both fascinating and deeply moving. His account of living as a Caucasus youth in the Soviet Union, his struggle to become a doctor, and his extraordinary dedication to his profession, his people and and his faith through two protracted and brutal wars is by turns fascinating, inspiring and heartwrenching. You will not find a more intimate account of the conflict in Chechnya, nor a better illustration of the way that such conflicts have become simultaneously global and local. If you care about peace, if you care about the prospects for a free and prosperous world, you cannot afford not to care about the gross violations of human rights that accompany conflicts increasingly economic, sectarian and cultural all at once. Dr. Baiev's gripping account puts a profoundly human face on the complexity and the urgency of coming to grips with the destructive conflicts that need not and should not continue into the twenty-first century.
Thrilling, heartbreaking must read primer on the human toll of war.......2006-06-03
If you are interested in war, modern politics, news, or human rights, you need to read this book. It shows what warfare is really like, what happens to people after governments make decisions. And it is heartbreaking, but you cannot put it down.
The conflict in Chechnya is mostly forgotten and then often miscontrued topic for most of the world. Dr. Khassan Baiev's memoir sheds a light on the horrors of life in Chechnya since 1994, what this ghastly, genocidal war means for the common people and Russian grunts. Baiev is a surgeon with a big heart, and never turned anyone away. He explains casualties from the rather disturbing anatomical perspective of a surgeon, illustrating how fragile bodies and how much pain people can suffer.
The book starts with his life before the war: of the ancient and beautiful Chechen traditions, of the extreme and often brutal Russian racism. As you read the book, the cultural differences between the ancient highlander Chechens and the rest of the Western world seem dwarfed by how lovely their life was, and how, as you read it, you can see yourself in their world. What stays with you is that once you empathize on this level, the eruption of war and desolation is utterly heartbreaking. Because Baiev lived it we see an intimate world being shattered, not a headline.
Baiev (narrowly) survives years of war until both the Russians and Chechen guerillas are out for his head because his clientele includes everyone (and mostly civilians) so he has to escape to America, and eventually moved to Boston. His observants description of coming to America, seeing how peaceful it is here, how people of many races coexist, and how a town in Vermont took care of his family, gives you a deeper appreciation for what we have in this country and that many take for granted.
I've never read anything that captures so vividly and personally the heartbreakingly human face of war. I think everyone should read it just to be educated on something that is going on at this moment, but that many people do not know about or simply don't understand. It speaks of overwhelming swaths of cruelty and evil, but also transcendent moments of grace and joy, humanity between enemies. Baiev treated anyone who needed help, so we see souls, not sides.
What steals the breath from you, what made me rather emotional, is how war is revealed here as so useless, so tragic, so profoundly evil because we are all people, and war destroys and perverts this sacred life that we all share in.
an excellent book.......2006-04-24
If you plan on investing your time in reading one book this year make it this one. It is a remarkable tale of an honourable man trying to survive in barbaric times under the tyranny of Putin's Russia. Hassan Biev states that one in every five chechens has been killed as a result of the conflict. However after all this carnage the war stills continues and the state still exits in the hearts of men like Dr. Biev. Perhaps the actions of people like him will ultimately lead to peace in that most violent of places.
A very interesting book........2005-07-30
Let me begin by saying that if everything in this book is true Dr. Baiev has my total respect and admiration. It's inspiring to realize that people of his caliber do exist.
There are, however, one or two disquieting features of this book that I feel compelled to mention. After having read the initial reviews I had expected not only a compelling story of human strength amidst tragedy, but a book of high literary accomplishment. That has not come to pass. Whatever Dr. Baiev's own writing style, it has been submerged in the journalistic style of Nicholas and Ruth Daniloff. Nick Daniloff is he of the famous Soviet espionage sting of the 1980's when he was arrested in Moscow in an apparent KGB set-up. Ronald Reagan himself is reported to have been involved in getting Daniloff released. I just wish Dr. Baiev had been able to choose a more literary writer to assist him in developing this book.
Another point I'm almost embarrassed to make is that Dr. Baiev comes across in this book as almost too good to be true. Not only is he an heroic doctor, brave humanitarian, and loyal son, brother, and friend, he is also described a medical entrepreneur, a doctor who not only moonlights as a cosmetic surgereon, but who is also a national martial arts champion! If this book is made into a film I can only imagine Harrison Ford playing the part of Dr. Baiev. It almost seems as if some of Dr. Baiev's financial and sports successes were included in the book just to appeal to the certain segment of the community that might find those aspects of his life as compelling as the humanitarian work of saving lives and limbs amidst war and destruction.
Nevertheless, the book is full of unique tid-bits. While many people reading it will be aware of Russia's halting attempts to convert its military forces from a large army of draftees to a smaller one of professional soldiers this is the first time I'd seen such a negative depiction of these new contract soldiers. I don't think I'd have gotten this insight anywhere but in this book. Likewise, it was also very interesting to read that in addition to the fight between the Russian military and the Chechen rebels there is a criminal, opportunistic element also actively engaged in exploiting the tragedy of Chechnya and which appears to be much more influential than I would have imagined. I think that this insight is very valuable, not only in the context of the Chechenya, but in understanding the influence of criminal opportunists in other conflicts. For me this insight itself was worth the price of the book.
I certainly recommend The Oath, worts and all.
Opened My Eyes.......2005-07-25
This book opened my eyes to the tragedy in Chechnya, and now I want to know more. A compelling, first-hand narrative of the situation in Chechnya that everyone should read.
Book Description
Unexplainable death under anesthesia occurs almost daily in American Operating Rooms. TERRO.R. is a contemporary maze of intrigue and frightful medical investigative discoveries in such cases of cardiac arrests on the O.R. table. Hopefully, this timely novel is fiction...

Interesting, thought provoking.......2007-09-04
This is an interesting book. It's not exactly War and Peace; It's much shorter, much lighter reading, and probably not as well-written. But the book is interesting and thought-provoking way beyond your average medical thriller. Without giving away any concrete details, the book takes a look at the America, and American institutions through the twisted mindset of a terrorist. This is really a fascinating look at ourselves.
Banned in Tattoo Parlors .......2007-08-18
Once you read this book, you will never, ever want a tattoo. The author provides an insider's view of an anesthesiologist's life in a busy hospital, and informs the reader about many abstruse topics, such as the terrors of tattoo ink. Interwoven through all this is the story of the discovery of a bizarre plot.
Dr Neuschatz's specialized knowledge and experience inform an interesting picture of an anesthesiologist's career. I enjoyed the author's asides about topics as diverse as leaf blowers and railroads. However, sometimes the book takes the readers' understanding too much for granted. For example, Chapter Fourteen states that `the laparoscopic approach was probably one of the most important of all recent advances in surgery,' and goes on to explain that, but I had only a vague idea about what he was talking about.
My enjoyment of the story was disrupted by the abundant typos, especially in punctuation. Perhaps I am profligate: I feel that commas don't cost much and pave the page for the reader. When I read "Morning Nora," I wonder, is there an Afternoon Nora and an Evening Nora? Oh, he means Morning -comma- Nora. These sentences would be spoken differently, so in a novel they should be written differently. His line "Ready Peg" reminded me of Ethelred the Unready; make that "Ready, Peg." I had trouble with this sentence: "What a great idea Kyra I did not think of that!" A comma is a pause or a breath. This sentence would not be spoken in one breath without pause.
Also, the author may contribute to professional journals where contractions are taboo, but in a novel full of dialogue, contractions are called for. Consider this: "If you are wrong and nothing happens to you, they will end up calling you Newman the Nut at the hospital but, if you are right, you will die!" I read with my ears as much as my eyes. IMHO, this sentence would be more natural written thus: "If you're wrong and nothing happens to you, they'll end up calling you Newman the Nut at the hospital, but if you're right, you'll die!"
Nitpicking aside, I enjoyed the book and hope the author is working on his next novel. Just mind your punctuation, Doctor!
Count backwards from 100...........2007-07-19
Dr Joseph Neuschatz's medical/political thriller is based on an interesting and original premise; What if terrorists convinced martyrs-to-be that dying on a surgeon's table for the insurance money was just as noble as wearing a suicide-vest in a train station? It's a pretty frightening thought, medical liability being what it is, but "TerrO.R." spells it all out with frightening plausibility.
Dr Phillip Newman is an Anesthesiologist who enters "TerrO.R." as a young patient unexpectedly dies during a mundane typical procedure. As would be expected, lawsuits start flying and Dr Newman is suspicious of something darker when the amounts leap into the hundreds of millions. What he and other doctors begin to discover are similar deaths with similar legal actions...and Dr Newman battles to find out the connection.
The book is well done and a quick read. (I got it done on a mere 3 morning subway commutes.) I was also able to read through the medical procedures without feeling lost, which is no minor feat for a medical writer. There are a couple sticking points in that the dialogue is stilted, but understandable. If you're ready to deal with that, then you'll enjoy the suspenseful "TerrO.R."
Interesting premise, but needs a good editor..........2007-07-08
I was contacted by Joseph J. Neuschatz, M.D. to see if I would be interested in reviewing his novel TerrO.R.. Medical thrillers are always of interest to me, so I accepted. After a quick read (it's not very long), I can say that the premise of the novel is interesting, but it suffers the same problem as many other self-published/print-on-demand books... the lack of a good editor to clean up the writing and shape the story.
To avoid giving away too much of the plot, I won't go into much of it here. Suffice it to say that an anesthesiologist is involved in a case where an apparently healthy young man is undergoing a tattoo removal procedure. While under anesthesia, the patient goes into cardiac arrest and dies. The family sues almost immediately, and the anesthesiologist is devastated as it's his first lawsuit. After some investigation, he discovers a number of other cases that seem to have the same scenario and outcome. He takes it upon himself to try and get to the root of the problem... assuming the deaths were not accidental.
Normally medical thrillers involve surgeons or general practitioners, not anesthesiologists. Neuschatz is himself an anesthesiologist, and you learn quite a bit about the specialty during the story. The plot twist at the end was unusual, and isn't something I've seen or considered before. The major issue with the story is the writing. The conversation between the characters was pretty stilted, and I just couldn't see dialogue between two people playing out as it was written. In addition, many of the surgery scenes, while interesting, didn't have anything to do with the story. Given the book is only 150 pages to begin with, it felt as if a short story was trying to be padded out to novella size for stand-alone publishing. If it had been published by a major publishing house under the guidance of an experienced editor, I think the outcome would have been much better.
If you have the chance to read TerrO.R. and need something to fill a couple of hours, go for it. Just make sure you're not expecting something along the lines of Palmer or Cook.
A Bracing, Bright, Unique Insight into Terrorism's Possible Variations.......2007-07-06
Joseph J. Neuschatz has a decided edge in writing this highly intriguing and frightening novel about the insidious invasion of terrorist activity within the field of American Medicine. As a practicing anesthesiologist he witnesses those moments of life/death decisions and crises from the vantage of sitting at the head of a surgical patient, a stance that obviously has opened his imagination to some frightening possibilities. He has the tenor of the OR down pat and the vocabulary and knowledge of medicine as tools on which to build a credible story. And he happens to write VERY well!
Phillip Newman, MD is the kind of anesthesiologist everyone admires: he is bright, thoroughly trained and experienced physician, an excellent technician and a warm human being with a keen sense of humor. Married to a supportive nurse wife Kyra, he seems to have it all. On a seemingly routine case of a tattoo removal by a plastic surgeon on a 19-year-old kid under pressure from his father, Newman approaches the case with his usual excellent skills, until the patient abruptly goes into ventricular fibrillation and dies on the table. Stunned, Newman must inform the patient's father who refuses an autopsy and within hours is suing Newman and the hospital for the death. Pandora's Box is opened, and because Newman is an astute thinker, he ponders every aspect of the case, looking for the cause of the surprising death, only to discover that similar deaths plus autopsy refusals plus law suits AND fairly new life insurance policies taken out by the families of the deceased create a startling pattern. Research on the internet, email communication with other anesthesiologists (one of whom has a brother who is connected with the FBI), and interaction with the hospitals, insurance companies, and lawyers open the pathway to discover a unique mode of fundraising for terrorist organizations: 'suicide bombers' in the form of freshly tattooed young men with savvy knowledge as to medication interactions come sharply into focus!
While there are many post 911 terrorist suspense thrillers on the bookshelves, Neuschatz has cornered a topic that is not only compelling, but also one that is delivered in a writing style that makes it wholly convincing. This is his first novel and in addition to Neuschatz' already present ability to use 'medical speak' in a manner that is sophisticated and never 'dumbs down' the reader, and to blend tense reality atmosphere with a good natured sense of humor when appropriate, he does encounter some problems that experience will easily alter. Some of the OR characters need to be fleshed out to allow the reader some insights that seem to belong solely to Newman; the timing of the last third of the novel seems to drop the tension in favor of making sure the reader gets exposure to Newman's love life with his wife; and there are too many typos that cry for an astute editor's eye. But these are minor considerations when the impact of this immensely interesting and conceived page-turner is addressed. Neuschatz has a sparkling wit and enviable vocabulary and knows how to unfold a storyline as well as many of the best authors out there. Let's hope there will be more novels from him! Customer Reviews:
Super Boston Crime Novel.......2006-12-04
Margaret McLean's UNDER OATH is an excellent first novel from a former prosecutor who knows the workings of the criminal courts inside and out. The courtroom segments of the book are by far the best, as the action takes place against the backdrop of the murder trial of two hoodlums from Charlestown, Massachusetts. The victim was from the same neighborhood as the accused Malone brothers, and the legendary "code of silence" is always in the background as the trial unfolds. Malone thugs fiendishly locate and silence government witnesses before they can testify, and the victim's sister finds herself partnered with the chief detective as they attempt to undo the damage done to the prosecution's case. McLean's legal expertise and experience are evident throughout the book, ranging from an insolent bailiff to a biased juror, and by the book's suspense-filled end the reader will agree with one character's observation that "The law is far from logical". Part ALL SOULS and part BLACK MASS, McLean has written a worthy addition to Boston literature and I hope we see more of her work.
Great courtroom drama.......2006-03-23
I was very impressed with Margaret McLean's ability to captivate the reader during long courtroom processes. She also captures perfectly the Charlestown/Boston inflections of speach, and makes the dialogue completely believable.
Witnesses deaths might have been presented with a little more mystery, drama and excitement, but overall I enjoyed Ms McLean's book tremendously.
Since I am a citizen of the author's hometown and a frequent visitor to the Boston area, I was especially anxious to read this book; and will certainly look forward to her next work.
Good trial thriller.......2005-01-01
Rebeccasreads highly recommends UNDER OATH as a legal mystery that is also a courtroom thriller of the first order. Margaret McLean, an erstwhile criminal prosecutor & Assistant District Attorney, puts to excellent use her trial experiences as background in this superb tale about a high profile murder trial.
Presenting the case of two brothers accused of killing an FBI informant is a seasoned prosecutor; up against him is a flamboyant & cunning defense lawyer. What follows is fine courtroom action.
UNDER OATH is a great legal read, right up there with ANATOMY OF A MURDER & TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, & we look forward to more from this lawyer-cum-author.
Haven't read it yet but...........2004-12-16
my sister has and loved it. She may be a bit biased though as and there is a character based on her as she was college roommates with Margaret!
Utterly compelling from cover to cover.......2004-12-06
Written by a former Assistant District Attorney with hundreds of criminal cases to her personal experience, Under Oath is a gripping and dramatic crime novel of the struggle to see justice done. A legal thriller following a murder and conspiracy trial in which jurors are intimidated, witnesses are killed and FBI cover-ups obfuscate the truth, Under Oath is haunting in its eerie accuracy and solid grounding in real-life courtroom experience. Utterly compelling from cover to cover.

Book Description
The essays bring to contemporary debates about educational research both a first hand familiarity with the practices and arguments of the educational research community and a clear grasp of the ways in which philosophical sources and analysis can inform them. They are both measured and passionate - sparked by an intense personal curiosity, which takes Bridges into unexpected resources and territory (such as the insights of museology into debates on educational research as narrative fiction) as well as more familiar material relating to, for example, issues about the assessment of quality of educational research and the concern for its relevance. The book makes an articulate case, by its own example as well as in its argument, for the continuing contribution of philosophical thinking to the development and critique of educational research. It will be essential reading for researchers already engaged in this development and for masters and doctoral students who are coming to terms with educational research, and it offers a contribution to the literature in philosophy of education which is richly grounded in the wider field of educational research.
