Book Description

J. Franklin Dyer’s journal offers a rare perspective on three years of the Civil War as seen through the eyes of a surgeon at the front. The journal, taken from letters written to his wife, Maria, describes in lengthy and colorful detail the daily life of a doctor who began as a regimental surgeon in the Nineteenth Massachusetts Volunteers and was promoted to acting medical director of the Second Corps, Army of the Potomac.

This firsthand account traces Dyer’s attempts to manage his Gloucester household even as the Second Corps fought on the Peninsula, at Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and from the Wilderness to Petersburg. Over time his letters to his wife become fraught with the tension of a man losing his early martial ardor as he witnesses the ghastly procession of suffering and death.

Both a talented surgeon and a careful administrator, Dyer nevertheless declined opportunities to work at hospitals in the rear in order to stay near his old regiment and the fighting. He confronted the aftermath of battle—thousands of wounded and dying men—with a small staff and simple instruments. He and his fellow surgeons saved lives as best they could—often at the cost of amputated limbs—then dropped to the ground from exhaustion and slept in blood-drenched uniforms until the cries of the wounded woke them and induced them back to work. Dyer also provides a glimpse of the most devastating opponent the armies faced: disease. He and his medical colleagues fought cholera, typhus, dysentery, measles, and, despite official denials in Washington , a scurvy outbreak that weakened Federal units during the Peninsula campaign.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting viewpoint.......2007-02-21

A great read for anyone interested in the innerworkings of the Army of the Potomac. Dyer served closely with Gens. Hancock, Gibbon, Hooker, and Howard, giving pesonal insight to these men. He also goes into the lives to the fighing soldier in great detail. Being a top-notch surgeon, the men are always on the forefront of his mind. Dyer works tirelessly for the care and well being of the men. He is especially interested in making sure the men get vegetables, as Dyer is recognized as the first to realize that scurvy is a major problem in the Army. Perfect for anyone interested in how the medical corp oppereated from battlefield care, to the ambulence corp, to division hospitals up to to the large hospitals of the north. Tactfully edited by Chesson.

5 out of 5 stars A very interesting book on a Civil War Surgeon.......2000-03-30

    To all,

This book is diary with much detailed about the life of a 42 year old (pretty old back then) Surgeon (1st Lt...thus a acting assistant surgeon) in the Army of the Potomac in 1862 to 1863. A very interesting story is when his is captured by CSA forces in battle. A CSA soldiers also comes up to him (he is looking for wounded) and tried to shoot him at point blank range. A misfire saved his life. Later, R.E. Lee returns his personal item and lets him return to Yankee lines.

A bit slow at times for for history buffs or reenactors (I play a Union Surgeon in the ACWA.org), then a grand book indeed.

    Sincerely,

I remain your humble servant, Major Arthur Henrick.

      5 out of 5 stars Book Description.......2001-02-06

Dr. Harvey Black, grandson of one of the founders of Blacksburg, Virginia, served as surgeon of the 4th Virginia Regiment, as surgeon of the Stonewall Brigade, and as surgeon in charge of the Second Corps Field Hospital of the Army of Northern Virginia. Black's Civil War letters, which begin with Stonewall Jackson's Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862 and end with Jubal Early's Valley Campaign of 1864, discuss climactic battles like Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Literate and perceptive, Black had interesting things to say about figures like Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, Jubal Early, and Thomas Rosser. The Second Corps Field Hospital was the site of the amputation of Jackson's arm at Chancellorsville, and Black was one of three surgeons who assisted Dr. Hunter McGuire in the operation. In addition to Harvey Black's letters, the book contains three letters of his wife Mollie, all that have survived. They poignantly reveal the trials Southern women faced during the war, fending for themselves and their families. The small town of Blacksburg in Appalachian Virginia also plays an important part in the story. An appendix transcribes and analyses the free and slave schedules for the 1860 Blacksburg census.

Black was a significant figure in the Civil War and postwar Virginia medicine and education. After the war, Black helped found what is today known as Virginia Tech.

              Book Description

On a somber night in July, 1863, Dr. Myron Robinson has slowly come to realize that the great assault on Fort Wagner will soon take place. As he watches the troops around their campfires eyeing the imposing fort looming in the distance, his thoughts drift back to other battles, other make-shift hospitals, and other friends lost during the last two years of war. As an army surgeon with the Connecticut Sixth Volunteers, Robinson has cut, sewn, bandaged and buried the victims of countless engagements. And, as he watches the soldiers steel their nerves for the upcoming assault, he knows there will be many more to come before the bloodshed ends.

Until now, the army surgeon's story of the Civil War has gone largely unheard. But his story, and the stories of the brave men he cared for, are tales that should be heard. Hear those tales now in Dr. Stewart J. Petrie's debut novel, "Letters and Journal of a Civil War Surgeon."

                5 out of 5 stars A Locked-Room "Whodunit" in the Sky.......2006-05-01

This is an account of Alfred Loewenstein, a 1920's-era tycoon who was involved in many high-stakes business dealings. In 1928, while flying over the English Channel from England to Brussels, he "accidentally" fell out of his airplane while using the restroom. His body was recovered several weeks later and he was buried in an unmarked grave, and the world went on.

The author does some research and establishes that it is very unlikely that Loewenstein could have "accidentally" fallen out the door of the plane. Even if he had intended to commit suicide, it would have taken superhuman effort to force open the door in order to get outside, due to wind resistance. The author examines a museum exhibit of the plane, interviews people who flew it, reconstructs Loewenstein's business dealings, interviews people with memories of the time, and develops a theory about how and why Loewenstein really fell from the plane. The author does not have all the answers but leaves the verdict to the reader, or perhaps to future researchers. Certainly he has raised "reasonable doubt" about the "accident" conclusion.

Since most of the people involved have taken the secret to their graves, the truth will probably never be known. But this book is a fascinating glimpse into the social strata of the moneyed class of the 1920's just before the stock market crash.

I also feel that the author did not mention another very plausible way for the act to have occurred - if the pilot had momentarily rotated the plane onto its left side, Loewenstein would have simply dropped down from the lavatory through the door, like a bomb from a bomb rack.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! 1920's High Society, High Finance, .........2004-03-20

..Aviation History, and a very mysterious flying death 4000 feet over the English Channel on July 4, 1928. The author researches this strange death, the history of the times, some incredible stock market wheeling and dealing, and the personality and activities of Alfred Lowenstein. A great ride that opens up a mysterious case, and some speculative "who done it" answers. I think it was an accident, but this is a great ride with the author that you'll be glad you read!

This is a book full of contradictions. The few gems inside are hardly worth the price. Just to give a few-- on one hand he says spend most of your time with your bigger clients. Then talks about how great service he gives "all" his clients. Then says, some large clients don't want a lot of your time. I have been in sales all my life, moving into training and coaching. I never had a B client develop into an A, without time and effort. He goes on about being a "professional visitor", if you aren't in the office with the desire to close something. You call this soft selling? And how a sale should be 3 calls and 3 calls alone, meeting, proposal and close. Or you are doing something wrong. The bigger and more complex the sale the longer the sales cycle may be. Consultative selling takes as long as required to find the right solution. Most sales people quit after the 3rd attempt and if they're following this advice I can see why. Please let me know which salespeople are following this advice so I can go behind them and sweep up those commissions.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!!! Awesome help for anyone trying to increase their sales power........2006-07-25

Straight forward advise. No gimmicks. Just very sound how to information on how the sales process works, and how to navigate within it. Very useful for all sales positions. Whether it be telemarketing or corporate sales or network marketing, this book will increase your ease of selling through mastery of the sales process.

Also, very interesting take on buying motives. The author is an advocate of the "we buy from want not need" consumer mindset. This of course flies in the face of the "uncover the hidden need (pain) sales philosophy and focuses squarely on want as the true emotional basis for buying. It just shows this fellow has experience and knows exactly what he's talking about. Buy this book. You'll be very glad you did.

PS. The recommended reading list suggested by the author is worth the price of the book by itself. No joke. I'm trying to help you here---buy the book!

5 out of 5 stars Far and away the best sales book I've ever bought.......2006-03-11

In his opening paragraphs Tim says that only 5 percent of his readers will attempt do anything permanent with the material covered, and that these 5 percent already know who they are. He goes on that the book is written for the other 95%, and that his goal is to get under my skin, be a thorn in my side, and make me uncomfortable with myself and my progress. If change is to take place it must come from within me, not from books, family, my work environment or some other outside force.

And it worked for me! I felt somewhat depressed and apathetic about my situation going in, but now have a clearer perspective on my issues and an action plan for moving forwards.

I've got about 20 sales books in my business bookshelf; some (Socratic Selling, SPIN Selling) address listening and questioning skills, others (How to make friends and influence people) address attitude, others (Strategic Selling) address organization, tactics and closing. This is far and away the best!

Soft Sell contains adequate coverage of all the topics in my other books, extracting the perls of wisdom of these other books, explaining them clearly and concisely and telling you where to go for more detail. Reading Soft Sell was like taking inventory of my sales skills to determine what is working best and what might need improvement. It also contains the tools necessary to pursue improvements. And it was also (for me) a positive attitude adjustment.

There is so much compressed and valuable content in the 248 pages of this book that I am sure I will return to it many times.

5 out of 5 stars Best Resource On Sales.......2005-10-18

This is the best resource book on sales I have ever come across. When I started sales, I knew absolutely nothing... and I struggled for years.

I read other sales books, but I never quite got it.

Until I read this book. This book gives you the psychology, the tactics -- and what works now.

You won't find cliched 70's style sales techniques. And you won't find hard-sell techniques. In my market, which is home businesses and Network Marketing, specifically Emerald Passport, the hard sell does not work anymore.

This does -- and if you read this book -- and apply it -- I'm sure you will have the same success I am having. And let me tell you that as soon as you realize you need to learn how to sell and actually begin to learn, you will feel relief as your self-confidence goes up.

But perhaps more importantly, once you learn how to sell, you will not fear for your family because you will know that no matter what happnes, you will be able to provide for your family.

5 out of 5 stars Lots here to learn from.......2003-09-30

There is probably more here than most people need or can handle all at once. I'd going to guess I'll probably get more out of this book in a second reading some time in the future. However, that being said, I give a strong recommendation to this book to any in a selling career.

There is common selling advice here, but there is also items with a twist from the authors point of view. Every bit helps. There is something here that would make it worth reading for almost any sales professional or manager.

Another great thing in this book is a long list of recommended reading. These types of lists, when complied by someone trustworthy, are often worth there weight in gold. I plan on checking out some of his recommendations myself.

There is a lot here on setting goals and planning out the future. I am not big on "filling out the forms", however I recognize the importance of what it is that he is trying to get across here. Perhaps in my future I'll be more disciplined in this area.

The handling objections portion of the book is worth the price of owning it. Remember that it only takes one tip or bit of advice for a book like this to pay off in a big way. I give it a strong recommendation.
