Book Description
Since the 1960s many biblical scholars have studied the Bible with a focus on gender. Yet such research is only slowly reaching a wide audience beyond the academy. Seven years in the making, centuries overdue, Women in Scripture is the groundbreaking work that will finally open this field to readers of all backgrounds -- Jews, Christians, and everyone fascinated by a body of literature that has exerted a singular influence on Western civilization. The editors have taken on the ambitious task of identifying every woman and group of women mentioned in the Bible, whether named or unnamed, well known or heretofore not known at all. The result is more than eight hundred articles, written by the finest scholars in the field, that examine the numerous women who have often been obscured by the androcentric nature of the biblical record and by centuries of translation and interpretation that have paid little or no attention to them. At last, Women in Scripture gives these women their due. They are remarkably varied -- from prophets to prostitutes, military heroines to musicians, deacons to dancers, widows to wet nurses, rulers to slaves. There are familiar faces, such as Eve, Judith, and Mary, seen anew with the full benefit of the most up-to-date results of biblical scholarship. But the most innovative aspect of this book is the section devoted to the many women who in the scriptures do not even have names. Both in scope and accessibility, Women in Scripture is an exceptional work. Combining rigorous scholarship with engaging prose, each of these articles on women in the Hebrew Bible, the Apocryphal/Deuterocanonical Books, and the New Testament will inform, delight, and challenge readers interested in the Bible, scholars and laypeople alike. Together, these articles create a volume that takes the study of women in the Bible to a new level.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful reference book!.......2006-07-04
I regularly conduct Bible workshops on the topic of Women Prophets and frequently recommend this dictionary to my audiences. This book is easy to use and is an update of the classic by Edith Deen.
Bible-chicks rule!.......2001-12-17
This is not as specialized a reference work as you would suspect from the title. The six introductory articles are among the best I have read on the development of the canon, hermeneutics, and the status of biblical scholarship. These run a mere ten or sixteen columns each, yet feel comprehensive. They reveal the editors' infatutuation with statistical information (numbers of male named in the Bible vs. the number of females; the number of named women vs. the number of unnamed women; names that recur most frequently, etc.), and their interest in exploring what these statistics hint at. Clearly the editors and authors enjoyed creating this landmark publication. While the authors are not timid scholars, they seem to know when they have reached a dead end or hit an informational barrier. When the Bible is silent on an issue, they are comfortable acknowledging it.
Also worth praising is the organization of the book. Part I consists of all the women named in the Bible (including the Deuterocanonical/Apocryphal books) in alphabetical order; Part II lists all the unnamed women (or groups of women, such as, "Daughters of Lot" and "Women at Vashti's Banquet") in Bible book order (following the NRSV sequencing) by their earliest significant Scripture reference; Part III, perhaps the most fascinating section, is a compilation of female deities and personifications (such as, "Asherah/Asherim," "Female Images of God in the Hebrew Bible," "Woman Wisdom," and "No 'Male and Female' in Christ Jesus"). While great care has been made in providing cross-referencing, there is no general index to the volume. Readers will need to be very intuitive (and perhaps keep a concordance handy) if they want to find entries in Part II (the largest section of the book) by any method other than Bible book order. The volume is completed by an annotated listing of "Additional Ancient Sources," which directs the reader to some important texts that never made it successfully through the maze known as canonization, but which are sure to provide some interesting information on the status and role of women at different points in the ancient world.
a much needed resource.......2000-12-18
Women in Scripture is just the resource I have been waiting for; in one volume I can find brief, but thorough, well written articles on all the women of the Bible, which incorporate the insights of the best of contemporary critical biblical scholarship. And don't miss the introductory articles. They are worth the price of this book by themselves. This book is a must for all pastors, serious Bible students, and all laypersons interested in learning about the women of the Bible as they are presented in the Bible, not as they have been culturally presented. I highly recommend it!
An outstanding contribution to Biblical & Women's Studies........2000-06-04
Leading Biblical scholars provide the best, latest scholarship on biblical women and provides an important volume bringing together the works of over seventy scholars who provide entries on over two hundred named and six hundred unnamed women. All the women of the Bible, from deities to personifications of symbols, are represented in a fine dictionary reference.

White Dawn: An Eskimo Sage: An Eskimo Saga
ASIN: 0395788900 |
Book Description
James Houston lived among Inuit in the Canadian Arctic between 1948 and 1962. He slept in their igloos, ate raw fish and seal meat, wore skin clothing, traveled by dog team, hunted walrus, learned how to build a snowhouse, and raised a family. While doing so, he helped change the Arctic. Impressed by the natural artistic skills of the people, he encouraged the development of exhibits and sales of Inuit art in the south - sales that have brought millions of dollars to its creators. Confessions of an Igloo Dweller, a wonderful piece of storytelling, recounts Houston's fascinating and often hilarious adventures among a confident, smiling people who spoke no English. Taking readers into the heart of Inuit culture, it joins the tradition established by Fridtjof Nansen, Vilhjalmur Stefansson, and Farley Mowat. A book full of adventure and anecdote as well as the delights of art and the hazards of cold, it is illustrated with forty drawings by the author.
Customer Reviews:
I couldn't put it down.......1999-12-03
This book was a delight to read. Mr. Houston's admiration for the Inuit culture is evident on every page. Many of the passages and stories are thought provoking and educational. I especially enjoyed his descriptions of bewilderment turned to enlightenment by such unassuming teachers.
A really good book.......1999-09-09
Really enjoyable. This man's interraelationship with a disappearing culture and the hurdles he faced in the Arctic wilderness are tangible and detailed. Mostly this book is about a youth (his own) - lost but still remembered. I read Joseph Conrad's Youth at the same time and the themes were quite similar.
"Yes, but is it Art?".......1997-08-15
First this is a book about art. If you have ever wondered how those most beautiful Eskimo sculptures and prints have found their way to your local gallery; this book tells you how.
Mr. Houston was the first artist to recognize and search out the Inuit artforms and to deliver them to the art markets "outside". In every detail, name by name, you can read about the Inuit art culture from the very first stone figures and bone scluptures, to the latest prints.
Second this is a book about Arctic. Adventure on a epic scale. Mr. Houstons' honeymoon was one of the very few trips from east to west across Baffin Island by sled. Mr and Mrs. Houston spent years in the Arctic living in the Inuit way; both their sons spoke Inuktitut in preference to English and preferred raw seal meat to... well that was all there was to eat.
Sadly there are in this book no prints of the Inuit art, nor photos of the artists, nor any example of the art described in the text. For all the journeys by sled, boat, plane, and on foot there are no suitable maps. For a book about a culture that is so completely linked to geography, there are no maps for the reader to follow nor plates for the art lover to love.
The most astonsihing event of the book occurs on page 9. A very young Mr. Houston steps off of a plane in the Hudson's Bay Arctic, looks around, and flatly refuses to live any place else; He stays for 15 years.
You can add Mr. Houston to the list with Barry Lopez, William Vollmann , Farley Mowat, and John McPhee; thoes writers that get the Arctic Expericence
Gripping, non-judgemental, true-life narrative........1997-06-12
This is one of the finest first-person, historical
narratives I've read for many years. Mr. Houston
provides a unique, non-judgemental series of
observations and first-hand stories about the
Inuit and his own experiences living among them
and working with them and, most importantly,
learning from them.
He is very honest in relating his own foibles
and potentially life-threatening mistakes. His
style is very easy to read and personal and I could not put this book down after starting it.
Mr. Houston lived a highly privileged and unique
life among a pre-literate but very evolved group
during a crucial turning point for their culture.
This is a rare and wonderful narrative.

Architecture and Construction.......2000-07-13
Architecture and Construction is the tenth issue of Scholastic's voyages of discovery. It is excellent for children to learn the different works of architecture around the world. It also shows how the structures were made and stories about famous architects.
This book shows all kinds of architectural monuments. From Paris pyramids to icy igloos, from Parthenon pillars to building bridges, this book is definetly one you have to buy!
This book covers architecture works from six of the seven world continents. It also shows the different kinds of houses in the world and many tall skyscrapers. You also get a free 1883 newspaper article marking the celebrations for the Brooklyn Bridge.
This fabulous book would appeal to people in the age group of 6 to 13. You have to buy it!

Great as an Interactive Text For Young Children.......2007-03-09
This is an interesting book for 3rd or 4th grade children, but the book really shines at a much younger age. This would be a good book for parents to read to children. The book shows a father and son working together in a harsh environment. Although photographed in black & white, the pictures are artistic and carry the theme faithfully. Nearly every page could be a conversation piece. The child will come away with new information that may remain in the consciousness for years and the parent will come away from a time of conversational bonding.
beautiful, informative, for all ages.......2004-06-30
This lovely book reveals the igloo-building process through striking black & white photos and a simple, clear narrative. I recently obtained this book for use with a group of four-year-olds. The book was a hit with the kids, and to my surprise, I enjoyed it even more than they did. The high contrast, sharply detailed photos show just how these fascinating structures go together. The pictures and narrative both communicate respect for the skill and hard work of the Inuit builders, a father-and-son team. I heartily recommend this book to teachers, parents, and children, and also to those interested in documentary photography.

Excellent reading for anyone interested in Native Americans........1999-08-09
I have read this book many times and found it to be an outstanding collection of short stories about Native Alaskans' traditions, folklore and religion. The book contains many short stories that are centuries old. The author has done an excellent job of gathering these stories into a volume that incorporates beautiful drawings by Alaskan native George Aden Ahgupuk. I would recommend that anyone interested in Native Alaskan folklore obtain this book. The book continues to provide me with many hours of satisfaction. An excellent book 'written' by authors who will never be heard from again.

Book Description
A look at the fascinating shelters that Native communities in the Far North built, using only materials their environment provided: snow, stone, sod, skin, bones, and any driftwood picked up along the shores. Black-and-white and color drawings show the tools used, and how the snow house, the quarmang, the Alaskan sod-house, and the tent or tupiq were built. And of course, there’s information on the classic snow igloo which could be constructed in a few hours for emergency shelter.

Book Description
A young boy from Texas grows up without ever knowing the strange circumstances that paired his mother and father and without even knowing who they are. At the orphanage where he grows up,, he is told "If anyone loved you, you wouldn't be here." Small wonder that Buster Krebs finds little in his life to which he is attached, and small wonder that he will sell his soul to the highest bidder. When Buster Krebs becomes an employee of the Boone Army Depot in central Kentucky, his past life remains shrouded in mystery, but through a series of random and not so random events, he holds the fate of an entire county in his weather beaten hands.
This novel warns of what can happen when do-gooders of all stripes converge in an explosive situation in which each promotes his own agenda regardless of right or wrong. Attitudes toward government, self-determination, and how a city sees itself as well as the emotional issues including the role of religion in politics are all presented through the eyes of a wide range of individuals who struggle with what to do with tons of nerve gas that are rapidly deteriorating and how and where they should be destroyed.

Dr. Kwiterovich has seen things that are painful to even read about, things like young adults with orange protrusions the size of baseballs growing on their elbows because of super-high cholesterol levels. But from such experiences at the extremes, he has come to understand heart disease as few others do. The Johns Hopkins Complete Guide is indispensable for people who are at risk of early heart attack: people with high cholesterol levels, a family history of early deaths from heart disease, sedentary lives, and/or bad health habits such as smoking. Even if you have no reason to think you're in that club, you may find the chapters on diet and nutrition fascinating, especially with all the mythology circulating about the magic of fish oils (he's for eating fish, against fish-oil supplements). But if you do have heart-disease risk factors, you'll find crucial information here: not only thorough explanations of the connection between cholesterol and heart attacks, but also a cholesterol-lowering diet with recipes. --Lou Schuler
