      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Photography.......2006-09-18

I'm a bit biased as one of my relatives is "featured" in one chapter of this but...

The photography is extraordinary, and the format and printing is very nice. This is an excellent photograhic review of life as a reconnasaince man during the war.

We enjoyed this book as it allowed my family member to finally have a touch point to talk about his WWII experience. The photos are well done, and not graphic, so it is also an excellent book for older kids (8+).

      5 out of 5 stars nicely done.......2006-09-05

I bought this book for my father. The pictures shown and stories told are a remarkabe account of this time in history. You get a first hand look at what went on during the war. It is a great gift for anyone interested in history or WWII.

5 out of 5 stars Tiger Joe Review.......2006-07-10

This book is likely destined to be a collector's item. Only 1000 books have been produced so all in circulation are 1st or 2nd edition. Tiger Joe Thompson has one of the most complete photographic and historical, WWII publications available. Many of the photographs are in large format (the book is 11X14) and the stories put a face on this war of wars.

4 out of 5 stars Historical Fiction Book Review.......2007-03-16

Bombing! Bombing! Find shelter, run for your life! There are twin boys named Harry and Max Kelso who fought in World War II. Growing up, their father, Jack Kelso, was a fighter pilot for the United States. After their father dies in a car accident, their mother and grandfather decide to split the boys apart. Max would go with his mother to live in Germany and Harry would stay with his grandfather in Boston. Both brothers grow up to be fighter pilots just like their father. Surprisingly, Max becomes a pilot for Germany, and Harry for Britain. After Harry is captured by Nazi troops, Max decides to rescue his twin brother. I recommend this book to teenagers who love to read historical fiction novels.

One reason why I enjoyed reading this book is because it kept me on my toes. For example, when Max and Harry fly out at the same time and almost demolish each other's planes. Also, when Max begins to bomb British bases where Harry is located, I was petrified that he would kill his own brother. In addition, Harry is captured by the Nazi forces and is put into jail. I was really afraid that Max and Harry would never be able to see each other again.

This historical fiction book makes you feel as though you are living every moment of the characters' lives. Like during Jack Kelso's funeral, you could feel the grief from the family. In addition, when the two brothers are separated as teenagers, I could feel the disappointment and the melancholy in each of the brothers' hearts. Last, Harry destroys three planes that have to make emergency landings. I felt his determination and concentration in trying to be an incredible fighter pilot just his father.

Finally, this book teaches you a great deal of historical knowledge about World War II. For instance, it explains what it was like to live in Britain and Germany during that time. Also, it describes how much training it took to become a fighter pilot. In addition, the novel helps you to learn what it was like to have bombs falling from the sky where you live and always having to be on alert. Not only does this book tell a story, it also provides numerous World War II facts.

Flight of Eagles is a remarkable book to read. It is adventurous and fast paced. Also, it provides a great description of the World War II time period. It's astonishing and tells a significant story of two caring twin brothers. Any teenager interested in historical fiction books should read Flight of Eagles.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome WWII Story.......2006-08-26

Jack Higgins tells the amazing story of Max and Harry Kelso, identical twin brothers of German-American descent. In World War I, their father, Jack Kelso, flew for the Royal British Flying Corps. He fell in love with his German nurse, Baroness Elsa Von Halder, while hospitalized after his plane was shot down, and married her and sent her to live with his father in the United States. She bore him twins Max and Harry, and after Jack's death wanted to return to Germany with them. The boys' grandfather was rather fond of them and talked Elsa into leaving the younger twin in the United States with him, so Harry was raised as an American, and Max became Baron Von Halder in Germany. Both boys loved to fly as much as their father had, and when World War II broke out, Harry volunteered for the RAF while Max climbed the ranks in the Luftwaffe. Over the years, Max and Harry crossed paths a few times, sometimes unwittingly, until suddenly their combined fates have an impact on the outcome of the war. By Harry's side throughout the story is Tarquin the teddy bear, dressed in a flight suit and wearing pilot's wings. Tarquin flew with Jack Kelso on every flight in the First World War, and took up his post in the cockpit again during the Second World War with Harry. It is enigmatic Tarquin who sets off the events in this story.

Though time is not taken to delve deeply into the thoughts and feelings of the characters, the story is so compelling, and so well-woven, it didn't really matter. I came to care about everyone in this story, especially the heartbreaking Kelso twins. The story moves from Harry's life and contacts in Britain to Max and Elsa's story in Germany in such a way that I practically felt I was there. The whole time the story ambles along, events are in motion on both sides of the war that slowly, inexorably come to a head. By that time, the pages were turning themselves.

This is the first novel by Mr. Higgins that I have read, and I will definitely be reading more. Putting a unique perspective on World War II and the people involved in it from the top brass to the barmaids who serve them on both sides, both big and small characters alike come to life while history unfolds from the cockpit of a fighter plane. This is an excellent book for World War II buffs and action fans alike.

      2 out of 5 stars Pleasantly dull.......2006-04-27

I'm not a great writer so I'm a little reluctant to criticize someone else but this was really a dull read. I felt like the author wrote it over a weekend, between walking the dog and dining with friends. Don't get me wrong, there's something about WWII espionage-type books that pull me in, and I enjoyed sections of this one, but the shallow characters and unbelievable story (why, exactly, were all these generals and assorted bigshots always so eager to allow Harry Kelso into their cirle?) made me feel as though the author never really tried very hard. By the time I was 2/3 of the way through the book I was very happy I had got at the library and not spent money on it.

5 out of 5 stars Flight of the Eagles.......2005-05-17

This was absolutely the best book I have ever read. I can read and 350 page book and be done with it in about a day, but this book was different. I could not set this book down. I read it in the morning, in school, at home, and in bed. I felt like I was living the story as I read page after page. From the very beginning, the pages were packed with excitement, adventure, true facts about WWII, and a little romance mixed in. I loved this book so much, I read it 5 times, and wrote 3 reports about it for school. If you are looking for a good read, this is most definantly the book for you.

                    Book Description

ith the same warmth, sensitivity, and depth that made her books What's Heaven? and What's Wrong with Timmy? so successful, bestselling author Maria Shriver delves into another difficult issue confronting families across the country-Alzheimer's disease, and the onset of memory loss in the aging. Through the inspiring story of young Kate and her grandpa, adults can teach and comfort children trying to understand what's happening to their elderly loved ones. Kate, the same young heroine of the New York Times bestsellers, What's Heaven? and What's Wrong With Timmy?, has always adored her grandpa's storytelling-but lately, he's repeating the same stories and asking the same questions again and again. One day, when he forgets Kate's name, she knows she must find out what's happening to grandpa. Her mother's patient explanations open Kate's eyes to what so many of the elderly must confront. Determined to support her grandfather, she explores ways to help him-and herself-cope with the changes. Together, they create a photo album, and Kate writes down the many stories of her grandpa's incredible life. The memories, and the bond they've forged, will be in their hearts forever. With special insight that derives from her own father's struggle with Alzheimer's, Maria Shriver offers a touching and optimistic story that encourages awareness, acceptance, and dialogue with family and friends. Her characters' positive solutions lead readers to discover something that everyone needs-a ray of hope during troubled times.

5 out of 5 stars A SENSITIVE AND WELL WRITTEN BOOK.......2007-03-05

This is a very sensitive book addressing the horrible problems when a loved one is diagnoses with Alzheimer's Disease. The book is seen through the eyes of a child, a questioning child and the answers provided are quite good. This is a well done work and covers issues which, at times, can be diffiult to address with the young child. I not that this paricular work is probably being down graded somewhat due to the fact that the author is a celebrity, of sorts. I will be the first to state that many of the "celebrity written books" are indeed pure garbage and that just because they look good in front of a camera, does not make them an expert on just about any thing. (Actually, generally speaking, as a group, they are just about the most clueless folks we have in our society). In this case though, Shriver has indeed done her research and does indeed pull it off and the work shoud not be judged on just what the author does for a living. All in all, recommend this one highly.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and very touching.......2005-08-06

Families can struggle with teaching children about aging and illness, especially when it hits so close to home with grandparents. Ms. Shriver has succeeded in putting all the sensitive feelings and thoughts that naturally occur when a loved ones develops Alzheimer's.
Soft watercolor pictures accompany meaningful text to describe families from all backgrounds as they begin the long and sometimes painful journey with seniors as their memories fade, they repeat themselves, can't remember things, and ask the same questions over and over.
Meant for older children, this book is a wonderful starting point to begin discussions of this topic with classes and/or your children at home.
So thorough is the coverage in this book that it even includes a wealth of additional resources in the back pages with websites and 800 #'s for further information on Alzheimer's education and aging.

4 out of 5 stars Another Resource for Alzheimer's Families.......2005-04-29

Maria Shriver's tender story is a gift to the millions of families who are struggling with a family member's diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. Shriver does an excellent job of guiding us through that initial shock and showing us ways to cope. I know from experience that the months and years that follow such a diagnosis provide innumerable opportunities for continued struggle and growth. For this reason, I wrote "Flowers for Grandpa Dan: A gentle story to help children understand Alzheimer's disease." This beautifully illustrated picture book follows a family through the entire disease process. Faced with the daily realities of the disease, Danny and his family find ways to adapt to Grandpa Dan's changing needs. Through it all, Danny learns that there is one important thing that never changes. An informational page, provided by the Alzheimer's Association, St. Louis Chapter, offers adults suggestions for helping children cope. "Flowers for Grandpa Dan" is available on Amazon.com. A portion of the proceeds is donated to the Alzheimer's Association.

3 out of 5 stars What happens to Grandpa.......2005-03-09

It is a great book for the whole family. It tells how a family deals with there Grand father who has alztimers. The girl named Kate who helps her Grand father remember things by a photo albume, the way she helps is write the stories that went with the pictures. I would give it three stars because it is not really a kids book it is more a family kind of book. But it is still a great book. And the pictures are great they are watercolors.

2 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT RESOURCE ABOUT ALZHEIMER'S FOR CHILDREN.......2004-07-02

Contrary to popular belief, Ms. Shriver's book wasn't actually the first book that was geared toward children in an attempt to help them have a better understanding about Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Ann Frantti wrote a book entitled "Grandma's Cobwebs" several years ago on this same topic. Not only does her book explain the workings of this dreadful disease, it also has a supplementary booklet that has FAQs to help parents with any questions their children may have.

Unfortunately, Dr. Frantti doesn't have the benefit of Ms. Shriver's "star power" in terms of getting publicity about "Grandma's Cobwebs," but her book is excellent.

                        Book Description

Following a vegan, raw foods diet does not mean you have to give up your favorite delicacies or condemn yourself to a life of celery and carrot sticks. As renowned raw foods chef Matt Amsden reveals in this vibrant, inspiring book, raw cuisine represents the discovery and innovative use of luscious natural ingredients. From imaginative new dishes such as cactus salad, onion bread, and spirulina pie, to tantalizing variations on everything from pizza, tacos, and cookies, to the signature "Big Matt with Cheese," Amsden's mouthwatering recipes feature soups, sauces, salads, appetizers, entrees, and even desserts.

More than a cookbook, RAWvolution is the indispensable, all-inclusive guide to the many powerful benefits of raw food. Beginning with his personal account of "How I Went Raw," Amsden shares essential advice, information, and encouragement for adopting a raw foods lifestyle. His delectable recipes are organized by type, level of difficulty, and what equipment, if any, is necessary in their creation. Accessible to both beginners and experienced cooks, RAWvolution addresses everyone from vegetarians who want to take the next step in natural cuisine, to those who simply want to diversify and improve their everyday diet.

There has never been a more important time to incorporate raw foods into your lifestyle. Raw, vegan cuisine is making news daily, providing healthy and nutritious alternatives that are changing lives. Best of all, raw food can be delicious. There is no need to sacrifice flavor for bland and boring "health" food. Enliven your senses and taste buds instead with rich, living cuisine.

4 out of 5 stars Rawvolution, Great pics! Not too sure about recipes..........2007-10-11

I really love the "look' of this book. The styling and photography is so great that they inspire me to make these recipes. The chart at the start of each recipe easily indicates if a blender, or dehydrator, etc. is necc. That is very user friendly with raw food recipes . Liked that.

I did try my first recipe today, Cheese Pierogis. I do have to agree with some people here, it was too salty! It was also the wrong 'shell' choice for Pierogis,(jicama thinly sliced)did not work at all. However I can adapt this recipe and it will work .

Even with my pierogi disaster,I really have to say I do love the look of this book. Its 'eye candy '. Which is a big part of the appeal of eating raw foods, for me. The lay out is gorgeous and the recipes really do look simple .Simplicity totally motivates me to prepare them, (despite having to tweek them).

I am actually really glad I bought this book. There are some really pretty raw cooking books,ie Charlie Trotters/Roxanne, etc but they are much more complicated! There are some other raw recipe books that have a terrible look but great recipes.Food being visual, reading them can just be quite dull.

One last thing, a really great looking raw cook book I have loved over the years and given as presents is;'The Raw Food Primer'by Chef Suzanne Alex Ferrara. She's also an artist and the book is small and beautiful. Desert recipes (and more) that are soooo good.I love them and my 'non raw food" friends and family really like them!

                        1 out of 5 stars Major Disappointment.......2007-08-31

I am so disappointed in this book. I had high hopes based on the other reviews, however I was really dismayed to find that the book was basically just an advertisement for the author's other businesses- the cafe and at home food delivery, as well as the over-abundance of photos of the author. SAVE YOUR MONEY. The recipes are very very salty due to his overuse of soy, and, quite frankly. not that imaginitive. There are much better cookbooks available for those interested in raw food diets. Save your money!

1 out of 5 stars Save your money.......2007-08-19

This cookbook was a huge disappointment. First of all, the directions were severely lacking - for example, recipes may call for nuts, but do not indicate whether they should be soaked or unsoaked, which can really change the ultimate outcome of the recipe, as well as greatly alter the volume of the ingredient that is needed. Second of all, I found all recipes to be completely uninspired and lacking in culinary creativity. Sure, any dessert will taste good if you slather it in agave nectar, but that is about as tasty as this one gets. Mr. Amsden is not a chef. Proof of this shows through in his recipes for all entrees and sides, as he relys mostly on nama shoyu soy sauce and garlic to try to make his foods palatable. As a result, foods are salty and pungent, yet lacking real flavor. At the end of the book is Mr. Amsden's real reason for publishing this book - to promote his cafe and food delivery service. Again, save your money - I thought maybe I had screwed up the recipes and decided to check out how they are supposed to be prepared. I hadn't screwed up. They are just really bad. It seems like the true purpose of this book was just to make a quick buck for the author, since the recipes reflect a lack of understanding in raw food preparation. Save your money and instead spend it on "Raw Food Made Easy" by Jennifer Cornbleet - a much better choice for the raw food cook.

5 out of 5 stars BEST Raw Foods cookbook.......2007-07-07

I cured a number of ailments by going raw (RA, Lupus symptoms, two rashes--one the dermatologist said was not curable and lost my last 20 pounds of baby weight) and checked out dozens of cookbooks from the library to get me started.
The recipes were filled with exotic ingredients that I wasn't going to buy in case I hated the finished product and would be stuck with these things. They were expensive too and shipping made them worse.
Matt Amsden wrote a cookbook that is so easy to read with codes for how things are prepared, the difficulty level, pictures of each one and using readily available ingredients. He even thought to put the page numbers right in the middle of the edge so they can be found without any hassle.
I've tried lots of his recipes and ALL of them are fabulous! I've even made substitutions and those turned out great too.
My only complaint is that there are too many photos of him. They are totally unnecessary. If you can look past that, it's a great book. I even like it better than the Cafe Gratitude one that I also got from Amazon.

This is a great book for those who want a quick, healthy meal that looks good and taste YUMM too. Bought this book for my daughter who has been doing the "raw lifestyle" for 2 years now. She loves all the easy to make recipes. Angela Elliott(the Author) makes the process so easy that even a person who can't find herself around the kitchen (like my daughter) could even create a great looking meal. Gourmet without the works. What a concept.

2 out of 5 stars You call this gourmet?.......2007-03-27

I think the title of this book is quite misleading. I'm giving it two stars because I think the author is representing it as something it's not: "gourmet food".

While the recipes are not complicated, most of them are far TOO simple. Over and over, I kept asking myself, "for THIS I need a recipe book??" For example, "Cucumber Pizza", which sounds intriguing, is nothing more than chopped olives on slices of cucumber. "Scrambled Eggs", which sounds like something you wouldn't find in any ordinary raw food recipe book is -- are you ready for this? -- 3 ripe avocados mashed in a bowl, add salt and pepper! The "salad" recipes are the most basic of salads ... if you can chop some vegetables and lettuce into a bowl, add some lemon juice, olive oil and your favorite seasonings, you already know how to make most of the salads in this book.

There are several different nut milk recipes, each with a fancy, delicious-sounding name, but they're all the exact same recipe ... only the kind of nut you use is different.

Many of the recipes call for the pulp left over from making nut milk, and some of the soup recipes require nut milk. So unless you've taken the time to make nut milk, and have saved a supply of the pulp, you're out of luck.

One problem I have with many raw food recipe books is the inordinate amount of nuts, seeds and avocados called for. One recipe in this book calls for 5 avocados to make a dish that serves 3 people (just about all the recipes in the book make 3 servings). A taco recipe calls for 2 cups of soaked sunflower seeds in the pate', plus an avocado in the filling, and another cup of sunflower seeds to make the "sour cream" topping ... serves 3. I don't like gorging on fats, even if they are the healthy kind.

Some recipes call for coconuts, which is a no-go for me, because I don't want to have to deal with cracking coconuts and scraping out the flesh, etc. One recipe (that makes 3 servings) calls for 3 young coconuts.

I'm a big proponent of raw foods, and have a large collection of raw food recipe books. For "quick and simple" recipes, I especially like Raw Food Made Easy for 1 or 2 People, by Jennifer Cornbleet. Raw Foods for Busy People by Jordan Maerin is another favorite. But I cannot recommend Alive in 5, for all the reasons mentioned above. Perhaps if it were titled more honestly, something like "Dishes You Really Don't Need a Recipe Book For", I wouldn't have been so disappointed with it. I'm not saying there aren't some tasty combinations of foods in this book, but many of them are just TOO simple. To call it "Gourmet Meals" is misleading.

                        Book Description

WARNING: The raw food recipes in this book are so delicious they may change your life!

The phrase 'raw foods' conjures up images of food as punishment—think uncooked carrots and celery, with perhaps a spinach juice cocktail as a chaser. However, uncooked doesn’t have to mean unappetizing, as this combination cookbook and guide to the raw foods lifestyle shows. Gabrielle Chavez explains how to use the wide range of fruits, nuts, grains, vegetables, spices, and seasonings for delicious, healthful—and healing—dishes. Anytime entrees from Stuffed Portabellos with Mushroom Gravy to Thai Hazelnut Pesto are here, along with seasonal treats like Halloween Soup and basics such as Simple Sweet Bread, with ingredients expressed in both metric and American measurements. In addition to current information on raw foods’ nutritional value and success as an alternative for people with food allergies and disorders, The Raw Food Gourmet takes readers on Chavez’s personal journey as she discovers the physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits of this diet.

The book contains useful general tips about the raw lifestyle (especially tips for traveling) but the recipes are the real stars. Try the "grawnola" and your breakfast will never be boring again! This is a wonderful book by a sincere and talented author. It's definitely one of the best raw recipe books I've found.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Place to Start.......2006-05-19

This book was a great help as I started out on my raw adventures. It contains a number of easy to follow recipes which have become staples in my diet. My only problem with this book is that the table of contents is not intuitive making it hard to refer back to recipes. You need to remember that the name of that Kale dish you like is "Disappearing Kale" and won't be found in the index under K but D. If the author does a second edition PLEASE make finding recipes easier! Thanks. Note: This book has no pictures (for that try The Raw Gourmet by Nomi Shannon which is excellent). You should also be aware that many of the recipes call for the use of a food dehydrator which is a great machine but not cheap.

                        5 out of 5 stars "rawsome" book!.......2006-03-25

I like this book a lot, because it's well-written and unpretentious. There isn't any overhyped raw food propaganda or glossy photos of the author-- just recipes, and helpful advice for becoming and staying raw. Possibly the best part is the recipes contain ingredients you can actually pronounce AND find in stores.

Learn how to prepare raw and living food with a book which covers fresh foods 'still growing'. This can be as fresh as a handful of berries eaten soon after picking, or uncooked vegetables. Within 24-48 hours after picking food loses much of its freshness: LIVING IN THE RAW GOURMET tells how to set up a living and raw food kitchen and work with recipes which maximize the kitchen's emphasis on preserving living food qualities.
