A 50 Star Review.......2005-06-20
I can not recommend this book more, Tenting on the Plains by Elizabeth Bacon Custer.....and no before you wrinkle your nose that it is a camping book....think of it more as what Little House on the Prairie should have been if it was interesting....and what Tom Sawyer and Hunk Finn would have been if Mark Twain was a good writer.
This is a fabulous work, because it is first hand history of the wife of General Custer in the year after the Civil War. It is the excitement of times on a broad scale and the narrow joy of a married couple coping with life.
It honestly is a conversation between Libby, the reader with literal colorful commentary by her black maid, Eliza.
You will read how black history really was and not what is written now.
You get to see women in all their supposed helplessness at times, but when a tragedy strikes time and again their real courage and strength comes out.
I have yet to read anything from Libby whether it is her personal letters...to the absolutely heart wrenching account of the day she found out her family was slaughtered at the Little Big Horn which did not show one of the most charming and delightful personas ever to imprint upon the written word.
So as Mrs. Dockter, my 5th grade teacher always read to us after noon recess....if you have children or grandchildren....read to them...and if you have grown children get them this book as it impressed me enough to recommend it.
THIS BOOK SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING IN OUR SCHOOLS AS IT IS THAT WELL WRITTEN, MORAL, GOOD, INTERESTING and HISTORICAL.
Yesteryear actions, conflicts, and frontier history.......2003-09-14
Originally published in 1887, Tenting On The Plains is the highly recommended and well respected chronicle that Elizabeth Custer wrote describing a journey she took with her husband, General George A. Custer. The chronicle ranges from when General Custer left the Army of the Potomac in 1865 and traveled through Texas, New Orleans, and on to the western frontier. Elizabeth Custer's perspective and writings significantly helped magnify Custer's legend and fame in the eyes of the people at the time, and offers a unique view of the daily routine of life in the frontier military, as well as offering contemporary readers eye-opening descriptions of yesteryear actions, conflicts, and frontier history.

Great.......2007-01-10
This book is helpful to understand how suicide happens to people and understanding that there is nothing you can do to catch it, you realize its not your fault.
Start here sociology student.......2006-01-27
This is still considered the first book on sociological theory. Not only does Durkheim provide us with a working model to use social statistics to draw very strong inference but if one reads carefully between the lines, he provides us with theoretical rhetoric as well as the afore-mentioned practical design. Durkheim was overall pessimistic; he saw the forces of society as overwhelming to the individual and makes little or no provision for escape (unlike Marx). Suicide, in Durkheim's view, was merely a symptom of a greater sociological ill. But unlike those who had come before him, Durkheim based his sociological assertions on solid empirical evidence and helped create an entire new science, which like the "hard" sciences, was based on the collection of data and research. Next time you read a report which links household income to education attainment, or prison rates among African Americans to a never-ending drug war, remember Emile Durkheim. He was first.
The best and first tutorial to the sociology.......2004-02-06
Durkheim says at the beginning; the sociology is the current science, but nobody knows what it is. Even now, his words sound contemporary. This study aims at introducing the necessity and importance of the sociology to the public, but not at sophisticatedly professional people.
It matches the orientation of the primary students to study the sociology, because the preliminary knowledge isnft necessary. Actually, I could read this book at the first year of the university without any sociological knowledge. After finishing to read the first part, which proves that the suicide isnft the psychological phenomenon, but the sociological, you can investigate the present situation as he did in the 19th century by using the statistics of the international organization like WHO. You will find the manipulation of the statistics not only easy, but also important with Durkheimfs tutorial. It may be your first experience of the scientific study at the society.
I can recommend it to the youth.
PIONEERING WORK IN SOCIOLOGY.......2003-11-16
This is the work considered the pioneer of modern sociology, with its author hailed the father of sociology. The innovative nature of the work lies in putting together all the methods of social analysis available at his time and providing a comprehensive view of the nature of suicide in society.
Mixing quantitative and qualitative methods, Durkheim provides the basis for the future development of sociology. He brings science to the study of society, by developing a hypothesis, gathering data and testing the hypothesis. He proves the powerful influence of society on the behavior of individuals, which, though obvious today, was not a clear conclusion at the time.
This is a basic reading for anyone interested in sociology. However, anyone interested in the application of scientific methods to society and other non-traditional fields for science would also find it very useful.
Classic Sociology Text.......2003-02-17
Durkheim sometimes gets a bad rap for his politics, but this is a good book that laid the foundations for much of the sociological work that has followed it. Using the case study example of suicide rates, Durkheim undertakes to show that social structure has a profound and powerful influence on almost everything that individuals do. While the translation is sometimes awkward, Durkheim's work is impressive in its methods, ambitions, and execution. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in the hstory of sociology or just the power of social structure.

A must for those interested in understanding suicide.......2001-01-19
This landmark volume honors the 100th anniversary of the publication of Emile Durkheim's milestone book, Le Suicide, often described as one of the three most important works ever written in the social sciences. Lester and the 16 contributors evaluate and reassess the great French sociologist's contributions to social and behavioral science in the light of present-day knowledge and assumptions. Readers who wonder whether Durkheim is still relevant today, whether his work has stood the test of time, will not want to miss this centennial treasury.

Lacks detail.......2007-04-21
This book has a little less detail than its parent book. A good read for someone who wants a quick overview of nutrition and not all the details.
AN EYE OPENER...........2006-06-30
VERY comprehensive volume of work!! All the little nasty things that you wonder about what you're eating and how the industry really cares very little about your health vs. their check books. The BEST thing about it is that Doc Colgan's of a mind to back up everything he says by giving you access to whatever he tells you and let YOU FIND IT FOR YOURSELF!! A must for all those who need to know what they're putting inside their bodies....
Disappointed in Mr. Ego.......2001-07-28
I read this book on the recommendation of people I respect and was very disappointed. I was looking for good information on the best nutrition and it may be there. But the author's ego seems to have gotten in the way. This is the first book that I have ever read where the author frequently quotes HIMSELF.
According to Colgan almost everyone in the world is evil including all doctors, employees of pharmaceutical companies, and all government agencies. Fortunately we have the author to save us.
Beyond that, the information was difficult to decipher. It seemed that the recommended dosages of vitamins varied from chapter to chapter.
I have not read any of his previous books, but I am under the impression that he has run out of new things to say. And after several books, the organization and consistency should have been better.
It cured us!!!.......1999-10-28
After being diagnosed with Alopecia Areata and being told there was no known cause or cure I read this book. After adopting the diet and supplements recommended in this book the Alopecia left and has not recurred. Not to mention several other wonderful health benefits (more energy, loss of weight, peace of mind). A must for everyone, don't be fooled by the food industry or the other dollar makers that don't want you to know the truth. Many people think they are eating healthy by consuming chicken and low-fat foods, but this isn't so. Read this book and save yourself!
Best way to protect my family I've ever read!.......1999-05-24
Dr. Colgan has really woke me up. Many of us have had our heads in the sand too long. This book will give you the facts, with full references to scientific studies, that will allow you to take control of your health. Your doctor just won't tell you what Dr. Colgan will!

When Lauren Butts became a vegetarian, she had a hard time finding recipes and information to suit her needs. Sure, there were plenty of vegetarian cookbooks on the market, but they just weren't for her. Why? Because, like many new vegetarians, she was a teenager and didn't have the cooking skills, patience, or inclination to prepare fancy vegetarian meals for herself. What Butts really craved was quite simple: vegetarian versions of her standby favorites--burgers, lasagna, tacos, and stir-fries. While still in high school, she started researching her nutritional needs and how to meet them without meat. In OK, So Now You're a Vegetarian, she provides 100 recipes for simple, satisfying, and nourishing food that any teenager would love, rescuing teenage vegetarians everywhere from night after night of steamed veggies and rice. Meals such as Veggie Quesadillas, Vegetarian Potpie, and Tasty Flatbread Pizza with Olives and Artichoke Hearts should appeal to teenage vegetarians everywhere. Most of the dishes are made with ingredients easily found in any supermarket, and many rely on standard ingredients normally found in most family kitchens.
Perhaps most importantly, Butts helps teenage vegetarians navigate the sometimes bumpy road from a meat-based diet to a plant-based one. She provides definitions of the different types of vegetarians (ovo-lacto vegetarian, lacto-vegetarian, vegan, etc.), a food-guide pyramid for vegetarians, and a glossary of ingredients. Best of all, each recipe includes a complete nutritional analysis that lists quantities of such important nutrients as protein, iron, calcium, vitamin B-12, and zinc. While there aren't a whole lot of recipes in the book for vegans (those who eschew all meat and animal products, including eggs and milk products), people who are semivegetarian, ovo-lacto vegetarian, or lacto-vegetarian are sure to find plenty here to keep them as happy and well-nourished as a growing teenager ought to be. --Robin Donovan

Customer Reviews:
Essential for New Vegetarians.......2006-06-07
...especially young ones. I have now been a vegetarian for five years and rarely use this book any more but it was GREAT when I was first starting out. Lauren Butts was sixteen when she published this book and the recipes are all geared towards kids in that age group - both in simplicity and taste.
When I bought this book it was getting a lot of buzz because it had just been published by such a young author. Judging by the date of the last review, I'm guessing it has fallen off the radar. I, however, would still recommend this book to any teenage vegetarian.
The Best Vegetarian Guide on the Market!.......2005-05-23
This was the only book that interested me at the bookstore. There wasn't much selection for Vegetarian kids and I bought this book after 5 minutes of looking at it. I loved everything Lauren Butts wrote in this book, and I love the easy recipes. It was an awesome book and now I'm a vegetarian!
Easy for beginners, flavourful for the more demanding cooks.......2004-01-24
I am 13 and although I did not purchase this book from Amazon (I got it from my local boarders), I couldn't resist sharing how great it is with you. As I have it sitting next to me I'll mention some of the best recipes. (By the way I am about to become an ovo-lacto vegetarian but wanted to try some of the recipes 1st)
~First of all, my first one, brown butter ravioli w/ portobello mushrooms. I could not find pesto ravioli so I supstituted garlic and something or other (meatless of course!). They were delicious I must say.
~I have only recently had thai food where I got chicken pad thai (as I said I am not yet veggie) although they had vegetarian. Well, I loved it so imagine my delight when veggie pad thai was in this book (no thai food places near me :( I was at my cousin's)!
~Lastly, breakfast in your pocket, I have yet to try but very much want to- also I have been thinking of trying this on a croissant.
Also: Nathan's Blueberry Breakfast Cupcakes- I wanted to give them to the 5 year old I babysit for but he is allergic to like EVERYTHING so I'm afraid lol.
Overall, I love this book- A must for anyone- even non-vegetarians!
(I am an ok cook so be aware that some recipes require cooking skill)
sorry for rambling on- just so much to say
Useful Cookbook for Ovo Lacto Vegetarians.......2001-01-11
Though I am 23, older than the intended audience, my Mom bought me this book as a present. I was thrilled with it. Lauren Butts has created a fun and easy cookbook for anyone. I love the layout of the cookbook, it is divided into sections, and I enjoyed her nutritional info in the front of the book. Maybe it will inspire more teens to go veg.I found this cookbook full of great meatless recipes. I must warn strict vegetarians and vegans however, that most recipes contain dairy products, or eggs. There is a great recipe for "Nathan's Blueberry Breakfast Cupcakes", that is easy to make and tastes like store bought. However when I tried to get my three year old neighbor to eat one, he refused in horror. Other recipes that I have enjoyed making include: apricot chimichangas, Thai tofu Veggie Wrap-yum, Burrito Roll up, Veggie Pitas (Tastes the same as Wendy's veggie pita), Layered Nacho Salad, Mock Caesar Salad (in case you didn't know, Caesar Salad dressing is typically made with ANCHOVIES-fish=meat), Chilled Berry Soup-this is a fabulous recipe I made last summer when berries were plentiful, it is totally tasty and makes a great meal, TASTY FLATBREAD PIZZA WITH ARTICHOKE HEARTS!! This pizza was so unbelievably tasty, I have always been a bit wary of artichoke hearts, they just look kind of disgusting you know, but I was so shocked to discover their delicious taste!! Veggie Quesadillas were also fabulous. SPAGHETTI PIE is indeed a great dish, and I like to make it when serving non-vegetarians. It has been a hit with everyone so far. Tofu McNuggets are the absolute bomb. These recipes are only a fraction of the great ones in this book. I would highly recommend it to parents of new young vegetarians, or college students like myself who don't have that much time to cook. Some have opined that this book is full of recipes that are fattening, but I think most know, that us vegetarians are a mostly lean lot, and I can personally attest that the recipes aren't fattening. Thanks Lauren for creating a great book, it is indeed an oasis as far as Veg cookbooks go. Its great to have a cookbook that isn't full of really long, hard to find, expensive ingredients!
This is the most helpful vegitarian cookbook around........2000-08-25
I personaly know the author of this wonderful book. I went to a camp with her that helps for college credits. She is very intelligent and I have tried the food in this book. It tastes really good. The book is well thought out, easy to read and perfectly set up for any teenage vegitarian. I gave a personal review before it was published, so I do recomend this book to any teenager that is willing to cook.
