Overpriced for what you get.......2007-10-22
This book does have a lot of useful information contained within the pages but it is impossible to sit down and read it. The writing is very bland and I think it would be impossible to read it cover to cover. However I have skimmed through the entire book to get a better understanding of its contents and refer back to it from time to time during projects.
As for the online portal I agree with the other reviewer, it is not worth the price of the book. And I really didn't like that it expires after a year.
If you are even looking at this book, I assume it is required reading for a class. If that is the case, buy it used, even if you don't get the online access, it is not worth the extra money.

There is NO review material in this book. All of the review material must be accessed online. An activation code that expires after a year must be used to access any of the online review material.
My new finance books (hardback) cost only $35 more for double the number of pages, smaller print (the print size in Kotler's book looks like a freshman trying to make the minimum page length), and hundreds of exercises.
Marketing 2.0 is not worth anything close to the price. The buyer essentially receives a $115 magazine with an offer to subscribe to the publishers site.

Don't bother buying this book.......2005-11-09
I am a high-tech marketing manager and an adjunct professor. From both the real-world business side as well as the academic side, I found this book to have little value. It spends page after page on general issues regarding Internet Marketing, and never gets to anything that could be used or implemented in the business world. Topics are explained without giving specific details as to how to implement the Internet Marketing idea. A very specific example is a description of viral marketing which the author refers to as "Creating a Wave." The short section goes on to say that free media, publicity and word of mouth are important. Of course they are. But how do you get them? I feel sorry for the students that are required to purchase this book. I guess they'll have to learn Internet Marketing on the job. I'm glad I only paid $10 for this book used instead of the $90+ list price.
Very good, but dated.......2003-10-16
This is a classic. One of the most serious earlier works on the topic. Professor Hanson brought a very solid theoretical framework to Web marketing. The book came at a time when we finally all wanted to get more rigouros with the "New Economy". I perused it again recently for a seminar I am giving, and it is still an excellent reference book. I would give four stars to an updated edition. I don't know if they are planning it.

I used the first edition in one of my e-commerce courses. While the book migth still deserve 3 stars it is very much dated and my students had to do much additional research in the net to round most of the topics.
A very practical book - I love it !.......2001-05-06
This is a great book on internet marketing. Unlike many other books on similar subjects I have read , I found this book most practical - and closest to the need in the real business world ! Lots of very interesting case studies in it, and most important of all, the book contains a lot of very useful and updated researches and statistics that confirms a lot of beliefs ( and clear lots of doubts) I have had in my job. Don't be put-off by the title of the book " Principles of Internet marketing" - they are not pure academic / classroom-type "principles", they are very applicable to the real business world ! If you are working in the internet marketing area, or if you plan to enter this field, don't miss this book !!!

Useful, comprehensive contribution to a dynamic subject........1999-10-06
I wish to share with you my enthusiasm for this new book. Its arrival adds substantially to the resources available for those who wish to teach marketing using the new media and technologies.
The book has many merits. Its structure and thorough presentation of important aspects of its chosen subjects are valuable; it provides guidance on how Web and other resources can be used by marketers. It does not assume too much familiarity with the Internet, and avoids too much technical treatment of issues which are of peripheral interest to marketers. It has a clear focus on how traditional marketing tools and techniques can be complemented by resources of the Internet. The guidance for an Internet marketing plan is of special interest to us.
My main reservation is that the book is America-centric. As we move into the wired world of the new millennium it will be necessary for marketers to take a global perspective on many of the issues dealt with here. (But let us rejoice! - the Web site promises updates and developments in this area.)
That said, this is a welcome addition to a fast-changing and important subject area.
Finally, I observe that the UK paperback price at seems to be significantly lower than the USA textbook price. Enjoy!

Great book. Covers all the areas of online marketing. Very current (1999) but overpriced. I did not purchase it as a textbook so I may not see all the value in the work. It is not about getting your web site on search sites but how to market it as a brand etc. Five stars for content less one for high price. Dan

It is rare to find a systematical internet marketing book, but this is good to study to beginners. besides the end of the chapter can help us create Internet marketing plan. If you work in the marketing department, this is a little boring.

Bearden et al. take a cutting edge approach to marketing. This text continues to be a leader in the coverage of the most recent marketing thought. In the first edition, our emphasis on integrated marketing communications (Part 7) and our separate chapter on direct marketing (chapter 21) were the best examples of this competitive advantage. In addition, for the second edition we have added a focus on customer loyalty and cross-functional teams, as well as full integration of the Internet. Bearden not only talks about what marketing is, but prepares the students to be marketers by involving them in interactive exercises which strengthen decision making skills.

I picked up this book as a preparation for the CLEP marketing exam. While it is easy to read, the layout is cluttered and distracting. The authors give a rah-rah treatment to e-commerce, presenting multiple .com case studies throughout the book (each chapter begins with an internet site and description).
It is clear that the authors were infatuated with the so-called "new economy," and the book suffers a lot as a result. Using it as a primer is tiring, as you have to separate the essentials of marketing from the e-commerce cheerleading.
The publisher's website does have quizzes to test on the material, which I like, but overall, I was still somewhat disappointed.
Easy to read, but a little disappointing.......2001-09-24
I purchased this book as a primer on Marketing, as a preparatory resource for the CLEP Principles of Marketing exam (3 semester hours). The book effectively presents the basic terms and ideas in an airy, easy to read manner. Also, the book's website contains quizzes that help reinforce the information, which is greatly appreciated.
However, I was somewhat disenchanted with the content which reaches for a "futuristic" flavor and misses something in the process. In my opinion, the book concentrates too heavily on .com companies (some of which are now bankrupt and defunct) and gives an overall rah-rah treatment towards e-commerce. Anecdotes abound and are used as filler in the main text, instead of informational sidebars. Every chapter is introduced with another website URL emblazoned across the top of the page in a putrid yellow color.
Thankfully, the authors did include a paragraph or two dissuading the reader from using SPAM (unsolicited email marketing), but it was a footnote in an otherwise verbose volume. I was somewhat offended that from the context of those paragraphs, and an anecdote about one company's 12% response rate (versus 1% for direct mail) which is misleading and would probably leave marketing students thinking that spam was effective.
For what I purchased the book for, it accomplishes the goals, albeit in a verbose manner.

I used this book as an introduction to marketing at the School of Management at Syracuse University. I found the to be thought out well, layed out in a logical format and it was current with all information. It was more interesting than most text books.

Throughout the book, I have found numerous typographic errors, and poor design and layout. The "real-world" examples of different issues and topics are an asset to the text, and save it from being COMPLETELY worthless. The index is not comprehensive. and when looking for clarification of terms, it is virtually useless.
