Book Description
At last, Che on Che! Discover the personal side of the legendary Che Guevara in a way never before revealed to the world. This book includes many unpublished short stories and poems written to his wife and children, as well as photos from the Guevara family album, showing a surprisingly sensitive and artistic side to a man often seen as a hard-line revolutionary.
An enthusiastic amateur photographer, Che's self-portraits are a stunning feature of this selection along with some beautiful short stories, poems, and personal letters, which have just been released from his family's personal archives. Among the innumerable biographies and photo books on Che, this large format, attractively designed book is unique.
Edited by prominent Latin American poet and intellectual Victor Casaus, with the assistance of Che's widow and children.
Publication is planned to coincide with two new Che films (Robert Redford's film on The Motorcycle Diaries and a Steven Soderbergh biopic).
"Che was the most complete human being of our age."-Jean Paul Sartre
Customer Reviews:
Not quite what I had expected.......2007-08-01
I purchased Self Portrait because it sounded like a good biography/autobiography of Che Guevara. What the book actually is is a coffee table book, with small excerpts from Che's diaries and letters and commentary by the editor, Victor Casaus. It seems in some parts of the book that Casaus is more the author and that his words fill the pages more than Guevara's. This book has great photos of Guevara and it decorates my coffee table quite nicely, but if you are looking for a good history of Guevara, look elsewhere.
My Review on Self Portrait By Che Guevara.......2005-09-13
A very interesting way of portraying the Cuban hero through pictures. My one criticism is that the pictures at the end of the book are not captioned to tell us what they are or when they were taken.
Che on Che.......2005-04-07
This is a magnificent book... people might say that is pro-cuban biography but what we really have here is Che like the way he was... If you really want to know che this is the book you should be reading, pay no attention to the "gusanos" (the exiles from Miami that don't deserve to be called cubans)who don't like Che becuase he is a better man that all those "gusanos" put together... The reason Che will be present today and tomorrow is because his only dream was to liberate people all over the world without caring about skin color.
Hasta la victoria siempre!!!
Muerte a los "gusanos"!!!!
A Beautiful Book of Memoirs.......2005-03-20
If you are tired of the same books on Che Guevara, this is the different book. Formed by texts and images based upon Che's own life it follows mainly the same path of its biographers but in such a beautiful way it made his own daughter Aleyda (who rarely saw him) exclaim: "the photos in this book are so magnificent you feel a desire for kissing him, embracing him and keep talking to him" (she means with his own personal texts based in his own testimony).
The selection, prepared on the first hand with the remembrance of a lost love (by his widow) and on the other, by the professional eye of Victor Casaus (a Cuban cinematographer who had been many times a judge on international film competitions) you can follow Dr. Guevara from his childhood, young age, his travels, the Sierra Maestra up to his last days in Bolivia.
Sorry, no Christ figure photo (in the words of its own editor). Keep in mind this is a pro-Cuban Government book so you instead will find Fidel, but judge by yourself. My only last opinion is that if this people can produce such a book in a system so full of censorship, I do wonder what they can achieve in liberty!

A classic political memoir and biography of revolutionary and intellectual Che Guevara.......2006-08-06
Now in a new edition which includes Fidel Castro's speech on the return of Che's remains to Cuba 30 years after his assassination in Bolivia in 1967, Che: A Memoir By Fidel Castro is a classic political memoir and biography of revolutionary and intellectual Che Guevara. Che: A Memoir By Fidel Castro is not structured like a standard biography; chapters jump back and forth through time, reflecting on key events in Che's political life, his implacable struggle for transformation, his martyrdom, and his legacy. An inset section of black-and-white photographic plates round out this unique appraisal of a complex revolutionary figure (whose impact continues to inspire men and woman to political resistance and activism long after his own death), as seen through the eyes of a national leader who admires him. Students of Che's live and work would be well advised to visit the Ocean Press website for a complete listing of all their Che Guevara related titles.
Not what it may seem.......2001-09-18
Yes, Old Fidel did write this. No, he didn't sit down at his word processor and bash it out over a quiet weekend. It is a collection of Fidel's speeches, writings and interviews about Che. Some of them are very interesting. Some of them go on and on and on. This bloke can talk! It is hardly an intimate portrait, it doesn't reveal anything new, but it is still a worthwhile read - if only to highlight the relationship between Che and Fidel and the circumstances surrounding Che's disappearance from Cuba.
Inciteful..........2000-12-18
An intense and interesting look into Cuba's political sphere and also at Castro himself. Che Guevara is brought down from myth status and shown in a very human light. If only Che was still around...I know he would've solved that whole Elian Gonzalez episode...

Book Description
Korean native Sunny Che spent most of her early childhood in Japan, where she and her family were treated as outsiders. She returned to Korea, only to find herself a stranger in her homeland. This memoir is the story of her personal struggle amidst the crucial events enveloping Asia at midcentury. Part I chronicles her childhood in Japan and the beginning of the war in the Pacific. Part II describes her return to Korea, the turmoil of Korea's liberation from Japan, and the Korean War. From a schoolgirl's perspective, Che describes events both global and intimate. She depicts the alienation and chaos of war and migration, as well as the domestic trials of a family seeking not merely to survive but to hold on to their heritage. Her story is at once a unique perspective on history and a moving chronicle of her own childhood, providing a detailed picture of diverse cultures irrevocably changed by two devastating wars.

Product Description
Che Guevara (1928-1967) embodied the utopian dreams of a whole generation of left-wing theorists and activists. His burning and relentless ambitions combined with his fearlessness have all contributed to his status as a modern day political idol. This monograph describes the myth and the reality of an extraordinary and eventful life, which excites and fascinates even today.
Customer Reviews:
Portrait of a charismatic and courageous (if at times ruthless) man .......2007-08-05
Historian Frank Niess presents Che Guevara, an in-depth biography of social revolutionary Che Guevara (1928-1967) that separates myth from reality. Expertly translated from the original German by Nathaniel McBride, Che Guevara covers Guevara's upbringing, his involvement in the Cuban Revolution, his desire to spread his ideology to other nations of South America and Africa, and much more, illustrated with vintage black-and-white photographs. "Che Guevara might not have become the revered revolutionary idol he did had he been satisfied with his part in just one, namely the Cuban, revolution... He had hopes of bringing about radical political change in his own country of Argentina, and, as one would expect of a dedicated internationalist and pan-American, he dreamed of a revolution across the entire continent. Following his years of political apprenticeship in Guatemala, he had become convinced that this region would one day become one of the most important arenas of revolutionary struggle." Notes, a chronology and an index round out this in-depth portrait of a charismatic and courageous (if at times ruthless) man who dedicated his life to his beliefs.

Customer Reviews:
Fascinating.......2002-10-31
Being raised a few miles from one of the first Gennett sawmills, I found this to be one of the most interesting books I have ever read. Gennett describes in fair detail various logging practices, and the technical vernacular is even footnoted to assist the reader with terms he/she has probably never heard.
The brothers' Gennett certainly had a knack for making money, but it was always after much investigation and hard work, and certainly risk. It was interesting to me how Andrew, from the upper crust of society, rolled his sleeves up and learned the art of cruising timber and sawmilling. Accounts of the long nights in the cold camping or boarding with mountaineer families while on timber cruises and logging operations were fascinating.
Gennett's views of the long arm of Uncle Sam and issues regarding private property rights are still echoed today.
I highly recommend to this book to anyone interested in the history of the Southern Appalchians, natural resource management, logging, or the American entreprenural spirit.

Book Description
Told with humor and flair, this is the autobiography of one transsexual's wild ride from boyhood as Alfred Brevard ("Buddy") Crenshaw in rural Tennessee to voluptuous female entertainer in Hollywood. Aleshia Brevard, as she is now known, underwent transitional surgery in Los Angeles in 1962, one of the first such operations in the United States. (The famous sexual surgery pioneer Harry Benjamin himself broke the news to Brevard's parents.)
Under the stage name Lee Shaw, Brevard worked as a drag queen at Finocchio's, a San Francisco club, doing Marilyn Monroe impersonations. (Like Marilyn, she sought romance all the time and had a string of entanglements with men.) Later, she worked as a stripper in Reno and as a Playboy Bunny at the Sunset Strip hutch.
After playing opposite Don Knotts in the movie The Love God, Brevard appeared in other films and broke into TV as a regular on the Red Skelton Show. She created the role of Tex on the daytime soap opera One Life To Live. As a woman, Brevard returned to teach theater at East Tennessee State, the same university she had attended as a boy.
This memoir is a rare pre-Women's Movement account of coming to terms with gender identity. Brevard writes frankly about the degree to which she organized her life around pleasing men, and how absurd it all seems to her now.
Customer Reviews:
F!uff!.......2007-08-05
Like the Jorgensen story, another transsexual fairy tale, only racier with a jumbled (Sixties) chronology. Again, we have passability-as-destiny, fem passivity, good parents, waiting for the man, with showbiz elements. Hey, featured in Don Knots' Love God; is that camp cool, or what? Unlike Jorgensen, however, Brevard comes clean about the physical pain of SRS and the slimebags T-girls suffer to legitimate themselves. Nevertheless, her tale is told upbeat and shallow (like most TS memoirs).
Mature and Happy TS Auto.......2005-08-12
For anyone following any phase of the (MtF)TG/TS path Aleshia's story is very encouraging as it's begining is so early, or long ago, in the developement of TS/MtF transition and surgical methods and yet this fantastic individual persists and succeeds.
Aleshia's performer "fame" and film star background and experiences provide additional and enjoyable reading.
The Woman I Was Not Born to Be: A Transsexual Journey.......2004-02-01
What can i say about this book. Well It's very rare for me to read any book from cover to cover but this one had me gripped its funny and its also very sad in places. As you read the book you begin to feel like your part of what is taking place you feel like you're in the book especially if you are trans gender or you just like gender related books.
Don't pass this book because the subject of trans-gender doesn't appeal to you buy it and read it and you might find out what it is like on the other side.
I fully applaud Ms. Brevard!.......2004-01-31
I'm not even completely finished with this book, but feel compelled to post a `review.' I've been fascinated with transsexuals stories since I discovered Canary Conn's (born Danny O'Connor) autobiography when in college. I guess I've been searching for better understanding as to what would cause a person to make the ultimate, surgical, decision. Well, I can honestly say that after reading most of Aleshia Brevard's honest autobiography, I am not only fairly close to understanding, but have the utmost respect for those who have to correct a birth defect in their gender (to paraphrase Ms. Brevard). But, this book isn't merely a transsexual's story - it's a human story about feeling different, and how to correct that difference. I fully applaud Ms. Brevard, not only for her integrity and grit to make that ultimate corrective action, but also for this wonderfully human account that's now shared with the world (and, she's got a great sense of humor). Let's hope that more people, no matter what their gender, read and appreciate this book. To Ms. Brevard I say, BRAVA!
Absolutely Fabulous!.......2003-10-14
I can't remember the last time I've had such fun with a book. Reading Aleshia's story is like peeking into the diary of 1960's-70's sex kitten - which in fact you are!
Aleshia is a such a gifted story teller, I feel that I know all the people in this book. And judging by the celebrities she names, we all do.
This is one book I'm sure to read over again.
