Book Description
"Scanlon's War 1941-1945" is a different WW II story. It is hilarious and dramatic, at times graphic and not for the faint of heart. George R. Scanlon is a product of the depression, toughened by three years on a Pennsylvania oil pipe line crew, and tossed into a world wide conflict. He provides an intimate enlisted man's view of WW II military life and in particular the contributions of draftees from rural America's working class families.
His adventures stretch from a pre-Pearl Harbor draft notice to a Tech Sergeant's experiences as a P-38 mechanic with the 94th Fighter Sqadron in the North African and Italian Campaigns. He came ashore with Eisenhower and Patton in the Operation Torch invasion of North Africa carrying the company safe and trying not to drown. Scanlon tells it exactly like it was and you have no doubt he is telling the truth. He is a natural storyteller with an amazing memory for detail.
Travel with him as he tells of his pals, his enemies, his loves and his adventures away from home.

Looking Back.......2001-01-09
I recently heard of an old proverb (possibly Russian)--If you look back at all, you'll lose the sight of one eye, but if you don't look back at all, you'll go blind.
From whatever prospective it's viewed, war inevitably alters the viewer. And, my view of war--although remote, through the eyes of George Scanlon (Scanlon's War)--has been forever changed.
Mr. Scanlon forces us to look back at World War II and the reality experienced by the enlisted man. His message is blunt, honest, and amusing. Powerful and disturbing. I've always questioned the reasoning surrounding war, and this book raised many more questions.
Not my typical read; however, I highly recommend Scanlon's War to those not afraid to look back.
The Real WWII.......2000-11-20
Scanlon's War is an anecdotal account of one man's contribution to the war effort. He brings a gritty honesty, humor and poignancy to his personal story of serving in the armed forces during World War II. We do not learn of political manueverings, troop movements, battles fought and won. Instead, the author tells us of his loneliness as a new recruit, the frustrations and small joys of serving in this man's army. He takes us inside his tent and tells of the "creature comforts" they engineer to make life a bit nicer. He describes the difficult transition for fellow soldiers coming back to the fighting after a short pass home. He shares his memories of the people and cultures that he meets while serving in Northern Africa and Italy. After reading this book I conclude that I have led a sheltered life. I cannot conceive of living under these conditions and having to do what these men and women did during the war. Mr Scanlon's honesty is well served. I feel that I have met the man and have a better understanding of what an enlisted man's life was during WWII.
Not for the faint of heart.......2000-11-04
This is not a book for the faint of heart. It's earthy and real. It's a man honed by the Depression, drafted into service during the Big One, World War II. It's a man facing each situation as a challenge and fighting with every fiber of his being to overcome and survive. It's filled with humor, pathos, sickness, sex, and excess. It's filled with love, laughter, and despair. Scanlon's memoirs put the reader behind the lens, not of the camera, but of the eyes of a young soldier. The reader sees, hears, tastes, and smells the journey. A visual and visceral experience. World War II was a time period glamorized by Hollywood and now all but forgotten by the baby boomers and the X generation. Scanlon refuses to glamorize it and refuses to forget it. He knows the younger generations need to understand the horror of war on a personal, gut-wrenching level. The reader will not find a macho, cavalier attitude toward war in the vignettes remembered and reconstructed on these pages. They will find a tough man torn apart by his love for life and justice. A tough man with the regenerating, healing gift of Celtic humor and storytelling. ... His amazing memory for details, and ability to tella story more engagingly than any movie, helped our family appreciatenot only the riotous anecdotes of wartime, but also the insanity, indignity, and ignominy of war. Like life itself, "Scanlon'sWar" will pull you from laughter to tears from one page to the next.
It's all true.......2000-11-02
When I first started reading Scanlon's War I wasn't sure if Mr. Scanlon had a wee bit of the malarkey in him, after all I reasoned, how could all of this happen to one man? After meeting Mr. Scanlon recently I now believe that all of his exploits were indeed true. World War II veterans are a dying breed and there are not many more of them around to tell us the stories of those brave men that saved the world for us in the 1930's and 40's. I don't think many people of this generation could imagine having to live for years in the deplorable conditions that our service men were forced endure. Yet somehow most of them seemed to have survived. I think that a lot of the antics that Mr. Scanlon was involved in during the war was his way of coping with almost unbearable conditions. I thoroughly enjoyed his explanations of the ingenious ways that the GI's found to survive the harsh conditions in the various parts of the world in which they were assigned. My own grandfather who was a World War II veteran of the British army died just a few weeks ago. He would have loved to have read this book because as Mr. Scanlon told me, he pulled no punches and told things just as they were. I am sure that there are quite a few men in their 80's out there that could identify with this book and add some of their own stories to it. Mr. Scanlon sure is a character to this day, enjoying life to the fullest, just as he did during the dark days of the last World War. World War II history buffs would certainly enjoy this book for all it's honesty, but so would anyone else that just enjoys a true to life drama about a true to life man.
American History the Way it Should Be Told.......2000-11-01
George Scanlon is a master story teller!! This book combines the ignonimy of war with a sagacious and discerning perspective presented by one skillful WWII soldier. The austere and abject life that surrounded Mr. Scanlon is welcomely retold and puctuated with a levity that could only arise from actual encounters with real-life situations. As he weaves through his accountings, Mr. Scanlon leaves behind a Norman Rockwell-like portrayal of the human side of military life. Not too quick to neglect indignity and infamy, "Scanlon's War" is still fought behind the lines where shrewd but benevolent hearts conquer an unconscionable social situation. This book is imbued with uproarious anecdotes cleverly crafted to form a montage of war-life as seen through the eyes of one particularly perspicacious and talented author. Accolades to George Scanlon, who's task was to recount American history as it truly existed. And, indeed his poignant tale would arouse many a student from the mundane history text-books customarily proffered as gospel. FIVE STARS scarcely gives enough credit to this book !!!

This book is NOT politically correct! It is a true story of what it was like for a tough little Irish blue-collar worker who goes AWOL from the Army to join the Air Force in WWII. He is a hard working enlisted man who never backs down from a fight but hates authority and incompetent officers. He loves women from California to England and North Africa. He is a maverick through and through!

Customer Reviews:
A truly magnificent book!.......2002-10-12
Kubler-Ross shares the most personal details of her life. From her humble beginnings as the "town doctor" to her incredible work with dying patients and her dedication to helping children with AIDS.
A truly incredible account of this remarkable and unforgetable human being.
Book Description
Carlos CastaÒeda is an anthropologist who has dedicated thirty years of his life to studying the world of shamans who lived in Mexico in ancient times. He has written ten books on this subject, during and after his apprenticeship with don Juan Matus, a Yagui Indian shaman from Mexico.
This book is a collection of quotes derived from those books. The quotations, by themselves, show a strand of continuity, which was not dictated by the teacher, don Juan Matus, nor by the student, Carlos CastaÒeda. It seems to be an independent trend set in motion by the shamans of old Mexico themselves.
Accompanying the quotations, Carlos CastaÒeda has written his personal commentaries. Together, the quotations and commentaries create a counterpoint of ideas that will be of great interest to the reader.

Handy manual for project managers.......2007-03-09
When a major project falls into your lap, one thing is certain: When it's over, your reputation in your organization will be either a lot better or a lot worse, based on how the project turns out. Michael Thomsett covers all the bases you'll need to hit to manage a project successfully, one of the most daunting tasks managers face. He stuffs an impressive amount of information into 205 pages, although at times the text reads as if it is also the product of a flowchart diagram. Thomsett views project management as more science than art, insisting, for example, that project managers should not build a "fudge factor" or float into their budgets. This advice overlooks the unscientific impact that exceeding your budget can have on your career. We recommend reading this little black book before you start your next project.
Misleading Advice.......2004-01-21
This book offers a lot of advice to would be project managers; unfortunately, little of it appears to be born of experience. In fact, following this book to the letter would lead to one novice pitfall after another. The author recommends against adding float (he calls it 'fudge') to cost or time budgets. Experience yields contact with variance, and variance is a fact of life that cannot be denied in the planning phase. Toward the end of the book, advising how to build a career, the author suggests that projects should always be brought in on time and on budget. Without float, how in the world can things come in on time and on budget without a miracle? Although some of the information provided is useful, the mistakes in here are toxic enough to warrant avoiding the book. I would think a book entitled 'little black book' would provide some coverage of organizational politics. Perhaps this is a book that could be sent anonymously to one's enemies? My advice is to avoid the book, and to avoid getting your boss the book, despite the fact that other reviews describe it as an executive primer.
The Project Management Primer with the most ROI........2003-04-05
If there is only one book you want to read and you don't want to spend more than a few hours to get up to speed on project management, this is that book.
We were introduced to this book in graduate school at Georgia Tech while taking some Industrial Engineering classes that had a lot of team oriented projects. The Industrial Engineering graduate program at Georgia Tech has consistently ranked No. 1 in the nation for at least the last decade. So, when they recommended that we buy, read and keep this book for a long time to come, I didn't question their judgment.
I wasn't too thrilled with what the book had to say when I first read it a few years back. My first impressions were - why are they making such a big deal about these simple concepts? The theory in the book seemed too simplistic at the time. But over the last few years as I started gaining experience as a project manager, I discovered the reasons why this book is so popular.
The reason why this book is so valuable - most people when first introduced to project management are not interested in reading a lot of material on the subject and want to get a Cliff's notes version of the subject. That's when you can get the most benefit from this book. It is better to read this book than not read anything at all on the subject. And it is a very easy book to read.
Over the years, I have been able to convince several people to read this book and gain project management skills because it is not that much of a commitment to ask from people. I have even led weekly project management learning sessions using this book as the main tool. It worked and people learned quite a bit more about project management than they knew before reading the book.
After years of project management experience and passing the PMP, I now realize what a gem this book is even for an experienced project manager. It can act as a refresher if you read it once a year. Sometimes, we all tend to forget the simplest and most obvious things and this book helps us remember the basic project management principles.
Don't be fooled by this 170 page lightweight, it packs quite a powerful punch! A lot of professionals who are not project managers have thanked me for recommending this book. It helped them understand what I do as a project manager without having to spend too much time. It may be an excellent idea to distribute copies of this very inexpensive book to members of your team so that it can enhance team communications.
If project management is your career, you should definitely move on to other books after finishing this book. You can keep the copy as an annual refresher though.
This is Crap.......2001-08-02
First of all, the book is over 10 years old at this point. Second of all, it's based on industrial project management concepts from the 70's. Third, it accomplishes very little besides completely boring the reader for 170 pages. It dispenses useless advice such as "make a budget," "make a schedule," written in a stilted format apparently designed to numb the reader's brain. You will not refer back to this book as a reference at any point after reading, I promise you.
If this book has sold well, I imagine it's because of the clever title and black cover. It's certainly not because of the contents. Try "Project Management for Dummies" instead--it's got a silly title, but has much more useful information inside. Or at least buy something sold more recently than this paperweight.
Good Resource to Start Project Management Quickly.......2000-06-21
I was looking for a book that would get me going fairly quickly. I had a project with a tight budget that was going to take the better part of a year. I needed to start managing it, and I needed to start then. Those 600+ page college-text style tomes were not going to help. Then I found this little gem, and I was off and running.
Thomsett starts at the beginning--organizing-- then in 11 chapters and 182 pages describes planning, team-building, budgeting, scheduling, communication, documentation, review, and even tips for eliminating common problems. The most important (and common) tools such as PERT and Gantt charts, flow diagrams, etc. are all here. There are even exercises after each chapter (with answers in the appendix) so you can test yourself and make sure you've got it.
This book helped me get it, and gave me the tools I needed to be able to manage my project successfully. If you're an accomplished project manager, this book will seem basic (although it may be a good review). If you're starting down this path or want to share the basics with your team members, you'll find it to be quite helpful.
