Book Description

In 1944 a vacant army base in upstate New York became the temporary home of over 900 men, women and children who had fled Europe towards the end of World War II. With little more than the clothing on their backs, Rebekkah and her mother are just two of the many refugees who come to live in the camp. Adjusting to a strange new world and a new language, Rebekkah puts aside her own fears to try and recreate tiny bits of home for her mother. A fictional story based on the real-life experiences of surviving refugees, Rebekkahs Journey shares the illuminating story of one refugees arrival on Americas shores.

The illustrations and text treat this sad but uplifitng story with great tact and artistry. I recommend this book for children who need to learn about the realitiy of the Holocaust, but also need to know that good people can help to prevent atrocities. This book, and all of Ann Burg's books, are on my 'to buy' list!

              Book Description

The increasing popularity of the Internet has resulted in the majority of today's programming tasks and applications involving some form of networking. Almost every programming language provides some networking facilities. However, unlike other programming languages, Java had support for network programming built into it right from the start. Java, therefore, allows you to develop powerful network applications with exceptional ease. This book introduces you to the world of Java network programming and takes you far inside it.

The chapters of this book are grouped in five sections. The first section looks at network basics. Java networking preliminaries are then covered in the following section. The third section explores classes that are provided by Java to handle a variety of network tasks. Java API's that are used for distributed network programming are covered in section four. The fifth and final section investigates new networking features and improvements offered by JDK 1.4.

              This book covers:

            • Networking in JDK 1.3 and 1.4
            • Network Basics
            • Java I/O, Threads
            • Java security model, JCA, JAAS, JCE and JSSE
            • TCP, UDP, Multicasting
            • Java URL handler architecture
            • Serialization, RMI, CORBA
            • Servlets, JavaMail, JMS

              1 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!.......2003-03-04

Do not buy this book, and for your own good, don't even read it!

First of all, I am an experienced computer programmer, and have developed code for the Java core programming language. I have read many-a-programming book, and can tell you to stay away from this one. Why?

              This book:

              * is not practical
              * is filled with *serious* errors - not just typos
              * fails by attempting to cover too many topics
              * lacks examples and good diagrams
              * lacks a sense of continuity from chapter to chapter

Many of this book's chapters are written as if they were a theorem: generalizations and buzzwords that don't get you anywhere. For example:

"If a set of permissions can between them imply a permission - even if no single permission in the set explicitly implies it completely by itself - you will need to provide your own implementation of PermissionCollection." Ha!

"Because sockets are just *programming* abstractions for network protocols, the other side of the connection does not have to use them. For example, the network program on the right side of this example may be coded in an exotic system that does not use the socket abstraction. That is, sockets don't use any additional communications mechanism other than that provided by the encapsulated protocol." Gimme a break!

Some of the errors in this book are the following:

              * Chapter 5's author says that java.io.InputStream's "public int read(byte[] buf, int offset, int length)" method reads the input stream starting at 'offset' bytes deep into the input buffer - skipping the bytes toward the front of the buffer. This is incorrect. The author even has a diagram and examples to complement his error. This method actually reads starting at the front of the input buffer, and reads the bytes into 'buf' starting at buf[offset].

              * As if all of the previous chapters' authors' errors weren't bad enough, Chapter 9's author took me to a screeching halt and compelled me to write this whole review when he said this: " It should be noted that the java.net.Socket object returned is bound to an ephemeral port number that is different from the one the ServerSocket is listening to (most applications don't care about that port number)." Whoa! This is absolutely, fundamentally wrong. In truth, the returned Socket has the *same* receiving port number as the ServerSocket. (Otherwise the client's Socket (whose destination port number is the same as the ServerSocket's receiving port number) wouldn't know what this "ephemeral port number" is, and so wouldn't be able to send packets to the server's newly created Socket.) IP packets are demultiplexed according to their *connection* (The 2 connected sockets, i.e. 5 parameters: the common protocol, the source's IP address & port number, and the destination's IP address & port number) and according to socket specificity, not just according to the receiving side's socket.

              * Wrong diagrams. p.163: The diagram is of a program's output which shows "access denied", while its caption above says, basically, "tada, and it works." p.52: This diagram belongs in the I/O chapter.

The only chapter I found to be somewhat good was the Thread chapter (and a chapter on threads shouldn't even be in a book on networking). This book also suffers from lacking continuity due to the fact that it was written by 10 authors! For instance, this book has no consistent (or good) way of listing the API's and diagraming class relations. Chapters do not pedagogically build on the previous ones. I could go on...

If you want to learn about networking using Java, then here are your prerequisites. You should learn each of these from a book which specializes in the given topic.

              * Basic Java Programming including I/O and Threads
              * The TCP/IP protocol suite and TCP/IP networking
              * Cryptography (optional)
              * Java Security

After you do that, I highly recommend the book "TCP/IP Sockets In Java: Practical Guide for Programmers". This book gets the job done at only 110 pages. Another reason I recommend this book is that it lists references to 22 other good and relevant books/documents.

If you want to learn about HTML, Javascript, Servlets, JSP, RMI, CORBA, etc., then you should find a book specific to that topic. For instance, Marty Hall's books on Servlets and JSP are great.

Just because a programming book is thick, doesn't mean it's good. The book's publisher, Wrox, does put out some good books, but this just isn't one of them.

2 out of 5 stars Unorganized and bloated.......2002-06-27

I bought this book in hopes that it would help guide me on the path to learn Java programming. Numbering over 1000 pages by several different authors, this book does not have a very consistent feel to it, and jumps around to various subjects about Java and various networking principles. The first 200 pages would be good for a university networking class, but as for being a decent tutorial, it is horrible. This book gives little code snippets here and there, but never fully combines them into one large, solid, and useful application.

If you are looking for a book to act as a Java tutorial to networking, this is not the book for you. It is very comprehensive in some areas, and much more than many people are willing to spend in getting through sections of this book. However, if you are looking for a little more general purpose Java networking Bible, then this book might be more suited for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great source of information.......2001-10-25

I was looking to do more than what you normally find documented in Java and this gave me the details I needed. It has a lot of network protocol details right in the book so you don't have to keep switching between a protocol book and a Java book. Although it's titled, "Beginning Java Networking" it would also benefit an advanced Java programmer interested in writing networking programs.

                Book Description

One of the great rebels of psychiatry, R. D. Laing challenged prevailing models of madness and the nature and limits of psychiatric authority. In this brief and lucid book, Laing's widely praised biographer distills the essence of Laing's vision, which was religious and philosophical as well as psychological.

The Crucible of Experience reveals Laing's philosophical debts to existentialism and phenomenology in his theories of madness and sanity, family theory and family therapy. Daniel Burston offers the first detailed account of Laing's practice as a therapist and of his relationships--often contentious--with his friends and sometime disciples. Burston carefully differentiates between Laing and "Laingians," who were often clearer, more confident, and more simplistic than their teacher.

While he examines Laing's theories of madness, Burston focuses most provocatively on Laing's views of sanity and normality and on his recognition, toward the end of his life, of the essential place of holiness in human experience. In a powerful last chapter, Burston shows that Laing foresaw the present commercialization of medicine and asked pointed questions about what the meaning of sanity and the future of psychotherapy in such a world could be. In this, as in other matters, Laing's questions of a generation ago remain questions for our time.

4 out of 5 stars Worth reading, but uneven.......2000-05-12

Daniel Burston, a professor in the existential-phenomenological psychology program at Duquesne University and a respected Laing scholar, has put together a very well-written, interesting, but uneven work on the manifold ways in which Laing's thought can be connected with psychotherapy. After reading his excellent, rigorously intellectual biography of Laing, _The Wing of Madness_, I had expected to find in the _Crucible of Experience_ an equivalent depth of scholarly knowledge and clarity. And some sections of the book do possess this. The chapter on normality and the numinous, for instance, offers a very patient and careful teasing-apart of the many meanings of "normality" and how Laing treated these different meanings in his understandings of mental disorder. Other sections, however, are not as impressive. The chapter on Laing's roots in existentialism and phenomenology, for example, is far too reliant on secondary sources, and its summaries of the views of the various existential and phenomenological philosophers often feel curt and staccato. One more serious problem I have with this work is that it mostly ignores Laing's conceptualization of what he termed "knots:"- contradictory, paradoxical, and entangling patterns of relatedness that create vicious circles. (see Laing's own book _Knots_) From my perspective, the notion of "knots" is probably the most relevant element of Laing's thought for psychotherapy, as the concept can richly describe and account for repetitive trauma, compulsions, "inner" conflict, and all sorts of other contradictory and circular patterns of interpersonal experience that therapists often run into. Therefore, to me, the omission of this concept is rather glaring. Overall, however, Burston's book is a well-written, enjoyable, and thoughtful journey through the labyrinths of Laing's thinking.

                Book Description

At least one in four girls and one in seven boys endure some form of sexual abuse. And most of these sexual trauma survivors find the early adult years are crucial for recovery. During this time they have the best combination of motivation, capacity for insight, and support to begin the process of healing. Written by a psychologist who works with sexually abused teens, It Happened to Me helps young adults reflect on what happened, examine its impact on their lives, and begin to develop healthy relationships.

4 out of 5 stars Great workbook to open discussion.......2007-01-16

This is a wonderful tool to use when working with teens who are ready to deal with their experience of sexual abuse (abuse of other kinds also). Not only is this useful for clinicians, it can be modified and used by other providers, too. It seems that it is important for the client to be ready to do the work, however...

I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THE PROMPTNESS OF HOW MY ORDER WAS TAKEN CARE OF, PROSSESSED QUICKLY, AND DELIVERED TO ME WITHIN A FEW DAYS OF THE ORDER. THANK YOU

                5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2002-07-06

This workbook is a MUST. It is a workbook related to abuse and can help anyone who has been through trauma and going through the healing process. I have done some of the exercises by myself and some in a small group. I strongly recommend this workbook. I have a hard time putting the book down between exercises, because I truely feel that this book is helping me cope.

5 out of 5 stars "It Happened" helped me.......2002-06-11

I am a teenager and read this book because a friend recommended it to me. She had read about it in Seventeen magazine and knew that it related to some things I've been through. The exercises made me think about the past in a good way - a way that helped me see that I can be a good person no matter what I've been through. The psychologist who wrote this book knows teenagers. I felt like he knew me and knew just what I needed to work through my issues. Also, I loved the quotes from teenagers that were scattered through the book. If you need help working through sexual abuse, It Happened To Me can help you too.

5 out of 5 stars All teen and young adult survivors need this workbook.......2002-06-05

This workbook is just excellent! I have trouble putting it down! It manages to be relevant to a wide variety of teens, without being too technical, too cutesy, or too preachy. Each exercise is short (2-3 pages) but challenging. There are also quotes from teen survivors and sidebars that point out problem behaviors common in abuse survivors without being judgmental. As a college student, I'm a little too old to be the intended audience of this book (all the teens mentioned in here are between the ages of 13-18), but as someone who still has to deal with her parents on a regular basis, I appreciated that lots of the exercises here dealt with family matters under the assumption that you're still living and dealing with your family, something that's not in many of the adult books. Guys might not like that pretty much all the pronouns are "she" and "her", but otherwise it's still a very relevant book for every teen survivor. It can be completed by yourself, in a group, or as part of therapy. Topics covered include emotions and emotional manipulation, keeping secrets, impulsive behaviors, how to get along with other people, sex, suicide, and commitment to recovery. The emphasis is not on "name your disorder" but on returning to emotional health. Even if you have to make a secret trip to the bookstore and hide this book in the back of your closet, it's worth it.

                5 out of 5 stars I loved this cookbook.......2006-03-07

I must cordially disagree with the previous 2 reviewers who thought the recipes too rich. I made polenta with leeks and loved it! Good recipes for quinoa. A lot to choose from and not all of them had cream in the ingredients.
I did my usual drill of borrowing from library, trying a few recipes and then deciding whether to buy. I bought!

3 out of 5 stars Tasty food if you are trying to kill yourself.......2004-05-21

I would guess anyone looking for a cookbook on grains would be thinking of healthy recipes that are also tasty. Well, you have come to the wrong cookbook. Make no mistake about it, the recipes are pretty delicious, but if I made a regular habit out of serving these butter & cream laden artery-cloggers at dinner, I would be slowly eating myself to death. To echo the earlier reviewer, look elsewhere for healthy recipes.

The 3 stars represent a combined rating. Because the recipes are tasty & pretty easy to prepare, I give the book 5 stars. Because of the utter lack of healthy recipes, despite the title leading you to believe otherwise, I give it 1 star.

Forewarned is forearmed. Enjoy these recipes, but don't overdo it.

3 out of 5 stars Tasty and creative, but not very healthy........1999-05-20

This book has a wealth of creative recipes for grains, and the ones I tried were delicious. The "Four Seasons Olympic Bran Muffins" are so good, you could easily forget they're bran muffins, but like many recipes in the book, they have a very high sugar content. Low fat is definitely not a priority in this book either. In many of the recipes, the whole grain is a very minor ingredient. The book provides excellent general information about each grain and is useful for creative inspiration, but if you want healthy recipes, look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cookbooks for flavorful cuisine!.......2000-12-30

I love Bert's cookbooks! They contain some of the most interesting and savory recipes I've encountered. From "Tagine Aid El Kebir" (Moroccan Lamb Stew), in the Couscous section, to "Georgian Yogurt and Barley Soup" to "Triple-Threat Onion Pilaf" with Bulgur, I always know where to go for a tasty meal.

As an added bonus, Bert includes personal stories and anecdotes that are sure to peak your interest or have you rolling on the floor (be sure to read the introduction to the chapter on bulgur where Bert describes his first sampling in a bordello in Paris).

Many of the recipes are quite healthy, such as "Sally's Crazy Health Bread" and "Healthy Farmer's Wife's Pot-Roasted Chicken" (with wheat berries). Many others are just plain good! The health-conscious may want to consider substituting healthier ingredients for some of the ones listed in the cookbook. I use Jane Brody's excellent "Good Food Gourmet" for ideas about healthy eating and ingredient substitution. Then again, many of the recipes in "The Grains Cookbook" are Mediterranean in origin. I've read many articles delineating how this is the healthiest cuisine of all. It is the typical American fare that is unhealthy, full of processed foods and saturated fats that are the real killers. Personally, I like Bert's recipes just the way they are.

This book may be out of print. It is certainly worth tracking down and purchasing.

For those who like this book, I would also recommend "Flatbreads and Flavors" by Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Dugid. This cookbook takes one on culinary odyssey from central Asia, through Europe to North America in quest of flatbreads and the flavorful dishes that accompany them.
