Midnigt diary.......2005-11-22
Midnight Diary is the perfect book for fortune telling it will tell you everything that you want to know I loved this book it told me " beware you are about to be betrade and shortly after that I found out that my boyfriend was cheating on me with my best friend
Not your typical diary.......2002-09-03
This little book/diary was very interesting. And I might add original. Even the cover is in itself eyecatching.
At the start of the book, it has it's special parts to fill out stuff about you, your family, etc.
Then it starts off. It goes on a month by month basis, starting with January and ending with December. For each month it starts out with a bit from a popular Fear Street book, and that would be the focus for each month. Each included things like quizzes about youself, quizzes about Fear Street characters, fun activities, and much more, and of course places to write your thoughts, feelings, secrets, etc.
For example, on one part, you write down secrets about you and others, then there's instructions where to fold the page up halfway and then tape it so that "no one will find them".
This book is a definite recommend for anyone into the Fear Street books or who just likes something a little on the scary side. Like I said, interesting and original to the fullest.
So cool.......2000-04-21
This book was so cool. I defenitly recommend it espically if your into fortune telling and of course Fear street.

Book Description
The first democratically elected leader of Russia--and the first ever to resign voluntarily--reviews his tumultuous years in office and the changes and challenges in his country.
Midnight Diaries is Boris Yeltsin's pithy, personal, and revealing account of the struggles and upheavals in Russia over the last several years, seen from the perspective of the man whose job it was to pull all the strings together. Growing out of a series of late-night conversations between Mr. Yeltsin and his chief of staff, the book addresses with astounding candor subjects including: the real impact of the coup of 1991; the process of decision-making about Chechnya; Yeltsin's relationships with world leaders including Bill Clinton, Helmut Kohl, Jacques Chirac, Zhao Zemin, and Tony Blair; the real story behind the string of prime ministers he hired and then dismissed; the Russian economy and allegations of corruption; his own health; and his decision to retire from the presidency.
Vivid and direct in the style of Yeltsin himself, Midnight Diaries is an unprecedented look inside the tumultuous politics of a changing Russia. Its publication is an international publishing event.

cultural insights.......2002-03-28
Although this book is quite limited in it's perspective, it does offer both candid and posed tips on modern Russian culture. Mr. Yeltsin's copious jottings reveal his personal taste for style and political power. The writings also reveal some of the cultural challenges that plague the Russian people such as; peer presure among adults for consumption of vodka and the need for modern business people to find a moral code that will promote sound national and international business practices. The extensive political reporting which Mr. Yeltsin has voiced would indicate that Russian self-government is still in the developing stages and has many hurtles to pass. However the outlook is hopeful and not blindly so. One leaves the text wondering how we might come to learn more of President Putin's own style of politics. An interesting read for anyone studying modern Russian culture, this book is by no means an authoratative overview on the culture.
Interesting, but visibly one-sided.......2000-11-16
Yeltsin's memoirs are without doubt interesting and necessary source for everybody who's looking to understand what really has happened in Russia during 90s. But unfortunately this is only half or even less of that what Yeltsin really could tell us. First of all, this is not of course Yeltsin who has written this book. Real authors are Valentin Yumashev, who is also author of Yeltsin's previous memoirs, and Tatyana Dyatchenko, Yeltsin's daugther. Reading this book you could find almost in every chapter how authors had tried to save Yeltsin's face for history. They succeeded if reader is not well informed about Russia. But for them who have lived this through, Yeltsin's book is too one-sided and not really trustful piece.
Clear and logical explanations to Russian politics.......2000-11-13
No wonder that this book attracted such negative reaction from 'experts' in Russian politics. What seemed almost to everyone as illogical, bizarre behavior of a senile tsar suddenly becomes clear, simple and logical. Yeltsin describes day by day his struggle for power since he started his presidential race with support of only 3% of popular support. As one reads the book it becomes evident that Yeltsin always had a very clear and realistic picture of what was happening around him. He could let people believe that he was too sick and weak to rule, watched who, how and when tried to get the power. Like a good hunter Yeltsin stoke deadly blows on his foes when they truely believed he was under their control. Yeltsin analyzes the situation, decides who's his friend or foe, plans his actions and acts without remorse. The book reads like a novel that unfolds the secrets of Russian under carpet bulldogs fighting.
Wow.......2000-11-11
This is such a great memoir of a very interesting man. I always felt that Yelstin never got his commupance. He led a country the best he could in a very hard time
And now we get to hear everything that happend from the "front-lines" in the leaders own words.

A sensitive, emotional, and unforgettable tale.......2005-06-25
Zoya's mom is going away, but she leaves with the soul-felt promise to return in seven days time. Yet 12-year-old Zoya feels terribly uneasy that she will never see her mom again. Her fears stem from being abandoned at the age of four in a Russian orphanage. But ever since Zoya's adoption, her new mom has filled Zoya's life with an unconditional love and a colorful laughter that have far overshadowed the nightmares from her sad beginnings. Until now.
Zoya's mom asks an old friend by the name of Leon to stay with Zoya while she's away. This doesn't help Zoya's uneasiness any. She doesn't know him, and she doesn't want him trying to take her mother's place. But he moves right in, sleeping in her mother's bed, attempting to make breakfast and walking her to school whether Zoya likes it or not. Zoya just wants her mom back.
Before she leaves, Zoya's mom gives her a diary to help ease their time apart. The diary also may help Zoya recall her past in order to start healing from her fears of abandonment. She doesn't remember a lot from before the adoption, just flashes mostly. And she recalls a plaid suitcase, the same plaid suitcase that is stored on the top shelf of the closet, and could possibly contain information about her past. But is Zoya ready to remember?
The seven days until the promised return pass painfully slowly, and Zoya fills the darkest, loneliest hours of the night by filling the pages of her diary with her darkest, loneliest fears. Zoya plows through the rest of the time by stumbling upon little adventures, like discovering who's been crying down in the apartment building's basement, and learning to assist the not-so-terrible-after-all Leon with his magic act.
This sensitive tale gently pulls the reader through its pages, tugging on every emotion the entire way. Laura Shaine Cunningham does a superb job conveying Zoya's pains and fears to where readers will feel each crack in Zoya's heart and every tear slip down her cheek. This excellent book will be enjoyed by people of all ages!

Book Description
Gold leaf blocking on leather and parchment had been practiced in Europe since the early 16th century. From 1698 onwards this technique was applied to paper. What became known as brocaded paper was produced in a relief printing process — a design cut in relief using a number of different metalworking tools from a sheet of copper or brass at least 6mm thick. The repertoire of shapes used to decorate brocaded paper, among them ribbons, tendrils, arabesques and floral blossoms, closely echo the patterns adorning the leather wall coverings and silk damask of the time. Towards the end of the 18th and in the 19th century the predominant motifs were leaves with figurative patterns, laid out like a picture sheet. This journal's cover portrays a beautiful example of this sumptuous variety of coloured paper housed in Augsburg, Nuremberg and Fürth in Germany.
Book Description
Inspired by the pottery of the North American Pueblo tribes we offer this hauntingly beautiful Southwestern design. Their ancient craft tradition teaches that the making of handmade clay pottery is a direct expression of the belief that the Pueblo are, as individuals and as a people, one with the earth. This Pueblo Pottery journal features details from contemporary Acoma and San Ildefonso designs, adapted from patterns developed long before the Europeans reached North America. Acoma pottery is renowned for its thin, white walls, emblazoned with repeated geometric patterns that fit the exact shape of each vessel to create intricate optical illusions. San Ildefonso pottery is treasured for its exquisitely detailed matte-on-black polish designs. This smythe sewn book features a luminous tactile cover, magnetic flap, memento pouch, ribbon page marker and lined cream paper of archival quality.

The Best Journal I've Ever Had!.......2005-05-13
I found this type of journal in a bookstore a year ago and absolutely loved it. So much that I searched and found it here on Amazon. The journal has a pocket in the back for loose paper, a hard cover with a folding flap, and an attached string to mark your page Each of the Pueblo Pottery series tells the story of the artist and of Pueblo people. I just love pulling this journal out in a crowd, as it's very unique and cool looking, which makes inspiration for writing that much easier.
I'll be buying another one for sure.

edgeworth family.......2004-01-19
Doug has done a wonderful service to those of us who love not only genealogy, but also try to get to know the people we chronicle. The Edgeworth family has long been known as a letter writing people with letters going back to the 1700s. Doug's family has continued this tradition and he has shared with us, in the compiling of these letters, the hardships and the joy of life in "the Sandhills". Life has always been hard in this area, but this is the story of the common man overcoming difficult situations in a difficult time of history. We often remember the or are taught of people that make history, but these people make up the backbone of communities all across America that have really made our country great.
Great family reading.......2002-06-13
The author did a great job of conveying Southern living. Though much younger, it gave me a realistic view of the life my grandparents would have lived and a great appreciation for their hardships and eternal love of the land.
Gryphons of the Sandhills - The Edgeworth Letters.......2002-05-07
I found the book to be something I could relate to as I also grew up in a farming family and lived to receive letters from my older brother who had gone off to serve in the Korean War. We lived for his letters and he lived for ours as well.
The letters kept the simplicity of the spelling of those days and schooling and made it more realistic. I think it was most interesting and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the history of the south.
Book Description
In the Spring of 1809, the Austrian army, buoyant and full of new-found patriotic fervour, rolled across the frontier with Bavaria. The time had come to exact revenge for the humiliating defeat suffered at Austerlitz. But ten days later, harassed by ceaseless rain, they were streaming back from the Abens river with Napoleon in hot pursuit. Napoleon had not been in the front line when Austria had launched its campaign - and the French and their German allies had blundered backwards and forwards across the Bavarian countryside. But, with the appearance of Napoleon, Archduke Charles lost the initiative. Based for the first time upon the Austrian primary sources, this title takes the reader through the various clashes of this significant campaign.

1809 - Part 2.......2002-08-06
This is best seen as a companion to the earlier volume on Aspern-Essling and Wagram. It is unfortunate that the earlier book has perhaps to large a subject while this one is possibly the ideal size for this format. It is a very accessible account of an engagement usually obscured by or glossed over in favour the larger battles that followed. As always very nicely illustrated, and presented.
The Emperor of Battles.......2000-06-21
Ian Castle has written an excellent history of the first half of the Campaign of 1809. Using both Austrian and French sources, he has produced a totally reliable, well-written account of the Austrian invasion of Bavaria that almost caught the French by surprise. The account is balanced, authoritative, and logically presented. Errors and omissions are few, the most glaring being the often repeated mistake of naming Napoleon's Chief of Staff, Marshal Berthier, as the commander of the French Army of Germany before Napoleon's arrival from Paris, which he was definitely not. Other than that, however, the author has presented one of the best modern narratives of this campaign that can be used as a reliable reference by historians, enthusiasts, and wargamers. The artwork by Christa Hook is excellent, lively, and presents an accurate picture of the uniforms, deployments, and actions of the campaign. The other illustrations in this volume are superb and greatly enhance the excellent narrative. This book is highly recommended and is one of the best of the campaign series yet produced by Osprey.

Book Description
Carl Sandburg adapted his acclaimed four-volume biography into a one-volume account of the civil war. Our nation had its unity hammered out in storm. Sandburg's story of those years takes in campaigns and generals, common soldiers in their daily struggles, politics behind battle lines and the unbreakable faith in high and low places. It is a tragic and inspiring narrative, told by one of the great figures of American literature.
Customer Reviews:
Great military history book.......2003-09-22
Very well writen book. A very interesting and enjoyable reading. No pictures, though. But the text is complemented by some draws of the battle scenes and a lot of maps showing troop movements and armies strategies. Slightly biased towards the Union side. Not in the sense of endorsing Union ideas as opposed to the confederates, but rather in the sense of spending a much larger number of pages describing the political and military background of the north, with fewer attention to the south.
Recommendable reading.
War and politics combined.......2002-12-14
What a wonderful book. All the poetic writing of Sandburg in a very informative study of the Lincoln Administration during the Civil War. You will find less details on specific battles but many more details on the politics and behind the scenes characters. You won't want to put this one down. Get to know Lincoln, his Cabinet and his Generals.

6 Stars: A MUST for anyone seeking to understand Property Rights.......2006-06-06
This book cannot be praised too highly. Wayne Hage, gone to glory today, understood property rights as do few others. The book is the main course for those seeking the answers to all the questions about split estate, adjudicated rights, water rights, and so much more. It is a book that should become worn with use, for it is an indispensable reference and resource. It's not only a keeper, it's also the perfect gift for others that need to know more about property rights and fighting successfully for them. Again, it would get a 6-star rating if that were an option! No, I won't loan my copy!

Taken mainly from Abraham Lincoln: The War Years. 60 halftones from photographs; 98 drawings, maps, and sketches.
Book Description
Now available in a handsomely produced oversized paperback—with expanded information and 24 pages of black-and-white photographs—The Biographical Encyclopedia of the Negro Baseball Leagues documents more than four thousand players on Negro League teams from 1872 through 1950. Called "one of the best reference books of the year" by Library Journal and named an outstanding academic book of the year by the American Library Association, this is the first book to cover comprehensively the careers of all African Americans who played with a team of major-league quality or whose careers are featured in the history of America’s Pastime. It delivers a wealth of information, from vital statistics and the standard baseball figures of batting averages and pitching records to career data, including years of active play, positions played, team affiliations, and even nicknames. To create this one-of-a-kind reference, baseball authority James A. Riley traveled the country to interview the surviving members of the Negro Leagues about their exploits and the careers of their now-deceased teammates. With this invaluable firsthand information, Riley brings to life the careers of such greats as Satchel Paige, Ray Dandridge, Josh Gibson, and Leon Day. Looking past Jackie Robinson’s breaking of the color barrier in 1947, he profiles all Major League Hall of Fame players who also played in the Negro Leagues such as Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Ernie Banks, and Roy Campanella. “A landmark publication in the fields of baseball history and African-American history … a one-of-a-kind work.”—Booklist
Customer Reviews:
An Essential Addition To The Bibliography Of The Negro Leagues.......2007-01-09
Exactly What It's title advertises - an alphabetical listings of players and personalities associated with the Negro Leagues of Baseball. Ranks with "Only the Ball Was White" and The works of John B.Holway as essntial to a study of the subject. Definitely recommended.
Celebrate The Legacy.......2006-12-19
Editor James A. Riley is a renowned expert on the rich history of Negro League Baseball. His crowning achievement is honoring more than 4,000 players and those involved in management between the years of 1872-1950 in this comprehensive biographical encyclopedia.
Included are biographies and statistics on each individual and team, a bibliography that lists the materials used in the research, along with a register of the interviews that Riley conducted.
The Negro Leagues had a major economic and social impact in the black community, featured some of the greatest players & teams that the sport has ever had and was an integrated business on the diamond, inside the front offices and in the stands.
I have always compared the play in the Negro Leagues v. the white MLB to that of the AFL v. NFL and ABA v. NBA; that it was on par or superior to the other major league. The encyclopedia is a celebration of the legacy left by those who not only challenged the institutionalized racial hatred of the times, but triumphed in ways that we can learn from and must never forget.
If You Love Baseball..........2001-08-08
...I question that love if you do not have this book. This is the most concise collection of biographies, stats, and information about every human involved with the development, management, and participation in every Negro League that ever existed. Even players whose first name was not known is listed with at least a few words about when they played and for whom. And the players with extensive history is detailed along with stats and other great side stories about them. There is even information on the teams in the Negro Leagues, which I found most interesting. I don't know of any other book that has as much information on the lesser-known players and behind-the-scenes people in the Negro Leagues than this one. If you are a Negro League fan, you probably already have this book. But if you are a baseball fan in general, you MUST have this book.

Picking Corporate Cotton.......2006-03-01
Jill Nelson is the modern day Harriet Tubman, leading the mentally enslaved from the chains of industrial oppression to the freedom of self-determined realization. If you read this missive and don't ask yourself if you've ever compromised your integrity to further someone else's capitalist agenda, you've missed the point of this brilliant body of work. Angst, inner turmoil, and introspection abound on the pages and tell the tale of a woman trapped in the web of office politics and backstabbing that eat at your joy, that erode your sense of self-worth. What is the price of voluntarily whitewashing your identity to please people with an agenda that does not validate or acknowledge the talents you bring to the table as a person of color? It's so much more than the reflections of a sista who got a position with the Washington Post who got a case of buyer's remorse and didn't like her job. This is the impetus to assess what it is that is important in life and to run towards freedom.
You would have to walk in her shoes to understand.......2003-02-04
It is ironic yet predictable that most of the people who don't "get" this book, tend to be individuals who are either not female, African American or both. Jill Nelson wrote an honest critique of the experience that many African American women go through when trying to attain the proverbial golden rings in corporate America. I am sorry some folks could not relate or understand Ms. Nelson's book because the points she brings up are true and still reflective of the socialogical culture most African Americans live in today--approximately twenty years later. The patriarchal blindness that many in this culture experience that prevents them from understanding or relating to another individual or cultures experiences is sad yet expected The best that Ms. Nelson and other writers like her can do is just tell the story and let those who get "it" get it.
Were some of her experiences hard to hear? Most definitely. Were the experiences unique to her? Absolutely not. Ms. Nelson says on in chapter 2, that she has been doing the standard Negro balancing act which is "blurring the edges of [her] being so that they [white people] don't feel intimidated." There are few African Americans, I would venture to guess, who haven't experienced this feeling at one time or another, yet it is virtually impossible to communicate this experience in a way that is understandable to someone who hasn't had to always be "aware" of how they are perceived and how those perceptions can affect other African Americans as well. Ms. Nelson does an excellent job explaining these details and if some people are still clueless, well, it's through no fault of her skill as a writer.
Keep on shedding a spotlight on these issues Ms. Nelson. There are a few out there who are truly looking for the light.
Nearly 10 years later and Nelson's words still ring true...........2002-07-31
Volunteer Slavery is STILL the book! Family, friends and coworkers are probably sick and tired of hearing me raving about the revealing, blistering and gossipy tell-all memoir! It's been nearly 10 years since the book was published, but I still regularly reread certain passages when I need inspiration, a good laugh, or a clearer understanding of the journalistic imbroglio with which I frequently have to deal with--after more than 15 years in the business!! Celebrate the anniversary of the BEST book EVER written about what it's REALLY like being a black journalist on the plantation...the newsroom at a daily newspaper!!
An insightful book........2000-03-27
As an African-American journalist, I found Jill Nelson's book to be very real. Those who criticize the book because Nelson strikes them as naive are missing the point, on at least two levels.
In the first place, though she naturally gets into certain generalities, the book is primarily about HER experience. It's not intended to be a handbook for reporters who are climbing the corporate ladder. Given her past, and her particular personality, this is the story of how she happened to react to a specific set of circumstances. How one judges her actions should be different from the way someone judges the book itself.
And secondly, to the extent that the book does have a larger intent, it calls for the dismantling of an outrageously unfair system. Should we all just accept the status quo, and find clever ways to navigate our way past pettiness and stupidity, or strive for a sane alternative?
The fact is that Nelson has done just fine since she left the Post. Viewed in that context, the book is a testament to her courage, and her insistence on personal dignity.
A rare combination of self-pity that still makes you laugh.......1999-12-16
The only other author I ever read who so effectively combined self-pity and wry humor was Erica Jong. Jill Nelson turns a wicked phrase and makes her characters and her situations jump to life. I laughed aloud at her description of her teenage daughter telling her "Mom, get a life!" in response to her lecturing about black conciousness. All through the book I kept wondering where Ms. Nelson's gripes came from. Because her dad left her mom for a white woman, as recounted in the book? She grew up in plush surroundings, with summers on Martha's Vineyard. As the number of unread pages shrank, I kept wondering if Ku Kluxers in white sheets were going to suddenly show up in the book to explain her bitter feelings about white males. Ms. Nelson said that white men are priveleged, but believe me, we too can be put through the grinder. I'm also a former newspaper reporter, born the same year as Ms. Nelson. When she complained about her reporting duries at the Washington Post, saying "I was too old to chase fire engines," I had to laugh. That's exactly what I was doing at another paper at the time she said that. I don't buy what Jill Nelson says, but I did enjoy the way she tells it.

This book covers a number of African-Americans from early American history to the first two thirds of the twentieth century. The bios are usually about a page long. No Pictures.
This book has been deemed to be a core collection book for the Miami-Dade Public Library System, because it has a lot of people that aren't found elesewhere and because it is sited so frequently. Anyone interested in this area who can afford this book will not feel they wasted their money in purchasing it.
