Book Description
Let Every Nation Know is the first book of its kind-a historical biography in Kennedy's own words. Combining a remarkable audio CD with the insights of two of America's preeminent historians, the result is a unique look at the world-changing words and presidency of John F. Kennedy.
In the thousand days of his presidency, John F. Kennedy spoke about many of the enduring concerns of our union. His optimism, personal strength and far-reaching vision helped guide the nation through crisis, spoke to the dreams of its people and for a too brief moment guided America into the future.
From the author of the #1 bestselling biography An Unfinished Life, Robert Dallek, and the author of Washington's General, Terry Golway, Let Every Nation Know, is a book unlike any other. With an audio CD that includes 32 speeches, debates and interviews that forge a fresh portrait of John F. Kennedy and his presidency, this is a singular experience.

Eloquent, But Hard to Comprehend.......2007-09-24
Robert Dallak and Terry Goldway bring to life masterfully in Kennedy's own words a portrait of an age with a president that was young but gifted politician. From the "Ask Not" Speech to the speech of the Berlin Wall, Kennedy's voice enhances the masterful biography of all Kennedy's charm, love of words, and deep, moral conscience. To me, it brings back the era when the world was on nuclear hair-trigger alert, the press was oppressing, and CIA secrets were gossip for the public. However, I do not think middle school students should read this book because the words of kennedy are still to deep to grasp at this age. The words of Kennedy cut deep into this nation's very soul, and continues to do so.
Perhaps the best of all the books on JFK.......2007-07-18
This was the kind of book that once I started reading I couldn't put down. I finished it very quickly.
I was five years old when he was killed. He was the first President I remember first hand. I remember that in Kindergarden we were told that President George Washington was the Father of our country. In my five year old mind, I thought JFK was the Father of our country, because he too was President like George Washington. This book gave me a chance to hear in his own words what was going on in a time I barely remember as a young child.
His words still speak to us today. This book for me was what I needed to read at this time to remind me of what is important. We as a country have moved so far away from the vision of JFK and it has inspired me to get back to my roots and to get back on track and to try and get our country back on track.
Let Every Nation Know. JFK in his own words........2007-01-15
A must have book for all age groups interested in the life and times of JFK. To hear the actual speeches of JFK on CD are inspirational and even in this day and age very moving. The book and CD transported me back to that era even though I was 8 at the time and brought back many memories.
An excellent book.Highly recommended.
A political biography honed from John F. Kennedy's own words .......2006-08-19
Here's a unique coverage: a political biography honed from John F. Kennedy's own words blending an audio CD with the insights of two notable historians. From issues ranging from Peace Corps politics to Kennedy's debates before his Presidency and his preparations for war, LET EVERY NATION KNOW proves far more compelling - and provides far more insights - than most.

A Better Time.......2006-08-17
Listening to the accompaning CD is both stimulating and depressing. The literacy and restraint of Kennedy's language so starkly contrasts to what we hear from the current administration. There is much irony as well. In the clip from the debates, Nixon tells the voters that as president he will be a role model for the nation's youth, just as Ike had been. But most depressing is the way this book and CD demonstrate the change in what voters now find persuasive. These are not sound bits or simple messages. These are intelligent and sophisticated speeches. These speeches suggest that Kennedy assumed that the voters were intelligent and that he respected their intelligence. Compare that to the current, simplistic messages that accuse opponents of being in league with al Qaeda. While Nixon was no stranger to the simplistic attack, it is striking to listen to his language and compare it to the current Republican leadership. To suggest that an early time was better is almost a cliche, but when you read and listen to these speeches the evidence seems overwhelming. This was a time when many of our leaders spoke with eloquence and addressed complex issues (Stevenson, Dirkson, Mansfield, Nelson Rockefeller, Robert Kennedy, and many others). More importantly, the voters seemed to actually listen to these speeches. There are great lessons in this modest volume.

Customer Reviews:
Moving and Powerful.......2004-07-01
When you first listen to this, it takes a while to get into it. The first speech at the 1964 democratic convention has a poor audio quality and RFK takes a while to get warmed up before we hear the famous Shakepearean ode to his recently deceased brother JFK. Some editing would have helped that one. Then we hear RFK give a heartfelt, but sincere speech on the need for young people to repudiate bigotry at Ole Miss in 1966. Still pretty relevant. The 1967 speech on ghetto conditions shows amazing insight for a White man who was born rich.
But the tour de force here is the improvised speech to Black Indianapolis residents upon the assassination of Martin Luther King. I've heard excerpts of this before, but to hear it in what appears to be its entirety is extremely moving and one of the best recorded speeches I've ever heard aside from MLK himself and Nelson Mandela's CD. To hear how RFK was able to speak so sincerely and hopefully on such a tragic occasion will really make you beleive in the nest of human nature and that alone is worht the price of admission.
Next we hear a more measured and formal speech on the aftermath of the King killing recorded a day later. Still worht a listen about the futility of violence, all the more ironic considering that RFK himself would soon become the victim of such violence.
I've read books that complied RFK's speeches, but that does not match actually hearing them. Do youself a favor and get this. Now all that needs to be done is to release a DVD of the 1988 documetnary RFK in His Own Words.
RFK: In His Own Words.......2001-01-06
RFK: In His Own Words gives the listener a taste of the atmosphere during the turbulent and dynamic times of the 1960s. It depicts RFK as one of those rare leaders who had the ability to inspire an entire generation not only in the United States but around the world with his eloquence and appeal for a better life for all. He challenged the way we think about ourselves and each other and sought to close the gaps between rich and poor, black and white. RFK: In His Own Words begins with his memorable speech in tribute to his brother at the 1964 Democratic National Convention and contains several speeches addressing the many societal issues of the 60s, mainly the divisions resulting from racial tensions and the public opposition to the war in Vietnam. You begin to get a grasp of RFK's political views and you witness his maturation as a politician and statesman. From his statement announcing his candidacy for president to his touching and largely impromptu announcement of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to a stunned audience in Indianapolis and his appeal for compassion and love and not hatred and division. It concludes with an emotional eulogy at his funeral by his brother Senator Ted Kennedy that leaves you with thoughts on what could have been if not for the tragic loss of yet another Kennedy brother who has been taken from us at a time when his leadership was most needed.
EXCELLENT!!.......2000-09-18
This is a single CD approximately 50 minutes long that provides highlights of some of RFK's best, and most memorable speeches. There are 12 tracks including RFK's speech at the democratic national convention in 1964 and his speech announcing the assasination of Martin Luther King.
This is an excellent introduction to the RFK's political beliefs, and reminds the listener why he continues to captivate the nation's hopes. The CD jacket provides a brief historical background to each of the speeches and is helpful for those with less knowledge of the current events of that time. I would also recommend a compilation of speech excerpts put together by his son Maxwell Kennedy entitled "To Make Gentle the Life of this World." Neither source provides the complete text of his speeches, but they distill the essence of what he offered America in his time.
Excellent!.......2000-08-04
This book is an excellent compliation of Robert Kennedy's speeches. The speeches give an excellent overview of the times and issues Robert Kennedy was living in and his responses to same. His frequent references to classical literature not only serve to augment his points, but to include the listener/reader in his knowledge base. Robert Kennedy was a man who was universally recognized as a diligent worker and one who not only set, but met personal goals. His determination was evidenced from the football field (where he played with a broken leg in college to secure the coveted Harvard letter) to the presidential platform, where he held his own with some rather formidable competitors/opponents. His knowledge of and appreciation for classical literature is a true nod to his intelligence. He became self-educated in adult life classical works. He also became self educated and personally involved in the lives and issues of minorities and persons living below the poverty line. The contrast between these areas of his self education further emphasize the complexity of this man. Robert Kennedy comes across as sincere in his efforts and his work record will certainly support that finding. Robert Kennedy was by far the most interesting of the brothers of his generation and his work record was exceptional in his tenacity and dogged determination.
Customer Reviews:
For young, restless people seeking to find a way...........2006-11-02
I first read this book about 20-25 years ago. It was a watershed moment for me to read how Robert Kennedy sought consensus for his views, and how he ran up against those who didn't care to be a force for change. One can feel through the pages (as I did) how RFK was continuously haunted by the death of his brother only one year prior to these interviews. This was the text that prompted me to participate in our democracy. As a young man, it also showed me how I could get more of what I wanted by seeking support for my own vision.

LISTEN TO ROBERT KENNEDY.......2000-08-04
This collection of speeches provides a good picture of the man who would be president in 1968. It is an interesting progression of his thoughts on the issues of the day, issues which remain relevant today. In mulling over his words, one is struck by the man's sincerity -- I remember when I was a child, I would say, "Senator Kennedy is for real! He really does care about people!" The man's unusually high level of committment is readily apparent in his words. He was obviously somebody who set and met personal goals throughout his life -- in 1965 he climbed Mt. Kennedy, although he was an acrophobe; in adult life he educated himself in classical literature, thus increasing his knowlege base; he became personally involved with minorities and persons living in poverty and made these issues his own personal quest. He made himself accessible to his constituents and his works today serve as a model of a very committed man. This is something worth having.

Book Description
Published from the manuscript copy in the National Archives, Eunice Harrison's memoir of life in British Columbia from 1860 to 1906 offers one of the earliest accounts of the province by a woman. With verve and humour she describes everyday life in early Victoria and Vancouver.
As a young woman, she travelled across the Strait in the tugboat Etta White to make music, take part in theatricals and witness a Native ceremonial dance. After her marriage to Eli Harrison, a well known circuit court judge, she travelled the Cariboo road with her husband, recording her impressions of justice being meted out in the rough, pioneer world of the BC Interior. Her account of the social customs of the day, through the eyes of a woman, is both acute and in structive. The memoir concludes with her experience of the catastrophic 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire which she lived through while on a visit to the city with her two young children. Her account of the destruction and chaos she witnessed as she made her way to safety through the burning city makes for gripping reading. The Judge's Wife includes many historic photographs.
Book Description
Fiorello LaGuardia has found his bard laureate in Alyn Brodsky, the author of this major new biography. Brodsky captures the boundless energy, the personal incorruptibility, and the zest for accomplishment that LaGuardia brought to everything he tackled. LaGuardia's three terms as mayor were spent building and unifying today's New York and it still stands as his greatest legacy. Brodsky also does full justice to LaGuardia's early successes, most notably as a commander of U.S. air forces during World War I, and as a Washington congressman from New York whose early support for FDR's New Deal was repaid many times over by massive federal funding for a de-pres-sion-wracked city. As mayor, LaGuardia began his greatest achieve-ment, unifying five almost independent (and politically corrupt) boroughs into the great urban center that today flourishes as the most dynamic metropolis anywhere in the world.
Customer Reviews:
Two promises kept .......2005-12-19
The title of Alyn Brodsky's history, "The Great Mayor: Fiorello La Guardia and the Making of the City of New York" suggests that his book will discuss two things: Mayor LaGuardia and how he shaped New York City. He delivers on both promises and then some. (Although I might argue that a more precise subtitle would be "...the Making of the Modern City of New York.")
This is a research-filled tome, but by no means dry. LaGuardia was too feisty a character to be made to look bland--and Brodsky lets LaGuardia exhibit all his unbridled emotions. But he doesn't let the reader forget the mind--the brilliance--behind the bellowings, poundings, and outrages. All of LaGuardia's ingenius (and some of his few not-so-ingenius) proposals and enactments are presented here--not just during his terms as mayor of the City of New York, but as a lawyer, congressman, and commander of America's brand new air force.
But this book is not an appeal for LaGuardia's sainthood. There was too much sulking, too much mean-spiritednes, too much selfishness to even think of such a canonization. What is testimony to Fiorello's greatness is that his greatness is still remembered to this day, in spite of the warts and all. So much for fulfilling the first promise.
In responding to the second promise, Brodsky clearly presents the City of New York before LaGuardia's career and the City after LaGuardia's career. The corruption, mismanagement, Tammany-domination of the City during the first three decades of the 20th Century are extensively rendered. And although these three things certainly did not go away after LaGuardia's leadership, they certainly were corrected to an enormous degree. And, who knows, if he had had his way, maybe they might have been eliminated all together.
Style-wise, the book is quite readable. I didn't fret over the occasional syntactical confusions but some of the metaphors and similes were jaw-droppingly bad. But I'm picking at stupid things here. "The Great Mayor: Fiorello La Guardia and the Making of the City of New York" is a book as great as the mayor it wants us to remember.
An Above Average Biography.......2004-08-09
Alyn Brodsky's "The Great Mayor" seems ambivalent about the life and career of Fiorello La Guardia. Brodsky at times leans too favorably upon the often irratic behavior of the Little Flower in the consular service, in Congress, and in City Hall. Nevertheless, his portrayal of Fiorello's decline both politically and personally is quite frank and adds dimension to this well-researched and well-documented work.
A real treat that Brodsky's book offers is a perceptive political history of the City of New York and its characters. Tammany Hall receives a drubbing, as does Robert Moses, the venerated creator of the New York parks system.
Unfortunately, the book is poorly edited and suffers from a generous sprinkling of obvious syntax errors. A truly magnificent biography would not have seen such missteps. In the end, "The Great Mayor" remains a noteworthy contribution to the body of works about New York's history. It deserves to be read - and will be read moderately quickly - by fans of the Big Apple.
Thorough and entertaining.......2003-10-15
I have never been to New York and confess that I don't know as much as I should about the history of that great city. I was very pleased to find that Alyn Brodsky's book was not only educational but entertaining. I admit there were some parts that probably would appeal more to scholars and historians than to an average reader, but overall the book was fascinating. Mr. Brodsky did an excellent job presenting not only the huge number of facts and figures, but also the human, personal sides of the mayor and his people.
Guy from Katonah is a moron.......2003-10-15
That guy from Katonah must be a moron. Maybe he can't read at all. The book is an excellent, well-researched biography and an easy read. Brodsky does a wonderful job of bringing to life a man who was a real character and who defined NYC as we know it. He stands out all the more as a man of principle when compared to the kind of creeps we see today in politics. Admittedly FLG seemed to change into a bit of a megalomaniac toward the end of his career, but he still accomplished a great deal both for NYC and for the people of the US, whom he saw as his constituency. This is a first-class book. I highly recommend it.
It better get better........2003-10-14
I'm truly stunned by this book. I can't believe how bad it is. I've only read 30 pages and I'm not sure that I can continue. I have read a fair number of books that I didn't like hoping all the while that they would get better but I have almost no hope of even making that claim for this book. It has all the stylistic flair of a high school essay and many of the problems typical of that quality of writing. Twice in the 30 pages that I have read I almost threw the book down in disgust. The degree of difference between the reviews and my opinion is so large that I wonder about my sanity. Could these reviews really be that far off base? It seems to me that they are.
