Book Description

Unique among presidents' wives, Lady Bird Johnson was not only one of the leading environmentalists of the twentieth century, she also redefined the institution of First Lady. In this first book in an innovative new series, Lewis Gould shows why Mrs. Johnson ranks with Eleanor Roosevelt as a significant innovator of the First Lady role.

Building upon his much admired Lady Bird Johnson and the Environment, Gould has refocused and revised his thinking to create a fresh, informative, and entertaining new portrait of LBJ's First Lady. Using Lady Bird's White House papers and interviews with her and her close associates, Gould captures both her spirit and considerable achievements during her tenure in the White House. He shows how Lady Bird's efforts to advance the cause of beautifying highways and the city of Washington, D.C.-which included attending legislative strategy sessions and lobbying for the programs that she endorsed-represented a new departure for a First Lady. He also tells how she devised and developed the staff, procedures, and tactics that subsequent First Ladies have since employed in the public arena.

The book sheds light on the personal side of Mrs. Johnson's activism as well, telling how her appearances on behalf of environmental issues were often marred by antiwar protests and how she agonized with her husband over his decision not to run for reelection. It also reveals details of her life after LBJ's death, showing that the consistency with which she pursued her vision of the environment has added to her historical influence.

Today Lady Bird's efforts are commemorated at such sites as a grove in Redwoods National Park and a park by the Potomac River that both bear her name. Equally important, she herself participated in the policymaking process in a more direct way than any previous First Lady had dared. All in all, Lady Bird Johnson set a high standard for future First Ladies to follow, while raising the environmental awareness of millions of Americans. For those reasons especially, her legacy will endure.

This book is part of the Modern First Ladies series.

3 out of 5 stars The Yellow Bird of Texas........2006-08-21

As First Lady, Mrs. Johnson took on an outside project of having wildflowers planted along the Interstates of her hometown, Texas. The beauty along the highways (they lack dense trees and foliage like Tennessee) was so noted, and many years later we have red poppies and other wildflowers in clumps and bunches at some spots along our wide system of interstates. Perhaps other states have followed suit.

Claudia (called Lady Bird from her youth) chose a jonquil-yellow long gown with matched coat, complete with sable, to emulate the preceding First Lady. The color of bright, vivid yellow is probably the reason her gown is not in the Smithsonian collection. It might have gone across big in Dallas, but not in D.C., even if it was created by a New Yorker. Mary Todd Lincoln chose a royal purple velvet gown, as befitting her wealthy status in Kentucky. You'd think she might have come from Knoxville as purple is the choice of many women here.

Claudia's father was a farmer and businessman aptly named Thomas Jefferson Taylor. She had a fabulous education and graduated from the University of Texas with a law degree thirty years before Hillary got hers. So she could have been the first First Lady to be a lawyer, though she did not practice as she was married soon after graduation and raised two lovely daughters.

As wife of the Vice president, she went on official trips with her husband to 33 countries. She went to Dallas as the wife of the Vice President and returned as the First Lady. The assassin's bullet took the life of the most popular U. S. President ever in the state of Texas on November 22, 1963. Lyndon took the oath of office on the plane carrying Kennedy's body back to the nation's capital. He was always an impatient man and led this country into an inner turmoil which will never be over. Amid the chaotic confusion that followed after JFK's untimely death, she was thrust to the forefront, assuming duties and responsibilities of hostess at the White House during the days of deep mourning. All traces of the Kennedys were obliterated as if they had never been in the White House. It was a travesty against such a fine politician, his family, and the country who stayed glued to the t.v. set to watch John-John salute his father's casket on the horse-driven cortege. Nothing the Johnsons achieved in office will ever erase that from the souls and consciences of his "fellow Americans." She was the perfect mate for the politician who had to have his way -- gracious and kind. Her family background helped her to serve our country in a stately way.

    Book Description

A Deliberate Life is the inspiring and oftentimes humorous story of Pamela Haskin and her life in the Alaskan Bush. She says, “I’m not trying to escape society as so many do who come to the Bush. I’m choosing a lifestyle! I want a life with adventure and purpose.” Life on the homestead was certainly different from the one Pam had known; a woodpile instead of a thermostat, no running water or indoor plumbing, no electricity, and no phone. And, she chose this! Go figure.

Pam touches something in each of us that says life can be more than ordinary. We do indeed have a choice, and we either exercise or surrender that choice each day. Pam’s choices changed her life dramatically and set an example for the rest of us. Between these pages you will find a hearty and entertaining example of the power of choice.

    5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Read.......2005-07-26

"The strength to live a life of nonconformity is a virtue." I think that quote sums up this book very well. It's about getting the life you want and not simply accepting the life that falls before you. The book is funny and witty, it has moments that caused tears as well. It left me wanting more. I think that anyone would enjoy this book. It's a quick read and Pam has an amazing ability to draw the reader in so that they can experience a little piece of heaven as well.

5 out of 5 stars The Community-Based Social Marketing Primer.......2005-10-10

I don't know if McKenzie-Mohr coined the buzz-terms used in Community-based Social Marketing, but he covers them (at the introductory level) completely in this book. Case studies and personal experiences offer practical examples to the lingo commonly used in CBSM, plus plenty of articles are referenced for further reading. If you've heard about "Prompts" and "Norms" associated with CBSM and need to know what everyone's talking about, this is a great place to start.

        Book Description

Today's natural resource managers must be able to navigate among the complicated interactions and conflicting interests of diverse stakeholders and decisionmakers. Technical and scientific knowledge, though necessary, are not sufficient. Science is merely one component in a multifaceted world of decision making. And while the demands of resource management have changed greatly, natural resource education and textbooks have not. Until now.

Ecosystem Management represents a different kind of textbook for a different kind of course. It offers a new and exciting approach that engages students in active problem solving by using detailed landscape scenarios that reflect the complex issues and conflicting interests that face today's resource managers and scientists. Focusing on the application of the sciences of ecology and conservation biology to real-world concerns, it emphasizes the intricate ecological, socioeconomic, and institutional matrix in which natural resource management functions, and illustrates how to be more effective in that challenging arena.

Each chapter is rich with exercises to help facilitate problem-based learning. The main text is supplemented by boxes and figures that provide examples, perspectives, definitions, summaries, and learning tools, along with a variety of essays written by practitioners with on-the-ground experience in applying the principles of ecosystem management.

Accompanying the textbook is an instructor's manual that provides a detailed overview of the book and specific guidance on designing a course around it.

Ecosystem Management grew out of a training course developed and presented by the authors for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at its National Training Center in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. In 20 offerings to more than 600 natural resource professionals, the authors learned a great deal about what is needed to function successfully as a professional resource manager. The book offers important insights and a unique perspective dervied from that invaluable experience.

5 out of 5 stars A highly recommended contribution to Environmental Studies.......2003-04-19

The collective and collaborative effort of Gary K. Meffe (Adjunct Professor, Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, University of Florida), Larry A. Nielsen (Fisheries biologist and Den of the College of Natural Resources, North Carolina State University), Richard L. Knight (Professor of Wildlife Conservation, Colorado State University), and Dennis A. Schenborn (Chief of Planning and Budget for the Bureau of Fisheries Management and Habitat protection of the Wisconsin State Department of Natural Resources), Ecosystem Management: Adaptive, Community- Based Conservation is an intelligently organized, "reader friendly" textbook which is an ideal resource and teaching tool for discusses a wide range of environmental issues including: genetic diversity in ecosystem management, landscape-level conservation, single-species land management, the skill and art of keeping fragile ecosystems in balance; methodology, examples, and mathematical models. An astute presented and detailed college-level text, Ecosystem Management is a welcome and highly recommended contribution to Environmental Studies reference collections in general, and Ecosystem Management curriculum reading lists in particular.

            Book Description

Both realism and justice demand that efforts to conserve biological diversity address human needs as well. The most promising hope of accomplishing such a goal lies in locally based conservation efforts - an approach that seeks ways to make local communities the beneficiaries and custodians of conservation efforts.

Natural Connections focuses on rural societies and the conservation of biodiversity in rural areas. It represents the first systematic analysis of locally based efforts, and includes a comprehensive examination of cases from around the world where the community-based approach is used. The book provides:

This book is the most complete and intelligent essay I have seen for the past 10 years of work with wildlife conservation and management. Should I have read before, it would have given me more insight in my career. This book is the result of an enormous work load done by scientists, politicians and anthropologists very well compiled in 400 pages.
