The book does give a good quick overview for a new owner or someone considering the breed. I did find some useful information, some good training tips and the price was good for its content. I was looking for a bit more specific information, mainly on how much to feed this breed, which I did not find. This would be the type of book to check out from a library rather than a home resource.

Straight and to the point.......2006-03-11

This is a quick book to read, but although small has a lot of information packed into. Throught the streamlining of the book, the author and editors managed to also make it readable in a format that flows quickly. Great for potential owners of Aussies that do not have a lot of time to sit and read a longer or less readable book.

This is about the best book on the subject I have read with one exception. I would have given FIVE stars except for something about the title and content;I have read most all of it before VERBATIM. This book seems to have a different cover photo,a softcover vs.hardcover,different publication date,authored by "editors" vs. a specific person,and two seemingly separate publishers than The Australian Shepherd:How To Keep A HAppy Healthy Pet. This is the "revised" edition. It would have been nice to know that this more current{by two years!} edition was ESSENTIALLY the same book I already purchased! Why change the cover? Anyway,caveat emptor. I recommend the public library or the internet as additional sources of information contained in this book{s}. Got me this time.

A great book for all the Aussie Shepherd lovers like me. Has everything from washing your dog to telling you if teaching your dog to heel is right.

Fantastically Entertaining.......2007-05-17

It is unbelievable to me there is one bad review here. It has been years since I could NOT put down a book until I was finished, reading well into the early morning. The story seemed at first to drag but once it took off I was engrossed. I was leery of a non-Dalziel/Pascoe mystery but am so glad R.H. decided on a vacation of his regular series. The ending was unreal, the plot wrapped in an eloquent bow. I strongly recommend this book as well as anything else by this author.

Not a Ghost of a Chance.......2007-04-03

Hard to believe that the creator of Dalziel and Pascoe could come up with this piece of dreck. At best this is a book for extremely credulous mid-adolescent readers, not adults. But even then....Neither of the central characters are especially attractive. One is an obnoxious young math whizz and logician who seems always to have just the right kind of knowledge to push the implausible story along. The other is a former seminarian who communes with the spirits of long dead relatives and whatever other ghosts who happen to be in the neighbourhood. Add in an English village full of stock "colourful" characters, and a running time of well over 500 none too action-packed pages, and you end up with what this book is: a recipe for disaster.

Clever story, terrific writing.......2007-03-23

One of my favorite gems is the saying "never complain, never explain". It was offered up by Frek, who is just one of several characters that are really great characters. Try to go a day without complaining. Then try to spend the next day without saying anything bad about someone who is not present. These practices can improve your life.
Another was something like "the kind of a place where not only did they stare at strangers, they probably pointed at the sky whenever a plane flew overhead."

Well, what can I add, except that Hill's colloquialisms, one liners and Australian/British mix of home grown vernacular make the book a joy to read aside from the entertaining plot. There's a gem on every page. A great romp of a plot with interesting places, historical background and wonderful characters.

Pretty good.......2006-09-22

Overall, I liked this book. It had a lot going for it in terms of plot, characters, and unexpected developments. There is a spooky isolated village in the hillside feel to the town, and a nice interplay between ancient, past, and present events. I did think the book would have gone from good to great if the writing had been better. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, and I did like the book. There were just certain things that could have been touched up by an editor - the overuse of exlamation points and random jokes that were out of place in the narrative, for one thing. Also, some of the situations seemed almost forced - Sam snapping at Mig every second to create 'friction' between them, except that some of her angry remarks make no sense in the context of what is happening. Overall I recommend as light reading.

Venom House.......2000-02-27

Set in Queensland, Bony's home state, the novel focuses on the disparity of character between 2 sisters and their brother. One sister is tougher than the majority of stockmen, the other as refined as the ladies of leisure in a city mansion. The brother is a virtual prisoner maintained in a purile state yet has great strength. They live with the housekeeper isolated on an island in a lagoon on which Venom House stands. Upfield uses the house's savage history to support his contention that the sins of the ancestors can be visited upon the living and Bony has to battle with his aboriginal fear of darkness to solve the succession of murders. The normal characters of solid local policeman and reliable bushman appear but this time the pretty "squatters" daughter expriences a quite different role.

Not Amazing.......2007-02-26

This book is apparently the bible of Hawaiian Studies. Don't expect a typical modern anthropological text. 'Jargon free' is a lie. It doesn't have the typical form of other books of its type, instead there is an avalanche of Hawaiian terminology. To anyone who isn't familiar with the language this is an incredibly amount of jargon to keep track off, especially since terms are not defined or listed in any traditional way.

If you are considering this book there are two possible truths about you: One, you are familiar with the language and culture either by birth or by drinking the kool aid, or two, it is assigned reading. If you're the latter be prepared for painstakingly dense reading, with lots of pointless memorization because you will forget it once the test is over. If you're the former, enjoy, its very informative and interesting.

The Polynesian Family System in Ka'u, Hawai'i.......2005-12-04

Excellent non fiction portrayal of everyday life in a true paradise. Written by a great team; Dr. Handy, an emminent anthropologist and authority on religion; and Mrs Puki , the grand old lady of Hawian studies. Both are full time Hawiians and write directly from their own experience in simple, jargon free language. Best of its kind, true, and a pleasure to read!

who we are and who we were.......2000-10-18

This is an excellent insight into what traditional Hawaiian life was like, addressing the normal activities in day to day life. Oral history is used throughout the book to bring forth specific stories as instances and examples. If one is interested in Hawaiian history(this is not mythology) this is highly recommended.
