No luck for the Tremere.......2004-04-13
And really, who cares about the "children down the well"? The author but noone else. There are enough freakish monsters in the WoD as it is, and if you can't use those to fill a book but have to make up new ones, then you're not a good author. The children show up in the Tremere clannovel where no reader wants them and where they are never explained, and they show up here too, then disappear for no good reason. They just provide us with gross images of bloated body parts, again and again and again.
And when did Tremere become a sisterhood? Regent Sturbridge refers to her underlings as her "daughters" several times -- where are the men? Oh, some show up, but it is clear they are just an exception to the general rule, which is that this War Chantry is a Women's Chantry. How odd. How unrealistic. How unexplained. Perhaps it fulfills some fantasy of the author's, but I remain unimpressed.
As others have pointed out, the author fails to finish his plots. He is unable to make something out of Aisling Sturbridge's visit to Vienna, and he is unable to even give an explanation to the bombing! Incredible! The one thing you were dead sure had to be explained, and we get nothing! And the arch villain walks away, no bad guy is punished, and the heroine dies. Wow. Talk about a waste of our time and money.
Incredibly, the author is even sloppy enough to include the same dialogue twice: once in the U.S., and once in Vienna. Apparently he moved it from one part of the trilogy to another and forgot to delete it from its first spot. I have never seen that kind of ineptitude before, and I hope I'll never see it again.
In the beginning of the trilogy a computer reveals that the data about kindred arriving in NYC shows up as a complex Thaumaturgic symbol, which convinces two astute characters that some sneaky stuff is going on. Later on, the locale where the arrivals are greeted is blown up, and we eagerly await the unavoidable quest to reveal and punish the bad guys. And yet ... nothing. Then, the heroine is chased by the Inquisitors throughout the trilogy because ... what? She is surprised by seeing them the first time, jumps through a portal, and seals off the other end of it with a forbidden pentagram? Like, who cares? Is this a conflict worthy to build her story on? Shouldn't it be like, you know, something important instead?
Here's to hoping this author never writes for White Wolf again. God, how boring and primitive he makes his stories.

Product Description
Neither, Death, Devastation, Destruction, Desertion, nor Divorce can destroy us when we learn the Power of God s Might. God uses the lives of Biblical Widows to instruct us in His ability to deliver us. While discussing these Godly women, she shares the pain and victory relating to the deaths of her late husbands. Her prayer and hope is that you will gain strength and grow in the Lord, who is the Widows Might. Jesus is your strength and after all, It s all about Him! Forward by Pastor Ramsey It is like the proverbial elephant in the room. And of all the fine specialty ministries that exist today, no one has truly spoken clearly and passionately about the spiritual, emotional and very personal effects of widowhood. When we say until death do us part, the thought that we may have to someday bury the love of our lives is the farthest thing from our minds. But sadly enough, if the Lord delays His coming, widowhood is not only possible it is quite probable. In this thoughtful, provocative, and extremely insightful book, Dr. Brown expresses a compassionate bedside manner as she provides us a road map for facing life after one of its most tender terminal points: death of a spouse. May this book bring you insight, and if necessary, help you heal from the permanency of your widowhood. But more importantly, my prayer is that you will discover The Widow s Might. Thank you Dr. Brown! The world has been waiting for this book.

Product Description
And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites . . . Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in than all they which have cast into the treasury: For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had. - Mark 12:42 -- 44 One of the most devastating trials life can deal is the loss of a spouse. Women around the world are faced with this tragedy, and yet their battle goes largely unnoticed. They often feel alone, forgotten, and abandoned, left to bear the weight of their world without the help of the one they need most. And yet, through time and tribulations, many come to understand that no matter what happens, they will never truly be forsaken. In The Widow's Might, Ann B. Brown recognizes and celebrates the courage displayed by widows as they face the pain of death and loss and find within themselves the strength to overcome.

Who Killed Kirov?: The Kremlin's Greatest Mystery
Amy Knight Manufacturer: Hill & Wang ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0809097036 |
Amazon.com
In contrast to the brusque, standoffish Stalin, Leningrad party chief and Politburo member Sergei Kirov was charismatic and approachable--a real muzhnik, or man of the people. His rise through the ranks of the communist party to become the prize orator of Stalin's regime was aided by his popularity and his devotion to the cause. The question of who killed Kirov has perplexed Russian bureaucrats and historians alike since the apparent murder took place in December 1934. Although the Stalin regime immediately accused and brutally killed alleged suspects--and then used the murders as a catalyst for massive purges of its enemies--lack of definitive evidence continues to shroud the case in mystery and keeps it rife with speculation to this day. In Who Killed Kirov? The Kremlin's Greatest Mystery, Amy Knight draws on compelling new evidence and presents the most convincing account to date of the Kirov murder and the momentous events surrounding it.In order fully to understand the murder, according to Knight, the reader must learn what kind of man Kirov was, how he rose to power within the Soviet political system, and how Stalin came to dominate that system. Consequently, she devotes much of the book to Kirov's personal story, his role in forging the Bolshevik regime, and his relationships with key party leaders. Although Kirov's murder and its tragic aftermath remain the narrative's focal point, Knight successfully broadens her readers' understanding of the entire Stalinist era.
A research associate at George Washington University and author of two additional studies of Russian politics, Knight supplements her 270-page study with maps, illustrations, chronologies, a glossary of names, diagrams of the Soviet political hierarchy, and ample notes. Well researched and thoroughly documented, Who Killed Kirov? remains accessible to the general reader. --Bertina Loeffler Sedlack
Book Description
An exciting analysis of Russia's crime of the century, the assassination of Stalin's greatest rival. The 1934 murder of the charismatic politician Sergei Kirov sparked Stalin's brutal purges, and speculation about it still fascinates the Russians. Who killed Kirov, and why? In Russia, conspiracy theories about Kirov have abounded, and scholars throughout the world have tackled various pieces of the story--but definitive evidence has eluded them. Now Amy Knight has combed the recently opened Russian archives to reconstruct this fascinating crime and analyze its effect on the Russian people. The result is at once an intriguing murder mystery and a major piece of scholarship that sheds new light on the terrors of Stalin.
Customer Reviews:
Best for the casual reader.......2001-06-14
I agree with all those who take exception to the title; this is more a biography of Kirov than it is a "whodunnit?" Knight's treatment of Kirov's life and times is dry at times but adequate. When she turns her attention to the murder itself, the book begins to take hold. Knight lays out a great many facts, and shows what inferences can be drawn from those facts, and yet her leap from those inferences to her conclusion remains unsatisfying. For example, she quotes Trotsky's initial reaction to the murder; Trotsky was of the view that Stalin did not order the killing, but would sure as heck take advantage of it. Knight says Trotsky was wrong, but her arguments as to why are unconvincing.
A Good Read.......2000-07-17
I was surprised Ms Knight made no real reference to the fact that Nikolaev, with neither emotional nor physical training in assasination, was able to not only calmly shoot a man to death accurately, but do it close enough to more than liklely have his brains splattered across his ( Nikolaev's ) face. The manner in which Kirov was murdered, a single bullet in the back of the head / neck is almost exactly the method used by the NKVD during their executions.
Who doesn't know?.......2000-07-17
There are many who believe that Kennedy was not solely the victim of Oswald, and while one can speculate who actually pulled the trigger in the case of the murder of Kirov, it is the less important part of the incident, what Soviet History might have been under Kirov is the story.
Kirov embodied many things that Stalin did not and could not emulate; he was charismatic, "The People" truly liked the man, and he was not the disfigured paranoid maniac that was Stalin. When the fateful vote took place and Kirov had clearly become a rival to Stalin's power, it was only a question of how soon he would die, and how large the purge that followed his death would be. It would indeed be massive, for how else was Stalin to show how devastated and full of revenge he was, for the death of his "friend" Kirov? Stalin had no friends.
Stalin wanted Kirov dead, he ordered the killing, and whether the NKVD, or as is likely the poor guy they picked up and pinned it on actually did the killing, the killer is secondary. The story here is that Stalin could carry out the hit on Kirov, knowing he would be suspect number one, and further being 100% confident that no individual or group would accuse him, that is part of the interesting History here. The bloodbath that followed was just Stalin getting rid of more of his "enemies" real or mostly imagined.
If there were a book written for the purpose of identifying every killer Stalin employed, the number of books would run into the tens of millions. The fact that he could kill on such an unprecedented scale, that he could remain in control, that he managed to always have enough believers/supporters/future victims to back him is what fascinates. Kirov may have been the marquee kill of Stalin's reign, but he was just that, one more body
I would like to read a well written historically based work of fiction that posits what would have happened had Kirov not been killed, what if Stalin was blamed, what if Kirov took control of the former USSR. That is where the interest lies.
The title of this book is bordering on misleading. Nothing inside the book is as intriguing as the question asked on the cover wishes you to believe.
What's wrong with Occam's Razor?.......2000-02-21
Unfortunately she dismisses - almost casually, as did Conquest - what is the most simple, and therefore most probable, explanation of the reason for the killing.
Of course, we all like a mystery, and most people at the time not in the know were convinced there must be a plot behind it, as the author records, due to the consequences they foresaw, even if not in their total enormity and savagery. However, while the book was published in 1999, it does not refer to an article published in the London Guardian on 23.5.98 which reports from Moscow on a certain Yuri Zhukov who says he has seen the 74 volumes of NKVD files on the Kirov case in the course of writing a book on the Russian VIP bodyguard service. He says the files show that Kirov was a philanderer who arranged assignations in his Kshesinskaya Palace residence, that he was having an affair with Milda Draule, the wife of the assassin Leonid Nikolayev, that she was in the vicinity at the time of the killing (being interviewed by NKVD within 15 minutes), that Borisov was not Kirov's bodyguard but deputy chief of security at Smolny, and that the real bodyguard was outside the building because he knew his master was having an assignation.
Of course all this may be a fabrication; I am contacting the Guardian correspondent with a view to finding out more. However, I am not an expert in Soviet history, so I cannot go back to the alleged source in Russia. But I was very disappointed to find that there was no mention of Zhukov in the book's index, and that what is apparently the true, if banal, explanation of the murder is so easily discounted.
A misleading title.......2000-01-10
