Book Description
"By revealing her own story, Mani Feniger reminds us that our biggest fear can become our most profound teacher."
—Geneen Roth, bestselling author of When Food is Love
Your heart pounds, palms sweat, eyes blur, breathing becomes difficult, and you feel dizzy or disoriented. You're in a panic, even though there is no apparent danger. Every year millions of people suffer from anxiety disorders—now the number one mental health issue among women, and second only to substance abuse among men.
In her new book,
Journey from Anxiety to Freedom, author Mani Feniger shares her own struggle with panic and phobias, taking the readers on a journey from her terrifying first panic attack, to her renewed confidence driving across bridges, flying in airplanes, and finally taking a long-desired trip abroad. Readers may identify with her story and the vivid descriptions of seven other men and women whose lives were once compromised by fear. Anxiety sufferers will emerge with practical tools and motivation, knowing that others like themselves have faced their worst fears, and now live with peace of mind.
By sharing the inspiring stories of diverse people, including Howard Liebold, M.D., who wrote the foreword,
Journey from Anxiety to Freedom calmly walks readers through:
·Uncovering their own anxiety secrets
·Finding their turning points
·Designing their own program for healing
·Practicing exercises and meditations
·Developing skills and attitudes that promote trust
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource.......2007-09-10
The great thing about this book is that it isn't trying to promote any single approach to dealing with anxiety. The information is well presented, easy to understand, and is written with the understanding and compassion of one who's been there. It covers a multitude of techniques and is very helpful. I bought two copies, one to keep, and one to loan out to other people. I have a Master's degree in Counseling, and in my opinion, this book is one of the best on the topic.
Not Impressed.......2007-07-26
I was not impressed with this book. I have read better. Triumph Over Fear by Jerilyn Ross is a good one.
It's fixable - just invest a little time!.......2001-04-26
I found this book really helpful and would have no hesitation in recommending it to anybody who is looking for drug-free way of overcoming panic and phobias. I read this book while attending a Counsellor at regular intervals. People tell their stories in the book - all of which are success stories. I found that I could really relate to some of the problems they had experienced. It made me feel that I wasn't so different after all and it really gave me great hope and encouragement. Well worth a read - it shall certainly lift your spirits!
A warm, caring, and inspiring book.......1999-07-18
This is a lovely and inspiring book--it's not like any other book I've ever read on this subject. Mani Feniger is a therapist, but this is not a clinical take on phobias. She has also struggled with anxiety and fears, and she writes with a personal, caring voice. Her own story, and the stories shared by others, make you feel that it is really possible to get free and move on with your life.
This extraordinary book has changed my life........1998-10-28
This is a must read for anyone who has lived with panic/phobic disorders. My life was unmanageable until I gained the insight of the author who has had her own struggles with these disorders. Perhaps that is what makes this book so helpful. The examples of people living with these disorders were familiar and reassuring. This book has helped motivate me to keep working on this stuff. I know now, I can do it!

Book Description
A true-life story of combat during World War II. In the book the author describes the action that leads up to the loss of his combat crew when their aircraft is downed by German forces. Events after he crash-lands his aircraft provide a narrative history that leads the reader into the emotional life of a prisoner of war.
The reader is taken through a progressive series of events as the author adjusts to a life that is a composite mixture of boredom, fear and danger. With escape uppermost in his mind he is made increasingly aware of the risks and retribution following a failed escape attempt.
He was in that same Stalag Luft III prison camp when British Prisoners in the adjacent North Compound made their escape through a tunnel. When captured, fifty of these prisoners were shot to death. The directive to murder the prisoners came directly from Hitler.
Solitary confinement for an escape attempt followed by a "forced" winter march as Stalag Luft III is evacuated, provides further insight into the dangers and hardships faced by the prisoners as their captors move the prisoners from one area to another in an attempt to avoid liberation by Allied military forces.
As the war continues the Red Cross food supplies are depleted and starvation becomes a reality. Dysentery and vermin are prevalent in the prison Stalag located at Nuremberg where thousands of allied prisoners have been relocated.
The author describes in vivid detail the chaos and fear created as bombs fall on targets located adjacent to the prison compounds.
Seeking to make his way to friendly territory the author continues his quest for freedom with multiple escapes during a second forced march from Nuremberg to Moosberg, Germany.
The author is greeted with a shocking scene of horror when captured after several days of freedom and returned to an "Oflag" where British ground-officer survivors of the battles of Dunkerque, Crete, Dieppe are imprisoned by the Germans.
The day of liberation finally arrives, but the story does not end with the events of that joyous day.
Adventure and tragedy continue after the war as the author flies combat during the Korean conflict and later provides a stirring, emotional account of a B-47 accident.
After his combat tour in Vietnam and retirement from the military the author and his wife revisit areas in England and France where some of the wartime events took place. Of special significance was a visit to his gunner's grave in France.

Remarkable true story of persistent courage.......2007-03-16
Robert Slane's expierences will captivate the reader. The author unassumingly tells of his three plane crash survivals and almost two years of captivity as a POW in Germany. His story reveals the potential of human strength and empathy even while enduring inhumane afflictions of war.

An incredible story of faith and courage under fire!!.......2004-03-12
I couldn't put this inspiring and powerful book down! If you only read one non-fiction book this year let it be this one; it is such a powerful testimony of faith and hope in spite of terrible odds.
Good guys DO win!.......2002-09-26
A great book of courage and inspiration. One of those hard to put down books. From the Christian Iraqi guard Col Ebberly met while a POW to the narrow escape from a coalition bombing raid, this book will have you realizing that divine guidance and intervention can and do happen in the darkest of circumstances.
Outstanding faith primer.......2002-07-01
Outstanding. This is a book for anyone dealing with troubled times in their life. What an inspiration!
The true story of Gulf War veteran David Eberly.......2002-04-10
Faith Beyond Belief is the true story of Gulf War veteran David Eberly. Written in his own words, Eberly survived being shot down in the Iraqi desert and after being captured was to spend forty-three days in the prison cells of Baghdad. A story of faith as well as the struggle for survival, penned by a deeply religious soldier who trusted in God to care for his soul, Faith Beyond Belief is singularly powerful reading and highly recommended for military buffs with an interest in the Gulf War, as well as anyone having to cope with life's manifold challenges and adversities.

Book Description
We live in an addictive society in which compulsiveness has become an art form, and most people have dependencies of some sort. This book was written to help all dependent people learn ways to follow a spiritual path, even if their dependencies might be one of those potentially less severe than alcoholism or drug addiction: such as workaholism, materialism, excessive anxiety, or relationship difficulties. To quote from the author: People these days talk seriously of addictions to television, the Internet, or to acquiring material possessions. These are usually self involved occupations. It's as though humanity knows somehow that joy is their natural state, but they lack the ability to open enough to experience it. They are seeking comfort and joy in all the wrong places. This memoir tells the story of three generations afflicted with alcoholism and its effects on family and friends. It chronicles the author's growing up with an alcoholic mother in the middle of the twentieth century, and her own later development of the same illness despite her strong commitment to avoid this. It describes the methods she has used to remain in recovery over twenty seven years, and includes information learned from her twenty plus years of working as an addictions' counselor, and from her ongoing relationships with an alcoholic spouse and an emotionally disabled son. This book speaks to issues of import to much of humanity, such as abandonment, the need for safely and security in an insecure world, the need to give control back to a spiritual source, the need for forgiveness of self and others, and the primary need to find Spirit within and not without. To quote again from Ms. Sherry's words: I no longer think of God as dwelling in heaven, wherever that might be. As a child, heaven seemed to be a place above the sky. However, even though I now know more of the facts about our Universe, I still can't identify a place called heaven.
Customer Reviews:
Review of Helen Sherry's book.......2004-08-06
The author gives a lot of good information about addictions and how to face them. Her personal story of the suggested twelve step recovery program is well written and enlightening. How wonderful to go from being victimized to being happy, joyous, and free.
Review of Seeking Spirit Beyond the Bottle.......2004-08-05
I really liked this book. It shows so clearly how the addiction process begins and develops. I also liked that the author tells her own story, but it's also her mothers and grandfathers story. You can really feel her pain and anguish but also the joy that can come from getting past the addiction and into a better life. Besides telling of her own slippage into addiction and her recovery in AA, the author also gives a lot of information about various addictions and what to do about them. I'd recommend it for anyone with an addiction in themselves or someone close -- or anyone who sees addictive patterns in their lives.
Book Description
"Ultimately a story of love, reconciliation, and triumph over adversity."-Library Journal
"A scorching account of the dark underside of family life."-Richard Selzer
"Wonderfully written."-Kirkus Reviews
"A book of unsparing and at times brutal candor . . . reminding us of the fragility of childhood and the costs it exacts upon the adults we become."-The Washington Post
The hardcover publication of this unflinching memoir resulted in the arrest of an alleged child molester and the following headline: "Author's Writing on Abuse Brings New Victims Forward." In a new afterword to this tenth-anniversary edition from New Rivers Press, Richard Hoffman writes about the events his book set in motion, the cries for help he received from men across the country, and the talk he had with an 11-year-old boy who thanked him "for making it stop."
But this autobiography, about a blue-collar family struggling to care for two terminally ill children as the third child, the author, is subjected at age 10 to sexual abuse by his coach, is also a moving work of literature and a testament to the healing power of truthtelling. It is a "spare, poignant" memoir (TIME) that "offers heartening evidence . . . of the human capacity to endure and prevail" (The Washington Post).
Richard Hoffman's work, both prose and verse, has appeared in numerous literary reviews and anthologies. Half the House was awarded the Boston Athenaeum Readers' Prize in 1996. His most recent book is Without Paradise (Cedar Hill), a collection of poems. He is currently writer-in-residence in the Department of Writing, Literature, and Publishing at Emerson College; he also serves on the faculty of the Teachers as Scholars Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and is currently a Massachusetts Cultural Council fellow in fiction.
Customer Reviews:
Honest and hopeful.......2002-08-16
Without flinching from the truth, this book shows that it IS possible to break the circle of abuse: to understand, to love, to forgive, to recover, and to go on loving and nurturing those who are dear. The story of Hoffman's growing up with two terminally ill brothers, a father sometimes unable to control his rage, a mother who copes by shutting out memories, and a sexually abusive coach, is painful but ultimately hopeful.
How telling your story can save a future victim........2000-08-08
This book was easy reading. I read this book in one night. It thankfully left out the details of the child abuse. Though it tends to jump around, and over many years, it is quite clear as to what happened. The author is telling his story, a very brave one to tell. But the importance of this book is really about how TELLING your story, can set others free. Its also about confronting your abuser, and how THAT can set yourself free. Free of secrets. Free of lies. Lies you tell others, and ones you may tell yourself.
A good read...highly recommended.......2000-07-19
Richard Hoffman is a brilliant writer, and quite a good teacher as well. My friend David says that he finds the book arousing. hehe Way to go Mr. Hoffman. The New York State Summer Young WriterInstitute Rules! Shout out to all of my peeps! AAAmennn
Gives hope where we usually think there is none.......1997-08-20
In Half the House Mr. Hoffman, like any good writer, is intimately concerned with truth, the minute, daily, specific reality of his experience in the rustbelt of Allentown, PA, in the nineteen fifties in working class America.
His style is careful, descriptive, direct, and poetic -- but not personal. Half the House is written, as Mr. Hoffman is also a well-published poet, with detachment, technique, and maturity.
Of the several memoirs I have read this year, only Half the House resolves its issues, its grimness, its pain in a health-promoting, realistic, peace-giving redemption.
That final, moving scene between defensive father and guilty son, wherein each gives a little, then alot, then communicate genuinely and respectfully dissolving forty years of impediment to love, is the kind of real life forgiveness all of us only dare dream of. Half the House does it. As Nabokov once said it takes a deep spiritual sense to create a masterpiece. Half the House has the depth.
Ron Morin
Very private writing.......1997-07-03
I read "Half the House" because I'm a sucker for anything billed as a memoir of abuse and healing. I had it on my "to read" pile for a year befor an update on ABC's "20/20" compelled me to get it out. (The update was useful -- without it "Half the House" remains half a book -- that's not a slam.)Mr. Hoffman is just a bit younger than I and from the same region and religious background as I. His recollections of his early schooling, particularly the black-and-white on newsprint art books we had, were certainly familiar ground for me. I think this would be a good reading experience for someone contemplating or enduring the same kind of healing journey
Book Description
A patient and a doctor offer a unique and authoritative perspective on recognizing and treating this pervasive illness that affects 4 million people-primarily women-in the United States alone.
One of the most common yet underrecognized autoimmune and rheumatological disorders, Sjögren's (pronounced SHOW-grens) Syndrome, or SjS, is characterized by symptoms that shift almost daily, usually beginning with vague discomforts such as dry eyes and mouth, then advancing to more severe concerns such as joint pain and swollen glands. Because SjS can manifest itself differently in each patient, A Body Out of Balance provides readers with a comprehensive guide to the wide array of symptoms, traditional and complementary treatments, and invaluable coping methods so patients may devise a personal treatment plan
Customer Reviews:
A Body Out of Balance.......2007-05-27
I also now suffer from Sjogren's Syndrome, and this book is more of a day to day, practical application type book.I was able to see some detailed information, including a break down of the different symptoms.
A practioner speaks the truth.......2004-06-24
This was a very insightful and practical guide to not only treating this disease, but many others as well. Doctors are not mind readers, nor are they infallible. They need to have patients cooperate with them, and provide them with as much insightful information as possible in order to obtain an accurate diagnosis. Patients should not rely on the doctor to have all the answers, and frequently, will not, if there is meaningful information left from his or her view. This book reminds us all that we are responsible for our own health, and the doctor is there to help us along that path only if we allow them. It is up to each of us, as patients, to be forthright, and open with our problems, concerns, and illnesses. We must forever be mindful that today's health system does not encourage lengthy visits with physicians; hence, we should come prepared, equiped, and aware of our bodies and how our health is being impacted by whatever our conditions may be. This book gently but firmly reminds us of our responsibilities to take charge of our own bodies and of our interrelationships with our doctors. Bravo on a book well done, indeed.
A wonderful book!.......2004-01-16
This book is a valuable resource for anyone who is facing the challenges of a Sjogren's diagnosis. The authors address both the newly diagnosed patient and those who have been coping with this chronic illness for many years. Their advice on choosing a doctor and forming a partnership with her is wonderful and, I believe, critical to the physical and emotional well being of the chronically ill patient. I hope physicians will read the book. The authors' insights into the frustrations of treating patients with incurable but manageable illnesses are lessons for both patients and physicians.
If you have been recently diagnosed with Sjogren's or if you are struggling with complicated symptoms which doctors can't diagnose, you must read this book. The medical information is clear and easy to understand but thorough. The authors will help you navigate the complex medical community.
For those who have been living with Sjogren's for many years "A Body out of Balance" reinforces the goal of having the best possible quality of life. The authors give the reader tools to help achieve that goal.
"A Body out of Balance" will touch you. You will be grateful that finally someone understands what you've been going through. You will also be grateful because someone is offering help and hope.
Fair and balanced reporting: patient and doc collaborate.......2003-12-10
This book is a very good example of how patient and doctor can and must collaborate; in this case on a book about a specific disorder, but in a bigger sense, too: patients and doctors must learn to work together to solve complex, tricky medical conditions caused by autoimmunity, to come up with customized treatment packages which enhance quality of life without threatening it.
Book Description
When Madaus, a library director of twenty years and now computer network executive, suddenly finds himself experiencing expanded states of consciousness that lead to out-of-body trips and spontaneous healings, he immerses himself in all the available information on extraordinary phenomena. His journey not only leads him to all the known scientific findings, but also to The Monroe Institute where a series of programs convince him that a balance between our head and our heart is the key to successful living. Think Logically, Live Intuitively is both a humorous and insightful spiritual memoir, and an astute critique of our modern culture and its short-sighted materialism.
Customer Reviews:
Thought Provoking.......2007-07-10
Kudos to Richard and other authors like him who share such personal experiences with the world. I am reading this book for the second time and have found it to be most useful in helping me understand experiences that I've had which have been similar to his; it has become like a reference book to me. Anyone who reads this book and may be exploring consciousness and the Universe will see from this book that the possibilites are endless as the Universe is just waiting for us to explore it. Clearly as the depth of the authors' experiences show, our only limitations would be the ones that we impose upon ourselves.
Release the need for predictability.......2007-01-11
It's easy to write "We must explore the issue of how we perceive things versus how they might really be," and another thing entirely to personally do just that. This book is a cascade of experiences, with stops along the way for challenging his own thinking, of a very rational person exploring an intelligent world. The unseen becomes obvious; the unexplained becomes as tangible as touch. What may seem "nonordinary" has practical applications on the job. For those who have had moments of insight through their religious faith or various forms of spiritual awareness, this book illustrates how a successuve stream of these insights can challenge you with an "understanding of people and the interconnnected nature of everything." One of the writer's themes is that his way of perceiving tended to be habitual and that, through his "nonordinary" experience of the energy realm around him, he could change his habits, his approach to otherwise difficult situations in his workaday world. This book is for the spiritual explorer who wants to come back home with both feet on the ground. As the stories unfold, it's a result you might not predict.
Just what I needed...........2006-08-19
If you've ever asked yourself what the meaning of life is, or what your spiritual path should be, then this is the book for you. However, instead of answering either of those questions, J.R. will humbly and compassionately awaken your spirit through his awe inspiring experiences and provides you the tools to find your own way.
Fantastic!.......2005-12-26
This is a fantastic book! In "Think Logically, Live Intuitively", the author reflects on his journey to find answers pertaining to the "facts" that are presented in each of our lives. As a "seeker" myself, I appreciate his honesty and openness in exploring the "facts" and allowing the reader to decide for his/her self what is true for them.
I find myself returning to this book often as I research the "facts" for myself. I highly recommend this book!
Consciousness Unveiling.......2005-09-17
What I feel is most important in this book is the authors willingness to show the creativity, complexity and potential of Human Consciousness.
Having read most of the books referenced in this work I find the references to be potent and timely in the text so as to assist others who may be having these experiences and to encourage us to be more open to our potential.
It seems his experiences were, in part, a result of his willingness to be open.
I have read many books of our modern mystics but I have never read such an account as what the author shares of his personal experiences.
Absolutely Incredible!!
Book Description
From the foreword by Dr. Douglas Kerr, Director, Johns Hopkins Transverse Myelitis Center
"The Autoimmune Epidemic by Donna Jackson Nakazawa is an astounding book....It is the kind of book that will rivet you and scare you. It will make you angry. It will amaze you with the courage of some of the people described in the book...The Autoimmune Epidemic is every bit as compelling as Upton Sinclair's The Jungle...It is also every bit as necessary as An Inconvenient Truth....
You will leave this book with no reservations about the veracity of the conclusions: put simply, there is no doubt that autoimmune diseases are on the rise and increasing environmental exposures of toxins and chemicals is fueling this rise. The research is sound. The conclusions unassailable....
Reading The Autoimmune Epidemic is a necessary first step. Reading The Autoimmune Epidemic is a life-altering event. It needs to be."

Book Description
BALANCE--that subtle but oh so necessary ingredient for success. Whether it be playing a song, swinging a golf club, surfing a wave, raising a child, or living the Christian life, knowing where to draw the fine lines between the good and the not-so-good is a daily challenge. It can mean the difference between failure and success. We search the scriptures for wisdom, for a new tip to bring it all together, only to experientially realize that the Christian life is more than just a formula for success. To our demise and ultimately the beginnings of our Christian maturity, we discover that there are no perfect formulas, only a perfect God and imperfect man. And even though Jesus Christ is our supernatural link, the fine lines between His way and ours can be difficult to see. For instance, last week were you bold or prideful? Humble or timid? Cautious or fearful? Faithful or foolhardy? So many fine lines; so easy to fool ourselves. Oft unaware, we sing our heartfelt rendition of the Perfect Song...and then wonder why there isn't an encore.

Book Description
A common contemporary complaint is the feeling of being out of balance. In response to the discomfort and pain many feel in reaction to the constantly accelerating pace of living, Schechter demonstrates how to achieve integration in everyday life. Drawing on myth, psychology and spirituality, he suggests relief can be found through practical spiritual and psychological guidance. Because a balanced life flows naturally out of the condition of internal harmony, it can only be achieved through an inner-focused process--not by rearranging the furniture of one's external life. The nine chapters are discussions guiding the reader into ideas and practices that produce internal harmony--a fresh formulation and synthesis of perennial wisdom. Lucid and flowing, Schechter's writing is easily accessible to those beginning their search for a more balanced life as well as appealing to individuals further along the path of personal and spiritual growth.

Book Description
Our Lady's Book Receipts deal less with grand dishes for high-company occasions and more with the common dinners of every day. (January 1863)
Gody's Lady's Book, perhaps the most popular magazine for women in nineteenth-century America, had a national circulation of 150,000 during the 1860s. The recipes (receipts) it reproduced were often submitted by middle- and upper-class women from both North and South, and they reveal the variety of regional cooking very much in evidence before the homogenization of American culture in the twentieth century.
Civil War Recipes reproduces, in their original wording, receipts that appeared in the pages of Gody's Lady's Book during the decade of the Civil War. Editors Lily May Spaulding and John Spaulding have added annotations to assist those cooks who might not know, for example, that buscuits often referred to what we now call cookies. They also provide a brief overview of the technical state of cooking in America before and during the Civil War. Although leavening agents were not unknown, the recipe for Christening Cake requires whisking the whites of sixteen eggs into a full froth and beating the entire mixture for more than thirty minutes.
Sections on both Union and Confederate army rations, cooking on both homefronts, and a list of substitutions used during the war by southern cooks round out the background material provided by the Spauldings.

An excellent glimpse of life during the Civil War........2002-12-30
With its well-written introduction, this marvelous book is a great way to read about one aspect of life during the American Civil War.
These recipes are taken verbatim from a magazine that was fairly widely read by the ladies of the North and South. They are all dated with the year they were published, in some cases more than once. There's a glossary and notes to help you read the somewhat antique language. There's also a wonderful reference list, with lots of titles for the Civil War historian to look for.
I wanted this book because I love being in the kitchen. I also wanted to improve my knowledge of history, as seen through the eyes of the wives, mothers and daughters. As a genealogist, this book enhances what little I know about my female Civil War ancestors. As an added bonus, many of these recipes sound recreateable in the modern kitchen! This is a great read, even if you're not a cook.
Fascinating reading. Not just a cook book but history too!.......1999-03-18
Interesting history on the diets of the Civil War soldiers as well as authentic recipes from the home front. Many are the basis of our recipes today. I had a lot of fun trying some of them and they were delicious. The historical section at the beginning was well researched and very interesting reading.
Interesting. Well researched & well written........1999-02-26
I have an interest in civil war history since my grandfather fought in the civil war (union side). This book was well researched and well written. It adds a new perspective to the times.
