Book Description
No war has caused greater suffering than World War II on Germany's Eastern Front. Victory in the war cost the Red Army over 29 million casualties, whose collective fate was not properly documented. Among the many milions of soldiers who made up that toll, was a number of Red Army general officers. Many of them perished on the battlefield or in prison camps at the hands of their German tormentors. Others fell victim to Stalinist oppression. Aleksander Maslov memorializes these victims using formerly secret Soviet archival materials and interviews with families of the victims.
Customer Reviews:
Great source.......2006-01-18
An excellent source for Soviet officers killed during WWII. The circumstances that were involved in each officers death are dealt with and described. Various sources are used for information including searches decades later for the bodies of these men who had previously never been found. 1941 was the worst year as many officers, especially from the tank troops, found their deaths on the battlefields for a plethora of reasons. The commander of the 6th Mech Corps died fighting Germans during a counter-attack during which his tanks sadly ran out of fuel and had to be abandoned. Many of the stories are interesting, especially the engineer General who was hanged and hosed with water in the sub zero temperatures, subsequently freezing to death. Well worth the money and a great addition to the literature on the Eastern Front.

Misunderstood Geniuses.......2006-03-15
The record of a mutually supportive and loving friendship, the frustration of separation, and the agony of geniuses misunderstood by a repressive Christian western civilization. Gets a bit repetitive from letter to letter, but that's the nature of correspondences separated by weeks and months.

WELL WRITTEN AND RIGHT ON TARGET FOR KIDS 5-10.......2007-10-10
I have been reading the IVY & BEAN series aloud to my 6.5-year-old twins (and their 3-year-old baby sister) and they love it. We are on book 2 and both the text and illustrations are so well done. Bravo to the publisher, the writer, and the illustrators for so elegantly interweaving text and art and dialogue and getting the target audience with no talking down, no bad grammar, no brattiness. . . . Fabulous series. Can't wait for book 4! BRAVO!

Book Description
Miguel Serrano, a Chilean diplomat and writer who has travelled widely in India studying Yoga, had a close friendship with Jung and Hesse at the end of their lives. This book is the outcome of his meetings and correspondence with them. Many letters are reproduced including documents of great importance written to the author by Jung shortly before his death, explaining his ideas about the nature of the world and of his work.
Customer Reviews:
enchanting tale of two friendships........2007-08-10
An enchanting book by the controversial author Miguel Serrano. Serrano's books are often hard to interpret (requiring a knowledge of Alchemy, Gnosticism, Norse Paganism, Arthurian myth, Nietzschean Philosophy, Jungian Psychology, as well as Tantra both Buddhist and Hindu in order to decipher) but this is one of his more straightforward works. Serrano does an excellent job of drawing one into the story its almost as if you are on a spiritual pilgrimage with him. Despite the fact that I loved his two other books that have been translated into English ( NOS book of the Resurrection and The Secret Flower) I put off buying this book for some reason. After having read a few of Hesse's works and finding them to be truly amazing I knew I had to stop putting it off and buy it. I wasn't disappointed.
The Hermetic Circle.......2006-02-19
_This is the second time that I have read this remarkable book. Both times I found myself envying the author for having established friendships with two of my greatest heroes, two of the greatest sages of modern times, Hermann Hesse and C.G. Jung.
_This is not some collection of trivial exchanges- from the first meeting with both men the tone of the conversations were deep and significant. As the author says, it was like he had known both men before and they were resuming an old discussion. Hess himself commented on it and said that, "Here, only the right guests meet. This is the Hermetic Circle...." Sounds rather like Jung's concept of synchronicity, though Jung also speaks of Hermetic links with past and future in these discussions.
_While both sections cover a remarkable amount of the core meaning of the life work of both men, there is also a personal sense here. You feel like you are meeting them yourself, are also guests in their houses. Not that the ideas are all rehash either- here and there something new pops up. An example would be how in one of the interviews with Jung the discussion turned to how both the ancient Greeks and the Native Americans both thought from their hearts and not their heads. Thinking exclusively from one's head is the result of dissociation between ego and Self- and sets up a tension that may tear a person or culture to pieces. In any case, you feel that you know both men. Of course, Hesse's novels were autobiographical in the deepest sense (and it is reaffirming to know that he actually was an accurate reflection of his characters- it wasn't just a show.) As for Jung, he states outright that he wrote primarily for his own process of individuation and that the fact that so many others read him made him frankly uncomfortable.
_I was glad to see that my own perceptions of these often misunderstood and misinterpreted men seem to have been accurate from the start. For me too it was like a conversation with old friends- relinking with the Hermetic Circle.
crossroads of history.......2003-04-14
Serrano was a writer and diplomat who sought out 2 masters as a spiritual/philosophic seeker. Fascinating biography, mixed with Serrano's own fixations.
Serrano later fixated on Adolph Hitler, so there certainly seems to be a germanic bent that he followed. Read "Black Sun" to see the strange path MS took after his encounters with Hesse and Jung.
Very Enlightening!.......1999-10-26
I picked this up because I had read several books by Hesse and was interested in Mr. Serrano's personal experiences with the Master. I found his writing to be quite engaging, and felt as if I had met Hesse myself. The section on Jung piqued my interest enough for me to search for his, The Undiscovered Self, which I loved as well. I also went on to read Mr. Serrano's, The Ultimate Flower. Unfortunately most of Serrano's other works are out of print. Get this before it goes o.o.p. too. You won't regret it.

Book Description
Franklin can tie his shoelaces, count by twos, button buttons and zip zippers. He likes fly pie, baseball, his blue blanket, his night-light and the color purple. And, like all kids, he likes to talk about himself. Now he has a special place to write everything down and he's left room for a friend. With Franklin's help, children can write in, draw and record everything about themselves in their own keepsake album.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book!.......2000-02-19
This workbook-type book was wonderful! I used it a few years ago with my son who is now 10 years old, and am ordering 2 more for my foster toddlers who will soon be leaving us. "Frankin and Me" is fantastic for reflecting on a child's self and events that occured in their lives. Not only I, but my son as well, have enjoyed looking back each time we get this book out. I hope that someday when my foster children are long gone and look back in this book that they are able to remember more about themselves and where they were. Very nice to complete and pack away for future smiles! :-)
different type of book.......2000-01-20
This book is more of a workbook not a story book. A chance for your child to discover themselves. Re: the other review All the franklin books are like that. The other characters look diff than franklin, and the story is a little different also. But they are still enjoyable and teach good lessons.
This book was terrible........1999-07-30
I was so disappointed in this book. My two year old son loves Franklin and his friends, but this was a complete waste. It really isn't a book to read, but a "memory" book instead, where you are to put in photos and other information about your child. The worst part was that although Franklin looked something like his character in the show, the "friends" looked NOTHING like themselves-they were just pictures of animals of the same breed. I'm not sure what the other Franklin books are like, but I would not recommend this one.

Book Description
This terrific new journal from Anne Geddes offers a fun way for girls from eight to fourteen to record all the important details about their friendships.
Featuring the colorful imagery from Down in the Garden and Until Now, A Record of Friendships has space for you and up to seven friends to list all the things that make your friendships special. There's room for friends to reveal important tidbits of information about themselves-from star signs and favorite sayings to the best place to shop and, of course, boyfriends.
The "What's Hot . . . and What's Not" pages offer space to record what's cool and totally uncool-including actors and actresses, movies, TV shows, bands, songs, and teachers. There's even a place for photos and plenty of room to be creative with pages designed to let you and your friends write, draw, or paste whatever you want.
An Anne Geddes journal wouldn't be complete without that "special" touch-in this case, an envelope inserted in the back of the book so you can cleverly safeguard your "secret" notes from friends.
A Record of Friendships will provide hours of fun for girls and is a great way to ensure that memories of childhood friends are saved forever.

Memories are made of this.......2007-04-06
This is a wonderful little book that all best friends should give each other. Friendships are made up of memories and this book helps you put those memories into a tangible form in the guise of photos, snippets of information, childhood secrets, teenage years with all its angst and then those tentative steps toward adulthood.
The book itself can be used by all ages and is well thought out in the questions it poses for you to fill in for not only yourself but your best friend too.
A gem of a book that will give you hours of pleasure, both in creating it and reading it when you have finished filling it in.
Girlfriends are the best!.......2001-08-22
I bought this book after getting a similar one from my best friend for my birthday. I bought all my bridesmaids one as there gift. I loved the pictures, questions and all the bright colors. It is a great book to record your friendships in and give as a gift. My bridesmaids loved them. I would highly recommend this book. It is the best that I've found! It's fun and a great way to record those memories!
Soulmates.......2000-09-10
I spent the summer in Martha Vineyard and I met my soulmate. She is the most amazing person in this world and I know that our friendship will last forever, and so will our memories, but I thought that it would be a good idea to record them, so we would never forget. So Girlfriends was the perfect going away present.
Perfect gift.......2000-07-08
I just love this book. I am giving this book to 6 of my friends for part of their gift for being my bridesmaids. I enjoyed putting it together and loved to re-create the memories over. I gave the Mothers one to my mom and she just loved it and showed it to everyone. I gave my sister-in-laws the sisters one. These books are very personable and the perfect gift for anyone and all occasions.
Girlfriends.......2000-05-29
This book is amazing. While putting it together for my best friend's 16th birthday the memories came flooding back. It made me so happy to have a best friend like mine. Yhe book was very helpful and I had a blast writing in it and reading it over

Comprehensive & Informative.......2000-05-08
This is an excellent book which clearly and concisely explains the myriad of conditions which can affect a woman from menarche through to menopause. I am a naturopath and medical herbalist and I have found this book invaluable. It is the first of its kind to cover the medical and alternative solutions to common gynaecological complaints. While it provides self-help information for the reader, I was impressed that it always advocates proper medical and professional advice and check-ups. A real gem.

Awesome Cookbook.......2006-11-04
This is the best cookbook I've purchased. It covers so many diverse topics and gives you so many different recipes, and they are all pretty simple too. IT's also great for newlywed couples b/c it gives you a whole bunch of meals for two.
Wonderful recipes for EVERY OCCASION.......2006-08-13
My daughter checked this book from the library to read, (hotel management major) and asked for a copy for her birthday. What a wonderful read. Excellent tried and true recipes, illustrations are colored on glossy paper. Lots of tips and tricks. Just a wonderful, "first bride" cookbook to have but great for everyday occasions.
For a more intimate present, you may want to try . . . .......2005-05-18
I am an avid, but amateur chef and am getting married in Fall 05. I've looked at a number of bride-groom cookbooks. So far, my favorite is NOT ON LOVE ALONE by Jessie Carry Saunders. It has a friendlier, more intimate tone than any of the others -- it feels like something written by a bride for other brides.
It has a friendly, appealing feel, like the author is in the kitchen with you, telling you stories about the recipes as she teaches you how to make them. Also, it's just a higher quality book -- it's a hard cover, the pages are nice and thick, and the watercolor illustrations on every page make the book seem like something you could display on your coffee table as easily as you could use it in the kitchen.
If you want a good cookbook, any of the various newlywed cookbooks will work fine. If you want an excellent present for a wedding or a bridal shower, my recommendation is NOT ON LOVE ALONE.
More than 1,200 recipes and enhanced with some 700 photos.......2005-03-09
Featuring more than 1,200 recipes and enhanced with some 700 photos, the New Cook Book: Bridal Edition from Better Homes and Gardens offers a culinary wealth of menu ideas for romantic dinners, holiday meals, and parties with friends -- as well as palate pleasing, appetite satisfying family meals at home. There is a guide to wines, cheeses, and contemporary cocktails, as well as tips and techniques that will provide even the most novice of kitchen cooks with a feeling of accomplished expertise. Of special note is the practical advice for putting on a big holiday dinner. From Pomegranate Martinis; White Bean Dip; Chocolate Caramel Bars; and Chicken Fried Steak; to One-Pot Spaghetti; Taco Salad; Meatball Soup; and Broccoli-Carrot Stir-Fry, the New Cook Book: Bridal Edition has "kitchen cook friendly" recipes and ideas for virtually every dining occasion!
Toss up between two beautiful wedding gifts.......2005-01-21
It was a toss up between this BH&G Bridal cookbook and Betty Crocker's Bridal Edition. I compared both of them in the book store and both are beautiful gifts each with their own strong points. I happened to select Better Homes and Gardens because the bride in this case would like a slow cooker. This book has a chapter of slow cooker recipes as well as a chapter on grilling-indoor & out. It covers both charcoal and gas grilling how to's, safety plus a timing chart for indoor electric. Both books have great color photos of different cuts of meats and more. I can't remember all the photos in Betty Crocker, but this one has photos of unfamiliar vegetables, fruits, legumes etc. The recipes look more exciting, and some of them are labeled with a heart for Best loved. Some are labeled for preparation time slow, fast, no fat, low fat etc. If there is a technique in the recipe that may be unfamiliar, the page number is cited for additional help. There is also a large Bonus section in the front of the book with many more ideas such as napkin folding, centerpieces, family gatherings, and recipes for two. The following section on Cooking Basics covers, well... the basics! Utensils, seasonings, food storage safety, manners, and more, along with more photos. Either book would be a nice gift!
