Specious, facile, but interesting technique.......2004-04-04
This book is seriously flawed and a waste of time for serious historians, but yet... it has some interesting moments. The premise behind the book is that the author is able to interview Ulysses S. Grant and ask him whatever he wishes. This is problematic, because Grant certainly would never have answered most of these questions. Many are too personal and even more relate directly to his drinking, a much-exaggerated aspect of his life. Grant would certainly have given the author a pointed look and then walked off, silent as usual.
But the Grant in this book is effusive and answers every question. No wonder, without this device, the book would have a crashing bore! So we have a voluble and chatty Ulys giving fake psychological insight into his drinking, his military decisions, his cancer and ultimately, his death. It's facile, inane, but one must admit, reasonably entertaining. Don't expect any real history in here because there is none. It's a fictional treatment of the man, but not entirely without merit. For people willing to buy anything on General Grant, this would be something worth owning.

I've read several books on Howard Hughes, but this one by far is the best.
Richard Hack really looks beneath the surface and into the very soul of Hughes, painting a disturbing yet realistic human portrait of him along the way.

What a life Hughes Led! The author did a wonderful job of writng so that I couldn't put the book down. Hughes was the ultimate wheeler dealer. I felt sorry for him as a child with his parnoid mother who raised him to fear all illness. But when he grew up he had no excuse for his behavior in treatment of women. He was fortunate in business, always thinking in larger terms. This book was overall as interesting as Tutankhamun by Hoving; it was as thrilling as riding on a roller coaster driven by Hughes.

This book gives good insite on the life of Howard Hughes. If you are interested in specific information on business or aviation this may not be the book for you. But Howard Hughes was much more than business and aviation. He was a psychoanalyst dream. A very interesting case study in Obsessive Compulsive disorder also another overlooked aspect of his psyche was the relationship he had with women. He would sometimes keep women all over town on payroll to be on call at all times; these women would be on payroll for years sometimes perhaps outliving their best years (hollywood being youth orientated). Women he pursued who never showed interest were seen as conquest. Such as Ava Gardner who by her own definition could never love him because he smelled. However they remained lifelong friends. Yet interestingly when the women he was interested in were married he made it his personal problem to see that they got divorced to the extent of hiring private investigators and such. Howard could have also been considered a voyuer. He would hire investigators for the women he was interested in (some may not have been mutually interested) and spy on them to the point that bugs were planted in their bedrooms. Those who turned him down like Elizabeth Taylor (who was still a teenager were offered money. What is the saddest is his last years. You work your whole life so that you can enjoy your wealth in your golden years but for Howard his golden years consisted of self imposed imprisonment. This was a detriment because the people who were his true friends such as Dietrich (who was loyal and saved him from economic ruin many times)and his aunt Annette (who was there for him in his early years after his parents death)he kept away. So he was neglected at the end. Surrounded by people who never really cared about him just his money.

This books is just a laundry list of completely useless facts. One gets no personal insight into the individual. Note to self, never buy a biography, always read autobiographies. The difference is amazing. A person writing about their own life is infinitely more useful than an outsider writing about his interpretation of that person's life.

There have been previous biographies of Howard Hughes the most infamous being Clifford Irving's hoax in 1972 but this is likely to be the most thorough, written 25 years after the billionaire's death. Hack had access to Hughes's private papers and declassified FBI and CIA documents; he also interviewed people who worked in many of Hughes's enterprises. The author begins with Hughes's childhood, the only son of a wealthy Houston oilman. The lifelong income from Hughes Tool Co. allowed Hughes to set lofty goals and seek to fulfill them: to become a great golfer (one goal that went by the wayside), to be an aviator (his early triumph as a solo pilot led to the creation of Hughes Aircraft, the Spruce Goose, and TWA), and to make movies. Hughes wooed Hollywood starlets, though he married only twice. He became increasingly reclusive, with his behavior going from eccentric to bizarre. Narrator Dan Cashman reads clearly, but there are some obvious mispronunciations (Sukor instead of Cukor, for the Hollywood director, among others). A good choice for popular collections. Not quite up to Living in Paris..a bit disappointing. It was fine up until most of the design showcases of homes. It would have been more of a treasure had it been stronger on the Province of Quebec and more highlights on all the things in Montreal and Quebec City.

The "Simple Guide to... Russia" is for the . . . Simple.......2000-09-23
Really-- a "Simple" Guide to Customs and Etiquette in Russia? No such thing is possible. Russia is such a deep and complex society, the title puts me off now. But... that wasn't the case when I purchased this booklet several years ago.
We were preparing for our first trip to Russia-Eastern Europe and were looking for anything that might offer some insight, so we picked this one up. It's small, just a bit larger than a checkbook at 78 pages. I thought it would be useful and something I might want to toss in a jacket pocket. The thing is, after finding our first really good travel guide, we've never opened this one again.
That's not to say there isn't good information in the volume. Slatter talks a bit about the history and turbulent transition taking place in the context of who the Russian people are. From there on out it mostly goes to the travel material.
The question you have to ask yourself now-- Am I going to depend on this book to get me around Russia? The answer is simply "no." You will want, and need, another guide. A good one will include everyrthing you might read in this booklet.
For a little more extensive treatment of the social-cultural topics, I'd pick up "The Russian Way" by Zita Dabars or better yet these travel books: "Lonely Planet Russia, Ukraine & Belarus" or "Insight Guides Russia". "Russian Way" takes a similar approach to Slatter's, but expands significantly to more than 70 important topics. Lonely Planet in my opinion prints the best of the travel guides-- you'll find everything that this book has, plus a lot, lot more. Insight Guides are packed with great writing, information, plus hundreds of excellent photos.
With Slatters book out of print now, you might need to resort to that plan any way.
The bottom line-- "Simple Guides" are for the . . . Simple.

This book is a good read even if you don't have to. It contains interesting, up-to-date examples with popular "real" companies. Book makes it pretty easy to learn subject matter.

If you can't afford to attend one of his insightful seminars, this book is the second best thing. Even if you are a seasoned practioner, reading this book can only let you gain more insight.
